Kelly Rich, aka Kelly Kellow before her marriage and divorce, lives in New York and is making a documentary film about people living with disabling conditions. At her side is Josh Cavey, her cameraman and good friend. Their subject? Nellie Worthridge, an enigmatic, and legless, elderly woman. In the middle of the project, after some disturbing film footage displays mysterious findings, Kelly receives a call that her sister has been hurt back home in the small town of Spires.

Kelly leaves for home, filled with trepidation at returning home for the first time since she was released from the Coopersville Female Institute for depressed or disturbed young girls. Josh finds himself in the role of caretaker for Nellie after the old woman suffers a stroke, along with Doctor Carlos Mendes.

The frail threads of unreality link these four people together. While Kelly must remember what she left behind in her past, Carlos must face the uncertain future of his unborn child. Nellie recognizes something in Josh's past, and understands how she herself is tied to Kelly.

'The Fall Of Never' is a very well-written, fantastical, mysterious, and shivering journey into our hearts, our entrenched abilities, and the souls from the past. It's a tale that creeps along the edge of insanity, speaks of vague memories haunting the mind, and travels through woods as dark as the soul of a madman. What haunts you from your past?

I highly recommend this book for lovers of creeping horror or gothic tales. Malfi's prose is flawless, surreal, evocative, and memorable without becoming boring. Definitely worth a buy. Enjoy.

A highly original modern gothic

Aspiring documentarian Kelly Rich comes home late one night to a message from her estranged family: her sister, Becky, was nearly killed in the forest near their house and Kelly must come home at once to her hometown of Spires in upstate New York. This leaves Josh Cavey, her videographer and the closest thing she has to a friend, in a fix when he finds their latest documentary subject, Nellie Worthridge, an elderly paraplegic, barely breathing on the floor of her apartment.

In the hospital, Nellie begins saying and doing very strange things like talking about how "we almost killed that f-----g dog" and breaking all of the tines save one from plastic forks. She really upsets her attending physician, Carlos Mendes, when she mentions that his unborn baby is not going to make it to term. And, at her family home, Kelly feels like she is going crazy. She is having strange "memories" of her years in the asylum her parents put her in at 15 (the same age her sister is now), and this only increases her fear.

How author Ronald Damien Malfi ties Nellie's odd behaviors to Kelly's visit to Spires results in the most effective chiller I've read in years. The Fall of Never gave me the first genuine reading-induced goosebumps I've gotten since my first time through Ray Bradbury's "The October Game," and it is only his second novel.

The Fall of Never faithfully follows the expected route of the American gothic subgenre, yet it doesn't feel derivative, just familiar. Malfi informs his story with references from Shakespeare, Poe, even Puzo (watch out for those bags of oranges), and the cover illustration by Mike Bohatch gets the reader into the proper mood.

Malfi truly knows his characters, so much so that I began to think I did, too. The dialogue is so personal, and each character has such a clear and distinctive voice, that it is easy to tell who is speaking just from their words. His female characters are especially well drawn and are the most integral to the plot, leaving the male characters like Josh and Carlos to simply respond to the actions of the women.

The Fall of Never is about many things, but most of all it is about power: the power of fear and loneliness, of the mind and imagination, and the extreme result that comes from the combination of all four. Given the depth of his plot, I was concerned that any ending Malfi came up with would fail to meet the heights of what preceded it. But he managed to completely surprise me with a stunning conclusion that fits all the pieces together in a fully satisfying way and may even break new ground -- I know I've never read anything like it before. Despite its generic origins, the author does not limit himself and therefore comes up with a novel that feels completely original and definitely makes Ronald Damien Malfi someone to watch out for in the future.

ive been searching for a book such as this for some time. i love a book in which the first page sucks you in and doesnt let go... putting the book down is almost physically painful as your brain is insisting it MUST KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!... a rollercoaster ride of intensely intellectual imagery.... beautifully written so the reader is taken along and becomes a part of the story....

excellent.

