Great Book for Beginning/Intermediate Investors

This was the first book I read on investing. I learned about papertrading and the various strategies he wrote about. It was easy enough for me to learn and I knew very little about investing other than buy and hold for long periods of time. I've read and reread the book a few times and use it as a reference.

You should have TC2000 in order to get the best understanding of this book possible. If you don't have this software, it will make doing the examples much harder, so then, I would say don't waste your time trying to understand his examples.

I like how he talks about his trades and whether he made or lost money. You can back track in TC2000 to see whether he made good trades or not.

The papertrading is invaluable. If you can't successfully papertrade, don't bother using real money because you'll lose more with real money than papertrading. I am now using real money and making about 1/5 to 1/4 what I did papertrading. That's still excellent.

This book can change your success rate in the market by leaps and bounds. Why would anybody put real money in the market unless they had worked the bugs out first!!!! This book is also great for the experienced trader to enhance their trades. Anyone trading today should not be without this book. Check out his new software for practice and real trades - it's incredible!

Once past all the advertising, the book is a good tool for learning when to enter and exit a trade. However, I found that the examples used often are more "ideal" than what is actually found in the market. Use some more difficult examples, David, and teach us how to really understand what's going on with a stock.

This book would be a great book worth 4 stars if it wasn't for all the advertising in the book. It's a good thing it's spiral bound, and you can always rip out the advertising. This book teaches you a few entry techniques for stocks and options and has forms for recording and paper trading. Get rid of all the damn advertising, and this would be a great book!

A powerful tale of greed and passion
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 1999-01-28
AN OUTCAST OF THE ISLANDS was both Conrad's second novel and the second novel in a trilogy of books featuring Almayer (the first book being ALMAYER'S FOLLY and the third Conrad's final novel, THE RESCUE), who is a major minor character in this one after being the major character in his first novel. This novel is not as strong an effort as the novels from his major phase, but it is nonetheless a book of great power and wonderfully illustrates most of the great themes that run through all of his books. I have a love-hate relationship with Conrad, because while I respond to the marvelously depicted male characters in his books (his women are usually implausibly stupid and cardboardish) and their conflicts with the universe and each other, I find the world he describes as being a little too bleak and the cosmos far too impersonal. All of his characters are doomed to ineffecual action, and their fates are determined by forces and factors outside of themselves, or perhaps to some degree by motives within themselves over which they have no power. I do not like Conrad's universe, but I admit the power of his creation.

This is not one of Conrad's greatest works. It belongs in a tier immediately below his very greatest works like NOSTROMO, THE SECRET AGENT, UNDER WESTERN EYES, HEART OF DARKNESS, LORD JIM, and VICTORY. Nonetheless, slightly lesser Conrad is more rewarding than major works of other writers, and I heartily recommend this novel (as well as his other books) to any serious reader.

Book for the Die Hard Conrad fans- NOT for the casual reader

I love any book by Joseph Conrad and am on my way to reading just about everything he wrote. My next goal is to re-read it all again.

However, Outcast of the Island is not a "GREAT" book or piece of literature. It is interesting and worth reading especially if you like Conrad. I see it as a colonial/romance novel critical of the "British Empire" and of a man caught in the empire trade game who is led by his own devices to survive in his own game.

I like the descriptions of the exotic location, the dangerous love interest, and everything that is Conrad in style.

His writing style is too generous in his early work. He could be more sparse (needs to put his language on a stairmaster and lean it down). Anyway, I don't want to be against the book. If you are actually thinking about it, then get it and read it. It's not long and is fairly entertaining.

Bottome-line: First time Conrad readers go get a collection of his short stories. Everybody else-- sure why not.

