I'll bet not one person in a hundred who is employed in the addictions field has any idea of the history of their profession. This is a history book that is chock full of the befuddled efforts of millions of people who have tried almost everything to get sober. Carrie Nation, The Keeley Institute, Kellogg and his corn flakes, the gold IV injection treatment, and the use of methamphetimine right down to MADD... this book details a group of people who, on their own, tried to fight addiction and support each other in their sobriety. All this without the help of the government until recent times. A textbook, a whodunnit, an emotional journey through hell and out the other side This is the definitive history of addiction treatment attemps in the United States of America. How anyone can call themselves a therapist and not have an intimate knowledge of this material is beyond me. Three thumbs up!

This is one of the most comprehensive historical books on the history of addiction treatment and recovery I have read. Not just a history of Alcoholics Anonymous, it covers the cures, the fakes, the trials and tribulations of attempting to treat alcoholism and other drug addiction in America.

It should be a "must read" for anyone interested in treatment and recovery. William L. White did a great service for the treatment field by writing this book

At one level this is a coming of age story, but it is far deeper than its surface adventures suggests. The procession of wise beings who introduce the hero to altered states, western thought and spiritual sexuality are well worth the read.
A brilliant synthesis of wisdom and a good story besides.

I found this lovely story exciting and energising - couldn't put it down, and read it in less than a day. I was very involved and touched by the life journey of Panaga, which begins when his parents are killed in a road accident, and goes on to describe his Shaman training by an old aboriginal. This begins in childhood and early adulthood, and is followed by his entry into University and his passionate affair with Persephone, Priestess of the underworld. Being a many dimensional story, it has the ability to lift one from the mundane into the higher levels of understanding and consciousness. Treat yourself, buy the book!!

This is an adventure story which gathers you into its winged craft and carries you through the outback of Australia and into the deepest recesses of the mind of the sage. I loved the intimacy I felt with the characters and the way Earl Dorney convinced me with authentic details of life in the outback. The heroic journey of a young boy, Pannaga, orphaned and of mixed origins, resonated with my own feeling that I don't quite belong. I too have sought teachers and adventures to somehow purify myself. This book, like the books by Carlos Castaneda provides me with a guide to how to be in this world and where to look for my next adventure. I recommend it to any who have a yen for adventure and a love of meaningful detail. Dr. Dorney writes with the precision of a surgeon. (I think you can trust this medic to operate on your soul).

A Great Classic on Christian Discipleship

This book is a classic study of Jesus' teaching and training of his disciples (first published in 1871). When I first read it, I was fascinated by the light it shed on my reading of the Gospels. It is a very valuable study for any Christian who serves in any form of leadership capacity or anyone seeking to be a disciple of Jesus Christ.

The book's 31 chapters give an absorbing commentary on selected passages of the four Gospels, following in chronological order Jesus ministry and teaching among his disciples. The writing style will take a bit of getting used to for the average modern reader, but it's well worth the effort. There is also a table of Scripture references discussed in the book that make it useful reference work. Read it cover to cover first.

After the Bible, The Training of the Twelve has been one of the most influential books in my development as a Christian. Using a loose "harmony of the Gospel" approach, Bruce uses all four gospel narratives to show how Jesus discipled His disciples. The book's greatest strength is that it is NOT a how-to book on discipleship or a 12-step program for leadership development. Instead, Bruce exegetes the passages showing what Jesus was doing with his disciples and leaves contemporary application to the reader. Written in the late 1800's, Bruce's use of the English language is outstanding, but many people used to USA Today type writing (monosylabic words, one sentence equals one paragraph) may find it difficult. It is well worth the effort. I find myself rereading it almost every other year. The first few times I read it as a disciple - what did Jesus want me to learn as His follower? Then I began to read it as a discipler - how can I be more effective in the process of making disciples? Now I also use it as a parent - how can I shepherd my lambs the way Jesus shepherded His? Transcending cultures, I have had the privilege of using this book to train small group leaders in the U.S. and around the world. Theologically sound, biblically true, I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to obey Jesus's command to make disciples.