I was beginning to think that literary horror no longer existed, suspense and horror written only to old formulas and clichés, then someone directed me to the small presses, and then specifically to Ronald Damien Malfi. Reading Fall of Never made me want to rewrite anything I'd ever written and has sent me on a search of all things Malfi. Malfi's prose is impeccable, his settings evocative and alive-read this and you won't forget the Spires compound, or even the hospitals or restaurants these characters visit;and Malfi's characters are the kind you want to follow, all the way to the end and beyond-even minor characters stand out as layered and authentic. The novel offers an intriguing and unnerving blend of physical and psychological horror with a surprising look into how we might be creators of our own fears. It made me look again at myself which is what good fiction should do.

The amazing thing about this book is that it shouldn't work. It relies way too heavily on the Ann Radcliff standard gothic plot. The more amazing thing is that it does work and it works for one very simple reason - Malfi actually cares about the characters - at least enough to write about them sympathetically. Kelly is multi-layered and not just the girl that ends up in the haunted mansion. Her friends back in New York have their own compelling storylines. Even the minor characters like the town hermit or the comatose sister have their own stories taht make you want to stay with them long after the book is over.

There are some drawbacks. The parents don't ring true. When Malfi finally reveals the secret behind the protagonist's lost memories and her weird family, it feels like a letdown. The last third of the book is an otherwise exciting fight sequence, but I thought that Malfi was delving into some interesting identity issues to which he couldn't really devote much time because this was the big finish.

But as far as first novels go, this is a barnstormer, and I look forward to more novels by this amazingly talented writer.

Karl Shook did a wonderful job with this book and the delivery of the story. I love the way the characters were introduced. The more you got to know them the more you were eager to know what they'd do next. Each chapter grabs you even more than the last leaving you thinking, "Uh oh, it's getting closer to THE DAY". Of course I don't want to reveal anything, but I love the way the family supports each other and work together to accomplish this "FAMILY THING". It's a must-read. I highly recommend this book! :o)

I picked this up at the library last night. I did not have it on my list just noticed it in the new books section. My 8-year-old son loved it and even my 15-year-old daughter looked at it with him some. I think our favorite was the Leech-Eel and we all have been slamming the toilet seats just in case. My son was a little worried about the Corner Cat. I would not recommend this for kids that are prone to nightmares or worry about monsters. I would recommend it for ages 8 and up.

A fantastic guide for would-be monster hunters in your home. Each creature has a 2 page entry detailing it's likely location, what it likes to eat and most importantly, if it's harmful to people and how to protect yourself against it. Quite a few, if not all, also have some reproduction of a 'historical' sighting of the monster. The distressed pages of the book give it the feel of something you might accidentally find tucked away in the attic.

Most of the critters are funny and harmless, but a few might give the younger ones a fright. In particular, the Bedwolf which lurks under your bed...I always wondered what the thing under the bed looked like and now I'm glad I never knew as a kid! This one will literally have them jumping into bed so their ankles don't come within grabbing distance of the Bedwolf' six arms.

Another favorite is the Corner Cat (felis angulosa), a very skinny kitty that stands on it's hind legs and jumps out from corners to bite your ankles. Perhaps realted to the Lovecraftian Hounds of Tindalos?

All in all, this is a terrific collection of original beasties sure to spark the imagination of monster enthusiasts young and old.

This is the only Mindwarp book that I have read so far and I think it's awsome. I'm a huge fan of a series called Animorphs by K.A. Applegate, but I think I'm gunna like this series even better. From this book I can tell that the Alpha children find out alot about themselves, that this has nothing to do with aliens and they find out how they got the powers. A boy Ethan finds his father (who his powers came from geneticaly). From this book it seems like I'm gunna be the biggest fan of this series and I'd recomend this book to any other anifan out there. I would be glad to chat with anyone about these titles.

I agree; The best mindwarp book!

