Our puppy was a serious resource guarder from day 1. Initially we couldn't get near her when she had anything, but now we easily "trade," even when she has something she loves. This book describes a nonconfrontational protocol for your dog to respect you and see you as the giver of good things, not as a threat.

The book arrived faster than expected and in perfect shape. The information in the book has been just what we needed for the puppy we adopted. She had some of the worst resource guarding ever. In days you could a big improvement. She went from snapping and snarling at everyone over her food to being able to chew on a kong next to my other dog.

Resource guarding, dogs growling or biting when food, toys, specific locations, etc. are approached is an extremely common problem. Jean explains in easy to understand terms how to modify this problem behavior. A must have for any professional trainer or any owner of a dog that resource guards.

I've read many books on parenting and motherhood. By far, the best one I have read. A must read for every mom, especially if you are feeling overwhelmed or insecure about motherhood. Very practical and easy to understand how to pass on these wonderful gifts to your children.

I'm really enjoying this book. It goes a little deeper than most parenting books. I think it's a great book for Christian Mothers.

Excellent, as usual

This book is not only an encouraging and inspirational read, but also a great tool to add the the toolbag of every christian mom whose children are still home. So many parenting books inadvertently make the reader feel immensely guilty about their present parenting skills (or lack thereof), this is NOT one of those books! At the end of each section I felt incredibly uplifted and inspired to take their simple but profound "GIFTS" (Grace, Inspiration, Faith, Training, Service)and begin working in the lives of my children in new ways. I highly recommend this book as well as all of Clay and Sally Clarksons other works.

This book is a must have for moms who are seriously concerned and committed in raising their children. I love her approach to parenting as she helps you understand just why our children were created and the calling God has placed on their lives as well as your own. I had goals and proirities set for our family, and this book was instrumental in teaching me that my desires were, yes, admirable, but God wanted so much more. It taught me so so much.

A beautiful, inspiring book

This is a beautiful book, full of inspiration. If your intention is to follow Jesus in your parenting as in other aspects of your life, but wonder what that would look in the day to day of parenting, that's what this book is all about. An experienced, thoughtful mother, Sally is full of encouragement from a mother who has been there and done that. When we feel, as mothers, that we can't give any more, Sally reminds us of the One who has gone before us and in Whom we find encouragement. She has many ideas for making a family lifestyle that incorporates Christian acts of hospitality, service, charity, prayer, discipleship and more. A lot of Christian parenting books are long on how to control your child and short on how to model a vibrant, meaningful Christian life that involves your children in ways they can understand. That's one of the many strengths of this book.

Alternative medicine works for alcohol abuse

And this book proves it. Finally someone has let the cat out of the bag that alternative medicine has been used for centuries to conquer alcohol craving and alcohol abuse.
I'm happy drinkers have more options with this book. Now, in addition to cutting down or stopping, they can get a little extra help with the herbs and supplements in this book. Every drinker should own this book.

this book sends an important message . . .

Review Date: 2007-08-10
that message is we have to start thinking out of the box when it comes to
alcohol abuse treatment. i gave this book to a friend of mine who has a
drinking problem but was dead against stopping or going to AA. he was
receptive to this book because it gave him some organic alternatives to
drinking less. in other words it got him started doing something about
his drinking.

some people just need a little shove to do something about their drinking
and this book provided that little shove.

Brilliant! Why hasn't anyone written about this before?

I'm a drinker who has struggled on and off with booze for years and I'm ecstatic someone has finally written about a more organic approach to problem drinking. This book gave me a different perspective. I was especially interested in how chinese and ayurvedic medicine treat drinkers and the concept of "balancing" my life so booze becomes less important and I drink less.

This book opened my mind up. I guess no ones written about alternative medicine to address alcohol abuse because the disease concept and AA are so deeply ingrained in the US.

This Book Cuts Alcohol Cravings Without Prescriptions!

I am so happy I came across this book at amazon. It's the only book I've
found that talks about how other alternative medicines and other cultures
view alcohol abuse and how to treat it. I was thinking about getting
prescription medication to cut the desire to drink but after reading this
I don't need to. There are lots of herbs to do that at the natural food
store. I've read Cornett's other book, 7 Weeks to Safe Social Drinking:
How to Effectively Moderate Your Alcohol Intake, and she always covers
interesting things.

For me the vitamin and supplement part was the best. It talks about things
you can buy over the counter to cut craving. The Chinese and Ayurveda
medicine parts were really interesting too.

I realize this is only one take on problem drinking. But if you take these
suggestions in the book, along with her program in her other book to
improve your drinking habits you can cut craving and consumption without
prescription medicine.

Unique Book!

