I am new this year to the Triathlon world and this book has helped me in my training more than anything besides hiring a personal coach. The programs are easy to follow and take approx 30 minutes to complete each day. You can choose whatever exercise you want to tailor it to your needs. I was never into stretching until I started this "guide". Now I understand why stretching and core strength are important in a Triathlete as well as in life. I give it 4 stars only due to the fact that it took me a while to figure out which exercise was what. Other than that if your looking to prepare for a Triathlon or even just want to get fit in approx 30 min a day, then this book will help you.

Excellent resource for serious traithletes and amateur atheletes alike. I purchased this book for my triathlete husband and one of his daughters who is a runner. Although he majored in physical education and has been an active athlete, teacher, and trainer himself all his life, this book has still helped him to improve his running ability. He now also owns a Seiko metronome and making good use of it with his indoor training on our treadmill. My husband is now 69 and still a winning triathlete!

As a triathlete going on my 15th season, I have seen most of the stuff out there. This book is great in that it starts by teaching running technique, which most people ignore. Sure we all know technique is crucial in swimming, but it is in running as well. The author also has a video on his "Evolution" run technique which I have on order.

He claims to have achieved significant efficiency and hence speed improvements in even long-time elite runners, and I believe it. Look at it it this way - you can spend $1000 on race wheels and gain 30secs, or spend a few dollars on this book and/or video and gain more time through efficiency increases.

He also points out that most running injuries are caused by poor technique, and I agree completely. If you have a nagging injury, fix your technique. I have seen this work myself on many runners - try it.

A wonderful bonus is that this book contains one of the best summaries of eating to get and stay lean that I have seen. An entire chpater is devoted to this, and makes the book well worth it if you are just trying to figure out how to lose weight.

This is a worthy and high return on investment book for any triathlete.

Hands on Instructions for Efficient Running

Sometimes you're glad when you're asked by Amazon to review a book - in some cases due to the fact that they stink, in others because you've purchased something that you really feel that you can recommend to others. This book belongs in the second category.

The Triathlete's Guide to Run Training is simply the most comprehensive and well structured, easy-to-read, hands-on book about running that I've ever seen (and believe me, as a triathlete I've gone through everything from Posetech to ChiRunning in my quest for reduced run times).

The book will take you through Technique (the actual physics of running, i.e., where does all that energy go that you spend on the track?, how to reduce energy waste and maximize forward propulsion, etc.), Training (planning, bricks, etc.), Preparations, and finally, Racing. The way it's done makes you understand just how good Mierke must be as a coach: everything is short, crisp and to the point.

If you're training by yourself, there are plenty of drills in the book that will take you a long way towards better running efficiency. If you're a coach, there's a lot of stuff from basic to advanced that you can use in your coaching. If you're training with a coach, give him the book and ask him to use it when coaching you - I did and the result has been remarkable: not only do I run faster, I run almost effortlessly after hard biking, and - moreover - I enjoy my running even during races. The only thing that has made that much of a difference for my racing is Total Immersion Swimming (which, by the way, also focuses on efficiency rather than raw power).

In short: highly recommendable book for anyone who's interested in running faster and more efficient (is there anyone who doesn't?). Extra plus for the integration of running into biking specifically and triathlon in general.

Profound and powerful, Turning Change into a Payday provides brilliant, timely directions that make us look past the drama in our lives.....at ourselves; it steers us back toward the spiritual principles of self-examination, integrity, courage, and contribution. Ralph Bruksos is right....in this ever-changing world, the only thing we really control are the choices we make. Bruksos pulls the covers on the dead-end paradigm --"Happiness is knowing who to blame".

Our bookstores are filled with titles offering a look at change - the cause, need for, and how to. Closer examination has revealed to me that there are an abundance of prophets and very few practitioners. Bruksos' writing style actually shows me through his experiences how he has practiced what he preaches. Read Turning Change into a Payday and join me on the high road to freedom.

If you read this volume, you will know how to accept and benefit from any change in your life, and how to help others do the same. In this book, Ralph writes that when we are ready to learn, the teacher will appear. That is certainly true in my case. I want to share with you how - as student of Ralph Bruksos, I have benefited from applying his teachings to my life.

One day in March 2000, I received a phone call from Ralph, who was looking for someone to create a brochure for him. We met and, after just one hour in his presence, I understood that I needed to visit his book-lined office on a regular basis -- not only as a creative consultant, but as a client! Ralph was kind enough to take me on, and I -- the owner of a business with one employee (me), joined the company of CEOs, VPs, executives, salespeople, and business owners who have improved their businesses and their lives by working with Ralph Bruksos.

