What would our current economic conditions in this country have been if more businesses had read and acted on Jan Phillips book "The Art of Original Thinking"? What we need in today's economic climate is many, many more "Thought Leaders" and the attitudes contained in this book.

Ms. Phillips should send her book to President Obama, members of Congress and the SBA!! Business schools should get out of their stone age thinking of profits only and embrace the principles of also creating a better world for everyone.

This is a book I will highly recommend to all my clients thinking of starting their own businesses or those wanting to make changes in the businesses they already have. Just reading the Chapter titles alone is inspiring!!

If you want to be a part of the current economic solution, then get this book and study it!

The Art of Original Thinking is a well crafted piece of work! Jan delivers a powerful message of how original thinkers can heal, build, transform, and develop the world. One of the most extraordinary examples of the "original thinker" is microfinance (microcredit) in Chapter 12. It shows how the original thinker can creatively use a little to make global changes. It is highly recommended for today's business majors.

Reader Book Review

By: Brian J. Donley
Author: "The Original Psychology of Success and Donley's Law"

Unlimited potential for business and personal transformations resides within "The Art of Original Thinking." I was profoundly affected in over 29 separate yet distinct areas throughout this work of Art. I have personally generated several new proposals as a result of learning, applying and teaching this new found wisdom.

One proposal (currently under favorable review) with a 20,000+ employee global corporation may result in hundreds of millions in savings per year, through social responsibility alone!!! Two other socially conscious proposals with different groups have been accepted and are currently being implemented.

Rating: "The Art of Original Thinking" receives Donley's Five Star W.O.W (Words of Wisdom) rating!!!!!

Thank You Jan Phillips
My thanks to your circle of support!
Blessings and visions of greatness to each of you!!!

I highly recommend this book

If you are thinking "There must be a better way to life", read this book.

It's well researched and filled with real life examples to confirm your own hunches that you are an original thinker and the world wants to hear what you have to say. I found it truly inspiring.

It's obvious that we live in a world with many serious problems. Poverty stalks the globe. Children are dying of preventable illnesses. Wars are killing and maiming civilians. Yes, there are problems, we acknowledge, but they're going to have to be up to someone else to solve--not us. The "experts" will find a way. We have enough problems of our own.

We've been socialized to be sheep, to be patient when bureaucracy is slow. Jan Phillips writes, "Thought leaders do not wait in silence. Nor do they wait for others' minds to be opened, or for safe places to speak into. Thought leaders are the openers of minds, the modern day prophets...."

The paradigm we grew up with says it's every man for himself. Do the best you can, donate a little money once in a while to ease your conscience, and believe for the best. But as Phillips says, "We are here to advance life...to be...a perpetrator of inspiration, a leader of thought and heartfelt action....This is the time, and we are the ones."

The book is filled with stories of people who made a difference, of companies that broke the mold of ordinary thinking, that found new visions for themselves and their world. Of companies who found that "doing [good] unto the least of these" not only feels right, but can be profitable at the same time.

Ms. Phillips believes in telling stories, because stories reach through and around our barriers--stories can move our hearts. One example: "Half of us do not have access to clean water. Five thousand children die every day from waterborne illnesses. That's equivalent to twelve full jumbo jets crashing every day. How can it be that we have a dozen jets crashing every day and we're not doing anything about it? How does it happen that we let five thousand of our children die when we have everything it takes--but human will--to fix the problem?"

Thought-provoking quotes are scattered throughout the book:

-Frederick Buechner: "The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet."

-Martin Luther King, Jr.: "True compassion is more that flinging a coin to a beggar; it comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring."

-Max De Pree: "The measure of leadership is not the quality of the head, but the tone of the body."

-Miguel de Cervantes: "When we dream alone it is just a dream, but when we dream together it is the beginning of reality."

When multiplied millions live on under a dollar a day, and the CEO of Yahoo! manages on only $4 million a week, something is wrong. When the current CEO-worker pay gap is 458 to 1, something is wrong. Thought leaders look at the health of humanity and search for ways to better the world. The author says, "Thought leaders inspire change--personal change, social change, cellular and systemic change. They are not redirecting traffic on the old thoroughfares, but building superhighways of communication that transport people to destinations of heightened awareness, broadened perspectives, and a truer, deeper sense of their place and purpose in life."

