This unprofessionally put together book (just look at the table of contents) is nothing new, and the questions are certainly not "fantastic." The format is the same old same old multiple choice and the supposed trivia is stuff we already know or worse, don't care about. The author's foil answers are supposed to be funny, but they're rather goofy. What a waste of money.

What fun!

How could anyone not enjoy this book? The first page had me hooked. As some of the others have already stated, it's fun to use these questions on other people as well as yourself. The cover on my copy is worn out from people borrowing it. Sure, there are some publishing mistakes, but the joy these people had while making this book comes across like gangbusters. If you're looking for in-depth analysis of your favorite oldies, forget it. If you're looking for interesting tidbits, off-the-wall trivia and fun, then you'll enjoy it! The title says it all: jukebox TRIVIA...not jukebox analysis. You got a problem with that? Look up "trivia" in the dictionary.

Not a bad little book! This book actually throws in trivia I never heard before. Most Rock trivia books I come across relay the same old tired facts. This one is refreshing; it has some really rare, obscure and totally interesting facts about rock stars and music from the 50's, 60's and 70's. One of the fun things about it is the format: there are 1,001 questions with multiple choice answers, with the answers in the back. It's especially fun with a group of people! This book brings the fun back to Rock & Roll! Highly recommended.

My seven year old hasn't put this book down since he received it as a gift. It is just right for small hands, car rides, and waiting at the restaurant. Some of the illusions were familiar to me, but many were not. There are about 300 total, with clues/answers in the back of the book.

My family really enjoyed this book! There were are large number of variations on a theme that were new and interesting to us. One thing we really liked was the fact that the book had been done as a mix-no chapters on various categories of illusions. The children kept coming to us as they discovered the secrests of the numerous illusions and puzzle pictures. The book has kept them amazed and amused for days, in fact they don't want to put it down. The book is a great size to take on a long car ride. The enjoyment we have received from this book has made it an excellent value. This is a great gift for others, or for your own family.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED-GREAT VALUE FOR PRICE

We really enjoyed this book-while it contained many versions of what could be called 'standard' illusions, there were a large number of variations on a theme that were new to us. One thing we really liked was the fact that the book had been done as a 'hotch potch'-no chapters on various categories of illusions-the children kept coming to us as they discovered the secrets of the numerous illusions and puzzle pictures. It has kept them amazed and amused for days, in fact they didn't want to put it down. The book is a handy size and it is ideal for children to take on a long journey-we have had lonts of enjoyable time with this book. Hours of fun! Highly recommended

This book would have got five stars from me if only it had been a little bigger. This book can fit in your purse or your pocket. It is small and chunky.
I have always been intrigued by optical illusions. I wanted a book that would not bore me easily. This book suceeded in keeping my interest. The illusions in the book are diverse- some old some new. I guarantee that most will mess with your mind.
This book is highly recommended to those like myself who are fascinated with optical illusions. However, if you are looking for a book with a good size to it look elsewhere.
This book would be a great gift for someone.

Provides interesting information on a number of topics that you never realized you needed to know - like "Why do horses in an open field always seem to stand head to tail?" Then there's "Why do roaches always die on their backs?" And "Why do women in the U.S. shave their armpits?"

Belongs in Everyone's Bathroom!!

One of my best friends has assembled a rather amazing library of some 200 books: quote books, trivia books, fact books, you name it. The most interesting facet of his collection is the place where it resides--in his bathroom!!! Furthermore, David Feldman's wonderful series of Imponderables books has a place of honor in his library--right next to the toilet paper! (Needless to say, he is a bachelor as of this writing!) When Do Fish Sleep? is Feldman's third book in the series, and one of the best, in that more time is spent pondering questions that people really do care about, such as: "Why do gas gauges take an eternity to go from registering full to half full, and then drop to empty in the speed of light?" (I think we've all been there!) Feldman receives most of his imponderables from readers of the previous volumes, seeks out experts in the relevent fields to answer them (In the above example, that person is Anthony H Siegel of Ametek's US Gauge Division), and prints their response. If no one expert knows the definitive answer, Feldman will print the most prevalent theories instead. There are also many charming and funny illustrations to keep the material from getting too dry. There is also a section in the back called Frustables, which deals with Imponderables that are not easily solved, and their corresponding theories. Finally, the most important feature of this and any other Imponderables book: The articles are just the right length to read when seated "upon the throne." (Well, most of them are, anyway!) So, get When Do Fish Sleep and other Imponderables books right away. Feldman's ready wit will keep you entertained and keep you from having to make that sometimes painful search for reading matter the next time nature calls!

