Looking through illusions to better perceive reality

Ralph Strauch's unique background in both mathematics (working as a Senior Mathematician with the Rand corporation) and the Feldenkrais method of body movement, gives THE REALITY ILLUSION a blended perspective of rational thinking and physical intelligence. Strauch suggests exercises to do by yourself and or with a friend to demonstrate the way our physical strength and health are altered as we change the focus of our attention. This book has excellent illustrations throughout, and is an excellent guidebook for examining our forms of perception.

This is a great find, either for a teacher in a classroom setting or a family who wants to broaden their exploration of some fantastic children's literature. The book takes plot lines or ideas from some great kids' books and creates child-friendly recipes to accompany them. Many of these recipes are easy to make in the classroom with a crockpot, toaster oven or microwave. From chocolate moose muffins to accompany "If You Give A Moose a Muffin" to unfried worms to accompany "How to Eat Fried Worms," the smartly-written recipes are a joy in and of themselves! It's like a trip down memory lane of some of the best books from my own childhood, plus it offers me some unique ways to explore these old favorites with my own kids. A real winner!

Anyone interested in national electronic media regulation will find this book an invaluable source of information and analyses on six of the most developed broadcast systems. Although published in 1996, the book is still of great actuality since it includes a detailed discussion on the various developments and future chances of the media in the scope of the work.

Not least with an international opening of the media market and the possibility of unhampered broadcasting of television signals the question arises if the countries concerned have the tendency to regulate in a similar manner or if there are huge differences which would make an international cooperation more difficult. The book, providing a very sophisticated and well-organised comparative analysis, highlights these diverse approaches to many common problems and trends (e.g. how to justify regulation when channels are abundant; the shift from cultural to economic concerns; the vulnerability of regulators to political and industry pressures). From the structural point of view, the study examines first the development and structure of each country's broadcasting system, its organisation, and how it fits into the country's network of political institutions. Specific comparisons are made between Canada, the United States, and Australia, where broadcasting is part of the private sector, and Britain, France, and Germany, where broadcasting is primarily a public service. Examining both current and past programs of supervision in each country and tracing the links between supervisory bodies and larger political, economic systems, the book contributes to a broader sociopolitical understanding of broadcasting regulation in industrial democracies. As such, it serves as a resource for broadcasting and governement professionals, as well as instructors and students with an interest in broadcasting regulation an international communication.

A sequel 17 years in the making.

D. E Bullis, better known to his friends as Deb, has succeeded where most authors fail. Taking seventeen years to pen a sequel to his 1931 work, "Bleaching and dyeing Royal Ann cherries for maraschino or fruit salad use", Deb wows us with his appropriately, and self-explanatorily titled, "Relationship of maturing and weathering to yield and quality of peppermint oil," and does so in even fewer pages than his freshman effort.

How many authors actually produce a sequel shorter than the original? Take that, J.K. Rowling! And no slipshod 500 pages whipped out in a year, no sir. Deb spent over a year penning each page, and it must show. How easily such a publication could have run 20, 30, even 40 pages. Good show, Deb. Five Stars!! And a place on my wish list of books of unknown bindings.

This is not a coffee table picture book even though the photography is very good. This book is far more than that. It is a very sympathetic, well researched and superbly evocative pictorial and architectural history of the British in the Hill Stations of India. It is the work of a man who understands thoroughly his country and its history and who can relate its past and its relationship with the present without fear, favour or prejudice. Interwoven with humour and vignettes of the society of The Raj this is a well balanced, informative and most enjoyable book. I recommend it to all who care for India and its fascinating history.