This book was not what I expected. I was looking for a book to help me be more original and creative. I found a book which challenged me to live with authenticity and integrity. I've started. And I'd recommend the book to everyone.

An excellent book adaptable to almost any environment where customers are encountered. The Disney Institute is "over the top" when it comes to caring for their guests (read: customers) and any business person would do well to study their methods. You won't adopt everything Disney does, but you will find success in implementing the fundamentals of how to treat your "guests" in any business.

This is not your typical self-help book. It's real: like a first reading of Emerson or Darwin, it has the potential to profoundly change how you see yourself and others. Interestingly, I have NEVER had it returned after lending out a copy. And that's okay.

I normally consider myself a non-reader, but I was at a point in my life that things were changing very quickly and I need to know about the journey I was on. When I began the book, I asked myself "How will I know when I am reading about myself?" It happened in chapter five when my eyes welled up. I knew then as it described who I used to be and validated to me that my journey was on the path of maturity. I read two thirds of the book on the first day, a major event for a non-reader. The book captured me and enlightened me.

This is one of five books ever written that everyone in the universe needs to read; This book tackles the question of what it means to be a mature adult, no "ifs ands or buts". In this book, Beecher and Beecher answer the question that every adult has asked himself, "What is wrong with ____ (fill in the blank with someone you can't stand)?!", and the question that every adult should ask himself, "What kind of person do I need to be and how do I get there?". This book was required reading in one of my undergraduate psychology classes and I recommend it to anyone who wants to become a better person--really. I also recommend it to therapists doing insight-oriented group or individual therapy (either as a whole or taken in chapters).
Overall, the book is filled with memorable witty-isms (the potentate who carpeted his entire kingdom because he couldn't stand walking on rough ground--why not just wear shoes on your own feet?) that you will find yourself recounting long after you have read the last page.

Well Well. The greatest book for those that can't find good feedback; and those hopelessly lost in self-help mantras and the like. Before you give me a story, realize that I see it as such. I hate stories! I can't care! Understand that you are trying to get a free ride; avoid paying your share (our national pastime?) and blaming others. You Lose! Read this book and see the ugly truth!

I first read this book 30 years ago. I am still reading it! Its' words cut like a two edge sword through all self delusion. It helps to bring the reader back to a realistic, "doable in the now" approach to life. I don't think I've ever read another book that was such a bitter pill for my ego and yet the positive effects on my life are still occuring. I knew Willard and he embodied the principles he wrote about. He somehow transmitted peace and serenity to whomever was in his presence. I still to this day use him as a standard from which to judge myself. Because words without the embodiment of their meaning are worthless. I not only highly recommend the book I recommend reading it as many times as necessary to find that place inside you that Willard describes in the introduction of the book as the eye of the hurricane where the sun is shining and the birds are singing!

Since I named my son Graham after Bill, I thought perhaps I should know a little bit more about his life. I now now know alot more!

It is written in a narative style which makes it very easy to read. The stories are told by the people who were there, some happy, some sad ,some very funny.

If you are interested in the life of this man or even the history of modern day Rock and Roll Concert Production, how it started and evolved, I highly recomend this book.

This book is a little weird (to me) in concept but it works out really well in the end. The book goes from Bill's early days in Nazi Germany all the way to his death with no major stone left unturned. Lots of great stories with very little in the way of punches being pulled. I mean Bill really tells you what he is thinking. Very uncensored. Covers the drugs and the behind scenes stuff with no BS involved. Shows the guy for who he was, warts and all and lets him and the people he is talking about retort one another which I thought was weird in a good way. This book is of great interest to anyone who has probably gotten to this point in reading reviews. If you are interested in this type of subject then this book is a must.

This book is structured so that as Bill Graham comments on different times of his life, he allows the persons hes speaking of to comment in the next paragraph. This makes for some very interesting reading. Grham discusses his time in Korea and killing the enemy. This experience allows him to have an abundant amount of courage when it comes to dealing with band managers in the future. Bill discusses Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Zeppelin, the Stones, J Geils Band, Santana, the Who and all the tense dealings with each of these personalities. This book could have benefitted from better pictures of the bands. Thats my only critical comment.

