Gilda may not be very good at staying out of trouble, but with her quirky and lovable personality she is an expert at getting into the readers' hearts.

I thoroughy enjoyed the first Gilda Joyce book, so I was pleased to have the opportunity to read another one. I wasn't disappointed.

Jennifer Allison has successfully built a story with the perfect amount of complexity. It has just enough surprises to keep you guessing, but not enough to cause frustration.

Loved it!

Personally, I am not much of a book reader, but I know the Flick Family and are good friends with them. When Lisa said she was writing a book I knew I had to purchase it and see what it was like. She is a wonderful person and the book truly displays her work.

The book took me to places I didn't think I could take my imagination. It is a great mystery book but also makes you want to keep reading it until you are finished. Great job with the book Lisa and I know you are working on the second one and I can't wait to get my hands on it.

A friend gave me this book to read, and it took me about a month to actually find time to open it up. Once it was opened I had a real hard time putting it down. I read it in two nights, staying up til the weee hours of the morning both nights just because it was absolutely fascinating. It has a great plot and the whole story keeps you on the edge of your seat. I am buying my own copy of this book to have. Great book L.A. Flick!

I loved your book. I got it as a present personally signed by Ms. Flick. I read the book in less than two days. I could not keep my hands off of it or my mind from thinking about it. Once you start reading it, it is easy to follow. It kept me at the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next. As a native from the area the story of Katie's Church always caught my attention. Though I understand that this book is a work of fiction it made it so much more interesting being able to have a correct mental picture of the place. This was a wonderful book, well written for teenagers and young adults looking for an exciting adventure. Keep up the good work and I hope to see more books from you in the future!

"Katie's Church" by LA Flick was a very intriguing book. I couldn't put it down. It was very fast moving and kept you intrigued by going from 100 years into the past then back again to the present. It was like 2 stories at once which all came togther in the end. LA Flick gives you a clear picture of the characters and the surroundings they live in I felt as though I was there. I will be looking forward to the author's next book.

Currently living in Canada, Ms. Hovey chose to set this novel in Evansdale, a small town in Maine and home to psychologist Ellen Morgan Harris. Counseling others on problems she knows all too well, Ellen battles her own childhood demons and a predisposition to alcoholism. These, she can handle. It is grief, often underestimated as a prime motivation, which brings her to the attention of both law and outlaw. First, the premature death of her husband knocks her off balance. Then the contemptuously brutal murder of her beloved little sister, her last bit of home and hearth, drives her into a hard-edged and relentless pursuit of her sister's killer. She and the killer seem to have little choice as they follow their respective fates: the prey turns predator and the predator can't stop, even when self-interest would dictate otherwise. Hovey's realistic and understated prose carries the reader along faster and faster to a conclusion that both relieves and saddens...so many lives and so many scars. Hovey's characters are so believable that the reader closes the book after the last chapter as though returning from a visit to Evansdale. Readers who find a restrained description of terrifying events all the more chilling may see Nowhere to Hide as more thriller than mystery. In any case, we have reason to exult over Ellen's triumph and mourn her losses, in equal measure.

Joan Hall Hovey is a mistress at description and in bringing characters alive. The reader always has a feeling of place as well as being inside each person's mind. Ms Hovey even teases the reader with the first name of the killer, but this reviewer can guarantee that the reader will know the chilling things that go through the killer's head and still not know the true identity.

This is a chiller of a book, and falls in the `I don't want to put it down' category. Unless the reader has very strong nerves, this is NOT recommended as a bedtime story.

This book is right up there with the greats, in my opinion. While I think the author could have started off with more action, then perhaps after hooking the reader, gone back to the beginning, it still nonetheless is an excellent read. Once it heated up, I couldn't put it down. It was enthralling, captivating, and I was anxiously anticipating the ending. Ms. Hovey did such a remarkable job with the keeping the reader in suspense and caring about the lead character's fate. I recommend this story without hesitation. Ms. Hovey has a refreshing writing style, which I found to be clear and to the point, and as I stated previously, an absolutely marvelous ability to keep the suspense turned up high.

