I enjoyed this book immensely, but probably for the wrong reasons. The book is a bit chewy in places, but stick with it, as it's surprisingly enjoyable on it's own merits. On a more selfish, sadistic note, I had been mecilessly bludgeoned on a regulary basis by a work colleague, a second generation descendant of the Emerald Isle, with tales of Celtic martyrdom and Anglo tyranny, and none of which I felt I had the right to dispute. Then I read the book. After ten minutes of lively debate, challenging all he knew as 'fact', he has not spoken to me since. No-one had ever shut him up before. Heaven. But back to the point, I found this to be a rather good read.

R. F. "Roy" Foster author of 'W. B. Yeats: The Apprentice Mage,' 'Charles Stewart Parnell: The Man and His Family' and 'Modern Ireland,' has written this experience and interpetation into Irish history and literature. He does a fine job of it. His bravery in massacring every sacred Irish cow as one would have fun reading it. It leaves you with a warm, passionate, giggly feeling. It's entertainingly brilliant look at the past and present Ireland. I particularly love the chapters and passages on Theme-parks & Histories (with some warning from Foster on expliotation); the chapters on Yeats; When the Newspapers Have Forgotten Me: Yeats, Obituarists and Irishness; Selling Irish Childhoods: Frank McCourt & Gerry Adams; and, Remembering 1798. They're totally smothered in clichés and lots of traditional tidbits of fond or fatal memories, known to some as the Irish experience.

Foster cleverly works moments of Ireland's past into narratives of Irish culture on myth, folklore, ghost stories and romance. The result is from a varied interpetation of opinionated and right down funny interlinking essays. In Theme-parks and Histories-Foster writes of the Irish are to remember or commemorate anything. It is worth remembering the upward curve of Irish cultural achievement-referring to W. B. Yeats, Hugh Leonard, Ezra Pound, Cashel Heritage Society and the 2,000-acre Famine Theme Park in Knockfierna Hill west of Limerick. Irish history, the most distinctive achievement for it. His suggestion to form a monument to Amnesia and forget where they put it. As a historian he would be shocked, but as an Irishman he would be attracted to the idea. Foster shows no mercy on his view of manipulating Irish history on political places and Irish poverty and oppression as a commerically packaged heritage park. His exploration of Yeats' authority of the Irish story's fitting moments as the voice of his Ireland countrymen.

Foster leaves teeth-marked criticism of Frank McCourt (Angela's Ashes) and Gerry Adams and their devil may care attittude of taking hostages for fortune. Transcending into the bestsellerdom of Irish childhoods. Simply a technique of marketing where Irish version brag and whimper about the woes of their early years' experience. I find this to be an entertaining reading. In some places a bit wordy, but good telling of Irish culture. You may hate or love it. But, if your interest is in Irish history and literature it's quite essential.

Irish people of all persuasions and in all walks of life have developed a talent for building up a national history to their liking and drawing conclusions from it. Roy Foster's essays are about some of the ways in which Ireland's history has been interpreted, embroidered, exploited and packaged. I think everyone will agree there are cogent reasons for preserving the distinction between history and "national fiction". Ultimately, poor history makes poor propaganda, and propaganda in any case is a shabby use to put something as precious as a nation's history. This book is essential reading for people with an interest in Ireland. (I also recommend strongly the same author's earlier "Modern Ireland 1600-1972".)

This book ought to be on the shelf of anyone with an interest in Irish history. Foster has done an excellent job at making his points about the various 'uses' that history in Ireland has been employed for. From downright propaganda to 'memoirs' masquerading as vague truths he unleashes the power of clear thinking and valid sources. For so long Irish history has been treated as 'story' and this book attempts and succeeds in telling the difference. It is so refreshing to see something sensible in print! It is a great source book or reference and could also be read by delving into the different subjects in the index. I would recommend this for all who are involved in getting to know the real history of Ireland and the Irish and how some Irish 'history' came to be written in the first place.

