An equipment glossary with an editorial bias
Helpful Votes: 23 out of 26 total.
Review Date: 2000-01-25
Professional Digital Photography was well organized and contained alot of information but seemed to be more an elaborate glossary for beginning photographers with too much space dedicated to past equipment overviews and not enough hands-on information concerning digital photography, scanning and output. The editorial style had a bias that was distracting:example,"...a microlab can process 8-10 rolls of film an hour and be operated by a highschool student with a nose ring."

A book to avoid at all costs

This book is serious - seriously bad! Even its title is misleading: a professional photographer does not want or need a book that includes half a page explaining what a camera shutter is - nor do most amateurs. The authors impress with their wit, but not with their ability to present information well or accurately: terms (such as "raster"), are used, but not defined until later in the book; a subject can be repeated a page or so after it is first covered; and subjects are dealt with in a superficial manner. Worst of all, the book contains serious inaccuracies eg. a CD-R has a capacity of 65MB (yes, 65), and a 15" CRT monitor weighs 40lb / 88kgs. Unless you want to spend hours checking every piece of information given, steer well clear!

Terribly disappointing

Actually, zero stars

I had high expectations for this book but was utterly disappointed. This book has not had even elementary copy editing performed -- I found *hundreds* of typographical and technical errors -- and the writing style had short, simple sentences that was maddening to read when compared to the wonderful writing of (say) Stroustrup. The authors have chosen a graphical model to represent class hierarchies that I have not seen before and found very hard to visualize, and their "introduction" to inheritance and class construction was disorganized and confusing (a new C++ user would be lost). Their description of manipulators was cursory and disappointing, and their real examples later in the book didn't seem to use any extended ones.

Some of their code examples have merit -- notably communications ports -- but the technical material surrounding the code was bug-ridden (all the the RS-232 diagrams had mistakes, for instance).

The Stroustrup *chapter* on iostreams was much better than this whole book, so I cannot recommend this book to anybody. I'll be sending mine to the authors with my markups in the hope they fix the bugs, but even without the bugs it was a terrible book.

I wish I would have read the previous review before buying it. All I needed was some general information (structure etc.) on how iostreams work and this book did little for me. I do not recommend it to anyone

A Poor Choice for Digital Photographers
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2003-12-12
This book is at best a beginner introduction to digital photography and Photoshop. The author shows how he "enhanced" a range of photos using Photoshop. In many cases, the enhancements are questionable and/or so subtle as to make little difference to the result. I learned nothing from it. There are far, far better books available for digital photographers who wish to learn how to use Photoshop to enhance their photos. Give this one a pass.

This lab manual may ask essenital questions, but how do you find the answers. I am presently using four other A+ certification books and various websites to answer the questions. I am not sure why Cisco had him to write the lab manual and two other authors two write the companion book. The authors of the book are David Anfison and Ken Quamme. I am assuming that they were unable to communicate - by mail, email or pigeons, so each just guessed what information the other would put into their portion of the writing project. What this boils down to is that neither item is useful to anyone.

This article just touts a new piece of software called 'nonprofit books' that i've purchased and don't like very much. I was trying to find informatin on how to set up quickbooks without using this software and all i purchased was a promotional piece of nonsense about how good it is supposed to be. I'd like my money back.

I have been trying to find this video and was happy to see it listed on amazon....I thought. In the description:Microsoft musical instruments. (CD-ROM drive) (Hardware Review) (Evaluation): An article from: Notes
I jumped to the conclusion this was a copy of the original cd with its review and evaluation. No so and very disappointed. Would be nice to have seller put in capital letters.....THIS IS NOT THE CD, JUST A REVIEW! Of course maybe that was left out on purpose........... I just paid six bucks for text that told me what I already knew!!!!
Not happy!

This book should be renamed as "Adventures in Microsoft Office".

The book has almost nothing to do with MIS or managing information systems. Instead it is just a collection of exercises related to Microsoft Office's Excel and Access.

Given the content of the book, it definitely does not justify the exorbitant price...

What appears to have been written and endorsed by veteran photographers, this book is little more than old schoolers showing their age. Cheesy Photoshop filters and horrific composites that would never see the light of day in a commercial application, such as advertising or magazine. The Author shows his lack of experience by the over use of noise-filled duotones of each contributor's personal photograph. The cover is the best example of retouching in the whole book. Tim Kelly and Jim DiVitale do show they are among the few with real talent, but they do so in their photography -- not in Photoshop. Since this book lead me to believe that it was about digital photography, perhaps that's why I appreciated their sections. The others need to walk away from the computer until they can tastefully use it. Bad examples.

I will end with this, there are no real illustrations of technique in this book. It's mostly what I would catergorize as a series of mini-portfolios -- many not very good. I'm glad I bought this used so that I can toss it without hesitation.