This book was great! Even better than # 6, my was-been favorite. The only thing about this book is it's a to be continued. I hate that. In this book, a lot of info is given. The shape-shifting aliens are called "Omegas." A new species is also involved. They are called "Sweepers." And you know the mindwarp kids who I refer to as "the alien kids?" Well, they also have a name. The Alpha children. Even though I don't mind, I think it was a little unfair that once again, girls are the unimportant part of a series. The girls only had 11 chapters, while the boys had 13. (Boys rule!) Wouldn't you know that we have the unlucky number. . . Toni runs into Elena and Todd while trying to find Ethan. Ethan had been chased after by a Sweeper and escaped, only to be caught by a Topsider. Oh yes! There are no such things as aliens. The Alpha children and their parents were a government project that went right. Too right! The government didn't want them, so they created the Omegas. The Omegas turned against them. Then there was a nuclear war in the year 2094. Everything went wrong. The humans on the surface turned into freaks called Topsiders. Those that stayed underground remained mostly normal. I can't believe Todd and Elena are alive. I wonder what Todd's power is. . . . Elena had a vision, though. She said the others would come back to rescue her and Todd. Ethan meets his father, but that part was sort of sad. He died at the end of the book, while rescuing the kids. There were two new people in this book who were friends: Whistler and Jinx. I don't know what happened to Whistler, but Jinx is in the end of the book and she's going to help them go back to the present time. And as a bonus, the book gave subtle hints that Ashley likes Ethan. I just have 3 questions: When they're in their tube, do Todd and Elena communicate in thought-speech? Why are they worried about the fact that Ethan's dad is dead and the Earth is doomed when that is only a possible future? How come Ethan's dad is said to be about 40 years old while in the future when in the "past" he's also supposed to be old. Shouldn't he have been dead by then? If anyone knows the answers to some of my questions, e-mail me.

This book was great, the best out of all the Mindwarp books so far. Unlike the six books before it, this book didn't focus on just one Mindwarp teenager, it was narrated by all the remaining kids: Ashley, Ethan, Jack, and Toni. Some new players were introduced, and the suspense was killer. It was a great book, but unlike a couple people who have reviewed the Mindwarp books, I'm NOT going to ruin the ending for you. I hate it when people do that, and it would be way more of an adventure to find out for yourself. Chris Archer, if you're reading this, I am a HUGE fan, but I'm not going to stalk you or anything.

Wow. Possibly the most amazing book I've read. Elkins is furious and angry and this oozes from his writing. How then does it not come across as an emotional diatribe??? This was simply great writing and story telling. The events are interesting. The people are interesting. That the book is fact shocked and depressed me. How much have I already heard about the holocaust? I've seen Schindler's List. I've seen footage of the bodies on the History Channel. I'm reasonably well informed. But this book......this book not only seemed to make the known more real and vivid, it told an incredible and dramatic story I never heard before. I loaned my only copy to a friend and he is just as blown away. I think I'll buy another.

I couldn't stop reading

Though horrible and shocking, this book shows how the human spirit cannot be surpressed. In spite of an absolute impossibility of success, a small handfull of men kept the spirit of survival and revenge alive during the darkest period in history. While revenge may seem inappropriate in our concept of ideal society, at that time, no other emotion is conceivable! This book very clearly shows how revenge was a natural outgrowth of the horrors of the holocost.

Very accurate

A comprehensive chronology of Jewish resistence to the Nazis and their collaborators from the late 30's through the war. It also details complicity of the Central and Eastern Europeans with the Nazis, the apathy of the "Allies" during the war, and the shameful behavior of the world after the war with respect to refugees, Nazi criminals and Israel. This book will make you proud if your Jewish and angry if your human (Jewish or otherwise).

A very good book that makes you feel the pain that the Jews have felt. To try a turn this around and say look how horrible the Jews are is totally insane. The Jews should be commended on being able to keep a cool head after so long. Any other ethnic group of people who would have experienced this would have carried out equal horrible attrocities upon their oppressors. To whine and say what was mentioned in the book was cowardly is pothetic.