This is a good, solid, book covering the "basics" of money management. It can be said that Mary Hunt is just reiterating philosophies of money management that have been preached over the decades, if not centuries. Better, more comprehensive, readings include "The Millionaire Next Door", "Your Money Or Your Life", "The Complete Tightwad Gazette", and "The Richest Man In Babylon."

That being said, this book did introduce me to one innovative idea of which I have incorporated into my financial arsenol. It's what called the "Freedom Account". The Freedom Account is a fantastic tool devised by Hunt to manage payment of irregular,
non-monthly bills. The concept is not new, but Hunt's system is definitely the best I've ever come across.

My philosophy on reading books has always been that if I can get just one great new idea, then the investment in time and money is worth it. I can assure you that if you decide to buy this book, the "Freedom Account" system alone is well worth the investment.

If you're broke or having money problems, buy this book now!

Has worrying about money or paying your bills ever kept you up at night?

Me, too. Until I found this book.

About 7 years ago, our family was suffering from unbelievable money problems. Depressed and confused, I decided to stop by the bookstore and browse the personal finance section. There was only one problem. I didn't have twenty or thirty dollars to buy money management advice. I decided to get Mary's book and could not believe how many great examples and strategies she gave for reducing debt.
By following Mary's instructions, our family quickly began reducing our debt and wiped out almost $ 20,000 of credit card bills within a few years.
Her book is my money "Bible" and like scriptures in a holy work, I have highlighted paragraphs on almost every page that give insights into a subject that had always been beyond my control.

This book saved my marriage and brought me peace.
I highly recommend it. . . to everyone.

This is a good book for a great cause: getting and staying out of debt. However, after reading it, I liked Dave Ramsey's Money Makeover and Financial Peace University MUCH better - more thorough, great ideas, and fabulous examples of how a little money can grow w/ time - which this book, CM, is lacking.

Sound Guidance!

Review Date: 2008-08-15
In our current economic climate personal finance has become the priority of many. Pitfalls abound, so the need for sound financial guidance is critical for all consumers - those who are financially sound and those navigating rough waters. In order to prevent financial disaster, or recover from one, it is imperative that we learn to control our money so our money doesn't control us.

The Complete Personal Finance Handbook: Step-by-Step Instructions to Take Control of Your Financial Future begins with the logical first step of creating and analyzing a budget. That information is supplemented in the next chapter on banking; the author helps you navigate the banking system and gives sound instruction on keeping your accounts balanced to keep your budget in tact.

The following chapters on saving, wealth management, insurance, and retirement are designed to help you keep more of your money and put it to work. Then, The Complete Personal Finance Handbook: Step-by-Step Instructions to Take Control of Your Financial Future addresses the wise use of credit, how to avoid bankruptcy, and improving your credit history if you have already made some mistakes.

The chapter on buying a home is particularly relevant since so many are making their first foray into real estate. The Complete Personal Finance Handbook: Step-by-Step Instructions to Take Control of Your Financial Future is an invaluable primer for the first-time home buyer to navigate the terminology and processes involved in buying a home.

The included appendices in The Complete Personal Finance Handbook: Step-by-Step Instructions to Take Control of Your Financial Future give the readers sample documents, checklists, and worksheets to manage every aspect of your finances.

Knowledge is power, and The Complete Personal Finance Handbook: Step-by-Step Instructions to Take Control of Your Financial Future gives you the power correct or improve your financial future whether you are financially stable or financially troubled.

Need to learn how to balance a budget, buy a home, or save enough money so you can retire in style? In her book, " The Complete Personal Finance Handbook," author Teri B. Clark presents personal financing in a clear and concise manner. In 16 easy-to-understand chapters, she teaches the reader how to organize one's budget, buy a home, invest smartly, save for your children's college, hire a personal planner, and much more.

This is, in my opinion, the most common-sense book on home financing yet, as the author uses simple language and lots of real-life examples throughout the text. In addition to the different real-life case studies, the author provides a plethora of handy appendices at the end of the book that contain tools like Q and A sheets for your stock broker or a financial advisor, sample real-estate contracts, and much more. A glossary of terms also allows a quick glance in case readers want to look up a certain financial term.

What I especially liked in this book were detailed descriptions of various financial scams out there and how to protect yourself and avoid them. Also eye-opening was a lengthy but interesting chapter on saving for retirement, along with financial charts and other tools. This handy little book should be a part of everyone's library because saving money should be everyone's concern.