Porter's tongue-in-cheek treatment of the marketing of Ireland is refreshing after an avalanche of Irish hype came from unscrupulous little publishers.The Disneynification of Ireland ,apparently propelled by American ad agencies for the Irish Tourist Board,is treated by Porter correctly as hype to snare innocent Irish-Americans.Porter gets almost every hilarious Irish twist of recent decades in this collection of exposes, including the hilarious, almost unbelievable marketing of the potato famine in Disney-like theme parks.Unfortunately, he closed his collection of revionist chapters without pointing to the biggest Irish hype of all -the invention and collapse of " The Celtic Tiger", based on runaway inflation and a Dublin stock market bubble that aped the rise and fall of America's Nasdaq.Foster's book is a must if you wish a clearer view of the Irish .

I just love the Images of America series. I have spent pretty much my whole life in the Groton, CT area, and have all the books about Groton and the surrounding towns. So, I was just THRILLED when I saw a historic 'Images..' book about the Groton/New London Naval Submarine Base. This base has been at the center of my entire life. My father served on subs for 20 years, my step-father for 22 years, and my husband is currently a Lieutenant Commander stationed in Groton on subs as well.

My dad managed to spend 18 of his 20 years in Groton, so the subase became a second home to me...it's so cool to see photos of the base in it's early days, and to actually see the growth and expansion of the base through pictures. I learned so much about the whole facility, and now look at certain buildings and areas with a whole new outlook. I know what used to be in places, and things that were torn down so newer buildings could be erected. If you have any ties to this base, I DEFINITELY recommend this book. Even if your not overly interested in the history, the photos alone are worth buying the book for. Very, very interesting.

Arcadia's Images of America series of books are beautiful collections of photographs centered around a single subject. Here they've given this treatment to the home of American submarines, the base at New London, CT. As is usual in these books, they start with the first pictures available (which probably came from before it was a base at all), through the initial uses of the base, i.e. a coaling station for the Navy, and the first submarines.

The first was the USS Moccasin (SS-5), built in 1903 and in New London shortly after that. In 1916 it became the Submarine Base, it had a flotilla of subs being used in World War I. Gradually it grew to include the school that by World War II was producing the crews to take the war to the Japanese.

As usual, I find it difficult to see where they could have found all the photographs reproduced in this book. The normal layout is two pictures per page, so there are probably a couple of hundred pictures in this little book. It's a fascinating book.

Bishop beautifully captured the history of the New London Subase in such a way that I felt as through I'd just browsed through photographs stored in my grandfather's old military footlocker! I enjoyed reading the factual and interesting captions under the chronologically arranged photos. It was refreshing to read a historic depiction (of the subase) that maintained a personal and intimate look into the faces and places that shaped the "submarine capitol of the world".

I am a submarine fan and live near the Naval Submarine Base New London, in Groton, CT. The base has a long 137 year history, the first submarines having come from our area of Connecticut. It is home to many of our U. S. submarines, the Submarine Force Museum and the Naval Submarine School. Often as I drive by the base, I wonder what it looks like inside. So when a recent newspaper article mentioned this book. I decided to get a copy. This is the first book I have seen with so many old photos of the base and old submarines. I enjoyed it and the look back in time it provided. I was amazed to see how the base came into being and its evolution from a rural site in 1868 to the home of the sub base and school it is today.

Photos of the old submarines as well as the old wooden buildings that were there years ago are fascinating. There are maps included that show the base in 1868, 1915, 1919, 1944 and 1988. These maps really help place the old and new buildings and show how the base expanded. This book is a true history lesson. It would interest anyone who was ever stationed at the base, submarine aficionados, World War II history buffs, and folks like me, who just wondered about the base.

Born in New London 76 years ago while Daddy was attending Submarine School, returning in 1937 while my father was in charge of the landmark submarine escape training tower standing 100++ feet tall on the base waterfront and then taking command of a locally built and one of the first WWII famed fleet subs, and then returning a third time to attend "Sub School" myself, I feel kind of close to "The Base!" And immensely relieved that it was spared the ignominy of being shut down recently by a somewhat ignorant decision of the Dept of Defense. This book, rushed to completion to help influence the reviewing committee, is excellent, a superb photographic compendium of the cradle of the superb US Submarine Force. The contribution of this Force and this Base to victory in first the Pacific WWII and then the Cold War is immeasurable. Author David Bishop, intimately familiar by both profession and interest in Sub Base, New London, has compiled a photographic essay that is to be treasured by all proud wearers of the twin dolphins (the submariner's qualification insignia) as well as the vast number to whom submarines and submariners are fascinating subjects. Well done!