As I read this book I was astonished at how well written and descriptive the story was. This book pulls you in with an over powering sense of life, honesty, tragedy, and most importantly, a sense of inner self. I only wish I knew Oprah myself!!!! A book this well written and an author so talented should be both a "BEST SELLER" and a "HOUSEHOLD NAME"!!! Please do not hesitate to but this book; in fact, by a copy for everyone you know. Sam MacCauley is just nine years old when he is stolen away from his life of baseball, summer, and parental rules that seem too silly. For four agonizing days, a sadistic stranger tortures him in ways Sam never imagined possible. He is ready to give in to death when he is rescued by the most unlikely of allies.

Back in the arms of his loving family, Sam represses the memories as best he can and struggles to adulthood. By age thirty-five, he has a successful career, a talented wife, and two lovely children who adore him. But Sam remains tormented by nightmares and ghost memories of the kidnapping. He erects high, forbidding walls--some emotional, some physical--around himself and his family. Slowly the relationships he holds so dear begin to crumble under the pressures of the past.

If Sam is to save his family and himself, he must face what happened to him during those four lost days. Harder yet, he must find a way to forgive the violated nine year old who still lurks deep in his heart.

Author Powell Clark never falters in this fascinating, horrifying, and ultimately uplifting novel. Her characters are unique, sympathetic, and nearly impossible to second-guess. Her settings feel as real as the ground under your feet. The plot moves quickly as Sam and his family face one challenge after another. Most important, Forgiving Sam offers an emotional toughness and honesty sadly lacking in many works of fiction today.

I highly recommend Forgiving Sam to anyone looking for a novel of substance and intelligence.

This is the first book that I have actually wanted to write a review on because it was such a good book I just had to tell how much I loved it.
I have to say I bought this book because the cover and title intrigued me, little did I know that it was set in Alabama not far from where I live. I also couldn't believe how much talent the author had, and I had never heard of her before. I got the pleasure of meeting her not too long ago and because of her talent it was like meeting a celebrity to me!
This book has a touchy subject matter, but one that every parent or guardian should read.It is about a boy who is kidnapped and molested over the course of a few days. He finally escapes from his kidnapper, but realizes that he will not soon escape the harsh reality of what happened to him. The author takes us through Sam's life as he struggles day by day with what took place in his childhood and finally comes to terms with the fact that it wasn't his fault.
Don't let the subject matter scare you off, this by no means was a "dark" book. It is so beautifully written that one minute I was crying and the next I was laughing. When it ended I closed the book with a smile and the feeling that I was lucky to have read this story.

Reading James Lileks after a long, hard day (or even in the middle of one) is like a refreshing drink of cool water. He's that good, and that good for you. Witty, self-deprecating, erudite, observant, mordantly intelligent and yet painfully aware of what a blessing it is to be alive...this guy is about as close as any modern columnist or humor writer can be to a modern Robert Benchley. I've been following him in columns, book collections, and website for years, and he never disappoints.

If you get a chance to get your hands on a copy of "Fresh Lies", go ahead and spent the rent and insulin money to get it. You'll be glad you did, and your pancreas can hold out a little while longer.

James Lileks is like a younger Garrison Keeler--and I mean that in a good way. He has the same smart sense of humor and the same midwestern sensibility. Lileks takes on everyday life writing about his fear of his espresso maker, shampoo, rock music, and all sorts of other things in the world around him in a way that is fresh and frequently hilarious. I read this book on the train and people kept staring at me because I was laughing so hard. The chapter entitled "Turn That Racket Down" (about pop music) in particular brought tears to my eyes. Lilieks writes from the point of view of those of us who missed out on being boomers (thank god), but who are to old to be part of Gen X. If it amuses you that the song "Instant Karma" ws used to sell shoes, but you don't understand rap music, you are the right age to enjoy this book

A few deserving authors on the Right have really made their bones in the wake of 9-11.Ê Bernard Lewis went from being well-regarded in the ivory towers to a prominent place on magazine covers as the leading public voice in the West on Islam.Ê Victor Davis Hanson went from being a distinctive but little known military writer to one of the most popular geopolitical columnists in America.Ê Christopher Hitchens was saved from a life of thralldom to the tenets of Marxism as he became a leading, if improbable, defender of Western values.Ê Daniel Pipes became just as much the celebrated scourge of Islam as his dad had been the scourge of the Soviet Union.Ê And, on the comedic front, we all "discovered" James Lileks.

