As a first year teacher working with students in grades PK-6, I have found Children Moving to be an invaluable resource when planning my lessons. The diagrams that outline the different locomotor, non-locomotor and manipulative activities help break down all the skills I teach. I recommend this book to any and all physical educators.

A Methodology for Trading

"A Course in Trading" provides a rationale for selecting buy/sell prices and understanding the marketplace. I very much enjoy the concise technical presentation of the complex yet understandable lessons. I have successfully applied the lessons learned to my personal trading activities.

Buy and Hold may not be the best invesment model for the "New Business" paradigm. As history has shown, most of the "original" automobile manufacturers and airlines are now out of business. Accordingly, many of the "New Business" companies will too become extinct. Unless you invest in Mutual Funds, or have some other form of money management, you must participate actively in the market. "A Course in Trading" will provide a rationale for your trading decisions.

It took me 10 days as well to receive the book. It arrived fine, just a scratch out of previous owners name on inside cover, but that's it. The book was in great condition, nice covers, all the pages, no highlighting or underlining..overall very pleased! save $70 than if I had gotten it at school, used!

Don't forget to read the fine print!!! As was stated (in the fine print), shipping took 10 days by USPS. Condition of textbook was acceptable with some areas highlighted and annotated by previous owner. Nothing that was detrimental for my purpose. A great alternative to E-books that just wear out your eyes and rely on a high quality computer monitor.

While some of the "results discussion" chapters were a bit dry, overall this book provides the hard data points needed in the "how do we best attract new members" discussions every association must have. The segmenting questions were most insightful.

If you're in any way responsible for new member acquisition or member retention for an association, this is a good read.

Better Understanding the Decsion to Join

This is an exciting time for those involved in managing and marketing association membership.

Perhaps as never before, associations are looking for and using data to make important decisions. As we learned last year from the ASAE and the Center's book, 7 Measures of Success, there is a clear correlation between successful associations and those that build the organization around the collection and use of data.

Now practical assistance in data driven decisions for membership professionals is available with the release by ASAE and The Center for Association Leadership of The Decision to Join: How individuals determine value and why they choose to belong,

The Decision to Join survey went to the members and prospects of 18 individual membership associations including the:

* American Chemical Society
* American College of Healthcare Executives
* American Geophysical Union
* American Health Information Management Association
* American Society for Quality
* American Society of Civil Engineers
* American Society of Mechanical Engineers
* The College of American Pathologists
* Credit Union Executives Society
* Emergency Nurses Association
* Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
* Institute of Food Technologists
* National Association of Secondary School Principals
* Athletic Trainers Association
* National Court Reporters Association
* National Society of Accountants
* Project Management Institute
* School Nutrition Association

A total of 16,944 responses to the survey were received from current members, former members, and those who have never been members.

The book explores the impact of issues on membership like: the image of associations, reasons members drop, generations and career level, gender, and employment setting.

The top personal benefits for deciding to join an association highlighted by respondents are networking with other professionals in the field and gaining access to up to date information.

However, the study also supports the concept that a member's decision to be a part of an association is also tied to much more than a classic procurement decision. Respondents highlighted that "promoting a greater appreciation of the role and values" of the association motivated the decision to join.

The Ethical Imperative: Why Moral Leadership Is Good Business

For anyone who believes Business needs a conscience
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 1999-11-02
This book wasn't written to convince anyone that the business community lacks a moral conscience. It was written to help employees, citizens, manager, owners and CEOs deal with the problem. It's a workbook for new and on-going businesses which want to incorporate ethical practices into the company.

Dalla Costa names companies which have acted with a moral conscience and explains how this has not hindered their success, but has even stood them in good stead through a crisis. The words moral and business don't usually go together, in fact many people think they are opposites. It's all about money and many business people will tell you so...until a law suit arises. Then they whip out their ethics policy and blame a "rogue employee".

Dalla Costa doesn't just concentrate on U.S. companies. His imperative for the global economy is global responsibility.

He has the experience to speak knowledgeably and the plan to help us begin to change.

Four stars because it was tedious at times but still worth reading.

Optimistically orienting us toward a global ethic.
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 1999-03-30
The author demonstrates the connection between ethical conduct and successful business. He provides a critique of economic assumptions and tackles hard issues head-on. He argues forcefully against the pessimistic, fatalistic view that ethics are the ideal-but amoral behavior is the 'real.' He sees the emergence of a global ethic. To achieve a global ethic Dalla Costa offers a business model for an ethical orientation which includes: manage assets professionally; conduct interactions with humanity; be fair; be honest; strive for justice; and honor the environment.

The author's view is that a global ethic involves the policies of nations and strategies of companies, but at its core is the ethical orientation of the individual. The current stuggle for achieving "transparancy" in financial matters in most parts of the world, however, points up the complex challenges the global economy presents on the most basic level. The ideas in this book are a tough sell, but they are persuasively and clearly presented, leaving one with hope. Dalla Costa is clearly one who sees light at the end of the tunnel. Excellent. The perfect forex primer!