In his work with me, Ralph gently began to help me understand the many ways I was, in effect, missing out on the extremely positive opportunities that lay at my feet. Gradually, I became aware of the root causes of why I was feeling so stalled out in my life, relationships and career.

About two years later, Ralph honored me with an invitation to edit his book. It proved to be one of the most valuable experiences of my life. As I worked on the book, I began to apply the lessons contained in Turning Change Into A Payday to my life. I delivered the body, stopped blaming others , wrote down my goals , sought ways to close the loop for myself, stopped getting my story straight, and recovered my empathy for others.

As the book consuls, I saw every day as a choice I could make to do better. I was surprised to learn that life of a man whom I only knew as happy, prosperous, and sucessful had in fact been much harder and more challenging than mine. This was a teacher, I realized, who really understood change because he had mastered it in his own life.

Suddenly, my phone began to ring again with new jobs and wonderful opportunities. New friends appeared. I started moving through the changes I had put off, and felt much better.

Ralph is a modest and humble man. He has never bragged to me about what he's done to help others, but I am certain that I am only one of many he has reached out to and - with his characteristic love, compassion, and wisdom - guided to the path of happiness and prosperity. I think of this book, Turning Change Into A Payday as a natural extension of Ralph's mission to help others. By writing his lessons down, he can spread the word to far more people than he could consult with one-on-one.

You, dear reader, may not have the benefit of such powerful personal interactions with the author of this book. However, you do have the opportunity to buy and read this book, which contains the same lessons, stories and original thinking that Ralph uses as the basis for his consulting that has positively impacted countless numbers of people.

As Ralph would probably say, it's your choice.

I grabbed this book on a recent smutty fiction shopping spree. This was the best of the books I ordered.

The basic plot is that Megan lives a humdrum life until kinky aliens (Khyrians) kidnap her and whisk her away to a planet where everyone is sexually liberated and BDSM is considered not just normal, but honorable. "Two Moons" isn't a bunch of sex scenes strung together, but instead deals with Megan's attraction to the Khyrians along with her fear and confusion. Additionally, we find out about Khyrian society without the author giving us a 2 page info-dump. I really enjoyed the characters and plot, as well as the erotic scenes. I plan to purchase more of her books.

I am anxiously looking forward to the sequel which this book definitely deserves and hope she will be able to maintain the high standard she has set for herself with Worthy of a Master. Kudos to Chelsea Shephard and "look out" to Adrian Hunter!

I bought a few of these Ultimate Guide to Weight Training books, and they definitely helped me train specifically for the different sports that I play. Then about a year later I received an email from amazon that there was a new edition out. These upgraded editions are even better than the originals, with more articles and a lot more sport-specific information. I would definitely recommend this series to anyone who plays a lot of sports or wants to specifically focus on training for one sport in particular.

I am very pleased with my copy of this book. It has everything I was looking for with photos, tips, and detailed programs. It goes into depth about the specific muscles used throughout the swing and used when throwing. Possibly the most important thing I got from this book is improved speed and power in rotating my torso which helps with both swinging and throwing harder. My hips are also more powerful and balance has improved.

I was recommended this book from a friend of mine who is also a soccer nut like myself. I found that this book clearly outlines how the individual player can exponentially increase their level of effectiveness on the pitch. Besides improving my general performance on the field by increasing my level of stamina, strength, and flexibility, I found that this book serves as a very good starting points for players of all abilities and ages.

This book provides advice narrowly tailored towards soccer players. Where other books fail to provide advice about how one can prevent injures and make training fun, this book undoubtedly succeeds!!! Overall, a great buy.

This is an excellent read for adult educators that want a series of practical ideas and ways to enable transformation in adult education. To really get at the heart of transformation and its challenges. I suggest reading Paolo Friere's Pedagogy of the Oppressed and get a sense of the ideas of Liberation Theology and the context for Friere's 'dialogical man' before reading this text. The poltical commentary was hardly touched on in this book and engaging in social transformation without taking a poltical position needs deeper consideration because of the risks involved for the educator.