If you've ever looked at a blog, particularly a war blog, you'll have seen--and hopefully followed-- innumerable links to Mr. Lileks's Daily Bleat.Ê But he's no recent phenomenon, as this collection of columns from 1994 shows.Ê Mr. Lileks has been toiling away in the vineyards for many years now, or in his case the pages of the Minneapolis Star Tribune.Ê The older satire here is just as funny and just as politically incorrect as his writing over the past few months has been, including rants about NPR, women's hair dye, the metric system, and the Taster's Choice couple.

Columnists, especially those who write humor columns, have a tough task, called on not only to be consistent but consistently funny.Ê Mr. Lileks is among the very best.

He can write. He can dance. And after 2 cans of beers, he can eructate a heart-rending belchadelic rendition of THE WAY WE WERE. I can't believe I'm living in a world where every goddam Salvation Army store contains 937 copies of VALLEY OF THE DOLLS and not one copy of FRESH LIES. As Kenneth Tynan said, it's enough to make a Manichean of me.

You have a decision to make, Smedley. You can either buy FRESH LIES---or I can program my Orson Welles android to sit on your face. The choice is yours.

Lileks is one of those guys who can put such a unique top-spin on mundane matters that it's transformed into the most clever, hilarious topic imaginable.

Short and snappy, Fresh Lies' essays and stories embody a respectable variety, from the silly to the artfully sincere. Keep it in your bag, for waiting in line or riding the bus, or the patio. Hell, keep it wherever you want- just keep it!

Sixth-grader Nina Tanleven and her friend Chris spend a summer in the Catskills, as Nina's architect dad restores a historic old inn. The two friends - who have experienced ghosts before - soon realize a young Confederate soldier's spirit hovers about the property.

While they are intrigued, simply wondering why a Confederate soldier would be so far up North and why his spirit is unable to rest, someone else - living and deadly - is following the girls, wanting to keep them from finding out the truth.

When she's not out hunting ghosts, 11-year-old Nina is just a regular girl. Abandoned by her mother at a young age, she and her dad are particularly close, and tomboyish Chris proves just the right companion for her adventures...

I love this book! My mother bought it for me years ago and I read it so many times I wore it out! Now, all grown up, I have re-purchased it to read over and over to my kids! An excellent story, well written, and impressive. Not only a great ghost story, scary enough to keep the older ones interested, but not to scary too frighten the little ones, but amazingly it gives you insight into how the underground railroad was run and the desperate measure and danger they met along the way. If you have some kids that are struggling in subjects like history, this is an excellent way to 'sneak' in some knowledge and get those wheels turning! You won't be disappointed with this book!

I would recommend this book THE GHOST WORE GRAY by:Bruce Coville, to any-body who loves books about adventure and the civil war and also alot about how they let slaves live in their homes . The story is about a girl named Nina aka:Nine, and her best friend Chris, Nina's father is a remodeler for old run down places like hotels and inns. Her father takes a job to remodel an old inn. When the three of them get there they discover that the inn that Nina's father is remodeling is haunted. The name of the inn is called the Quackadoddle Inn, when they find out that other living things are there. They conclude that there is a GHOST! The ghost is a man that was in the war and that is how the story is based on. His name is Captain Jonathan Gray. Then Chris and Nina learn about the civil war and why Captain Gray was staying at the Quackadoddle Inn. But then when they find out how and why Captain Gray died the story turns into a real adventure. The adventure seems so real that it feels like you are almost in the whole story as it goes on.I hope I have helped your opinion on reading and seeing what good of a book this is and how good the adventure can get. To tell you how good this book is, if I could give this book a 10 star rateing I would because that is how good I thought this book was. Thank you for taking your time and reading my very long book review.