This is one of the most interesting books I've read about alcohol abuse - it really offers a different take on problem drinking and how to fix it. It's the first book I've found which discusses how different alternative medicine approaches have treated alcohol abuse for centuries - long before AA came along.
Homeopathic, Chinese and Ayurvedic and western herbs are covered - explaining how each of these systems views alcohol abuse, how it develops and the best ways to treat it. Another major theme of the book is balance. If one's life is a balance of physical, mental and spiritual components, the less need there is for alcohol. Truly a fascinating read and helpful to me personally.

If it wasn't for someone raving about Erma's books ~~ and her insights, I would have never thought of picking her books up again. I remember very vividly reading her columns in my hometown newspaper every day till I moved to college. She is what I consider to be part of the American scene, Mom, Apple Pie and Erma Bombeck.

This book, which I read in one day over this past weekend, is just as wonderful as her other books. It made me laugh and roll my eyes (I don't have teenagers yet) and cry. The one chapter that made me cry the hardest is the letter from a mom whose son is a criminal. I had studied a little bit of criminals and their families in sociology in college, and that letter hit home. I love the letter from a teenager asking how did moms get their bionic and super powers. I love her insights on traveling and coming home. Let's face it, I just love Erma. She really is a woman who has her finger on the pulse of the nation's heart.

This is a wonderful must-read for all moms and their children. This is a book to read in different stages of your life too. I plan to read it again in several years when my two are tweens and again when they're teenagers. I am sure her insights will still help me grow through rocky patches. This is a timeless book. And one that I plan to share with the new moms in my life.

The title, alone, says it all about this book. As long as there has been creation, there have been mothers. The combination of rich humor and sensitive insight keep you entertained, all the while, shedding new light on the joy and rapture of motherhood.

Bombeck leaves a wonderful legacy behind, with this, one of her most well-loved books. Other Bombeck books I would definitely reccomend include: The Grass is Greener Over the Septic Tank, Just Wait Till You Have Children of Your Own!, When You Begin to Look Like Your Passport It's Time To Go Home, and Family: The Ties That Bind (And Gag).

Erma Bombeck was the best humorist of the domestic American scene. This book, focused on her best subject - mothers, is a gem. Both humorous and wise at the same time, it will give you valuable insights one minute and have you rolling with laughter the next. If you are a mother, planning to become one, or want to gain some insight into your own mother, this is the book for you.

While reading this book, I heard two people quote from it. One was a radio food guru and the other was one of those heart-warming emails that someone I know decided to forward to everybody in their online address book. Read this book and you may find yourself quoting from it someday.

Erma Bombeck is as far as I'm concerned the best writer of this century!! I love ALL her books, but I especially love, MOTHERHOOD: The Second Oldest Profession", the best!

It is in my opinion HER VERY BEST WORK!! And should be considered a classic!!

This book will make you laugh, it will make you cry, it will make you think, and above all else it will make you take a second look at your life...and rejoice in it!

Erma Bombeck's book, "Motherhood: The Second Oldest Profession", is a MUST for all parents, guardians, and care-takers of children to read!!! It is not only heart-warming - it is about life itself.

Erma Bombeck had a very unique and talented knack of getting right to the heart of any matter - and making people see it in a whole new perspecitive...and to see it through the eyes of laughter and love...

Erma Bombeck - IS - the best writer of this century, and all her books [and especially this one] simply ARE the best stories and articles you will ever read! And all her work should be considered as classics...

Francesco has been faithful in answering every email. If your looking to build muscle I believe this product is for you.

By Far, the BEST Bodybuilding Book

I've researched, read, and used a lot of different programs and this one is by far the best. For two reasons: 1-This book addresses ALL bodybuilding variables and tells you exactly what, when, and how. Period. 2-The cyclical nature of the program avoids plateauing by keeping you "above the plateau" line, and below the overtraing line. So if you're in the middle, you're gaining muscle.

This book ALSO addresses fat loss WithOUT losing (and still GAINING) muscle while getting ripped...and it's NOT another Adkins/ketogenic diet!

This is one of the most researched and LOGICAL programs out there. The program is based on the Bulgarian Burst Strength Training system (Big Beyond Belief), but this book meticulously addresses diet, as the BBB book doesn't do it completely.

If you're a natural bodybuilder, this is the book for you.

Though i just purchased this book, i feel that i've found the catalyst of my muscle buliding desire. At first i was skepticalb/c the of how skinny this book was( when purchasing i thought it would be a thick book), but after reading every word in this book I became almost an expert on how to adjust my bodybuliding techniques and eating habits. I learned more from this book than any trainer, bodybuilding encylopedia...etc. This guy doesn't waste your time. He gets right down to the nitty gritty and puts it all out there for you to absorb. He answers all your quesitons to the fullest in the book and when you contact him via e-mail. He provides you with everything you need to succeed in your goals of either shedding fat or building muscle. The eating habits is key and he breaks down everything for you in that section all the way and every idea he throws out he backs it up with logical and credabile facts. Can't wait to see my results:-D

I can honestly state that the MuscleNow book is the only book you will ever need in quest for building a better body. Francesco definetly knows what he is talking about and actually follows everything he says. I have used his system for over seven years and till this day answer every single email I ask of him. Unfortunately I made the mistake of trying different programs and supplements before coming across his website. Although from time to time I would try different program but none of them came close to the results I received from the MuscleNow book. I sometime kick myself for looking for other programs. Dont make this mistake. Take my advice and if you need confirmation of this review email me at Chuckincharge22@hotmail.com.

