My first Military SCIFI novel

I first read this one almost 25 years ago at the young age of 12. I picked it up from a garage sale bin and was introduced to a genre that, now, nearing 40, I still can't get enough of. The story is about a desperate last stand to hold open a communications point for the Earth fleet. The characters are wounded, battle weary warriors who are resigned to their fate. In this world, modern medicine can prevent the most egregiously wounded sailors from dying, but not from suffering, either the pain or the mental anguish of what they have endured.

I loved the narrative, and I must have read it over a dozen times. Meredith draws you in. You want them to survive, even though you know that they won't. In the end, you come to the realization that death is a victory for these characters, as well as the fulfillment of their mission.

In my opinion, it is a must read for those who enjoy good, hard Military Science Fiction.

I wish they had a similar book for Science. Because I liked the Basic Math book so much, I bought their Take It To Your Seat Science Centers Grade 1-2 book. It was a disappointment. But, the Math book is a great tool. My daughter learnt a lot; the book was easy to follow. I plan to use their Basic Math Grade 2 book too. It helps me teach my daughter through such books because it provides the structure and methodical approach.. Highly recommend it.

I love Evan Moor products. As a Kindergarten teacher, I am always looking for resources that provide enrichment skills to those students in my classroom who are working about grade level. This product provide both on-level and enrichment learning experiences for my students. Also, my students enjoy them! The assessments provided are also very good.

Super resource for classroom teachers. This book is organized by strand from Number and Operations to Probability and contains timed math tests, class record sheet, test answer forms and incentive award printables. The perfect book to support your Provincial or State math curriculum.

Great summer skills review!

Bought this book for my daughter to review/reinforce math skills during the summer. The pages are visually appealing and the puzzles give completing the math problems "a point" (her words). This book assumes that the student has had 6th grade math, as there are only problems to solve, no explanations or processes given.

Great book for Batman fans!

Santa brought this one this year and is it the hit in our house! We particularly love the comic drawing of Batman in this series - the best body builder in the world fails to compare with the physique of this Batman! The Riddler gets the blame for a crime he didn't commit in this feature, and they let him out of Arkum Assylum to help them find the boy who has been kidnapped. However, the Riddler does escape and eventually does kidnap the missing boy. But, Batman is at his best with the dry wit and the master science mind that he has, and figures out the clues the Riddler leaves behind. Great, great story and a wonderful way to not only get your child to read, but to realize how important math and science are - especially to Batman! Highly recommend!

Early Chapter Book with Comic Book Pictures
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-28
Please note: this is NOT a graphic novel! This is an early reader (Scholastic Level 3) with chapters and regular printed page words. The illustrations appear to be from comic books and include dialog bubbles and storyline trailers, but don't pick this up expecting a comic book.

My son, a huge Batman fan, loves this book and other books of this series. ("The Copycat Crime" is the second in the series, but I have not yet encountered anything that would require the books to be read in sequence.) This villain in this book is The Riddler, who seems to have kidnapped a boy despite being in prison.

The story is simple to fit it into 39 pages (the 40th page is devoted to vocabulary words), but quite well done and genuinely interesting despite its Easy Reader status.

The best compliment my son has given it is, "I really like this book even though it's supposed to be good for me!"

I thought this book was enjoyable to read and important in its information about an endangered species. It shows respect for whales and conveys the awesomeness of the blue whale, the largest animal on earth. The illustrations were especially beautiful and made me want to swim underwater.

A superbly written children's picturebook

Big Blue by Shelley Gill is a superbly written children's picturebook about Kye, a young girl who studies facts about whales, dreams with whales, and yearns to experience whales close up. At last Kye has the opportunity to outfit herself with underwater gear and see a magnificent blue whale in person. Soothing illustrations by Ann Barrow prominently featuring the color blue add a resonant depth to this charming and avidly recommended picturebook story.

This book is a great historic full of history and triumph that has made radio/ disc jockey's /music and players what it is today. It allows you to understand and feel what Black muscians had to go through to be noticed and recognized. I recommend all muscians to read this and appreciate the very men and women that have certainly paved the way into the new Millienium. A good read with great pictures.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I have it on my coffee table for everyone to see. The book tells you all about the first black Disc Jockey in Chicago all the way up to the mid 60's. I enjoyed the pictures which also told their own story as well.

This product is great. We have used it on our kids academic bowl radio program. With such a wide variety of subjects, the program certainly prompts our students to THINK. It's great to have a useful entertainment product that does not require batteries.

My son does not particularly enjoy reading himself, but this book series is one that he happily read. I highly recommend for any child that is interested in animals and some of the gross and interesting things that they do. We went to the zoo after reading this series too and my son had a ball seeing some of the animals from this series. He thinks these books are cool.

Can't say enough!

Review Date: 2008-02-26
I love this book (what else can I say?)! Each lesson has different reinforcement tools to help your child remember spelling rules. The lists are age-appropriate; and while challenging, this book has proven to be the only one I've used that has given my child a sense of success in spelling (not his strong suit to begin with).

My only regret is that I didn't find this book until 3rd grade!

Finally a "Spelling Book" that Fits!

Review Date: 2007-05-30
My school did away with the traditional spelling books last year and we have been creating every activity and homework piece this year. It has been a lot of work with few things being fun and often tedious. I piloted this book for three weeks with my students and they welcomed the change. They liked the varied activities and the challenges it provided. As the teacher, I like the natural progression of the lists. It fits in with my language arts curriculum with ease. It begins with simple vowel sounds and moves to the more complex then adding higher level spelling patterns third graders need to know. I can't wait to begin my school year next year so I can use it again.