Lifelong Financial Success!

The Complete Personal Finance Book should be on every high school and college graduate's gift list. If every graduate--or at least most--read this title, we would no longer hear news reports of massive credit problems, home loan foreclosures, and the "savings crisis." However, don't short-change yourself if you're not a recent graduate. This book has invaluable lessons on when and how to plan for retirement, and invest in stocks and bonds. Not sure how much life, disability or car insurance you need? This handbook spells it all out!

Truly - if you are serious about achieving financial success - no matter your age or credit status, this book can help you achieve your goals. As a reader who has never fully understood how stocks and bonds work, or how to ladder a CD, I can honestly say I can talk with confidence about these topics.

In addition to the straight talk on how to save money and reduce fees, I particularly benefitted from the "Now You Know" summaries at the end of each chapter. The Appendices include a wealth of useful information ranging from sample budget and insurance forms, retirement worksheets, real estate contracts and a section on selecting a financial advisor. The money you save by reading these sections will more than pay for the book! In short, no one should open an account or incur any debt before reading this book!

Learn How To Better Manage Your Money

Learn how to better manage your money and become wealthier no matter where you are financially by saving and budgeting with this book. Every financial topic that one might encounter is presented in each chapter. Certain financial books can be overwhelming and difficult to understand, but both basic and thorough information can be understood because of the author's use of examples, exercises and bullet points that advise, encourage, and challenge. All the information you need to understand and improve your finances is included complete with outside resources.

If you have made mistakes with your money in the past or are in debt, this book can help you fix and avoid those mistakes so your credit score will improve. The chapter on saving is written in a whole different approach to the reader. First, the author explains why you should save and how your finances will improve if you start or continue to save your money. I found this type of approach gave me motivation to keep my money instead of spending it. I also found it helpful that the author explained how current economic issues and taxes affect an individual's finances and what to do so you don't become a victim to economic conditions. Clark lets the reader know every aspect of how your money is involved in the banking system in Chapter 2 and does the same for more difficult topics.

After reading this book and answering some of the questions presented to me in the text, I felt I understood my finances better and incorporated my goals into a financial plan that is sure to be rewarding in the near future. You will be surprised how much you didn't know about your finances before reading this book.

Personal Finance Bible

The Complete Personal Finance Handbook: Step-by-Step Instructions to Take Control of Your Financial Future is a real good book. I've read several Suze Orman books and Your Money or Your Life and other such tomes. And I've tossed aside several books on personal finance that couldn't hold my interest past a couple pages. But because of Personal Finance Handbook's comprehensiveness, clarity of explanation, detail and upbeat tone many will consider it their finance bible.
The book starts with budgeting and moves step-by-step through saving (in a multitude of ways), keeping track of your money, banking, the thrill of compound interest, financial advisors, insurance, investing and more.
"Now You Know" charts recap the chapters' main points. And gently, but frankly the book helps people through the emotional aspect of handling money. For example: budgeting and saving bring peace of mind. Yet, if you're in financial trouble, this book will help you without shaming you. Finally, Personal Finance Handbook contains helpful appendices, glossary and index.
The book's only fault is its lack of spacing between words and sentences in the foreword.

The hard part about starting or running a business is not the long hours, the tight deadlines, or the stresses of being overworked in the face of an insecure future. The real challenges that make or break us surround dealing with our own integrity, our priorities, and conflicts with others.

This book covers those challenges and offers many tools and examples of how we can manage them and come out ahead having built a stronger foundation and a stronger company.

I personally can't stand the idealistic tones of the book but I will admit, unlike most of these books that I have read, this one is much more grounded inthe harsh challenges of reality such as the fact that, while in business and in dealing with others failure is not an option but success is not always achieved.

If you read this book you will find yourself referencing it as you deal with life on any level because the authors clear mind and direct language gives you the language to describe and communicate the situation and how best to manage it.

