In the eternal scheme of things, nothing really matters... And you can read about all that nothingness in glowing, superbly organized detail in this book.

The Our Gang Kids once studied for a test by reading Captain Billy's Whiz Bang.

You, however, as a modern marvel of intelligence and sophistication, have Uncle John.

Buy this book. (Heck, buy ALL his books.) If there's a real Uncle John, I'm sure he'll be quite grateful. Captain Billy, on the other hand, is probably already dead and doesn't care what you buy.

I hate to appear cold and unfeeling, but that's the essence of the thing. And, if there really is an Uncle John, he will know if you click off this page and buy some lousy movie, instead.

Yep, all in all, I'd say you'd better buy this book.

So... It's agreed? You'll buy it?

We're billing your account right now.

Thank you, on behalf of Uncle John.

All the same but different at the same time.

Some might say that "once you've read one,you've read 'em all". Well,to some degree you have. But that's like saying "Once you've seen one horse race you've seen 'em all" In case you have never read one of these books,they are the type of thing to leave laying around for anyone to pick up and read ,to kill a little time. Ideal for waiting rooms,bathrooms,cottages,dens;but don't be surprised if it gets "nicked". By the way ,I love the word "nicked" .It is a common word in Britain and means pinch,swipe,pilfer,shoplift,purloin..get it? Somehow, to say someone nicked something doesn't sound as bad as stole.
Another thing about this book is that you can start anywhere,you never have to finish it, and if you forget everything in it,it doesn't matter anyway...but it was a fun read all the same.
If you are looking for a gift for someone like old uncle Harry ,who hasn't read a whole book since his school days;here would be something that would kindle his interest.
These books cover all kinds of topics;and leave on with this thought ,every time you turn a page; "I didn't know that!" Such as;

What do you call that metal part on the end of your shoelace? No, it's not a tip..It's an Aglet!

I've been keeping a list of "INSULTS' which is getting quite long. This book gives 35 of them; many new to me.You know, ones like ;

"He's not playing with a full deck"

Here's a couple that were new to me;

"A few fries short of a Happy Meal."

"The wheel's spinning, but the hamster's dead."

"Body by Fisher, brains by Mattel."

"Has an IQ of 2,but it takes 3 to grunt."

Do you knnw that the final words of Major General John Sedgwick ,commander of the Sixth Army Corps during the Civil Was were ? "Dodging for single bullets? I tell you they could not hit an elephant at this distance."

Uncle John does with useless ,but interesting information ;what Robert Ripley did with the unbelievable...Believe It or Not!

A compendium of almost totally useless, but precious,tidbits

This book helped me make it through Confucious and a 500 page book on anthropology. Uncle John continually brings a smile to those in need of obscure, strange truths, that may matter very little, or a lot, in the big scheme of things.

Uncle John's Bathroom Reader isn't Just for the Bathroom
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 1997-11-18
Uncle John's Ultimate Bathroom Reader, though attempting to be "corny" in reaching its intended audience, is in fact a wonderful collection of trivia and factoids. Displayed in a way that unexpectantly breaks up topics, reading it is more like reading a nonfiction book than a traditional trivia manual just filled with facts.

Unlike most trivia books, which simply line the pages with one liner trivia tidbits, this book is more like "the rest of the story" on topics ranging from retail product failures to most notable quotables from a wide range of celebraties.

This book is a must for anyone planning to take a long uneventful drive, train or plane trip, or for between those hot shuffleboard matches on a cruise ship.

I got this book as a gift, and I'd really recommend it. I'm not a picnic person (yet) and eating outside is not usually my thing. Apologies to the authors. Anyways, the info and history at the beginning of this book made me smile. Recipes like "Broiled Chicken" might seem really obvious to some people, but I followed their instructions and I was amazed at the great stuff I could offer my friends. Maybe I'll take some things to eat outside, but whatever, this book is interesting and has lots of good and easy recipes. thanks

Trivia by the Numbers

Review Date: 2007-10-24
I have lots of trivia and "useless information" books, but this is my favorite for 2 main reasons--first, it is in alphabetical order by topic, from advertising to World Trade Center (9/11). Secondly, it presents the information in statistical format, so everything is in terms of superlatives or amounts: most, best, biggest, smallest, percentages, number, odds, etc. In addition, the author has researched every imaginable source for the facts on nearly every topic. For example, number of parking spaces in US (Kansas City Star); pairs of jeans owned by average American (Women's Wear Daily); most books written about a president (USA Today), etc. This book is great for lovers of trivia, statistics, and random information, as well as people with short attention spans. Only the footnotes are complete sentences, but You can easily read the 329-page book in one sitting. I highly recommend it.