Francesco Castano is a natural bodybuilder, and when I say natural... this means he only takes into his system REAL food. No supplements, no drugs, and above all... NO BULL SH#$!

I really2 reccommend this book for both... people who want to lose weight... and also people who want to gain serious NATURAL muscle :)

This is a great book. I have lost many pounds using the methods in the book. But I replace his Nautilus routines with my own free weight and other routines. The only quibble I have with the book is that there may be too much sugar in the diet. Darden states that the diet is not for everybody but I believe there is too much sugar for anybody. It doesn't seem to harm anything for the normal individual but it does encourage a sweet tooth.

This method really works

I first did the Nautilus diet about 3 years ago, and lost the first 20 lbs during the 10 week regimen, then 20 more lbs after the regimen ended because I kept up the healthy eating and exercise routine. I kept this weight off for 2.5 years until I moved home for 6 weeks before my wedding! Since then I have probably gained 15 of the lost pounds back, but it is b/c I stopped exercising and eating properly. I have just started the diet again, and know (REALLY KNOW) that in 10 weeks I will look fantastic again. This book gives you a menu for each meal, recipes to follow, and a grocery list. It really couldn't be easier. When you think about it, 10 weeks is only 2 1/2 months. That surely isn't long to wait for a new body and a new lease on life. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book to anyone needing an easy and effective diet.

After reading countless magazine sales pitches couched as articles and opinionated arguments among body builders on the Internet, this book is a welcome, refreshing source of understandable factual information on what to eat, how to eat it, and when to eat it. Simple.

Since it is by and for the U.S. Navy it is not trying to sell you the latest supplement or training video, so you might be left wondering what the catch is--there is no catch.

Large text, many tables of reference information, clearly written in a commonsense way make this indispensable for body builders or athletes, not just military personnel. I can't recommend this manual highly enough.

Simple and Concise Nutritional Information
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-03
I have bought nutritional books in the past and just been swamped with their language and theory. As a incredibly busy graduate student (people with similarly busy lives can relate) I just didn't have time to sit down and battle out the information, let alone in one sitting. Upon getting this book, I cracked it open and already found myself zipping through the worksheets giving myself quick access to important nutritional information. The authors have broken the subject down into easily understandable segments (though this book probably isn't for the more advanced nutritionist). It is important to note that the book is targeted towards Navy SEALs and other military personnel. Consequently it does give information that is important to them and may not be relevant to the average reader (i.e. - information on military rations and mission recovery nutrition). The chapters covered are:
1. Energy Balance = Energy Expenditure - Energy Intake
2. Carbohydrate, Fat and Protein: The Energy-Providing Macronutrients
3. Micronutrients: Vitamins and Minerals
4. Vitamin and Mineral Supplements
5. Fiber and Health
6. Fluid Replacement: Water and Other Beverages
7. Healthy Snacking
8. Restaurants, Fast Foods and Eating Out
9. Nutritional Considerations For Endurance Activities
10. Nutritional Considerations For Strength Training
11. Nutrition for Optimum Mission Performance
12. Nutritional Interventions for Mission Recovery
13. Food for the Field: Military and Other Rations
14. Nutritional Considerations for Adverse Conditions
15. Ergogenic Agents - Looking for "The Edge"
16. Ergolytic Agents - "Going Backwards"
Plus all the appendices and worksheets you could ask for!
I highly recommend this book for someone who just wants to get healthy and wants quick access to the information to do so. I ESPECIALLY recommend this book for military personnel who don't have the time in the field for the insane calculations found in other books, but who find it absolutely vital to stay in shape (their lives may depend on it!). Hopefully that was helpful and good luck in your searches for good health!

Review Date: 1999-08-10
This volume provides clear and concise information on nutrition taylored to the need of the U.S. Navy SEAL operators and is as such equally valuable to all military personel. Although much of the material covered can be found elsewhere, this book cuts to the core and deliveres the information in context of the various missions undertaken by SEAL's and SEAL trainees, garnished with results from research conducted by the U.S. Navy specific to SEAL's and their operational environment.

Written in a workbook format, it provides tables and work-through examples to let you easily determine your own diatery needs. The book also covers the contents and nutritional value of the different military rations (MRE, LRRP etc.) and their usefullness for various missions and climatic conditions. A chapter on healthy eating in (fast food)restaurants and on eating for post-mission recovery adds to it's usefullness outside of field missions.

