The book took me to places I didn't think I could take my imagination. It is a great mystery book but also makes you want to keep reading it until you are finished. Great job with the book Lisa and I know you are working on the second one and I can't wait to get my hands on it.

"...a chiller of a book..."Review Date: 2000-10-30
Joan Hall Hovey is a mistress at description and in bringing characters alive. The reader always has a feeling of place as well as being inside each person's mind. Ms Hovey even teases the reader with the first name of the killer, but this reviewer can guarantee that the reader will know the chilling things that go through the killer's head and still not know the true identity.
This is a chiller of a book, and falls in the `I don't want to put it down' category. Unless the reader has very strong nerves, this is NOT recommended as a bedtime story.

Don't Turn Off All The Lights When You Go To BedReview Date: 2002-01-22
Synopsis: The story takes the reader into the world of orphanage girls and the depraved persons who either prey on them or allow others to. In this story, two sisters who survive life as orphans, grow up to become professionals. The oldest, a psychologist; the younger, a singer. Unbeknownst to them, the younger sister is being trailed by a sick person from their past. When she is murdered, the older sister, Ellen, finds solace in her best friend, who also happens to have spent some time in the same orphanage. As Ellen's life begins to spin out of control, she takes up the habit which killed her parents: drinking. Her best friend, Myra, who also doubles as her patient, on occasion, has been having weird dreams of which Ellen has been trying to help her figure out for the last year or so. However, after finding out about Ellen's sister's murder, the dreams come back with a rage. Myra is concerned about them, and even asks Ellen what they could mean, but Ellen is too caught up in her own nightmare to really concentrate and focus on their meaning. After Ellen challenges the murderer to come after her a police officer is assigned to protect her. She develops a great rapport with the officer, and when things seem to be less intimidating and the killer makes no further move to contact her, she convinces the officer of her safety and need for solitude. As if right on cue, all hell breaks lose and the reader is panting to keep up with the events in the story. Ms Hovey does an excellent job of fanning the flames of suspense and thrill, page after page until the very last word.

The bookstore I usually go to didn't have it, so I had them order it for me. They said it usually takes 2 weeks, so it was ok with me. 3 weeks passed when I went back & found it was never sent! Ugh! They did it again, but I was already planning to get it here. I say it's been already a little over 2 weeks since then & I haven't gotten a call that it has arrived!
No biggie! I ordered it here & I'm half way through & lovin' it!
If you are looking for vampire sex, so far there isn't any, but I haven't finished it, yet. But the story is great! And I read Hawkins is writing the third book. There's even comics!
So I put my 2 cents in! And recommend you get it here, since some major bookstores may not have it.

A great read, but not without problems...Review Date: 2007-04-09
But by far the greatest error here was telling us "The Story of Ryan" without having Ryan as our main point of view character. The whole affair is told via a framing story about a doctor, whose concerns and subplots conveniently vanish once Ryan's storytelling gets into full swing.
This story has a lot of promise, filled with dramatic flourishes that would be perfectly at home in a cinematic medium. It's an easy, entertaining read - and one that I quite enjoyed - with good plot twists towards the end. Just be prepared to forgive a few foibles.

A great read!Review Date: 2005-12-04
One of those who 'survives' the virus is Joseph Casey, in prison after killing four people while trying to locate his 14-year-old daughter whom he hasn't seen in 150 years. When the opportunity presents itself, he agrees to be tested by medical researchers who are interested in his healing abilities. In exchange, they'll help him locate his daughter.
The book starts with a flash of raw language and shocking violence. It keeps you guessing as to what's going to happen. It's very evocative of midwestern places, people and landscapes. The dialogue keeps it moving at a snappy pace and makes it almost impossible to put down.
My one caveat is that this is not a book for the prudish or for children. The language is often vulgar, and there are lots of sexual situations, as well as fairly gruesome violence. That said, it's a great read and I highly recommend it.

At long last, the Creepy archivesReview Date: 2008-09-19
I wonder also if other Warren magazines will ever get their archives (Blazing Combat is being done by Fantagraphics), but what about my fave sci-fi mag, 1984 (later on, due to copyright issues, 1994) and stuff like The Rook and so on.
The main problem I see with these archives (which are beautifully reproduced, they are even better than the original issues printed on pulp paper), is that, as I said before, some time down the line (when most of the good artists and Archie Goodwin quit) they were really terrible (lots of amateur art and even spelling mistakes in the sophomore texts). Should they also be reprinted to continue the whole run of the magazines, even if the artistic quality was below average? Uhmm, dunno... Let's wait and see what Dark Horse has in mind.
Anyway, now I can finally put away all my old copies of the magazine and read the stories once again in pristine condition.
Kudos to everyone involved in this project!

Wow!Review Date: 2008-09-10
As time passed, and Creepy, Eerie, and Vampirella went extinct, I left my childhood behind and my mother eventually threw my collection away. But I've never forgotten the thrill of curling up in a blanket on a rainy, thunderstorming afternoon, or on a spooky October evening, or even on a lazy summer day, with the latest Creepy magazine to scare the jeepers out of me.
And now, I'm reliving my youth all over again. The days of The Munsters, The Addams Family, and Creepy comics are all back. The book is absolutely perfect in reproduction. And surprisingly, the stories are just as hauntingly "creepy" as I remember them.
Kudos to you Dark Horse! I can hardly wait for the next edition! And the next, and the next... As Tonto would say, "You print-em, Me buy-em"
p.s. The companion book "The Mammoth Book of Best Horror Comics" is a excellent deal as well. I'd never read any of the original publications, but the stories and artwork are brilliant.

Book Two in The Last Apprentice series is another fun and spooky page turner. It is entertaining to see how the story line progresses and how Tom has evolved. At times the writing is clumsy and there are places where the plot drags a bit, but overall it is another good installment in a fun series between good and evil.

Vengeance for a Hustle...Review Date: 2007-10-10
At the end of Betrayal of a Hustler, Chino is shot and left for dead. But his right hand man, Knees, wasn't haven' it, and Chino was nursed back to health and sent to recuperate in Virginia with his fam. Chino is back to reclaim his true love, Lisa, and his territory.
Since Chino's death, Lisa has tried to move on with her life with husband/doctor Chris and son Jordan. Lisa and Chris' lives are turned upside down when Chino returns and wreaks havoc on both their lives.
In the meantime, Jamaican drug lord Shark has joined forces with assassin Abu and his crew of killers. Shark and daughter Shantel have tried to get on with their lives after Shantel's mother, Shelly, was gunned down by Chino.
A Dead Man's Vengeance is a very suspenseful work of fiction that had me even more intrigued than it's predecessor. I look forward to the release of The Vendetta.

5.0 out of 5 stars Far Above Rubies, May 12, 2008
Just finished 'Far Above Rubies'. Oh my! What an incredible (as in not untrue but amazing) tale and what a wonderful way to bring history alive. Beautifully and tactfully and impressively written. Thank you so much for writing Sofie's story. This book should be in every library and every school all over the world. Can we learn from history? One would hope. But it appears not. This book might be just the tonic to make a difference.

I thoroughy enjoyed the first Gilda Joyce book, so I was pleased to have the opportunity to read another one. I wasn't disappointed.
Jennifer Allison has successfully built a story with the perfect amount of complexity. It has just enough surprises to keep you guessing, but not enough to cause frustration.
Loved it!