Diane Walter has created the ultimate OJT book and resources in this book! It is very practical, loaded with worksheets and checklists that are useable as presented or easily adaptable, and very well organized. Ms. Walters has helped my organize my approach to creating proprietary software training as well as training my SME trainers.

Regardless of your years' experience in training, you should get this book. It goes on my shelf (if it ever gets there) next to my few other books that I can't live without.

A friend recently loaned me the book, Training On the Job. I LOVE it! It's the best "how-to" approach for developing OJT that I've ever read. Kudos to the author. She filled a void in the OJT literature.

I've helped groups develop procedures and OJT for years. Have always used a high-involvement approach but have never had the "system" to my work that is outlined so clearly in Training On the Job. I'm very thankful for the book. The approach it describes will help me to be even more effective and efficient as a consultant and coach for clients. It will also be a good resource for educating them about the methods we're applying so that we can collaborate even better. GREAT STUFF! Kudos to Diane Walter for writing such a helpful OJT book.

Truly the Best On-the-Job Training Book on the Market!

I'm really impressed with the simplicity of this approach and the clarity it brings to teaching and evaluating trainees. Walter's emphasis on the role of teams, subject matter experts, and on-the-job trainers is causing us to rethink our entire training program. Anyone can use the methodology by following the guidelines that are clearly established. This system combines sound principles of instructional design and human factors with an approach that breaks into manageable pieces the often overwhelming task of developing structured OJT. The book provides all the tools you need. It describes in eight easy steps, how to develop a complete structured on-the-job training program that is set up and run by employees who perform the job. Each chapter is self-contained so that you can use what you want, when you want it - everything from identifying the need for on-the-job training, to completing a task analysis, to writing training materials, to selecting, training and certifying trainers, and conducting OJT. Every chapter tells you step-by-step what to do, when to do it, and how to do it. Anyone who wants to standardize procedures and processes and train in a consistent manner should own this book!

This Training System REALLY Works!

I wish I had had this book when we first started our OJT program! The book takes you step-by-step through a simple OJT process that any employee can understand and implement. We have used this team-driven approach and it has greatly improved our training effectiveness and efficiency, improved processes and procedures, and has brought a real spirit of ownership and pride among our employees. It's now one of our Best Practices. This is a great book and fun to read too - it's definitely THE book for anyone who wants to set up a successful on-the-job training program.

Very funny book, and unique perspective on the dog-human relationship. Had me laughing out loud in several sections, especially as my own dog has trained me on some of Tess's same lessons. Also insightful to many human quirks, and how our habits are viewed from the dogs' perspective. Great gift for dog lovers, and keep one for yourself.

"Give up any possibilities of becoming the greatest person in the world by your training [, or] that you will be invited to more little clubs and gatherings by your proteges or friends who are impressed with you."

It's like that.

The first time he saw this book, Trungpa says, "I was relieved that Buddhism was so simple and that you could actually do something about it. You can actually practice. You can just follow the book and do as it says."

Rules of thumb, away from your reading chair.

I prefer to read, not practice. I am a snob for exotic lingo and mind-bending concepts, any chance to show my cleverness. This book turns me around, the way a long walk with a deaf grandmother would. Whatever clever thing I say, she only nods, looking ahead, and points alongside our path: "Gather these, over here" and "scatter those, over there."

Gather these.

Warning: Using this book could be hazardous to your ego! This book deserves any practicing Buddhist's attention. I've been Buddhist for a little over 2 years, and I wouldn't say I'm a very good one, but I feel that in the heart of all of Buddha's Dharma is Bohdichitta, the cultivation of loving-kindness. No book has been more useful to me in this practice; it is basically the mentality necessary to keep us from straying from the path of enlightenment eloquently spoken by The Venerable Chogyam Trungpa. Once one read and contemplates these slogans and their meaning they seem to rest in the back of the mind and as the introduction states they will rise at the time when they are need to stop your habitual mind's process(usually at the first thought). I recommend anyone who truly wants to change they're entire mentality to read this book, and any other book's that are based on loving-kindness or the seven points of mind training slogans.

