This is an excellent resource for teaching math. It can be used as a review for the summer as another reviewer has mentioned. I used to teach special education and sometimes using Spectrum math workbooks helped students understand a concept when other programs and workbooks would not. As a mother who schools her children at home now we often use Spectrum math workbooks to get the basics down pat before doing some of the 'fun math'.

This is useful book for teaching math. It should be worth considering when looking for a math workbook.

can't say enough...

I'm homeschooling and I could go on the road with the Spectrum books. After trying several different curriculums, I stumbled across these books in the bookstore. They were an answer to prayer. There is an answer key in the back, so I haven't had to haul around a huge teachers edition. These books, all of them (we homeschool a 1st grader and 3rd grader and we use Spectrum Spelling, Writing, Reading, Language Arts, Vocabulary, Phonics, and Math) are exactly what we needed. My first grader LOVES the reading books. We ordered both, the regular Spectrum, and the one written by Mercer Meyer with the Little Critter characters. Childrens books (especially the ones written at her level) are SO expensive, and these reading books come with so many stories, and they have exercises for reading comprehension. I REALLY can't say enough. One thing I'd like to see them do? Add science and social studies/ history and geography to their mix... art and music while we are at it!!

Nothing Better

Spectrum Books were recommended by my child's teacher. Now I can understand why. We home school and these books are great. They self teach and are easy to understand. They are economically priced which is rare in educational books. I find that every Spectrum Book on every subject is equally as great. Not only are they valuable to home schooled kids like mine, they also are great to tutor kids in traditional schools who may need a little help. I will never hesitate to buy any book under the Spectrum name brand. They are tops. However it's my nature to be picky, so here it goes, the only thing I recommend is removing the answers from the back of the book. All the pages have been conveniently perforated. Because if you have a child like mine, he'll discover this before you do and whiz through his assignments without getting any question wrong. I'll be buying these books for years to come. I love them and it will be hard to find anything better.

Essence of communication today
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 19 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-05
The importance of writing today is essential because technology has given the world the opportunity to communicate with the written word via the computer and internet not to mention through out ones education and life. With this in mind it is essential to begin showing children the means for an intelligent tranfer of ones ideas and thoughts. With this series, beginning as soon as possible, you can be assured that your child or student will acquire the essential craft of translating his or her words legibally and meaningfully to others conveying what is meant to be given. I highly recommend the use and instruction of this material.

Lively memory gems with a variety of musical styles
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-06-08
One of the outstanding KidzUp Productions book/audio cassette series "The Learning Beat", Spelling Songs: Language Arts Skills was specifically developed for children ages 6 and older. Young listeners will learn "tips, tricks and techniques" relevant to spelling and language arts such as changing "y" to "I" before adding "er", "est", or "es"; dropping silent "e" before adding "ing"; changing words by adding silent "e"; doubling final consonants before adding endings; and more. The songs offer lively memory gems with a variety of musical styles ranging from pop and country, to rock and rap. Also highly recommended is a companion title in "The Learning Beat" series, Grammar & Punctuation Songs... Both of these titles are ideal for homeschooling, as well as community school curriculum supplementation.

A Wonderful Little Book
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-10
This little book has beautiful illustrations and simple, descriptive text that makes it interesting and fun to read. Although intended as an early reader, my four year old LOVES this book, and I have read it over and over to him. A few days before we found it, we watched a real spider catch a fly in a web, which really made the book come alive for him. In this book, a spider builds a web, catches a fly for her lunch and catches a wasp and releases it. A male spider taps on her web, and we are told that the spiders mate. Later, the spider lays her eggs, and we are told that she will soon die. At the end, her eggs hatch, and the wind carries the tiny babies off to build webs of their own. Not only do children learn about spiders with this book, but they also are presented with the concept that life is a natural cycle. This book would be perfect for first graders who are doing a unit on spiders, or for families who are observing spiders at home.

Amazing insight to a long gone piece of Boston-area history
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-16
I grew up just 5 miles from the former location of NAS Squantum and rode my bike on the old runway as a kid. But I never knew this base had a history that went back to very earliest days of aviation. I also had no idea that the base was the location of a ship yard that built US Navy destoyers. Those are a few of the gems that can be found in this easily read picture book.

Images from NAS Squantum's history are presented, from the aforementioned "gems", through WW2 and the eventual migration to NAS So. Weymouth. This book covers the history of this airfield from the late 1940's until decomissioning in the mid 90's: from the farmland that was eventually converted to patrol base with blimps and finally an airbase with fixed wing and rotor winged aircraft. The size of the blimp hangars, as shown on the cover, is almost beyond belief. Images of the giant hangar's contruction and destruction are detailed. Airshow fans that visited the base during one of the many open houses will recognize many of the scenes and may even see themselves!

A must for any New England or US Navy history buff looking for a peek into a bygone era.

The Story of a Masterpiece of Architecture and Engineering
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-03-19
If "architecture is frozen music" [Goethe] then the magnificent St Pancras buildings must constitute one of J.S.Bach's major concertos.

This is a book for anyone with an interest in world-class architecture, or history, or great engineering. It's probably quite interesting to railway enthusiasts too!

St. Pancras station and its Midland Grand Hotel manage to combine high art and design with a masterpiece of engineering in an incredible, exuberant, completely 'over-the-top' statement of Victorian company confidence. The book explains in an intelligent and entertaining way, why and how it was achieved by the brilliantly innovative engineer William Henry Barlow, and the eminent and sometimes insensitive architect Sir George Gilbert Scott.

"If the Directors and officers of the Midland company had pooled their collective experience with a view to securing a site for their London station that would combine the greatest possible number of difficulties, they could hardly have fixed on anything better than the one they chose at St. Pancras. It was occupied by a canal, a gas-works, an ancient church with a large and crowded graveyard, and some of the most atrocious slums in London; and through it all ran the Fleet River."

Sir John Betjeman reviewed the original, 1968, edition of this book as "readable, learned, and inspiring". More recently, the author and presenter Dan Cruickshank referred to it in his "Story of Britain's Best Buildings" (BBC Books) as "perceptive".

This new edition is revised and enhanced with interesting new photographs and plans, and an additional chapter by architectural historian Robert Thorne about the revival of St. Pancras. The changes somehow manage to make the book better-balanced than the original.

A classic book about a classic building.
