Where's my order?

I have never received this product and every day it shows USPS picked it up on the date of that day. Apparently there is no other way to report this kind of problem within the Amazon website, since my search of "Complaints" yielded no relevant content. I ordered this book back in mid-January. It was supposed to ship by Jan 23 with an expected delivery of Jan 28. Needless to say this book is effectively worthless and I question its continuing existence.

diminishing returns?

We all want better compression. Yet surely the current JPG and GIF have taken us to the limit? Apparently not, if you read this book. There is still some slack that can be squeezed out of an image, if you use JPEG2000. Acharya gives you all the technical details. Where it would greatly assist your comprehension if you already knew about the discrete cosine transform and the current JPG standard.

The book also shows how VLSI chips can be designed to perform hardware JPG2000 computations. Why? As the book explains, think of many consumer electronics devices, like cameraphones. Perhaps you can help bring this about?

But one has to wonder how much longer this can go on. There must be a point of diminishing returns in the cost of computations versus the gains to be made in compression.

Utter, yet amusing nonsense
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-30
John Malatich: the man, the philosophy, the legend. Perhaps only two of the three will suffice to describe this author his magnum opus: "The Theory of Everything is...". Unintentionally bizaare, Mr. Malatich expresses his philosophy in swarms of capital letters and misplaced parentheses that invite the reader to vainly delve deeper into the text to find the hidden meanings that are simply not there. Unlike the Codex Sepentarius or the Voynich Manuscript, this work does not use its own script; however, like those two, the inscrutbility of text and alien drawings lend an otherworldly note to the text.

Though I'm giving this book a 3/5, do not think that I'm endorsing Mr. Malatich's ideas, as I find them puerile and easily refutable by even the untrained eye. However, taken as a sort of 'art' , this book stands as a brazen testament to the American kook: those who willingly and unabashedly ignore reality in preference to living within its confines.

Uneducated Nonsense

The physics department at my school gets the mad ramblings of this man, and I usually end up with them (seeing as how no one else will read them). In a word, I sum these writings as "nonsense." Most of his ideas, aside from being mostly incoherant and physically absurd, also defy the time-tested and true concepts that the average high-school physics student could debunk. Furthermore, mixed in with these insane babblings, are religious and political ramblings, which he tries to pass off as the only possible truth.
My recommendation, unless you want a good laugh or evidence of the under-education of many Americans, pass on this book. Any other use of your money would be a better one.

Usually I go with the books when it comes to learning editing software but this time I was on a short deadline so I thought I'd try video training. I've just finished viewing all the content on this disc and can only say that I'm baffled by how little content I got for my money. I write this review because I wish someone had warned me against the purchase before I dropped a decent number of dollars on an extremely disappointing product.

First off, neither of the words WEB or INTERNET are mentioned in the course of this training. I'm completely serious. Compression for web is simply not a topic they chose to cover. I bought this disc to learn how to compress for the web and am still in a state of shock that it didn't even make the table of contents. So if you want to learn more about H.264 or crushing your video down into smoothly downloadable units - there is nothing here for you. Go buy a Brian Gary book instead.

The instructor on this disc, Larry Jordan, truly is a smart and charismatic teacher and I want to offer that up because it's true, but his crisp explanations are overridden by the paltry amount of topics covered in this training. I don't think the knowledge contained in this video is equivalent to one chapter in a decent Pro Training Series book. It really is staggering. Does the disc do a good job of teaching you about selected topics? Yes it does. The explanations are short but sufficient. The on-screen graphics are what you'd expect - the instructor talks fluidly and competently while you see his mouse moving around an open Compressor window as he works on a single project. Yes, all of that is fine and good. But there is just such a small amount of information being taught here that I think the price is literally $40 too high. This disc is for the ultra-beginner only, as all it really covers is the interface and how to use the Compressor presets. Then it's over. I expected the menu to keep scrolling and scrolling but no. That was the end.

Save your cash.

Too low density of information
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-04
The informational density in this book is too low.

The book provides good description of compression techniques and algorithms, however, compared to the number of pages, the amount of information provided is not adequate.

The book is full of program listings in both BASIC and C, together with a description of what this code does. This I consider unnecessary.

Also, the book is dangerously inaccurate in many places, even in algorithm specifications, formulations are often so inaccurate, that they can be even considered misleading.

However, if you are a carefull and aware reader, you can harvest the compression algorithms out of this book.

poor translation

This book is translated from German original, and since I don't speak German I do not know if the original book is good. This book (English translation) is very hard for me to read due to lots of translation problems and mistakes. Since there's not so many books on GDI engines, this is still a rare source on the topic, but I would recommend you read any review paper if you want to learn more about GDI engines (some are in Prog. Energy Comb. Sci).

Double Crush Syndrome
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-04-30
I came across Double Crush Syndrome (DCS) while preparing for a lecture. I had read ~30 primary sources, key articles, and I was well aware of the literature, issues, and controversies. I therefore was shocked when I read DCS. 1) Some topics, CTS or TTS, were OK but in no way compare in quality or PRICE to standards like Entrapment Neuropathies by Dawson, et al ($25! used/new ). 2) The cherry picking and biased presentation of the literature to support the authors view is troubling. 3) Regarding the statistics & analysis, well as Mark Twain said "3 kinds of lies: lies, dam lies, & statistics". In conclusion, I had to buy this for a lecture, but NO ONE else needs to buy this!