Synopsis: The story takes the reader into the world of orphanage girls and the depraved persons who either prey on them or allow others to. In this story, two sisters who survive life as orphans, grow up to become professionals. The oldest, a psychologist; the younger, a singer. Unbeknownst to them, the younger sister is being trailed by a sick person from their past. When she is murdered, the older sister, Ellen, finds solace in her best friend, who also happens to have spent some time in the same orphanage. As Ellen's life begins to spin out of control, she takes up the habit which killed her parents: drinking. Her best friend, Myra, who also doubles as her patient, on occasion, has been having weird dreams of which Ellen has been trying to help her figure out for the last year or so. However, after finding out about Ellen's sister's murder, the dreams come back with a rage. Myra is concerned about them, and even asks Ellen what they could mean, but Ellen is too caught up in her own nightmare to really concentrate and focus on their meaning. After Ellen challenges the murderer to come after her a police officer is assigned to protect her. She develops a great rapport with the officer, and when things seem to be less intimidating and the killer makes no further move to contact her, she convinces the officer of her safety and need for solitude. As if right on cue, all hell breaks lose and the reader is panting to keep up with the events in the story. Ms Hovey does an excellent job of fanning the flames of suspense and thrill, page after page until the very last word.

Joan Hall Hovey's Nowhere to Hide, is a fast moving suspense thriller, that will keep you up all night to finish it. Ellen Morgan, who is still recovering from the untimely death of her husband, is shattered when her younger sister is brutally murdered. Her pain soon turns to rage when she realizes that this man has killed before and will probably kill again and that the police seem unable to catch him. When the evening news wants to interview her about her work as a psychologist, she uses the opportunity to challenge the killer and sets into motion a series of events that will leave you turning all the lights on and locking your doors as you breathlessly await the outcome. Ellen and her sister grew up in an abusive home with alcoholic parents that ended with her sister living for a time in a local orphanage. Ellen senses that the answers she seeks my lie in the old orphanage but before she can really begin to look into her theory, the killer strikes again. As Ellen races to discover the identity of the killer, she finds that in order to live, she has to confront a past she has tried very hard to put behind her. Hovey has created a disturbing look into the mind of a serial killer that will send chills up your spine.

Yes, word of mouth is a good way to spread the word. I did a search here in Amazon of vampire books with good reviews, and this series was one of the first.
The bookstore I usually go to didn't have it, so I had them order it for me. They said it usually takes 2 weeks, so it was ok with me. 3 weeks passed when I went back & found it was never sent! Ugh! They did it again, but I was already planning to get it here. I say it's been already a little over 2 weeks since then & I haven't gotten a call that it has arrived!
No biggie! I ordered it here & I'm half way through & lovin' it!
If you are looking for vampire sex, so far there isn't any, but I haven't finished it, yet. But the story is great! And I read Hawkins is writing the third book. There's even comics!
So I put my 2 cents in! And recommend you get it here, since some major bookstores may not have it.

The novel is definitely a must-read for anyone who enjoys vampire tales. Blood Legacy is a completely different spin on the mythos, one that delves into the science behind immortality. While I have no way of scientifically proving or disproving her explanations for these creatures, I really enjoyed reading about them! It was a very fun book, completely action packed with great heroes and villains! I have already read the sequel and loved it and am eagerly waiting for more novels in this series!

Though the characters here are strong and their conflicts interesting, the book as a whole could have used an editor's strong hand - both for the smaller proofreading errors (streptococcus is described as a virus, and a character is shown knitting a quilt), and for the larger, clumsy moments (like switching the point of view between paragraphs, or providing exposition to the reader by having characters simply state what they know "for the record").

But by far the greatest error here was telling us "The Story of Ryan" without having Ryan as our main point of view character. The whole affair is told via a framing story about a doctor, whose concerns and subplots conveniently vanish once Ryan's storytelling gets into full swing.

This story has a lot of promise, filled with dramatic flourishes that would be perfectly at home in a cinematic medium. It's an easy, entertaining read - and one that I quite enjoyed - with good plot twists towards the end. Just be prepared to forgive a few foibles.

This is the first vampire novel I have read, and have to say that I would read another written by David Lewisl. His style of writing is extremely descriptive allowing the reader to immediately become involved in the story. I must say that I would not expect to see such an intense demonstration of love in a vampire novel...but it is demonstrated in this one! It is an extremely captivating read!