I was turned off by the idea of "slogans," and did not read this book the first few times I came across it. However, when I began studying Tong Len, (Unconditional Giving and Taking during the In and Out breath), I found several pages of very good commentary on Tong Len in this book. The slogan says something like, "Unconditional Giving rides the Out Breath, Unconditional Taking rides the In Breath." but when you read what all this means, it is truly the essence of buddhism. (I think this slogan originates from the Way Of The Bodhisattva or Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life by Santideva or Shantideva, which is an excellent book in any of the several English translations now available.) Chogyam Trungpa can be flippant and condescending, which he calls "heavy handed," and explains as a form of compassion. This may or may not be accurate. As a reader, take the parts of this book that resonate with your inner compassion, and let the other parts lie.

The author has a sympathic, kind, knowledgable plan of training with the emphasis on the individual horse's needs in mind. Conformation, prospect selection and getting the right start are discussed. Jumper flat work is defined and described vs.classical dressage. Many useful exercises are described to improve the horse's ability to become a more ridable jumper.
The jumping exercises are well planned and well written.
A very useful book, with nice photos and a helpful sections on problem correction.

This is a must have for serious jumper riders/trainers. Gives very useful advice over fences. Not much detail on flatwork, but stresses how important it is. There is a huge difference in how they prepare horses in Germany versus in the US. I think if more trainers in the US used even some of the ideas in the book (I also have the book) and the dvd they would have fewer training problems and better balanced horses. Great DVD!

While I'm not intent on producing Grand Prix showjumpers, I found this well-written book immensely helpful in giving me guidelines, ideas and inspiration for training my own young horse who I ultimately hope to event. It isn't a step-by-step recipe book on 'how to teach your horse to jump', but it's packed full of information, diagrams and photographs on every aspect of training a jumper from evaluating their potential, to jumping training, to keeping the horse healthy and sound. No stone is left unturned, and I was very impressed with the amount of bookspace devoted to correct flatwork training.

It's a very readable book, especially to an amateur rider like myself. This book also includes photos that, for instance, demonstrate the less than perfect jumping poses (or, 'how not to do it') in amongst the examples that paint the perfect picture. 'Bad' examples are not always included in books even though they are just as essential in making understood a point, and it's refreshing to see these included! I also really liked the chapters on evaluating a horse's potential and maintaining soundness - good education for me and with great diagrams and photos.

Definitely a book that deserves to be added to your equestrian bookshelf!

The author writes from legendary experience as a thoroughbred trainer. Of course with any knowledge presented it can not possibly include every little detail regarding the subject but certain it can only enhance the experience one can acquire as a trainer.

Be that as it may, my motive behind purchasing this material was not that of becoming a trainer, but rather to become an outstanding horseplayer. To me, the more a horseplayer can learn about the horses including important details about how thoroughbreds are trained, the better.

This book offers exactly the information desired about training. I truly recommend others reviewing this material and also let me know what you think about the information, perhaps we can dialogue about the sport of training thoroughbreds. All the best! --- Stanley Pall

This is a cornerstone book for a racing library. There is a large amount of fundamental training information in this simply written little book.

The sections on conditioning schedules are invaluable. The degree of conditioning Burch afforded his horses is probably unmatched today.

Read this book, and then end it to your trainer (if he can read).

Impossible that present day horses would beat any horse trained by Preston Burch. Just read the exercise prescriptions in this book and be blown away. I certainly was. Here is carefully controlled training by a trainer understanding that his horses are participating in an athletic event. This is a book about conditioning equine athletes and also contains every other aspect of training and caring for thoroughbred race horses in a well written book by an individual who apparently understood the great care required. I held off reading this fearing it was dated, but what a pleasant surprise to find the extreme if succinct comprehensiveness here, every aspect is covered by a fellow who tried to do everything correctly. This is Ivers before Ivers, and one does wonder whatever happened to trainers like Max Hirsch and Preston Burch.

