Wonderful language facilitation book!Review Date: 2000-04-27
A comprehensive resource for using children's picture books.Review Date: 1999-10-17
Originally written for speech-language pathologists, this revised edition is suitable for regular and special education teachers (from preschool on up) as well for parents who want to maximize their read-aloud times with their children in order to stimulate good language development. Many listed books are classic, familiar favorites, and most are currently available in school and public libraries, at bookstores, and on-line.
Do you want to encourage a particular language skill? Just look up what you want to enhance (whether it's vocabulary building, grammatical structures, critical thinking and more) in the easy-to-use Skills Index (p. 317) and find the book in 1, 2 or all 3 catalog sections. (One catalog for preschool through kindergarten, one catalog for children grades 1-5, and another catalog for children grades 6-12.)
Parents will find suggestions for selecting picture books that build good oral language skills as well as suggestions for how to read aloud to stimulate interaction and good communication skills in their children.
Teachers will find this a timesaving resource that includes reproducible handouts for parents (ideal for suggestions at parent conferences), books organized by thematic units (see Topic Exploration Index on p. 303) as well as loads of classroom activities for each book listed in the catalogs.
This is an all-around, time saving resource that gives a reader the extensive background needed for tapping the bounty of children's literature. It has been a popular best seller in its publisher's line of educational materials for many years.

Great buyReview Date: 2008-09-26
My only complaint is its not long enough, it covers things so indepth but in a way that anyone can understand it I only wish there was more to it.
it has several different solutions for each issue, which helps because each dog, household, situation, person is different.

Is this book misnamed?Review Date: 2008-10-10
I recently finished the new and completely revised 2008 Breakthough. Wow! It is probably 25% added or new material, but it is so fresh and up-to-date that I just got completely different things out of it. My time management skills had decayed due to the internet. The straightforward new ideas in this book have got me working effectively again. I am so grateful that the chapters on dealing with a recession have been expanded.I go to industry conferences, and newer speakers there were in high school or college at the time of the last recession,or in a completely different industry. Steve Finkel offers not wacky theories, but real facts and serious personal experience.
I just cannot speak too highly of this new edition. Even if you have the old one, buy this. And highlight it. Do it whether you are highly experienced or new. It WILL "explode your production". It's that good! I'd give it ten stars if I could. So will you.
Very ValuableReview Date: 2008-10-01
Highly recommended for serious recruiters to increase production!Review Date: 2008-09-19
I was shocked! It seemed as though this book was speaking directly to me. And I guess it was.
For serious executive search/recruiter professionals, this is the best most comprehensive and up-to-date product on how to dramatically increase your production you will ever find. The 2008 edition addresses the industry as it is today with 381 pages of specific effective information to improve your skills and income. I Know!
The chapter on "The Plateaued Recruiter" got me up and working again to improve my skills. The sections on "Coaching the Client"(not just the candidate) got me much more cooperative clients, and I know some hires have definitely resulted. Really,I can't speak too highly of this sophisticated modern book for recruiting professionals. But as the previous reviewer said, highlight it.For sure!
Next step for me. Steve Finkel's DVD series "The Art of Recruiting". The best producer I know said it was terrific. After this wonderful book, I'm sold!
The "industry bible" for recruiters. Now new and fully updated.. Review Date: 2008-09-18
I've just finished this brand-new and totally revised edition, and it is even better. Measurably, it's over 30 pages longer, but there are many more changes than just the page count. The chapter on time management is much expanded and includes highly valid sections on the internet; the portions of achieving consistent production in a slow market (talk about timely information!) is much more thorough. Steve Finkel's whole training career has been about increasing the production of already-good recruiters, and the chapters about keeping yourself on a fast learning curve are specific and VERY effective. My whole office of grumpy veterans is "rocking on" after our owner got a copy for each of us.
This new updated edition gets five stars. Six if I could do it.If you're a genuine search consultant/recruiter or want to be, buy and highlight this book. Don't just "read it". It is the Real Deal from the best in the business!
And is it worth getting this revised updated version if you already have the old one? Absolutely!

Immediate relief for lower back spasmReview Date: 2000-09-17
The long-term stretching & toning program is a lot like some yoga exercises...but with some very important--and seemingly subtle--differences that will protect your back from some of the dangerous stresses that certain yoga positions put you into.
It's a shame this book is out of print. Haunt your local used book stores until you find it!

Great Resource for Officer TrainingReview Date: 2007-11-30
Though the book is written by and for officers in churches within the Dutch Reformed tradition, I would highly recommend it for use in PCA (the denomination in which I pastor), OPC, and other Presbyterian denominations as well.
One of the best and most challenging chapters, written by editor Michael Brown, addresses the question of whether people with baptistic theology should be allowed to join Reformed churches. Though the Dutch Reformed answer this question differently than do Presbyterians (the former say "no," the latter "yes"), this question is nonetheless a crucial one with which all potential officers should wrestle, regardless of their denominations' take on this issue.
As a church planter in the Presbyterian Church in America I am in the process of training elders and deacons, and after having searched far and wide for quality curricula, I was thrilled to come across this well-written and accessible volume. I commend it highly.

Advice that can be applied to all forms of physical activityReview Date: 2008-07-15
Note: Branner is also the author of two others book with the titles "The Care and Feeding of a Soccer Player" and `The Care and Feeding of a Dancer." A lot of the text in those books is identical to this one, so if you buy one you for some practical purposes have the other two.
The book covers the exercise, mental, emotional, and nutritional aspects of raising a kid who enjoys sportsReview Date: 2008-07-15
We all know that exercising our bodies is good for us. We also know that real life is full of competition and there is winning and losing in all that we do. Athletics lets us exercise, have fun, and learn about competition when the stakes seem big, but are usually small. Organized sports consume more and more time in the life of many American children and young adults. As the author notes, "you learn to push yourself to your fullest potential, learn to take criticism as a compliment, and learn to gain confidence from each experience."
The author takes a responsible approach to fitness, nutrition, and competing to enhance your child's life, not consume it. Besides her own experience as an exercise physiologist, she has a board of medical and exercise experts who, I assume, looked over this material.
She also realizes that kids play sports differently and have different skill requirements according to age or grade level. Her advice for playing, learning skills, and warming up take all this in mind. I particularly like her discussion of common injury types and what you can do to prevent them. She also discusses the mental and emotional aspects of the game, including handling stress. Her food advice is quite good; if a bit too vegetarian for my tastes, but nothing here will be anything but good for you. She also deals with body image and distorted eating.
The author also guides you through getting the most from sports camp, how to be good sideline parents, and what to think about to become a successful and happy sports family. She also has a chapter on life lessons that can be learned from sports.
Good stuff.