A great read!

I found Bloodtrail a fascinating twist on the vampire story. In it, vampirism is caused by a virus that usually kills, only some of its victims rise from the dead and then go on to thrive on human blood. The condition gives them amazing abilities, but the need for human blood is an addiction.

One of those who 'survives' the virus is Joseph Casey, in prison after killing four people while trying to locate his 14-year-old daughter whom he hasn't seen in 150 years. When the opportunity presents itself, he agrees to be tested by medical researchers who are interested in his healing abilities. In exchange, they'll help him locate his daughter.

The book starts with a flash of raw language and shocking violence. It keeps you guessing as to what's going to happen. It's very evocative of midwestern places, people and landscapes. The dialogue keeps it moving at a snappy pace and makes it almost impossible to put down.

My one caveat is that this is not a book for the prudish or for children. The language is often vulgar, and there are lots of sexual situations, as well as fairly gruesome violence. That said, it's a great read and I highly recommend it.

This is a must read!

I don't like vampire stories, but a friend pushed until I read this one. I'm glad I got pushed. David Lewis is an accomplished storyteller; that's for sure. But, he leaves nothing to chance. Love, violence, honor, deceit, courage, fear, and hope mixed with scientific evidence, believable characters, and twists and turns in the plot keep the reader on a suspenseful journey not only into the world of atypical vampires but also into the realm of human nature. I want a sequel!

WOW! Vampires may not be just fantasy. This book is classified as "fiction" but more accurately could be called possible "future reality". Not only is this book a GREAT story, but it also contains cutting edge science. I recognized traces of Dr. Candace Pert & Dr. Paul Pearson just to name a couple. This book takes place mainly in the present and shows how vampires could come to be. Bloodtrail grabs you from page one and moves you at light-speed, non-stop all the way to the last page. I didn't want it to end... and it does allude to a sequel.

Wow! I've been waiting for years for the Warren magazine archives, Creepy and Eerie. I wonder, though if Dark Horse is going all the way and reprint the whole series. After issue 17, Creepy became really bad for a couple of years until about issue 30, when "new talent" like Richard Corben, Bill DuBay and Bruce Jones came around and the magazine went on to become the best horror mag of all times (sorry EC buffs, but the Warren magazines from the 70's were tops). Let's not forget the Spanish invasion later on, with the top spanish artists contributing to the magazine.

I wonder also if other Warren magazines will ever get their archives (Blazing Combat is being done by Fantagraphics), but what about my fave sci-fi mag, 1984 (later on, due to copyright issues, 1994) and stuff like The Rook and so on.

The main problem I see with these archives (which are beautifully reproduced, they are even better than the original issues printed on pulp paper), is that, as I said before, some time down the line (when most of the good artists and Archie Goodwin quit) they were really terrible (lots of amateur art and even spelling mistakes in the sophomore texts). Should they also be reprinted to continue the whole run of the magazines, even if the artistic quality was below average? Uhmm, dunno... Let's wait and see what Dark Horse has in mind.

Anyway, now I can finally put away all my old copies of the magazine and read the stories once again in pristine condition.

Kudos to everyone involved in this project!

I vividly remember the first Creepy magazine I bought at the the ripe age of 12. Having graduated from adolecent comics like Donald Duck and Bugs Bunny, Creepy was the first "adult" comic I had ever seen. I collected them for several years, but always regretted having missed the #1 issue - my collection started at #2.

As time passed, and Creepy, Eerie, and Vampirella went extinct, I left my childhood behind and my mother eventually threw my collection away. But I've never forgotten the thrill of curling up in a blanket on a rainy, thunderstorming afternoon, or on a spooky October evening, or even on a lazy summer day, with the latest Creepy magazine to scare the jeepers out of me.

And now, I'm reliving my youth all over again. The days of The Munsters, The Addams Family, and Creepy comics are all back. The book is absolutely perfect in reproduction. And surprisingly, the stories are just as hauntingly "creepy" as I remember them.

Kudos to you Dark Horse! I can hardly wait for the next edition! And the next, and the next... As Tonto would say, "You print-em, Me buy-em"

p.s. The companion book "The Mammoth Book of Best Horror Comics" is a excellent deal as well. I'd never read any of the original publications, but the stories and artwork are brilliant.

