This is an awesome little book! I used it with my kids during homeschooling. There are 4 different categories on each page, with one question for each. The children can choose their category and then answer the question. Different points are awarded, depending on degree of difficulty, for correct answers. This is a fun game and a rewarding learning experience as well. The answers are given on the back side of each page with references to the section of the catechism from which the information was obtained.

When 13 Was a Lucky Number

Fr. Elvins' wonderful little book is must-reading for fans of English Catholic history and anyone wanting to learn more about the debt English-speaking Christians owe the Catholic Church.
Written like a cross between Tom Woods' "How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization" and John Zmirnak's funny but reverent "The Bad Catholic's Guide to Good Living," "Catholic Trivia" explains how gestures like "knocking on wood," a reference to the wood of the cross, and the omnipresent British adjective "bloody," a truncation of the oath "by Our Lady," were simple ways by which the English reminded themselves of their Catholic identity.
To erase this identity and stamp out "popish superstition," Protestant reformers, especially the Puritans, changed the meaning of common symbols. For instance, the number 13 once was considered a lucky number as it referred to Christ and His twelve apostles. Similarly, walking under a ladder was a sign of *good* fortune as it brought to mind both Christ's sacrifice on the elevated cross and -- thanks to the triangle formed by wall, floor and ladder -- the Trinity.
Yet as often as not, a censured benign and potentially beneficial practice, e.g., carrying a Rosary in one's pocket, was replaced by a silly, truly superstitious one, e.g., carrying a rabbit's foot instead.
"Catholic Trivia" is written as a series of brief, often humorous encyclopedia-style entries accompanied by the illustrations of John Ryan, a famous British cartoonist.
I picked up the book on a recent trip to London and found myself frequently reading passages aloud to my wife during the flight home; several were laugh-out-loud funny, and all were entertaining and informative. I suspect you'll agree.

I purchased this book to motivate me to pick up my bible daily. (I never know where to start, or what to study.)
This book has done that, and more. I find myself pulling out different bible versions and comparing the different word meanings when answering the questions. It's like having little random bible studies with each day a surprise. One simple question can send me in so many different directions.
It was written for all denominations using the KJV bible. Random questions have been organized into short topics. (Creation, God, Satan, etc.) I look forward to my daily mini bible lessons, and find myself picking up my bible more often. This books is a little gold nugget.

I purchased this purely and simply to help with that inevitable last crossword clue that stares back at you off the page, as much as to say you can think till the cows come home but you are not going to get the answer.
This book is the ideal solution for that situation. No, it does not have everything you may need to know in it, that would be impossible, unless the book was too heavy to lift. But funnily enough, it does have most things. It is well laid out in a style that makes finding what you want relatively easy. Once you have it you realise it is useful for far more things than crosswords. The answers to question posed in other books or on television or radio. Questions asked by children or grandchildren, it uses are endless and I find that once you have read something, as opposed to hearing it on the radio or television you tend to remember it better. I don't know why this should be, but it seems to work for me.

Wayne Mausser has updated his original version of this book, and he did a marvelous job of it. As a card-carrying Diehard Cubs Fan of 49 years, I found the original good reading and informative. I gave a copy to my son to read. It helped make him into a Cubs fan, but better than that, it made a reader out of him. I'm planning to give the new edition to my grandsons to make them into Cubs fans and hopefully to encourage them to be readers as well. This book is suitable for children with a third-grade reading level all the way up to adults who like to relive their childhoods as Cubs fans. It's a fun read that's both entertaining and informative, a magical combination for any reader.