"I know the white man...in many lands have I seen them, always the slaves of their desires..."
This is Conrads second book and like his first it deals with the colonial enterprise but in this book white men are their own worst enemies. The native Malay characters are given more in the way of identity in this book and they are seen as having complex views. There is intrigue in this book as white men from different nations try to assert their dominance in the region but the Malays too have a plan and that is to take advantage of the whites aggressive and competitive natures and set them against each other. Great plot. But Conrad also gives you each characters story and each character is always more interesting than whatever role they are playing in the overall plot. One of the most attractive and elaborated themes in this book is the one of mans place in nature and mans own nature. The beauty of the tropical locale is made even more attractive and alluring by the women who walk through the foliage like "apparitions" veiled in "sunlight and shadow". Conrad describes the forests, the light in the tree tops, and the shadows on the forest floor and all nature is seen as metaphor for mans own dualities and incongruites. A much matured writer from Almayers Folly. The plot is simpler than Almayer was but thats good. The simpler plot allows Conrad more latitude to deal with the individual characteristics and that is certainly one of Conrads strengths. He sometimes overdoes it with the repeated use of words like inscrutable and the always heavy darkness, and his overall view of man seems dim, as man in his eyes is an only partially lit(enlightened) being. To Conrad man remains a lost creature for the most part who just by chance or luck or ill omen gets caught up in events he cannot fully comprehend. A limited resource man may be but while reading it is hard not to see it his way. The summing up scene at the end of the book with a drunken Almayer(who also appeared in Conrads first book, the Almayer of Almayers Folly) relating the now long passed events of the book to a traveling and equally drunk botanist is an excellent closing comment on the continued folly that is the colonial enterprise and man in general.

A Powerful Tale of the Moral Destruction of a Man

Conrad has a exciting style of writing which consists of artfully mixed poetic prose and moral analysis. The language of the text alone is enough to make this a great novel, perhaps even an epic poem. The intensity of the prose is such that I was driven backwards into my seat for most of the novel. A prequel to _Almayer's Folly_, An Outcast...is a true must read.

To be honest, I borrowed this book from a public library because the bad experience from its precedessor The Innergame of Trading had deterred me from wasting my hard earned money on this.

For detailed review please see my review of the Innergame of Trading because the two books are so similar, of very low value and repeating the same basic trading psychology stuff like a successful trader got to have discipline, focus, bravery to cut loss short and let profit ride blah blah blah, except that the interview part in Outer is about 100 page longer than that in Inner. (160 vs 60) However, the quality of the interview content is even lower.

I really cannot agree what the authors claimed on the book cover that their book helped the readers to model the trading strategies of Today's Market Wizards. How? Just by going through the lines of the interview. I am afraid that's more diffcult than achieving a 6 month winning streak.

Excellent! A must for the serious trader's library!

This book is one of the best that I have read on trading. Its a definite keeper. I have read it several times. The book really helped me overcome some serioius problems in my trading -- and I am an experienced trader. The book gave me a fresh, "ah-ha" perspective to trading. Afterwards, my approach to trading improved dramatically.

While some may think the title is misleading, it really isn't. Once you complete the book, you will be able to better appreciate the circle of trading life the authors take the reader on. The middle section, on "modelling excellence" is a little tedious. But in retrospect, I found this section to be really quite valuable, especially the NLP tools. (In recent years, NLP has been credited for improving peak performers, in many highly competitive areas, e.g., sports, sales, management & military training).

If you find the beginnng a bit slow, then I would recommend you begin by reading the last 2 sections first and then proceed to the beginning and read the book all the way through to the end.

Again, I rate this book a strong buy, if not a market outperform!

I know that Howard Abell is a very capable trader. However, you do not need to purchase all of his books due to the great deal of redundancy present in his writings. The title of this book is misleading. If you are looking for specific strategies or new ideas forget about it. I am not saying one needs to have a new idea in order to make money in the markets; what I am saying merely is that this book is more a pyschological treatise on the aspects of trading than one on methodologies. Out of all of his books this is the only title I can recommend. The Inner Game of trading is also good. But thats about all you need.

This book contains some cute models for beginners. It contains no challenges for intermediate or advanced folders. To be fair, I don't think they are aiming at that audience though!

Most of the more advanced looking models, such as the flamingo, contain cutting, so they are not actually difficult at all (and grate against my idea of no cutting in origami).