Artistically the varied styles are a treasure... no "house style" here. The packaging is excellent as well, the reproduction quality matches the talent. This really makes you look forward to the future volumes (as well as the EERIE collections) Darkhorse has a real winner here. Wow, the price is right for this compilation. There is some beautiful work here by Al Williamson, Gray Morrow, Joe Orlando, Frank Frazetta, Reed Crandall, Alex Toth. Frazetta does the bulk of the covers which are reproduced in color but everything else is in varying shades of black and white. There are a few clunkers with the stories but the art is really the main reason to buy these anyway. beautiful artwork with twist endings and bad puns. The first five issues of Creepy reproduced at the original magazine size. Don't sit on the fence, BUY IT!!

Tom Ward has now been an apprentice to The Spook for 6 months. He is learning the tricks of the trade and how to fight off all types of creatures from the dark. He is also learning how lonely the job can be as people are inherently wary of The Spook. But The Spook, taken ill, must send Tom off on his first mission alone. And this mission is to bind a boggart and at the same time try too save the boggart's victim - none other than The Spook's own brother. Tom quickly proves that he is a quick and good learner, but unfortunately the brother dies anyway. This leads The Spook and Tom to Priestown for the funeral as welll as to do battle with the scariest and strongest element of evil that Tom has yet faced. Tom must put everything he knows to use, summons all of his courage, and yet that still may not be enough.

Book Two in The Last Apprentice series is another fun and spooky page turner. It is entertaining to see how the story line progresses and how Tom has evolved. At times the writing is clumsy and there are places where the plot drags a bit, but overall it is another good installment in a fun series between good and evil.

I am trying to think of something to compare it to, but this is in a class all by itself. That it's in my favorite genre, fantasy, which helps. But it's more than just that. Both my sister and I are fans. We're trying to hurry up so we can read the latest one, THE LAST APPRENTICE: WRATH OF THE BLOODEYE. It's going to be on shelves at the end of this month.

Great book fun and exciting

This book was great, started off exciting with Tom, the spooks apprentice binding his first boggart. From there the story leads to The master and apprentice going to preistown to take care of the Bane, an ancient dark creature that lives in the catacombs under the city. Overall great book.

A good and satisfying scary tale!

A mix of medieval fantasy and good old-fashioned horror, this second book in The Last Apprentice series will definitely take its place in your grey matter [and your bones] for a long time. Young Tom Ward is the Spook's apprentice. The Spook, whose brother is a priest, rids the county of dark forces on a less spiritual level. Although people throughout the county are indebted to the work of the Spook, who neutralizes dangerous witches, boggarts and ghosts, he is treated with fear and apprehension. A major antagonist is the Quisitor, who makes it his mission to eliminate those who practice what he deems 'the dark arts'. And yet, there is an even more deadly foe, the Bane, a shape-shifting demon that controls minds, and must be eliminated before the dire prophecy regarding the Bane rings true. The story is told by Tom, accommodated by intriguing illustrations and addendums. This is edge-of-your-seat scary, and I can't wait to read it again!

I'm not usually one for audio books but I had to do a 64 hour drive from California and back in a 4 days period. Having read the first Apprentice book I was very interested in this one.
Let me tell you, it scared the heebies out of me. :) It was exciting and terror-filled. Many times I had to turn it off because I was driving in middle of nowhere Texas.

All in all, 2 thumbs up for scaring a 22 year old college student.

IF YOU DON'T KNOW BETRAYAL OF A HUSTLER IS FIRST READ THEN COMES THE SEQUEL. I LIKED THE SEQUEL WAY BETTER NOT TO SAY THAT THE 1ST ONE WASN'T GOOD. IT ANSWERED THE QUESTIONS I ASKED IN MY REVIEW WITH BETRAYAL OF A HUSTLER. I SWEAR THAT LISA IS DUMB AND I CANNOT UNDERSTAND HOW SHE GETS ALL THE GOOD MEN WITH HER WAYZ. THERE IS GOING TO BE A 3RD PART TO THIS TRILOGY AND I CANNOT WAIT BECAUSE SO MUCH HAS HAPPENED IN THIS ONE WORDS CANNOT DESCRIBE. YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK IF U THOUGHT NOT TOO IT IS A MUST. GO COP THIS ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chino Wells makes a grand re-entrance in A Dead Man's Vengeance to renew the love triangle that transcends into a full blown circle.