This newly revised and updated second edition of Understanding And Promoting Transformative Learning: A Guide For Educators by Patricia Cranton (Visiting Professor of Adult Education, The Pennsylvania State University - Harrisburg, and Adjunct Professor, Teachers College, Columbia University) is a scholarly study of the transformative learning theory laid out for teachers of adult students in settings that range from night school to the college campus. Providing a complete mapping of transformative learning and supported with thorough discussion of how adult students are in fact transformative learners, Understanding And Promoting Transformative Learning offers a ready grasp of theoretical developments involved such issues as the role of imagination, spirituality, and the importance of connecting critical information in the midst of various transformations. An important addition to professional and academic library "Education Studies" reference collections, Understanding And Promoting Transformative Learning is very strongly recommended reading, an outstanding presentation of the cognitive learning procedures involved in the processes of transformative learning.

Book Review
The book, Understanding and Promoting Transformative Learning by Patricia Cranton not only provides an in-depth account of transformative learning theory, but also offers the reader the opportunity to reflect on his or her own adult learning experiences. Cranton describes transformative learning as a three-step process, (a) subject-oriented, (b) consumer-oriented, (c) emancipatory. She compares these systems with Habermas and Mezirow who have also developed similar transformative learning theories. For example, Habermas defines transformative learning as, (a) technical, (b) practical, (c) emancipatory knowledge.
Cranton's book is organized into ten chapters separated into two parts. Part one defines the transformative learning process; part two describes how the educator can apply transformative learning in the educational process. The book is prefaced by concerns, needs, purpose, and reader audience. Each chapter is summarized and contains information of the preceding chapters. A detailed reference section concludes the book. The organization of the book was extremely helpful to me, as I was able to build concepts within contextual reading.
Researchers define adult education in different ways. Human characteristics are diverse, and it is not possible to generalize the adult learner. Therefore adult learning is classified within a larger system: positivism and constructivism. The former is subject-oriented; Habermas equates this learning to technical knowledge; Mezirow uses the term instrumental domain. Consumer-oriented learning is within the positivism and constructivism domains and hard to define. Habermas equates consumer-oriented learning to practical knowledge (interactive process of learning and individualized learning) and Mezirow to the communicative domain. Emancipatory learning belongs to the constructivist system as the learner becomes empowered often through a difficult process. Habermas and Mezirow call this level emancipatory as well. Mezirow adds a societal process to this learning domain.
The following chapters describe transformative learning within its theoretical context. Mezirow stands out in his goal to determine the true meaning of emancipatory learning developed through critical self-reflection. He depicts various meaning perspectives (how do adults see the world). As the adult learner gains experiences, he or she creates personal and social meanings and interpretations of information. Mezirow divides the meaning perspectives into epistemic (knowledge), sociolinguistic (social perspective) and the psychological meaning perspective. As educators are planning programs for the adult learner, it is important to keep Mezirow's theory in mind, as he stresses the learner's perspectives and the practitioner's experiences with the learner. Although I have often through my own experiences come to assess knowledge and social perspectives while planning, Mezirow's definition and Cranton's explanation clarify questions I have had in building concepts diverting a teaching environment into a meaningful learner-centered environment.
Cranton suggests various levels of self-reflection and critical thinking. She believes that transformative learning is not one process but a myriad of interwoven processes as diverse as transformative learning itself. The ultimate goal of transformative learning is to achieve learner individuation and empowerment ultimately resulting in critical self-reflection. My self-analysis questions how competent and effective I am and have been as a planner for the last ten years. Although I have attempted to follow different learning levels, I did not always understand that effective learning will lead to empowerment and emancipatory knowledge in the adult learner.
Cranton includes Jung's model of psychological types in her book to assist the educator in understanding the individuation process. Jung describes people as extravert or introvert. He also differentiates between an individual's rationale to judge either through values of thinking (logic) or feeling. Although Cranton states that transformative learning is better suited for the thinking function, the thinking types are not most likely to revise their meaning perspectives (Cranton 119).
The second part of the book goes beyond the process of transformative learning and reflects on the learner and the educator's role within the transformative learning process. Cranton believes the educator has three categories of power over the learner, (a) position, (b) personal, (c) political power. Empowerment is a pre-requisite of critical self-reflection and transformative learning. Empowerment should be the outcome of an educational experience. Cranton believes that for learner empowerment to occur the educator needs to relinquish position power while maintaining personal power. It is critical for the learner to have control over his own learning to reach empowerment or political power through .critical self-reflection. The educator needs to pose thoughtful and critical questions to raise the learner's consciousness and to stimulate higher level discourse. Because of varying learner types, each leaner exhibits an individualistic approach to empowerment.
In conclusion, as the educator plans a program, he or she needs to plan to include different learner's beliefs and assumptions. Learners require continued support as they mature and understand self-reflection. Learner assistance can come from the educator himself or from his or her social environment. The educator must stay a self-reflective learner to maintain the meaning of self-concept. I find this of utmost importance. A stagnant educator will become inflexible and not be able to understand the needs of the learner. According to Cranton professional development leading to personal growth and empowerment must be designed to include not only skills training, but also focus on personal growth and ultimately self-reflection as a life-long learner.
As the educator is planning a program, it is essential to consider various factors. The planner must discern the context of the learning process, consider the values, beliefs and assumptions of the learner, ensure the program will go beyond the skills level to include personal growth for all participants regardless of psychological profile types. The program will ultimately result in critical self-reflection and emancipation. Caffarella, in her twelve-step interactive model, includes many of these factors. This book was valuable as it allowed me to think about different types of learners and learning styles. It complemented Caffarella's text in that it filled in my own gaps to better understand her initial chapters of discerning the context and the assumptions and beliefs.. A program can only be successful if all learners benefit from the program implementation and take away what is important for that learner to achieve empowerment and andragogical values.

