Classic SF book still worth your time

It's hard to believe mine is only the second review of this wonderful SF classic. The book combines a fascinating character with a great plot to produce one of the best examples of the alien contact genre. But unlike Murray Leinster's First Contact, or other such famous alien contact stories, this one has an unlikely protagonist and an unlikely setting. The whole story is infused with Simak's trademark homey atmosphere and rural setting, which at first seems at odds with a typical science fiction story, but Simak was far from your typical S-F writer. It's a unique combination of story elements and just has a special charm and appeal no other writer could create but Simak. As the Wikipedia article on Simak says, "A crusty individualistic backwoodsman character literally comes with the territory, the best example being Hiram Taine, the protagonist of "The Big Front Yard."" Simak was one of the greats of the Golden Age of Science Fiction, and beyond, and he is certainly missed, but his work lives on in the hearts and minds of his fans.

An old, old friend....

Whenever I travel through the hills of SW Wisconsin I keep an eye open for Enoch Wallace's house. Simak has me convinced that it, and its owner, must be real. You cannot read this book without feeling that Enoch is an old, old friend. There is something about this 19th century man's lonely vigil through the centuries that seems right. Only a person so completely human could treat alien visitors with such unstinting hospitality- and humanity. They are just "folks", a might peculiar, but still folks. I can also believe that the old timers back in the hills would not give him up to outsiders if he did exist- not if he minded his own business, not if he belonged there.

This product is the perfect resource for creating a school to home connection. Each weekly lesson includes a brief letter to parents explaining the skill used in the completion of the assignment. Parent and child work together-reading and responding to the passage. It is skill-building for the student and provides parents with insight into the skills and strategies their child needs in order to become a better reader.

We used this as part of our weekly reading homework. Children and parents loved it. They read the text each night for three nights then got the question sheet on the fourth night for homework. The stories are interesting and engaging. The letters to parents helped guide the parents. Awesome book!

Looking over the comprehension books, I felt the reading passages were grade level appropriate. Sometimes it will be listed as 2nd or 1st and be too difficult or easy. These would have pleased Goldilocks.

great idea to involve parents and improve reading skills

This has been a great resource to me as a First Grade Teacher. The book is mostly ready to copy printables. Each week, you make photocopies for the students of the two pages of homework. One page is a short story with illustrations, and the other page has questions or a quick activity, along with a note to parents. I have found these to be very helpful in building comprehension and fluency skills. I also think that it has been good for the parents of my students because they have more direction, as far as what they can do to help their child read. Each assignment focuses on a different skill (cause and effect, punctuation, sequence of events, etc.), and the parent note really helps to inform and guide parents through the homework as they help their child. I also like that the homework is due at the end of the week, so parents can pick which night is more convenient to help their child with the homework.
Overall I am very pleased with this resource.

I loved this book because they had a lot of fun and had a lot of
details and it was very interest and funny to me.

A delightful fantasy rewrite of pre-history

In "What Happened to Patrick's Dinosaurs" the author takes us on a pleasant romp through the imagination of a dinosaur lover. Patrick tells his brother Hank of the times when Dinosaurs did all the work for their beloved humans, making them cars, roads, and houses. Although his brother Hank tries to correct and question Patrick, Patrick has an answer for everything, logical and intreguing.

The illustrations in the book are a delight as well. From cloud formations and star contellations in the shape of dinasaurs, to pictures of dinosaurs wearing clown make-up to put on a show.

Our body/muscles store our traumas even when we think that our conscious mind forgets. Hurts, abuses, and accidents all remain in our body/muscles. One may be in psychotherapy or counseling for months or years and think that he/she is over the trauma; but when therapeutic touch, as described by Dr. Ford, is applied to the body old traumas resurface. In this book Dr. Ford effectively melds techniques and therapies of the body/mind which he has named somatosynthesis. His descriptions of his sessions with patients are easily understood. The format of the book is a chapter describing patients sessions, alternating with a chapter devoted to the rationale which furthers the reader's knowledge and understanding of integrating body work, or therapeutic touch, with mind therapy. The patient usually has several sessions with Dr. Ford which he calls "the journey". Once the journey is completed, the patient is released and relieved of the trauma causing problems and he/she can function without restrictions or fears in life. This book is written including case studies, theories, and useful techniquers in a way that will excite and stimulate the reader.

Great for tutoring

As a tutor I have used this book and this series for over 10 years with ESL and other students from 5th grade through high school. The short, easy lessons provide a great introduction to these important parts of language. They do not require much "homework" time to do, so students willingly do one a week. I recommend this series for tutors and teachers.

Great teaching aid.

Reviews 30 prefixes. Each prefix is given two pages. A list of example words with the prefix and a picture to go with one of the words (i.e. antibiotic and a picture of a pill bottle with pills around it). Great for visual learners. The 2nd page is a review of the words and some fill in the blank. Two sister books about more prefixes and roots are Word Strength and Word Wisel.

Our daughter is obsessed with this book! The binding is kind of crappy and fell apart quickly, so we had it spiral bound. This was a worthwhile investment, as our kid can't get enough of this book.

Great Animal Alphabet

Review Date: 2006-06-01
What a fantastic A-Z book. There are many of this type around but this is among the best I've found. First of all, the amazing illustrations are bold, colorful and contemporary. The layout is superb pairing a simple, large letter pair (upper and lower case) with the name of the animal in a slightly smaller font on the one side with the animal counterpart on the next. Some of the featured animals are common (horse, sheep, lion, etc.) and some are more obscure(uakari, zorilla)but a guide to the less familiar is offered at the back. It is a bit heavy on the birds (9 letters are dedicated to our feathered friends) but this complaint is very minor given the quality and educational value of this book. Most definitely recommended.

I love the pictures and very simple "story". The additional information on each page is great depending on age of child and interest and can start other discussions as well. This book will be used in my kindergarten classroom but I have also shared it with my grandson who is 3 years old and he became very excited by the pictures and initiated his own treasure hunt of yellow things in my home.