Fred Kofman does a good job explaining his concepts, however his accent can be a little disconcerting at first. If you are a Landmark Education graduate, the material on these CD's is very nearly a rip-off of the same concepts (i.e., having Integrity, Honoring your Word, etc...). For non-Landmark graduates, these CD's cover many soft-skills concepts that can be effective in your personal life, but he applies them (a little obscurely) to a work environment. If you are trying to get your own business off the ground, "Conscious Business" does not offer strategies for doing so, but rather best practices to remain successful. In other words, you won't find tips regarding how to file your returns, collect data effectively, or document discipline. You will instead find tips about the importance of keeping your word, how to stop stressing about work, and things of that nature. The program was not bad--in retrospect, I would have found it no more than $15 worth of value. Take that for what you will.

Written by Fred Kofman (co-founder and president of Axialent consulting company), Conscious Business: How to Build Value Through Values is a straightforward guide to applying conscious awareness to its fullest extent, recognizing the needs of others, and effectively expressing one's own needs order to build responsibility, integrity, leadership, and reputation - all of which are invaluable tools to a business' continued success. Drawing from real-world examples by such famous companies as Microsoft, Yahoo!, and much more, Conscious Business reveals how being mindful of fundamental human virtues and even "spiritual" questions such as "Who am I?" and "What is my real purpose here?" are positive, empowering assets. A clarion call for balancing fiscal obligations with ethical and moral responsibilities for increased success in all dimensions of business life.

Business is an essential part of our lives. Doing business consciously, Fred Kofman, a co-founder of the consulting firm Axialent, is an essential part of living consciously. The author presents a business model where managers are more conscious of the inner and outer lives of employees.

Anyone who works intuitively understands there are two types of managers. As a professor of accounting, Kofman begin his classes by having students listen to one of Beethoven's pieces over and over. Gradually the students would realize that the music was not in the CD; but in the listening. In music as in business, Information's only value is in how it is interpreted.

Most recognize the need for smart employees with the latest in technical competency. Kofman argues it is more important, and less recognized, that organizations recruit and retain employees with high-level consciousness.

He draws a contrast between unconscious attitudes and their conscious counterparts. They are:

Unconscious Attitudes.....................Conscious Attitudes
Unconditional Blame.......................Unconditional Responsibility
Essential Selfishness........................Essential Integrity
Ontological Arrogance.....................Ontological Humility
Unconscious Behaviors....................Conscious Behaviors
Manipulative Communication..........Authentic Communication
Narcissistic Negotiation....................Constructive Negotiation
Negligent Coordination.....................Impeccable Coordination
Unconscious Reactions.....................Conscious Reactions
Emotional Incompetence...................Emotional Mastery.

These qualities are simple to understand; yet, they are difficult to implement. They represent common sense; yet, they are not found widely in common practice. They seem natural, yet they challenge deep-seated assumptions individuals hold about themselves, others and their world.

Kofman opens the reader's conscious to a unique resource for maximizing profit and potential in the workplace and beyond. Written concisely and coherently he communicates an uncommon wisdom about the truth of our emotions and healthy interpersonal practices in business and life.

This is a great book that explores the theories and history behind some of the major business/manufacturing practices used today. It illuminates the key mistakes of the US auto industry, chronicles the rise of Japanese dominance in electronics manufacturing, and provides clear direction for the business leaders of today. In short, Quality is everything. Great read, highly recommended.

This book seems geared more towards managers not currently implementing a Deming style approach - almost trying to convince one why the Deming style is better.

The bulk of the book seems to stress Deming's 14 points. The author touches on (well, more than touching but less than 'in depth') profound knowledge. He also talks about current management styles and how that is dangerous to a company and its customers and employees' well being (management by objectives, bonuses *ouch*, things you see a lot etc). While reading some of those, you might think, "OH, I've definitely seen this at MY workplace."

This book does not go deep into Deming, the man (though you might get some major plot points of his life). If you are looking for the statistical aspects or deeper how-tos, this book is probably not the best option for you either. I take that back, his how-to implement a Deming style system in your work place consisted of the following: hire a consultant. Sometimes, the material within the chapters seems repetitive.

I find Deming and his concepts well deserving of 5 stars, but this book is closer to a 3.5.

This is a great book on the principles of Deming.

It contains much of the same information as Out of Crisis, but is more readable (though less detailed).

This book (and Deming) changed the way I looked at quality.

Good book on Deming's teachings.

This should be required reading for anyone in a leadership position. Dr. Deming is the "father" of the Japanese business revolution that took place after WWII.