Yes, shortwave radio still exists. Hundreds of millions of people across the globe rely on it daily for their news and information. Any well rounded news freak, travel junkie or culture hound should own one. Maybe for use occasionally, maybe for use while travelling, or maybe, like many of us, you listen daily. If you own a shortwave (world band) radio and want to make the most use out of it, you must own this book. Whether at home with your radio, or travelling, it is the key to unlocking the potential of shortwave. The schedule information for stations worldwide is as complete and current as you can find anywhere. The reviews of shortwave radios are thorough and will make sense to the beginner or the advanced listener, and infused with enough humor to keep the material interesting, even if you aren't shopping for a new one. Lastly, the theme for each yearly edition changes and while the 2004 edition isn't quite as in-depth, topically, as last year's (2003), the book is an interesting read even if you don't yet own a shortwave radio. It will probably inspire you to buy one.

This is the best book to get if you are into SW. reviews of radios, addresses, guides to what to listen to according to time, country, language, and frequency (for when you find a station but have no idea what you are listening to). This is the best money you will spend if you want to explore SW.
Shortwave is great for listening to news. BBC, Radio Canada, Voice of America (paid by your tax dollars) all are worth listening to. I am less interested in the overwhelming amount of propaganda and religious programming (just how many world wide gospel broadcasts do we need?) that is on Shortwave. SHortwave radios are also great because they usually are well made an d will pull in more FM and AM stations.

Since the early days of radio, shortwave radio has been a mystery to many potential listeners. There are many factors in getting involved in this fascinating hobby. You will need a receiver, an antenna, a list of broadcasting stations, their frequencies and time schedules and an understanding of how radio signals move through and bounce off of the atmosphere and earth. Quite a daunting task for the shortwave radio novice. Becoming a shortwave radio listener (SWL) has become much easier and more pleasurable with Lawrence Magne's "Passport to World Band Radio" (I'm not sure if Magne's group coined the phrase "World Band Radio" or not but the phrase is used interchangeably with "shortwave radio").

Just after the end of World War II "The World Radio and TV Handbook (WRTH) began publishing. It has evolved into a huge reference of world radio. Nearly every broadcasting station around the globe is listed with their schedules. It is a required reference work for hard core enthusiasts (DX'ers) who cherish pulling in weak and low powered stations. The WRTH is a bit much for the casual to hobbyist-level SWL. In 1985 the first "Passport to World Band Radio" was printed. As an active SWL (already with a 1985 WRTH) I decided that I had to check it out. I realized then (just as much as now) that the "Passport" isn't as a thorough reference as the WRTH. That isn't a bad thing - in fact it's a great thing. Most articles are aimed solely at the casual SWL and not at the professional DX'er with his or her antenna farms and ten radios. If you are new to the hobby (or are returning to it like I am) this is probably the first place to study. I will not compare "Passport" to the WRTH anymore. They both have their niche in the hobby.

New receiver reviews are included each year. They run the gamut from the cheaper $50 portables to the $1000+ professional models. Other articles differ from year to year one was on Internet Radio, one on propagation - how the atmosphere reflects some signals, cancels some signals out and twists others and one on World Time stations which can help keep all of your clocks accurate. There are few advertisements - all relating to the SWL hobby.

The meat of "Passport to World Band Radio" is the guide to the individual stations and their schedules. The guide to the stations is arranged alphabetically by country. It even lists the stations' addresses. This is important as hobbyists often contact the stations to verify their reception. The station usually returns a letter or a "QSL" card to verify the reception. Stations often include pennants, stickers and other neat souvenirs. The schedules list at least 90% of the SW schedules. With seasonal changes, the schedules themselves may change over time. With a current year Passport on hand you will always find something of interest to listen to. Most English language broadcasts aimed at North America are transmitted in our evening hours. However, you will generally find some English broadcasts around the clock. Many European broadcasters transmit in their native language to North America for former residents.

You will find being a SWL a great hobby and this book will help you out a great deal.

Using your shortwave radio without this book would be like trying to use the Internet without a search engine. Passport is cross linked so many ways. By time, frequency and station. If you don't already have a SW receiver, it's a good place to read-up on what's hot and what's not before you choose.