Review Date: 2006-12-10
This book is absolutely brilliant. More than a bunch of random statistics thrown together, this book makes me laugh out loud multiple times per page. If the great content weren't enough, the juxtaposition of various stats is so clever. Case in point, something like "The percent of 70 year old men who say their wives are more beautiful than they were when first married - 74%. Next stat: The percent of 70 year old men who need glasses: 89%.
Stuff like this is what the book is about - truly an impressive compendium, well delivered.
I can only imagine what kind of work must have gone into writing such a book. As another reviewer wrote, this is the perfect bathroom book. Buy it - you won't regret it.

More than just a trivia book, the information is presented with the story behind the story, providing a wealth of interesting information you never knew. That's really why you get hooked. When you get to the end, the author lists his website address, which has even more Vital Statistics to keep you addicted.

Answering life's deeper questions...

The Imponderables book series by David Feldman is the pinnacle of interesting and useful bathroom reading! Since the beginning of the series, Feldman has been highlighting questions that we didn't even know we had (like exactly why is it that a mile is 5,280 feet? and where is Donald Duck's brother?) then he finds "the experts" on any given subject to answer the question. At the end of each question and answer, you are left with a little better insight into the world around you (and you can go out and impress your friends with an expanded catalog of obscure anecdotes).

These books are fantastic overall. They are one part almanac, one part encyclopedia and one part a book form of the show Mythbusters. Many of the questions Feldman seeks the answers to are sent to him by his many readers who want to know about these little-known facts (like why there are 18 holes in a golf course and why tennis balls are fuzzy). Okay, these may not be the most important questions in the world, but these are the things we take for granted in everyday life that we normally don't take the time to stop and think (why is that little finger on our hands called the pinky?).

Feldman has been answering these questions since the first Imponderables in 1986. He has a masters degree in popular culture from Bowling Green State University in Ohio and taught to first ever college course on Soap Operas. If you enjoy trivia, David Feldman is the man for you. He uncovers the hidden meanings and lost history of sports, food, words, science, politics, and everything in between, often in a humorous and insightful way.

So where did Oreos get their name?
What is the difference between Dead End signs and No Outlet signs?
Why does the letter K mean Strike Out in baseball?

You'll have to read the books to find out.

If you take golf seriously - show me the golfer who doesn't - you know some of the facts in this book. But it will be the rare sportsperson who knows the game as thoroughly as Mathieson, a Eugene resident and retired high school guidance counselor and basketball coach. Organized into four major sections - the tours, the majors, the amateurs and miscellaneous bits - this is more than a collection of questions and answers; it's an entertaining way to present a brief but solidly researched history of the game of bogies, mashies and spikes.

What a fun book to read. Not only did it bring back memories, it prompted conversations with our children about all the old shows. It was a great conversation starter and made our family trip this Thanksgiving a lot of fun.

It will be my gift of choice to give family and friends this year.

Should Be a Board Game!

So you think you know TV huh? Well don't be so sure of yourself until you read the fun new television trivia book "You Watch Too Much TV" by newcomer Ken Kessler. Within the pages you'll find 50 chapters of TV trivia that spans over multiple generations from the early black and white days to the the latest fad-Reality TV. It doesn't matter if you're a fan of American Idol or Love American Style. There's something in this book from everyone.

Sure TV trivia books may come and go but what makes this book unique is the way it is categorized. While lots of TV trivia books focus on certain eras, this book divides each chapter by categories such as TV theme songs, single parent-themed shows, and even cop shows. What character on Gilligan's Island is named in the theme song besides Gilligan? Who played Cagney in the pilot episode of Cagney and Lacey? What was Eddie's father's name on The Courtship of Eddie's Father? Don't know? It doesn't matter. You'll have fun learning.

The only flaw with this book is the fact that it expands across so many generations of television that some people may feel left out. After all, there are people who never even heard of My Favorite Martian, Bonanza, or even Fear Factor. Still with this minor distraction it will still be difficult to put this well researched book down. In fact, it wouldn't be a surprise to see the board game. Pick it up, gather the family around and just have fun with this book. This one is definitely a winner.