At the end of Betrayal of a Hustler, Chino is shot and left for dead. But his right hand man, Knees, wasn't haven' it, and Chino was nursed back to health and sent to recuperate in Virginia with his fam. Chino is back to reclaim his true love, Lisa, and his territory.

Since Chino's death, Lisa has tried to move on with her life with husband/doctor Chris and son Jordan. Lisa and Chris' lives are turned upside down when Chino returns and wreaks havoc on both their lives.

In the meantime, Jamaican drug lord Shark has joined forces with assassin Abu and his crew of killers. Shark and daughter Shantel have tried to get on with their lives after Shantel's mother, Shelly, was gunned down by Chino.

A Dead Man's Vengeance is a very suspenseful work of fiction that had me even more intrigued than it's predecessor. I look forward to the release of The Vendetta.

While I enjoyed learning about Sofe and her struggle to survive, I didn't think the author did a great job detailing there were some big questions from the story that were not answered fully. Once out of the concentration camp, the book seemed to drag for me and the writing that was riveting started lacking. This is an amazing story and too horrible to believe that it did happen. I just pray it never does again. I doubt many today would survive as she did. Great learning lesson or for any teacher, none of us should ever forget. This is a wonderful story of a very courageous and strong woman.

A brilliantly told, inspirational story of exceptional self-sacrifice!!!

Far Above Rubies, by Cynthia Polansky,(ISBN978-0-9773893-3-7)is a brilliant literary historical fiction narrative. Polansky has given tribute to Sofie Mecklenberg Rijnfeld Davidson, a selfless woman of incredible strength. The novel is based on the women known by her niece as Tante Soof. Sofie was a Polish Jew who married a man with six wonderful girls. Although not their biological children, she became their mother and loved them as if she had given birth to them. So much so that when her six girls were summoned to report for resettlement, Sofie decided she could not let them go alone. Sophie made a mother's sacrifice to her six stepdaughters, selfish and with love. She willingly accepted deportation and yet had to persuade the SS to take her. The horrors of Auschwitz told through the eyes of Sophie are real. This unflinching women who faced up to the SS, survived the atrocities of this death camp even though at times she jeopardized her own life to help her daughters and other prisoners. Tante Soof lived life with dignity and an ability to inspire hope in hundreds who would not live another day. You will feel an inspirational uplift unmatched when you read this moving memoir who Polansky quotes from Proverbs, "A woman of valor who can find? For her price is far above rubies." You will be compelled to devour this book in one sitting, so plan ahead.

I purchased this book from you (Cynthia) at Carroll Community College and I am so glad I did. I don't know where it is at the moment because I am Jewish and it is being passed around my family right now!!! What a beautiful, inspiring story. I read it in I think 2-3 hours. I couldn't put it down. How amazing was this woman. I thank you for writing something that I could read and really feel. This is something my children will read when they are older...

5.0 out of 5 stars Far Above Rubies, May 12, 2008

Just finished 'Far Above Rubies'. Oh my! What an incredible (as in not untrue but amazing) tale and what a wonderful way to bring history alive. Beautifully and tactfully and impressively written. Thank you so much for writing Sofie's story. This book should be in every library and every school all over the world. Can we learn from history? One would hope. But it appears not. This book might be just the tonic to make a difference.

The novel Far Above Rubies is more than amazing because it's based on a true story that transcends expectations. Straight forwardly written by Cynthia Polansky, the character of Tante Soof comes alive because of the simplicity of the narrative. This courageous Dutch woman who chose to accompany her six step-daughters to Auschwitz will haunt you in an uplifting way. It's the little moments that surprise and keep you reading. When Mirjam, one of the daughters, writes: "I believe in the sun even when it is not shining,/I believe in love even when not feeling it,/I believe in God even when God is silent." God may be silent but Sofie Rijnfeld isn't. She speaks to our hearts. That has to be God. Thank you forever for writing this horrifically uplifting story about the human spirit. Rosalind Lacy MacLennan, a theater reviewer, mother and author as well.