Cranton gives us great strategies for developing self-awareness as educators. We can become aware of our assumptions by trouble-shooting our own ideas with a suggested list from Cranton: write critical incidents (episodes in our own lives that created new perspectives), keeping journals, writing life histories, conducting criteria analysis, and engaging in a crisis-decision simulation. Cranton says discussions with colleagues and friends may be enough of an impetus for explicating assumptions. When we question the what, how and whys' we can become reflective practioners. The next step is integrating these assumptions into an informed theory of practice. Personal growth for the practioner and the adult learner is our goal. Cranton uses simple language to tell us what the needs of the adult learner are. Her book defines educators themselves as "transformative learners". Today's ideas of educators as facilitators is not just a trendy idea for Cranton. She gives us great ideas on how to revamp our teaching. We are exposed to the different types of adult learning. Cranton explains subject learning, consumer-oriented learning and emancipatory learning. As a fundamental goal of education, emancipatory learning defines the role of education in society. We see Cranton's name a lot in adult learning materials and she in considered an authority. You won't be disappointed with her matter-of-fact way of presenting information. She does not hoard information, she shares everything available to cover the topics at hand. In this "information age" Cranton is out there "fighting the war".

My 2 1/2-year-old grandson loves this book. He likes the illustrations and the simple wording. He asked me to read it over several times.

I appreciated the message because he is told to wash his hands after he goes potty, after he pets the cat and after he comes in from outdoors--and of course, before eating. I think he liked this book because he could see that the princess had to wash her hands throughout the day just as he does!

I'm a nursing student and bought this to teach handwashing to day care and preschool students. Actually, I bought 3 different books and this was the only one "simple" enough for that age group to appreciate. The others went into viruses versus bacteria and were better for much older groups. I've used it 3 times for teaching groups and each time the children are engrossed in the story while at the same time learn about good hygiene. I especially like that it teaches germs are present even if you can't see them - something hard for little ones to get. Even though it centers around a "Princess" who has to wash her hands, the male children were just as interested in the story.

I'm surprised that no one has reviewed this book yet, since Amazon has sold lots and lots of copies ... my guess is that most teachers (like myself) are simply too busy to stop and write reviews :o)

I received my copy of this great book in the mail today, and my kinderkids are going to love it! It's the story of a little princess who is constantly being told "Wash your hands!" The princess is playing outside in the mud ("The little princess LOVED getting dirty!") and comes inside to eat a piece of cake. Her mother, the Queen, stops her and says "Wash your hands before you eat that." "Why?" asks the little princess. "Because you've been playing outside."

The little princess dutifully washes her hands, then stops to dance with the dog and cat on the way to the kitchen. Next the cook tells her to wash her hands, and of course the little princess asks why. This is repeated several times, with delightful illustrations, to remind the little princess (and all the children who will hear and enjoy this story) that she needs to wash her hands after playing with animals, using her potty, playing outside, and sneezing.

A humorous discussion of "germs and nasties" follows, and the little princess learns that if she doesn't wash her hands, the germs and nasties "can get into your food, and then into your tummy ... and then they make you ill."

Like Tony Ross' other books ("I Want My Potty" and "I Want to Be"), this one will be a big hit with my students while sharing an important message in a way they'll enjoy and remember.

If you are a Westie owner or perspective owner, this book contains valuable information for you. This included information that I've never read before in any book devoted to Westies, such as why their claws grow so fast. I highly recommend it - plus the photos are wonderful.
