A Beautiful Book

This is a beautiful book. It is beautiful to look at, it is beautiful to read. The words have a symbiotic relationship with the illustrations, and the illustrations with the words. Together they tell a story that in lesser hands would be just another one of those "we built a bigger better longer something" book, but in the capable hands of the writer and designer they tell the story of Grand Central Terminal - which is basically a story of engineering and city planning - as if they were witnessing the miracle of birth, which, of course, they were. We gave the book to a ten-year old girl who lives next door. She shyly took it, opened it, looked at it, thanked us, and disappeared with it.

great building; great book

As this interesting new book tells us, there is a lot more to Grand Central Terminal than the present building. The story behind the Terminal is fascinating, and it's told here in a compelling, accessible fashion that both competent young readers and adults can enjoy. Author has a warm, chatty style that works well for the story, which gets complex at times. Book is gorgeous to look at as well--stunning photos, although too bad some are so small. Nice maps, time line, glossary, etc. Overall, extremely informative and highly recommended.

I ordered a few books similar to this one but I am most impressed with this book. The activities seem realistic to do even with a larger number of children. You don't need a bunch of complicated equipment either. Some games require beanbags, balls, hoola-hoops, jump ropes, or nothing at all. Some games are the traditional ones like Duck, Duck, Goose, Red Light, Green Light, and Hot Potato but are modified a little bit to keep all the children engaged. The book is organized nicely and the instructions for each game is simple and easy to understand. I am looking forward to implementing these activities in my classroom.

Review from the U.S. Life Saving Service Heritage Association:
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-03
It doesn't take the Coast Guard to know the Coast Guard, but sometimes the inside knowledge and access helps the cause. Authors Stacy and Virginia Thomas met in the Coast Guard while both serving at Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, and got married at one of the lighthouse of which they write in Guarding Door County. Their writing style in the book is professional and precise, their words carefully chosend to show respect for their service and the men and women who served before them.
The authors have broken the book down geographically, assigning themselves southern, northern and island blocks of lighthouses. Life-saving stations, as there are only three in the county (Sturgeon Bay Canal, Bailey's Harbor and Plum Island) are covered in one extensive chapter. And as there are only twelve historic lighthouses on the peninsula as well, they also receive lengthy coverage in the book, with multiple images of each lighthouse through time.
An added bonus to this book is the authors' treatment of their final full chapter, a primer on "Current Events: Preservation and Tourism" of Coast Guard heritage on the peninsula. Guarding Door County, therefore, goes beyond the history to the story of the present day, allowing those folks who go to (or in many cases, return to) the peninsula the opportunity to carry this book with them as a travel aid.

Great book, great gift, especially if you've been to Door County!

Guarding Door County is another wonderful addition to Arcadia's titles. The book gives a very good overview of the U.S. Coast Guard which explains how lighthouses and life-saving stations became part of the organization. Each picture has detailed captions that bring the stories to life. I liked how the authors included a final chapter on preservation and tourism to update the reader on what was currently happening to the structures. Finally, the appendix really helped me understand how Fresnel lenses worked. Overall, I loved looking at the historical photos and learning more about the lighthouses and life-saving stations in Door County.

This is a great resource for a large classroom or a small homeschool. I love the activity to write to a "chocolate factory". I used this book in a private school that I taught at a few years ago and ordered it this year for my own homeschool.

I used this literature guide with my 6th grade English class. I found it to be a great help in really making the book a great joy for the students. The activities that were included in the book were easy to accomplish in one period and with basic materials.

A couple of my favorite activities from the book were "Create Your Own Golden Ticket" and "Writing a letter to a candy company" (Addresses for 5 different companies were given.) The kids wrote their letters and received some free things in the mail within a few weeks.

This book also comes with Chocoholic Recipes and Unit Tests. I found it to be a great companion for any teacher reading "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory".

Test Prep Through Great Literature!