This book is an insightful and interesting guide into corporate America and the evolution of jobs in this country. The author's insightful look into finding a job is very helpful, especially for those new to business careers. Going hand in hand are the author's tips for getting and keeping jobs, which are perfect for those seeking new careers. The author's passion for this topic is evident and the look into the workings of office politics is very good. Also, I thought it was good that he addressed recruiters and headhunters as well as pointing out that job-related print ads are a very small part of what's offered and that often the best jobs are never advertised. This book is well thought out, with a good easy-to-read structure and very thorough in content.

So you are looking for a career. Not just a job that you could care less about in the long run. I mean a real career. The position you have dreamed about, studied for, and want with all your heart. Well there are many other people out there that want the same position you do. You must put your best foot forward and make yourself stand out.

That is where this gem of a book comes in handy. This book takes you from the first step of deciding upon your career, to past the last step of landing a position and beginning your long climb up the corporate latter. Chapters one - eight help readers develop an idea of what career they wish to strive for. Then shows how to build a strong strategy, research for opportunities, create a resume that won't get passed over or filed and forgotten, and how to shine during interviews. Chapters nine - eleven give sound advice in what to do once you have been hired. Chances are that the position you get hired for is not the one you have dreamed of. It is simply the first step to the climb up the corporate latter so you may reach your coveted position. These last few chapters will show you how to get up those first few rungs faster than normal.

***** The person who gave me this book said that I would probably cruise through the book in an afternoon. After all, it is only 118 pages. I recall thinking to myself that it should not even take me that long to read it. WRONG! I found myself going back and rereading sections. I high lighted parts, took notes, and carried the book with me to work for a few days. Personally, I have been climbing the corporate latter for several years now and found lots of advice that I could immediately put to use.

Whether you are in high school, college, or been part of the work force for a few decades, this book is worth every cent you pay for it. (And costs much less than going to even one business seminar.) This little book is rock solid and highly recommended. *****

Newly-minted college graduates and inexperienced business professionals new to the sometimes tricky world of white collar treachery are well advised to consider this "candid guide to a career in business," author Del Casino's instructional primer to many of the trial-and-error pains inherent along the unescorted path of the daily grind.

Del Casino, a veteran consultant, advisor, and principal in the investment management business, launches into several inspiring to-the-point rants along the way, crossing such territory as: "Taking Stock of Yourself," "Interviews," "Evaluating Offers," Lessons to Learn" and "Manage Your Career."

This is a powerful, effective, and at times brutally frank crash course in all the workplace necessities that cannot necessarily be found in any textbook. It is probably the most no-nonsense guide to business careers I've ever read and its organization and style make it an easy and enjoyable read.

If you have horses, you need this book. Even if you never plan to harness a horse in your life, you need this book. A greenhorn born in the big city, I found myself making a living in the country with a naughty pony and several untried young horses. I bought books, went to county fairs, talked to old hands. But what got me going in training my own was a combination of common sense, patience via a love of the animals, and this book. Plain and simple.

Lynn's drawings and photos are exactly perfect. He explains everything with just enough detail but never too much. He has a realistic, kind approach that guarantees to turn out a trusting, trustworthy working equine. For instance, using his methods for introducing a harness, I had an untried colt quietly accepting a harness within 20 minutes, with never a raised voice or tense moment, and by myself. Just the way it should be done.

No kidding. This is the book to get.

I agree that this book is awsome. Nothing any better has been written on the subject for sure. I strongly recommend it... But! Don't buy the overpriced "used" copies they list. They're no different from the brand new ones that you can still buy for just $32.95. If you can't get the new ones here just call the publisher direct at 1-800-876-2893. Nice folks.

The very best!

I found this book more useful than any other on the subject of training horses. It is in plain old english, easy for anyone to understand. Along with telling you how to do something there are step by step photos so you know exactly what the guy is talking about. Anyone that is training horses to drive or work should have this book. It's good for general training too.