This origami book has many things going for it. It has wonderful color pictures depicting what the final product will look like as well as good black and white pictures of the step-by-step folding process. If the clear directions do not help you, these pictures certainly will. Also, unlike many other origami books, which show just the basic folds at the beginning which you must flip back to, it has all the directions on the same or sequential pages, plus has the picture of what you are making one or two pages before the direction. This has many cute ideas for paper art and would be enjoyable to do with a child. The only downside is that it only comes with ten sheets of 6"x6" origami paper, but you can purchase many kinds at a local craft store.

A few comments about this book:

* Quite a few animal, fish, & bird models that actually look like what they're supposed to be, & look pretty impressive. I particularly like the otter floating on his back.

* Also quite a few flower models. I don't find these as interesting, but your mileage may vary.

* Unusually clear folding diagrams -- black & white pictures of every single step in every single model.

* Several models that can be made with 8.5" x 11" paper -- excellent for dull moments at work or school.

* Purists, be warned: a number of models involve slitting or trimming the paper.

* Well-suited for somebody like me -- an adult who's used other origami books before but isn't skilled enough for the Lang/Montroil/"Origami to Astonish & Amuse" books yet.

* Also seems well-suited for kids, because the illustrations are very literal. There are color photos of all completed models, and the folding instructions, as said, are step-by-step.

* Probably not interesting to accomplished folders, because quite a few of the folds are standard (the jumping frog, for instance).

I couldn't give it 5 stars because I haven't finished the book yet, about 1/2 way through. But if it keeps on track it should be a 5 star book. I've learned quite a few things in the first half of the book. He goes over projecting moves from trend lines, trend angles, validity and exhaustion. Doing the same for rectangles and most of the other patterns. I've skimmed over other parts and he talks about pin bars, which I have to say are one of the more reliable patterns. I would say it's the best book on the subject I've read so far. Although I have encountered a few free sites that are easier to read because they cut out all the fluff and get to the grit of the matter even giving percentage of success etc. However, over all I would rate it as a must read.

I have to say that I am pleased by the information presented in this book, which is organized and presented well. I've read quite a few texts on the subject, by Elder, Tharp, Link, Weinstein, and so on (which are must-reads, by the way), and so this particular text served to complement and enhance the knowledge and skills that I already posessed.

Pring doesn't provide any magic answers here -- and you shouldn't expect any. He simply discusses topics that any aspiring investor/speculator/trader should be intimately familiar with. If you feel you already know everything there is to know about price and volume patterns, trend lines, support/resistance, basic western-style formations, etc..., then this book probably isn't for you. However, if you want to brush up on the subject with a text that presents this information well, then this is not a bad way to go.

3 stars sounds like a bad review, I probably would have given it maybe 3.75 if that were an option. Anyways, the book (short at about 80 pages) starts out with a simple but concise / effective overview of how he explains the cycle of the market, i.e. stocks go up, stall, go down, stall, go back up...

I have not actually watched the DVD yet, but the book itself really only has one solid trading idea / setup. That's why I gave the book just less than 4 stars: it isn't filled with fluff really, but is pretty short on substance overall, you are better off probably reading it in a couple hours at the store.

The "Technician's Guide To Day & Swing Trading" by Martin J. Pring has a great CD presentation. The CD presentation covers the same information in the book chapter by chapter. I found the CD presentation much easier to understand than reading the book.

The book combines technical indicators with tips for day and swing trading under different market conditions. Overall, I would highly recommend this combination book and CD to anyone that wants to make money in the stock market. From my own experience, the material sets reasonable expectations and does not make false claims on making easy money in the stock market over a sustained period of time.

Whatever one thinks of technical analysis, even a died-in-the-wool fundamental and value investor trembles at the thought of going against the famous "head-and-shoulders" pattern. This book will give you an excellent background in the basics without overwhelming you with a lot of technical detail. The book discusses everything from moving averages and Bollinger Bands to oscillators such as relative strength, MACD (moving average convergence-divergence), ROC (rate of change), the parabolic indicator, and Pring's own proprietary KST indicator, and so on. Also, the included CD contains a four-hour video presentation on the most important topics. Pring says in the introduction that, in contrast to most CDs in books, which are throw-aways, the CD is actually the most important thing and the book is the "throw-away." In any case, there is a lot of value and information here between the book and the CD and overall this is a fine book to get you to the next level in terms of your trading expertise.