Reflecting on it, I realize that it was this book that engendered the great interest that I now have in the War Between the States. Years ago, I read this book for the first time, and I still do despite the "reading level" on the back. Honestly, if you ask me, ignore it! Those three letters (or letter and a number) "RL5" mean nothing as far as having a great plot, and good characters.

In this book, Coville demonstrates a power to make you believe (while reading) that anything is possible, that perhaps--maybe--ghosts really can and do exist. He also, by well-written diary entries and some well-choreographed appearances, does an incredible job of letting you catch a glimpse of what Captain Gray is (was?) like without saying much of anything at all besides a well-timed Rebel Yell. (Those of you who have read this book know what I mean by this.)

Nina, Chris, and Captain Gray all seem to come alive in this book (I use the term "alive" loosely!). I have to say that it is the best of the three Nina Tanleven books. All three are good, but this one shines very clearly above the rest.

The first 3 books in the series were by far the best (the betrayal the secret and the burning) then the next 1- 10 were great........but after that it just kinda goes downhill, like off the original subject... but the book itself was good

Genuinely frightening!

This was definitley my favorite Fear Street Sagas book. Margarete Fier was a really great character, and her power was pretty cool, too. The flashbacks were interesting as well, since you were able to figure it the back story, which is sometimes kinda unclear in these books. I was dissapointed that this was the end of the series and that #17 never came out, but at least it ended well.

Book 2 of the Nikki and Michael series. Books may be a little hard to find, I had to order all 4 through borders. In this one Nikki and Michael meet again while on another case, but this time there's even more tension while Nikki admits to herself she feels something for Michael, there's the fact that his vamp creator is in the same hotel. Great sequel and it is best to read all these in orders, they don't work well as stand alone.

For those who have not yet had the joy of reading a Keri Arthur novel, all I can say is that you are truly missing out. Although her first book only came out just over a year ago, she is already an award-winning author and she deserves every kudos that goes her way. HEARTS IN DARKNESS is the second book in the Nikki and Michael series. Although it can be read as a stand alone, for the best reading enjoyment, I truly think that DANCING WITH THE DEVIL should be read first.

In HEARTS IN DARKNESS, Michael and Nikki have been apart for six months. Michael believes that the only way he can overcome his bloodlust is by staying away from the one woman who brings it out in him. But when he learns from the leader of the Circle that Nikki's death is imminent unless he goes to her, he of course can't stay away.

Nikki is overjoyed to have Michael in her life again, for she knows that she will never love anyone else but Michael. She just has to convince Michael that they are better together than apart. The case they are working on has them posing as newlyweds to find out who is kidnapping wealthy men from a resort. Dark magic and a woman from Michael's past are involved in the disappearances. Nikki also has to deal with the dangers of new psychic powers emerging-when she doesn't understand how or where they are coming from. They are in for the fight of their lives.

Nikki and Michael's continuing love story is fantastic. Paranormal romance lovers shouldn't hesitate to purchase this new series. I can't wait to read CHASING THE SHADOWS, the third book in the series, which should be out later this year. Keri Arthur's books are true keepers!

Michael has been gone for six months now, Nikki has all but given up on him and is deep in another case. While following a teenager, she is attacked by several vampires, who kidnap the teen. Just as she is about to follow to Wyoming, Michael reappears, having been assigned a related case by the Circle. Apparently a number of rich men have disappeared from an exclusive resort there and when they return, they stay out of the sun and only come out at night, but aren't obviously vampires. There is something odd about them that the Circle needs clarified and eliminated.

I enjoyed this addition to the series. Michael and Nikki are very appealing characters. The villians are evil enough, and there are several twists in vampire lore to be found. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