This is really a one-stop source for the military community. A very easy read and highly recommended!

I have both of Dan Kiedrowski's books, the original and this latest edition. He takes the breed from its origins in Germany to the present day. If you are a breeder, exhibitor or just a schnauzer lover you will be in for a treat. There are photos from the past and the present, so that you can clearly see the changes in the breed. The Miniature Schnauzer is a wonderful breed and this book shows the breed beautifully. If you are interested in a specific breed, schnauzer or other it would be wise to read all you can, and learn all you can so that you will be able to make an informed choice. Dan's book will give you accurate unbiased information regarding schnauzers.

This is the best new book on miniature schnauzers that I've seen. It covers history of the breed and desirable vs not-so desirable physical characteristics, and other interesting information, plus, oodles of pictures of modern champions and their lines. I found almost all of the champions in our schnauzers' pedigrees. The book did contain a clinical report on eye ailments, which was oddly out of sync with the rest of the text (it looked like someone was just trying to get their article published). This chapter should have been completely omitted or else presented as a general discussion of the ailments typical of the breed. Aside from this problem, the book should be a visual delight for any schnauzer lover.

This is the kind of information that people really need to know about a breed. This is the kind of book that is all too hard to find, written by an expert. This is not a book with 10 pages in the front about schnauzers and 200 pages about any kind of dog. This is a real, schnauzer book, completely for the min. Schnauzer lover. Why would anyone put such a good book out of print? What is the matter with these publishers? A book like this is good forever. These basic things never change. Howell book HOuse should be ashamed.

Olive Parrot Shares her Birthday is a real find. It is one of those rare children's books that combines clever humor with a compelling and exciting storyline, allowing an adult to enjoy it as much as any child. It serves to bring out the child in an adult while challenging a developing youngster with its clever puns and twists of fate. The book is also beautifully illustrated and bound with such high quality materials, that it looks and feels as good as any coffee-table glossy. Olive Parrot would make a truly magnificent birthday gift, but it is also a fantastic gift for any occasion. A classic in the making.

I must also be a bird since I just loved reading the book, looking at the illustrations, and laughing at so many references to adult culture. The idea is so clever and so well written that it's fun over and over again, not to mention the brightly colored and detailed pictures. What a fun gift for a birthday at any age.

I recieved this book as a birthday gift from a very good friend that always has great taste in gifts. He hit his peak with this purchase. I enjoy this book every time I pick it up. The story made me feel good and enjoy an adult birthday. The art work is fabulous and comical. If you have a big friend or little friend with a birthday this will be the perfect gift.

Received as a gift from a bird-lover friend, I read this wonderfully funny and witty tale to my small children and my dog Jegs. They love the characters and the whimsy of the tale. They usually laugh at loud (especially Jegs).

Like Bugs Bunny cartoons, it appeals at all levels of development - arrested or not - with sophisticated charm. My wife and I have shared it with our family on multiple occasions and it remains fresh and funny.

We give it maximum stars (Jegs too).

This book has it all. Kids will love the gorgeous illustations, the "happily ever after" tale that is neither trite nor too predictable, and most of all, the lyrical flow of the prose. Grown-ups will enjoy the jokes thrown in just for them and will find a story that wears well with each and every reading. Olive is definitely NOT (just) for the birds!

I would recommend this book to anyone seriously wanting to get an idea of what it takes to become a Navy SEAL. This photo essay chronicles the journey of an actual BUD/s class from start to finish. While I have read other accounts, the pictorial evidence really clarifies some of what happens and why so many would-be SEALs drop out during the process. Only the most determined and mentally tough make it through these lengthy, grueling tests of strength and character. These men have my respect and my admiration.

Bravo to Richard for his hard work and dedication to the SEAL/SOF community. I was an instructor in BUDS during the making of Richards book and couldnt have asked for a more genuinely interested person to be around us. Richard has the unique ability of photographing his subjects in the most intimate situations, all while maintaining unshakeable rapport with instructors and students alike. Richard has given a much needed inside look (without going too far) at what these men go through during training. Hats off to Richard for a first class photo journal. BH

This oversized pictorial book describes the training conducted at BUD/S in pretty good detail. In my opinion the photographer, did a fairly decent job with the capture methods used to entail the rigorous training involved in the six month training program.

First of all, it's HUGE and BOLD! ... not wimpy on presentation. Very interesting narrative you don't normally see in photographer's projects; you can really follow these soldiers through their intriguing training process and their "becoming".

I must admit I am a bit biased. My son was in Buds class 246 which is the subject of the book. It gave me a real life insight into what BUDs is really all about. I had a difficult time finding the book a local books stores and really appreciated the fact that Amazon carried it. Some hard to find dealers wanted as much as $120.00 for a used copy of it.