As a former resident of New York City who "haunted" the numerous trimmings, flower and ribbon shops adjacent to New York's garment center, this was one shop that I would particulary enjoy getting lost in. It was a fabulous melange of "stuff" for trimming everything, much of it found by happenstance in the original cramped, dimly lit shop.

I never knew what I would find there and I especially drooled over the sad and neglected-looking antique metallic trims, tassels, fabrics, et al., buying a trim here, a tassel there, adding it to my stash for one day's sumptuous project.

One never really saw a proprietor about and would wonder who would pop out of the dark caverns of shelves and cabinets unexpectedly. This made the place a bit mysterious and fun all at once.

I have not been down to Tinsel Trading in many years, although judging from the photos in the book, it appears to have a new feel about it with order, spaciousness and brightness replacing the dim and cramped aisles of shelves and boxes. The shops look very inviting......although I must admit to a bit of nostalgia for the mystery of the former!

I was truly looking forward to seeing this book and the accompanying utilization of some of the many old-style trimmings that the shop specialized in, but there was hardly a hint of what was it's mainstay that could have been showcased in some really sophisticated or antique-inspired projects. I especially enjoyed reading the history of the shop and took particular note of the photo of the current basement "filled with years of treasures"!

With very few exceptions there was, sorry to say, nothing really inspiring at all about the featured decor and projects.
A white wicker hamper having a few silk flowers glued to the corners, a lampshade with too-heavy looking feather trim at the bottom edge were amateurish at best along with a couple of covered boxes also shown. Things of this caliber, we see all day long in the endless parade of cutesy, tacky, tasteless, childish, American "craft" magazines that appeal mainly to "terminal beginners" and not to those who are starving for and who appreciate more sophisticated, inspiring, ideas.

There also seems to be a bit too much repetition of photos showing the same objects over and over again....this takes up a few too many pages.

Sorry to say, I have returned this book...I expected a better representation and taste level coming from this venerable shop.

I found this book to be a vast waste of time. There is very little of practical use to the trader. The author spends the majority of the book on his "Triple Crown" of reducing taxes. None of which you can do without a CPA. You would be better off visiting this book at your local bookstore, jotting down the "Triple Crown" and then hiring a CPA to explain it to you. The writing is poor and difficult to follow -- not because of the technical difficulty, but, because the sentences and paragraphs are so poorly constructed. Save the $( ) and look elsewhere.

It's much better than Tesser's previous book. There are lots of examples and even goes into details on estate planning in addition to the tax advantages of trader's status. This book will definitely give you something to think about how to plan and do your taxes!

Bravo! Bravo!

The Trader's Tax Solution is a must for any investor who wants to minimize his/her taxes. Mr. Tesser also provides wonderful insight into retirement and estate planning. Well worth the price! If you are interested in legally reducing your tax bite, then this is the book for you.

Be prepared to pay a pretty penny to your CPA

I own this update and his last book. Basically concepts are good and prose somewhat entertaining. However, here is the catcher. If you are going to use a CPA for doing all this stuff be prepared to hock your house and your family. What the CPA'S do not get the lawyers will when they charge you for setting up your FLP. I saw one bit of communication where the authors states that refiling was not worthwhile when his fees were factored in !!!!. That should tell you something. You do not believe me just call his office for a quote. This guy's has found the hoy grail of relieving most investors...opps ! i mean us traders from our profits !

WHY THE HELL THE GOVT DID NOT MAKE TAXES SIMPLER IS BEYOND ME...!. trust the feds to complicate anythin they touch...!

PROBABLY BECAUSE THE CPA LOBBY LIKE THE TRIAL LAWYERS AND THE NRA HAVE DEEP POCKETS TO KEEP THINGS THERE WAY.
