Stations Books

As the parent of my now 18-month-old daughter, I find this book to be a valuable resource in understanding infant development. Even though it is designed to help teachers build a curriculum for infants from birth to 18 months, I found the activities, the theoretical discussions and the assessment tools to be also very useful in a parent-child environment. Each chapter is content-based (me, Mommies and Daddies, Big and Little, Cars, Trucks and Trains. etc.) and provides various ideas to promote movement, literacy, music, sensory/art and curiosity. My daughter, my husband and I had tremendous fun implementing these ideas indoors and outdoors. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

I am in charge of our preschool- First grade children's church and was trying to find some lessons for the teacher's to use. I ordered this book and was pleased with it's organization and approach to teaching the lessons. Each lesson starts with a story and then gives 5 0r 6 activities to go along with the main idea(scripture quote) of the story. I am so thrilled with it that I am ordering the other books in this series.

I am extremely pleased with this book. Of all the math-centers books I have, I keep coming back to this one. (As well as the K-1 version, which I also highly recommend.) The centers are easy to set up and don't take any weird, hard-to-find materials. Also, they are not very complicated so my students understand how to do them after me showing them just once. The centers are also really relevant-- relating perfectly to the standards I teach. The students enjoy the hands-on math action and I see how much it helps the students get a deeper understanding. I highly recommend this book!

Calling all NASA fans! We had this book handy the day the International Space Station was in the news... one of over 150 titles in the "Let's Read-and-Find-Out Science" series that we own and use constantly! Begun in the 1960s, this series is just perfect when you want to explore a specific topic. Books about the different phases of the moon, the ways of ants, ladybugs, gravity, your skeleton.... all kinds of timeless books with timeless information presented in a living way! But what about the books about rockets and sattelites? Boy, are they outdated! That is why I was so delighted with this great new title. Generous oversized format with LOTS of detail.

The pictures are educational. Elementary school students love to color the pictures as a reward for finishing early. Excellent time filler for the harried teacher.

Cheryl Pallant's "Into Stillness" is a performance, something to be experienced rather than merely read. She uses language like a jazz musician uses scales, as a foundation, a set of rules to be broken so that the notes (or words) can be rearranged in unique, surprising ways. Her verbal virtuosity is akin to that of saxophonist Paul Gonsalves, whose solo during "Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue" at the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival revived the fortunes of Duke Ellington's band. But what Pallant gives life to is our awareness of the power, beauty, and joy of language.

I spent two years in Iowa, and I learned more from this little book, geared toward pre-teens, than I did when I was there. Maybe that says a lot about my powers of observation, but, in reality, is says a lot about the construction and writing of this book. "The Land Where the Tall Corn Grows" is given its full due here.

The "Portrait of America" series is a wonderful introduction for pre-teens to the 50 states and to the places and events that shaped the history of the United States. This "Iowa" installment is particularly good. The book is broken down into sections like "History", "Culture", "Economy" etc., and each section is thoughtfully written and edited. The "History" section is especially good and is very inclusive.

This book, as well as the entire "Portrait of America" series, will prove to be a valuable teaching tool to all primary school educators.

I have often looked for a book that will help my children and I and their friends adjust to a friend moving away. Being in the Navy for five years and living in the transient world that we do we've had to say goodbye so many times to our friends. It is always so hard. Ira Says Goodbye touched my kids and me. It covered all the emotions everyone feels when a special neighbor and friend has to leave (or we do). My three and four year olds and I really enjoy reading Ira Says Goodbye. It is very sweet and I am ordering two more for far-away friends.
