The Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal was the last of the great passenger railway stations built in the United States, opening in 1939. Bill Bradley has prepared a significant work in text and illustrations which includes information on predecessor depots, the political ramblings surrounding the site selection and plans, and the celebration of the opening of this great station. Model railroaders will find ample photos and track plans to help them recreate the station. Santa Fe, Southern Pacific, and Union Pacific fans will delight at the photos of their favorite consists. Paper, 120 pages.

This book appeared as an Avalon hardcover western before Leisure Westerns issued it earlier this spring in mass market paperback as one of their club selections.

The book, as all Avalon westerns I've read, is a very interesting book with likable characters moving though a very engaging plot. Attempting to get the right of approval from a western town to establish a stagecoach way station, a couple of men run into real trouble when one is accused of a killing he did not commit. Less than 24 hours after reaching town they must prove all innocence, fortunately one of the town elders, a blacksmith by trade, is a friend and aids them to both track a killer and band of rustlers.

The book is equally a western and mystery, a hard combination to beat. An earlier book had these same main characters so this may be possibly part of a series. Whether that be true or not, if this book serves as any indication, then it will be a worth while series.

Just settle back and enjoy this one: small town Texas panhandle folks, cattle rustlers, Apache Indians, and 'got your back to the death friends'. An easy book with which to enjoy a few western escape hours.

Recommended if you enjoy a good western.

This is a fabulous book well worth the investment. For children who have already had an introduction to fractions, this reviews some basics so that children who didn't get it the first time around have another chance, while children who did get it the first time aren't bored because the ways in which basic fractions are reviewed are interesting and novel. Lots of hands-on activities and problem-solving. After one math class, my students said it was the best math lesson ever because we played games the whole time. It's easy to be a better math teacher with this book.

Excellent for those of us who learned the algorithm but either did not learn to make sense of the division and multiplication of fractions or do not quite know how to explain it. Marilyn Burn's strategies allow students to make sense of these "difficult concepts."

I may be biased, because it's about my family, but it is a wonderful story. It is so interesting, because in this day and age when we can have anything we want at a touch of a button, my Great Uncle and my Grandfather had a unique life and though it had it's ups and downs, I believe it made them the wonderful, caring people they are today.

I have looked everywhere for materials to help me teach my 11th graders the novels that are required, but still meet the content standards for Florida. Everything from the vocabulary activities to the post-reading activites are great. I would recommend this guide to all teachers--much better than Teacher Created Materials.

I am homeschooling a first grader and we are so enjoying this book and making the "pockets" and filling them with projects! For each of the Caldecott winner books that you read, there is a section with art and crafty little assignments you do to add to each pocket. My 5 year old is quite proud of each new addition.

This book is good for in the classroom as well as to send home with the students to practice at home. The kids can trace and write words that could be common in kinder level writing.

I believe this book is expertly researched and should be part of everyone's collection of outdoor guides.
Once the most advanced means of fire detection, the fire-protection lookout towers built and manned in the 1900's in Washington State are now historic sites and an intrinsic part of the heritage of the Northwest and its people.. This book is a complete history of the lookouts and tribute to the people who often endured challenging conditions, from loneliness to forbidding weather, while serving as firewatchers.