Although I had never heard of this author or publisher, I took a chance and cannot be more excited about the quality of materials! There is everything in this book! From a simple biography plus reading questions about Shakespeare, an Anticipation/Reaction guide (which the kids loved!), literary terms to know (and their definitions), lessons on iambic pentameter and the sonnet form, a (doable) vocabulary list, scene guides for tracking the action and plot of the play, focus activities for each act, vocabulary exercises, test preparation, quizzes for each act (including vocabulary quizzes!), a final test, a summary of the play act by act, and pre-reading and post-reading activities! This is by far the most valuable guide I have ever seen for teaching high school students the complicated and often intimidating world of Shakespeare. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I cannot express enough how valuable this literature guide is. I have been teaching for over ten years now, and I have NEVER found a piece of gold like this! Whether you are a new teacher or an experienced pro, you want to have a life. This guide has everything I need to teach Hamlet--and more. Mrs. Bowers has done all the work for me. It begins with an author biography and questions to go along with the biography, pre-reading activities to choose from, vocabulary list (in bite-size pieces!), "Standards Focus" activities which specifically focus on the content standards for 11th and 12th grade. It then has vocabulary activities, fun activities to review the vocab, quizzes, a test, and other ideas for testing. With all this, I can sit back and acutally teach for a change.

Lookout towers used to be places where rangers could view the forests and spot any problems. Today, they are open to anyone who wishes to visit them. "Hiking North Carolina's Lookout Towers" is a guide for hikers who want to put a destination into their hikes that ends with a great view of the surrounding landscape. An ideal pick for any hiking enthusiast, "Hiking North Carolina's Lookout Towers" is highly recommended for community library travel collections.

Peter Barr has done an outstanding job in combining fire lookout towers, their history, and their current status along with the traditional hiking information. Lots of maps and photos! Peter brings out the plight of the abandoned historic structures and makes a plea for help in saving them! This is a great book for anyone hiking in Western North Carolina or anyone wanting to go there. Even if you hadn't particularly wanted to go there, if you're interested in lookouts and hiking, "Hiking North Carolina's Lookout Towers" will make you want to! A must for fire lookout enthusiasts or anyone interested in learning more about them!

How to Forgive When You Don't Know How

The Key to Peace
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2001-07-08
I have read this book over ten times. It awakened me to the power of forgiveness. The book starts off with a definition that says forgiveness is completed when the memory of the incident no longer carries an emotional charge.

The book explains all the myths of forgiveness, myths that many people believe are true. I learned that "holding resentment requires energy that would produce more joy if directed elsewhere." The redirection of this energy has been found to diminish serious health problems. Forgiveness affirms, strengthens, and frees us from the hatred that eats away at our bodies. To help the reader understand this there are many forgiveness stories. The authors explain the stages of forgiveness as well as some processes for forgiving.

Before I read this book I didn't know any of this. To me forgiveness was just a compromise to end a fight. And where deep wounds are concerned forgiveness was never in the picture. If you think the way I used to I recommend that you read this book. It is short, clear, concise, and easily understandable. The book will bring joy to your life and the lives of the people around you as it did to me. Read it, again and again.

Book is Out of Print BUT Bishop's OTHER BOOK IS JUST AS GOOD

I realize that some Amazon.com customers would really like to order this book; however, you can NOT get it b/c it is out of print, and it may be hard to find a used copy. But not to worry! Jacqui Bishop (same author of this book) actually wrote another book that covers the topic of Forgiveness in an even better format than this book. I have thoroughly read BOTH books and love them both.

The book title is: "How to Love Yourself When You Don't Know How" I HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK IF YOU WANT TO LEARN HOW TO FORGIVE, and is EVEN BETTER than "How to Forgive When You Don't Know How." It is in print and can be bought from Amazon.com for a very reasonable price of $13. Small price to pay for the healing and peace of mind the book has to offer.

I do highly highly recommend the book "How to Forgive When You Don't Know How", as I was able to get a used copy of this book, and it did change my life. But it is currently out of print, so please do get "How to Love Yourself When You Don't Know How"

I have read many authors on Forgiveness, but none of them are as comprehensive and make sense as Jacqui Bishop. Her books are incredible.

If you are into healing your life, I also recommend:
1) "Reclaiming Your Life" by Jean Jenson
2) "Drama of the Gifted Child" by Alice Miller
3) "Dark Side of the Light Chasers" by Debbie Ford

All of these books have been instrumental in healing my life. But Jacqui Bishop is a great place to start.

Good luck in your journey!!!!