Although this book is primarily written for people that are clueless about foreign exchange (FX), it will actually teach the clued-up a thing or two also. The broad range of topics covered is what you'd expect to find in a book that is considerably thicker and more expensive - there's a detailed insight into the marketplace and its participants, the products (spot, forwards, swaps, options), fundamental vs. technical analysis, and more. The author writes in a concise, but extremely readable style and makes extensive use of pictures and diagrams. Furthermore, the book is bang up to date with recent developments in FX, such as the Euro and electronic dealing (that is, at the time I wrote this review). Finally, as an added bonus, this book is not overly biased towards the US or the US dollar, which I feel is especially appropriate for an FX book. Highly recommended!

Great for the clueless but not for the pros

As another reviewer noted, this book is definitely not for people who are ready to study "financial engineering". It is, however, PERFECT for people who want to learn about foreign exchange but don't have a finance background. It does not TRY to be a book for rocket scientists, so criticizing it for that is unfair. More advanced books that have lots of integral and summation signs assume that you already understand the basic information in this book.

This is the only book I have found which explains this important market at a level that practically anyone can understand. I'm a math student doing a mathematical modelling project involving finance and investment and so I needed something like this: I do not know anyone who invests and the simple fact is that most people don't know much about the mechanics of the markets. This book fills in a gap in plain English with little verbosity or unnecessary digressions. Thus, as a basis for gaining intuition and domain knowledge in an undergraduate university project, this book is everything it attempts to be.

This book is great for the beginner who knows nothing at all about spreads but who desires to learn and also for the intermediate trader who wants a greater depth of knowledge. The information is quite comprehensive, and presented in language that is very readable. This book help me get an understanding of the fundamentals behind markets. It belongs in the library of every trader.

Courtney Smith's textbook is specifically and comprehensive about spreads.

His whole book is about spreads and nothing but spreads. Probably the most useful Spread book from the fundamental perspective.

He has a lot to teach there is a lot to learn. It is the kind of book you'll keep in your spread-trading library. But will not by itself excite you to get up and trade.

It is comprehensive in that it stays on the subject like a dog with a bone, unlike Schwager's books that are all over the futures game.

He has a lot of experience and is well known in the field of spreads. This book is in my top ten Spread Traders library.

It is a well written book, but this edition is plagued with print errors, and mistakes in at least one chart. Don't make the same mistake I did; buy the last edition (I bought mine on the store with very little time ...) Anyway, I guess the last version is corrected and updated. I like the fact that mixes personal experience with academic and corporate studies about the market!

For the price this is a great book to learn and help understand the specifics that make up all the basics in trading commodity-futures. After reading this book, I felt as if I had taken a formal college course on the subject of Futures and understood it much better from various angles now. There's no "hype" in the book, no agendas, no further products or services to buy being pitched to you, just plain vanilla (ok, french vanilla) basics being laid out for you in textbook fashion for you to digest in your own terms. I like that - it's refreshing in a way. It is probably like this because it was really written 20+ years ago (don't worry, it's been revised many times to be modernized - 5th edition, 1993). The book was originally written and printed in "Commodities" magazine as a popular mini-course series (before the magazine changed it's name to the modern "Futures" magazine we know it as today). Even though I knew much of the content from personal experience (the most costly way) or from other readings, my CTA, etc, I did not always understand the "why" behind the rules I was following & how the markets work the way they do from both a technical and fundmental perspective (dynamics). Of the some 28 chapters, I really took interest in almost every one. I can't say that about most of the other trading books I've read. Put it this way... if I could keep only 5 trading books, this would be one of them. You'll likely dump more than that on the commissions for 1 trade - or, worse yet, even more than that on 1 bad trade. ** Beginners, I recommend the following: If your goal is to have deeper pockets from trading - then you must first go deeper in your understanding of futures markets & trading them (i.e. Read the book).

I borrowed this book looking to perform one specific task, which I found at the end of a chapter. I spent an hour working through the entire chapter instead and easily learned, understood, and REMEMBERED how to perform a variety of tasks dealing with macros. The problems are simple, GOAL oriented with excellent recap sessions for memorization. Tasks designed as springboards for more advanced projects.

This book is extremely applicable to numerous problems businesses face when using excel. Work your way from basic formuals to writing VBA code and formatting the various Microsoft Office programs using excel. I was able to use the examples given in the book to have Excel command outlook to automatically email me if a date was 2 or 3 days away.

An excellent tool---worth the investment by any small business using excel. Great companion to the Help feature on excel.

many detailed tasks

Review Date: 2005-05-16
The authors have gone to some length to comprehensively explain and test many aspects of Excel. It's probably accurate to say that the testing is as important as the teaching. The book is geared explicitly to letting you do numerous specific tasks (or problems). Vital in internalising the information in the lessons.

Actually, the main narrative is itself very action oriented. You are taken through detailed pathways into Excel. Hence the book is good for those who have trouble learning from a standard text that they might typically find to be too general. Another usage context is if you need a quick refresher; especially on specific operations.

The problems themselves don't seem too hard. The biggest issue may simply be finding the time and resolve to go through some rather lengthy ones. But then again, the problems are not meant to be trivial "one-liners". There are other books, notably by O'Reilly, of the cookbook format. Where the "recipes" are one or two pages of steps you do with some program. These certainly have merit, when you are looking for solutions to simple queries. But the GO book is more at a project level, with inherently lengthier tasks.