Entertaining book filled with useless trivia

"When do Fish Sleep" is a book of "Imponderables" (a term invented by the author meaning a question that cannot be answered by conventional means of reference books, calculations, or tangible means such as measuring). An example of an imponderable is "Why don't birds tip over when they sleep on a telephone wire?" or the like the title, "When do fish sleep?"

As with any book that covers a myriad of information, there are fascinating parts and there are parts that seem to drag on. I felt some of the imponderables in the book seemed a little elementary, such as "Why is one side of a halibut dark and the other side light?" (the dark side is for camouflage and the light side is down so it does not need to be camouflaged), "What is the purpose of corn silk?" (for pollination), and "Why are bowling shoes ugly?" (so people don't steal them). Other questions were fascinating such as "Why do roaches always die on their backs?" (this is not always true, but it has a lot to do with the shape of the roach) and "Why do recipes warn us not to use fresh kiwi or pineapple in gelatin?" (the fruits contain an enzyme that break protein down). The book even has a section of "Frustables", questions where readers have mailed in theories or questions that do not yet have an answer. The author even provides a way to contact them to answer frustables or to propose new imponderables.

As a geek that likes to learn, even useless information, I enjoyed the book. However, the book had no format. I felt the book could have benefited from a table of contents or have the questions divided into related sections instead of aimlessly wander from topic to topic in the book.

If you have a friend who sits and reads the cards from a "Trivial Pursuit" game, this is definitely a book for them. I'd recommend the book for people whose joy in life is the pursuit of knowledge or a teenager/young adult that is curious about the world around them. The book is not really a thrilling read, so I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to a person who is looking for an interesting read.

While I think the content of the book was worth a solid 4 stars, I found the lack of structure in the book distracting enough to deduct a star.

Answering life's deeper questions...

The Imponderables book series by David Feldman is the pinnacle of interesting and useful bathroom reading! Since the beginning of the series, Feldman has been highlighting questions that we didn't even know we had (like exactly why is it that a mile is 5,280 feet? and where is Donald Duck's brother?) then he finds "the experts" on any given subject to answer the question. At the end of each question and answer, you are left with a little better insight into the world around you (and you can go out and impress your friends with an expanded catalog of obscure anecdotes).

These books are fantastic overall. They are one part almanac, one part encyclopedia and one part a book form of the show Mythbusters. Many of the questions Feldman seeks the answers to are sent to him by his many readers who want to know about these little-known facts (like why there are 18 holes in a golf course and why tennis balls are fuzzy). Okay, these may not be the most important questions in the world, but these are the things we take for granted in everyday life that we normally don't take the time to stop and think (why is that little finger on our hands called the pinky?).

Feldman has been answering these questions since the first Imponderables in 1986. He has a masters degree in popular culture from Bowling Green State University in Ohio and taught to first ever college course on Soap Operas. If you enjoy trivia, David Feldman is the man for you. He uncovers the hidden meanings and lost history of sports, food, words, science, politics, and everything in between, often in a humorous and insightful way.

So where did Oreos get their name?
What is the difference between Dead End signs and No Outlet signs?
Why does the letter K mean Strike Out in baseball?

You'll have to read the books to find out.

This book would be pretty cool. But, it is about Delaware! Come on guys, let's just face the facts: Delaware is possibly the worst state in the union. Sure, the first state and really important for chicken production, but after all, should we care that much?!? Speaking as a Maryland resident, we should just take it over.

I have driven through Delaware a million times and even lived there for awhile, but never knew all that Delaware had to offer. Thankfully, Mr. Milford's entertaining and well researched book provide insights into the great history and rich culture of the state. Many people look no further than Dewey or Rehoboth Beach, or perhaps just a small patch along I-95, but between DuPont, Caesar Rodney, the Chancery Court system, and the Place to be Somebody -- the state has a fullness to rival any larger neighboring states. I only hope Mr. Milford will continue compiling more books on other states that many people don't pay much attention to -- like Wisconsin and South Dakota.

I REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK. IT WAS GREAT TO READ ABOUT WHITEY'S OPINIONS, REASONS, EXPERIENCES, AND SOME GREAT BASEBALL STORIES. I AM A BIG FAN OF WHITEY'S AND HAVE BEEN SINCE THE 60'S. GLAD TO HEAR FROM HIM IN THIS ONE OF A KIND BOOK. WHITEY IS VERY HONEST, OPEN, AND HAS GREAT INSIGHT IN RANKING THE BEST TEAM IN BASEBALL POSOTION BY POSITION. A MUST READ FOR ALL FANS AND ESPECIALLY YANKEE FANS. THANKS WHITEY, FOR A GREAT READ AND A LOT OF ENTERTAINMENT. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Whitey Ford's new book, with former Yankee beat writer Phil Pepe,is a winner.Picking the top 5 players at each position might seem easy, until you sit and think about the long line of great players the Yankees have fielded. Not that theres a lot of controversy, but a couple of Ford's picks might surprise you.Its an enjoyable rehash for older fans with mostly familiar anecdotes. It's also an education for younger fans who might not be familiar with past Yankee greats. And the cover photo is indeed a Yankee cap, worn by them in the early 20's,although I feel that the navy blue cap with the white interlocking NY would have been a better choice.

