A new way of celbrating our advent and christmas experience!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-12-30
This book has helped make my 2003 Advent and Christmas experience the most prayful experience in my life. Folowing in the footsteps of the Stations of the Cross, this book honors and reflects on the many events leading to the birth of our Savior. A small group in our church used it as a celbration expereince during the third week of Advent. Many said it was a great experience one they wish to do again next year. I have bought three copies of it for Christmas gifts for those in ministry. I highly recomend this book for personal and small group advent and Christmas worship services.

An excellent book which would make a great film
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1999-01-23
This is one of Phil's strangest books as it contains few , if none of his themes or trademarks. It is a simple story of a man, Paul Eyre, who accidentally kills an alien and through this becomes transformed.

Phil manages to squeeze in one pun and a sly dig at science fiction writers through his character Leo Queequeg Tincrowdor. It is a simply plotted and quick read but like Phil's best work some ideas and images will stay with you forever, especially in the final part where Phil describes Paul Eyre's flight around Earth after he is transformed into an alien.

All in all a very good read which is just dying to be filmed.

Christocentric Resurrection Devotional
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2002-06-28
The stations of resurrection:
The liturgical press has never failed its readers, at least me, so far. An enlightened methodist minister, of ecumenical heart, retreated in a Cistercian monastery to take us from the stations of the Cross to those of our Lords fellowship in His resurrection.

Methodology:
The seven weekly stations, spaning the fifty holy days have a guiding theme of meditation of the glorified Christ from the empty tomb up to ascencion: a scripture reading, a homily, meditation in three stages; devotion of thought, silence, prayer.

Seven stages:
1. The empty tomb, 2. The Emmaus walk, 3. The upper room ,4. The doubting disciple, 5. On the shore of Tiberias, 6.On the road to Damascus,7. At the feet of the ascending Messiah.

The Emmaus Disciples:
since I was a kid I kept asking my self, what was that something that held Luke and Cleopas eyes from seeing the beloved Master?
Homily: did we not feel ower hearts on fire as he talked with us on the road and explained the scriptures to us?
Prayer:As we plead with you to stay, help us to know that we can never impison you in our transitory cultures and traditions,...
Hymn: Christ is alive! No longer bound to distant years in Palestine, He comes to claim the here and now and conquer every place and time.

By the sea of Tiberias:
Thomas , the doubting disciple again with Nathnael, who once said to philip that nothing good come out of Nazareth hear the Christ asking Peter three times "Simon son of John, do you love me?"
Homily:As the choice was to Peter, so it is to us today. are we for Christ?
Hymn:Be known to us in breaking bread, But do not then depart;Savior abide with us , and spread your table in our heart.

Superb for the mind and soul !

A Gem
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2003-07-17
Author Corns has studied Ohio's Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway for decades, and his passion for the subject shines through in this definitive volume. Hundreds of sharply reproduced black-and-white photographs, thoroughly captioned and most never before published, augment a detail-rich text that brings to life an important and relatively unheralded piece of American railway history.

Train and rolling stock photos predominate, as would be expected, but remarkable images of long-gone stations, engine terminals, yards, and workers also grace the pages.

The W&LE, itself an amalgamation of small companies, was leased to the larger Nickel Plate Road in 1949, and it is at this logical point in the Wheeling's rather tumultuous history that the author concludes his review.

This book is a gem, and holds much of interest for railfans, modelers, historians, and Ohioans alike.

A resource book that lives up to its potential!
Helpful Votes: 21 out of 22 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-21
As I said: A resource book that lives up to its potential! Every book chosen is high-quality (anyone experienced in caring for under-threes will recognize virtually every title). Every activity chosen has developmental--not educational, but developmental--value. The authors avoid the ABCs and 123s for babies and toddlers and focus on what is really important: language exposure, interaction with loving caregivers, and sensory experiences. And the book even lives up to its title. Unlike so many books "for infants and toddlers" that really only serve toddlers, this book offers an equally complete and interesting infant section--what a bonus!

All students deserve DI in their classrooms

This is a must for all educators in the classroom. We are doing a disserve to our students if we are using the old cookie cutter approach with our lessons - you know, one size fits all. Our students are not the same, so why are our lessons? Using these practical, easy to use methods, we can tap into more students learning styles, giving them a greater chance of success. I highly recommend this book. The authors are a wealth of knowledge!

A great tool to get students thinking about their reading!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-11
Excellent product that really has students focus on one skill or strategy at a time for five staight days. I find that following the mini lessons as recommended with a read-a-loud usually takes more than the 10-15 minutes indicated. But it is worth doing the read-a-loud, then think-a-loud, the modeling and then giving the students time to implement it with their own free choice reading materials. The author includes recommendations for the read-a-loud and a script of possible discussions to guide students' understanding of the strategy. Plan ahead though to make sure you have that book or another that works well with the strategy!

I highly recommend that you follow the author's advice and print the bookmarks on colored paper as it adds to the students' appeal. They love guessing and/or requesting the next color! I also make a copy for the overhead to model the writing on my free choice book.

This has become an essential resource tool for me with all my struggling 6th-8th grade students, but would appeal to any and all students!

Great for both the 'green' tourist and the seasoned NYer
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-06
If you think you'll ever find yourself in Manhattan, do us all a favor and buy this map. You don't want to look like a tourist fighting with that huge copy of the NYC subway map that they hand out for free. I'm convinced that the MTA has some sort of deal with the muggers to hand those unnecessarily large maps to mark the tourists.

This is by far the most comprehensive Manhattan map I've seen packed into an easy-to-carry, laminated package. It has all the essentials that would be valuable to the casual visitor or the local yokel who would never admit they don't know where Essex crosses Rivington.

This map was accurate and really helped us get around the island. The laminated finish is the best feature. You can use it over and over, it doesn't tear and is very easy to refold.