Even if this book was selling for retail, I'd still suggest heading out and buying a copy as soon as possible. It's THE book that can lead a potential entrepreneur from a vague feeling of "I need to start a business" to actually overseeing a successful venture. There are no theoretical Harvard Business School theories here. These techniques work, and are explained in a way that anyone with an average intelligence can understand. Further, it encourages excitement, and stimulates motivation so that dreamers can bring their ideas to light.

I can't recommend this book enough. I'd give it seven stars if I could.

Probably the World's Most Valuable & Enduring Business Book (Top 10).

I stumbled across this book shortly after starting my 3rd company (1991). This baby is chock-full of truly interesting, readable prose.
Invaluable references.
"Real Life" examples of entrepreneur's in the trenches.
VC's at the bargaining table.

Lessons such as "The Okie Mechanic", "Establish Your Mini-Incomes", "The 40-Inch Hardboiled Egg" and others are as applicable today as they were back in '77. Replace "manufacturing plant" with "web development team" and you'll never know the difference.

Richard White and his band of 17+ consultants, VC's and company founders (primarily Silicon Valley but the stories are from all over the map) made this book happen. How Chilton got hold of it, and why they have not wrapped a complete business program around it is beyond me.

At times, you cannot find this book anywhere on the used market. Ocassionally booksellers show a few dozen copies. Either way, get yourself a copy, and pick up 3 for your closest friends, business partners and your kids.

You won't regret it.

I've used this as a sound guide in consulting to hundreds of clients. it never ceases to bring forth some associative wisdom and true-stories from the client... and leads the way in solving many an issue.

Oh, and for those who have loaned it out never to see it again?

Good. Get yourself another copy to give away.
I believe I'm on number 34 or 35.

31 years later and on my second copy, this is STILL the one I keep coming back to when it's time to start up something very special. Written by someone who's been there - done that and is willing to tell all. Unlike most business books that claim so much yet deliver so little, this one comes through in spades. Want to fire up a new company --- the right way --- the first time --- and do it with others you can motivate all along the way? If so, then look no further. Definately aging well.

Holds up very well for its age -- nothing as good on my shelf today

The Entrepreneur's Manual came highly recommended, so I tracked down a copy. I'm glad I did -- it's very good. Don't judge this book by its cover. Or by the old-fashioned printing fonts and style. This book's contents hold up very well for their age. In fact, I have nothing as good on my shelf even today.

Much like Dale Carnegie's books, Richard White's book stands the test of time. Anyone starting up a new company will have plenty of advice. But good advice? That is rare. You will find good advice here. Better, on the topics it covers, than you will find anywhere else.

One of the best, if not THE Best, Business Start-Up book...

Rich White died some years back, he was working on the updated version of EM. The complete revision was nearing completion when he took sick. To the best of my knowledge the revision was never submitted to Chilton.

Rich was a close and dear friend, we sent many a hour *brainstorming* and sometimes *barnstorming* new ideas....

I spoke to him 3 days before he died.

He was exactly as he sounds in his book...

His friends do indeed miss him...

Essential reading for Executives focused on company growth

McGrath and MacMillan have achieved what dozens of authors have only hoped for - written a book that contains strategies and tactics that are powerful and immediately actionable.

The Entrepreneurial Mindset is packed with tools that can be used by CEOs, Division Managers, Product Managers and anyone responsible for driving profitable company growth. Many of the techniques in the book appear deceptively straightforward - yet are powerful and immediately practical.

Concepts like Attribute Mapping and Consumption Chain analysis, for example, can serve as a core framework for developing - or repositioning - existing products and services. The goal is to move away from selling commodities, and creating valueable (and profitable) offerings that customers absolutely must have.

I have used these concepts numerous times and with great success.

You like to learn the entrepreneurial mindsets from this book. The authors teach this course, at the Executive MBA program, of Columbia Univeristy (only $15,000 for five days). Of course your company pays for it. If not, reading this book is a good alternative ($20 is not bad). The problem with the book, is generality. It does not provide examples of any individual or firm that has been successful with the use of the entrepreneurial mindset. It is like teaching you all the theory to be successful, but no examples on how these theories can be put into action. I stronly disagree with most of the reviewers here that this is a useful book to start a business. It is not. However if you wish to learn the theory, this is the book for you. I would like to find out if the authors themselves, started any business of their own by using these theories.