A comfortable book

Reading Whitey Ford's "Few and Chosen" is like listening to him....soft-spoken with a twinkle in his eye. This is a book you can pick up and put down and not miss much. The stories are usually short (sometimes too short) and the anecdotes are just about what you'd expect to hear from "The Chairman of the Board".

I appreciate Whitey Ford's honesty with regard to players who preceded him. He doesn't comment on them much because he didn't see them play. Still, he gives what impressions he has. After reading Tim McCarver's disappointing and overworked "Perfect Season" several years ago, "Few and Chosen" is like a breath of fresh air.

There are a few new facts (new to me, anyway) that come out in his book, like the small numbers of home runs hit by players before Babe Ruth. Things of this nature help to make baseball more interesting to many of us.

Whitey Ford pitched the first baseball game I ever saw in 1963. I'm glad he's still around to pass on his observations to us.

I don't proclaim to be a great Yankee fan but a great baseball fan. This book has something for everyone. Besides ranking the greatest Yankees, I agree with most disagree with some, Whitey just provides some stories about players that are riveting. Most you have never heard or read anywhere else. That is what is exciting to me. These stories really bring alive a time and place that baseball was and is trying to get back to. You are brought back in time to a place in America when baseball was all important. Now you can at least experience the fun of reading about it and being there for a while.

Enjoyable and well-written

I recently read the book written by Whitey Ford, entitled Few and Chosen, published by Triumph Books. I found the book to be extremely enjoyable and very well-written. Whitney Ford offers personal and insightful analyses of the five best players at each position, and the contributions made by the players. The book provides a very creative review of the accomplishments and the character of the great players who played for the New York Yankees. I enjoyed reading the book very much. I commend Triumph Books for publishing such a creative and enjoyable book, and I highly recommend the book and the work of Whitey Ford.

Game is designed really well, good variety of questions even for the novice foodie and I like how you can play a short game or a long game.

The coverage of the topics is light but not just fluff--you really do learn some history, but also learn tasty little facts that really would be fun to use at a party. I read straight through the book and enjoyed it all.

For some reason, this slim volume reminds me of the old TV commercial for Silly String which featured a room of yawning guests as a naval officer showed off his ribbons and said, "This is from the Boer War." It's always a good idea to have something up your sleeve to break the ice with strangers that doesn't have to do with the latest edition of People Magazine. After all, you want to have some semblance of an intellect on display to make that right impression.

This is yet another quick-read book from the editors of Mental Floss Magazine, a bimonthly launched in 2001 and targeted to aspiring Trivial Pursuit masters. This particular one, "Cocktail Party Cheat Sheets", is a clever series of possible conversation-starters that will hopefully make one's deep well of knowledge seem impressive without being intrusive. There are 44 topics, a chapter a piece, somewhat random in variety except a certain level of erudition. Each has a brief summary of what it is, an appropriate context in which to bring the topic up, some intriguing trivia facts to boost your interest, and actual suggestions for starting the conversation.

Topics are all over the map though there seems to be a predominance of historical figures covered from Attila the Hun to Miles Davis to Samuel Johnson to the Brontë sisters. The Rosetta Stone, the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Magna Carta are included here, and so are the Dutch East India Company and the martini. Of particular interest to me are much-needed snapshots of James Joyce's "Ulysses" and the Qu'ran (Koran). I think it would have been more helpful had there been a better sense of organization about the information, for example, the creative way the editors used school subjects to divide the topics in another of their books, "What's the Difference?". Nonetheless, this is a fun read and well worth it for the hidden facts some of us actually crave.

our Elvis fan club got all of us this book. it was a good book we all liked it. I liked it best in the parts about Elvis' movies and his family and his friends too. the part about when Elivs bought Graceland and when he built onto it and the changes he made was probably the funniest part. I recommend it to Elvis fans or Elvis fan clubs.

the funniest book i have read in ten years!

from just seeing the title i thought it was a elvis-bashing book but i read it and it was VERY MUCH funny and still respectful and tasteful. i thought it was gonna make fun of elvis but it was just a bunch of funny stories and trivia and stuff without being mean or rude or anything. i really recommend it if you like elvis.