First off, I'm a bit bias. Dr. Saadat was my professor and we used his book. The book was really easy to follow and had great examples. I actually learned a lot and retained it.

One of the best Power Systems books. Very simple and clear examples. Excelent for students and experts.

The 2nd edition is almost the same as the first edition. But the book still the best power system book I have ever seen. The book is well written and organized with lot of practical examples. The author has a detailed Matlab codes for T.L. parameters, faults, load flows, optimal dispatch, and stability including the Kron reduction technique for multi-machine system. These codes can mange up to 200 bus power system. The only thing missing in this book is the protection part.

I found this book excellent. The author has gone through so much work to develop such a well written text. I have been studying power systems for years and I certainly recommend this text to all those who are seriously considering a carrier in power systems engineering. The use of MATLAB to perform analysis is original and very useful.

The author's presentation of power system analysis is very appropriate for those studying the subject for the first time. Concepts are presented clearly and the examples illustrate well the discussion in the text. The mathematical level is easily within reach for senior electrical engineering students. One very helpful feature of this book is that answers are supplied for practically all of the end-of-the-chapter problems. Also, the author makes good use of MATLAB even from Chapter 1, and SIMULINK on the book's latter part.

One of the most comprehensive books in the area I have ever seen. I like its approach with guidelines of how to use it depending on the type of user.
It combines advices on mechanical, civil and electrical aspects obtained on years of experience of the authors (more than 100 specialist from the academy and industry).
A huge effort fron the editors. If you like the subject and want one bible-like book, this is it!

A great reference book that deals with all design aspects related to pumping stations. Furthermore, there is extensive information concerning procurement and commercial issues. The book is clear even when it goes into detailed information and should be considered as a must have for every engineer working in this field.

The book is informational and a great asset in our business. It has become an essential tool used daily to help us in our day to day functions in the office.

This was a difficult book to find and we were glad Amazon.com could fullfill our needs.

The Sanks' Pumping Station design is a mile stone in its field.
Having every aspect covered, Sanks has not only designed his book in a way that is easily readable for the field related people but also made it a basic reference for the people on the management side of it.
Owning such a book is a knowldge in itself !!!!

One of the very best engineering texts that I have run across in my career. Exceptionally clear, comprehensive, and practical.

The International Space Station (ISS) had been operational for a while when this second edition came out in 2004, so there are a lot of great interior and exterior photos. I'm an adult "space fan" with an interest in educational outreach, so I'm always looking for good space-themed books for kids, and this is one of the best I've ever seen. And it's not just for kids - I learned a lot myself! The hands-on activities look great too (haven't tried any yet).

Construction is finally continuing on the ISS now. The shuttle Atlantis is still in space as I write this, having just delivered and installed a major new ISS section, and private space explorer Ms Anousheh Ansari is in a Russian Soyuz spacecraft ready to dock with and board the ISS tomorrow. It's going to be a busy place in the coming months, so if you or your kids are at all curious about the ISS or space flight in general, get this well written book and become a Space Station expert practically overnight!

An excellent book about the science of free-fall and space, written for kids, but interesting for adults as well. It has tons of interesting "hands-on" demonstrations suitable for kids that illustrate how the space station works. Would be great if you wanted ideas for a science project, or just if you're interested in the science behind space missions.

Space Station Science was selected by the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators to receive the Golden Kite Award for best nonfiction children's book of 1999. Booklist named it a Top Ten Youth Science Book, and the National Science Teachers Association and Children's Book Council named it an Outstanding Trade Book for 2000.

Marianne Dyson has produced a wonderful, thoughtful book that answers many of children's questions about living in space. How do you go to the bathroom? How do you eat? How do you breathe? She provides clear explanations and wonderful, first-hand quotes from astronauts that bring the experience to the reader in a fresh manner. The little science experiements and "try this at home" examples are a delight and really set this book apart. I read this book to my 10-year old as a bed-time story and we both loved it! As the International Space Station becomes operational next year, this volume will be indespensable for explaining to curious youngsters just what is going on.

Dyson's treatment of the phenomena in microgravity is particularly good. She provides a variety of entertaining experiments to demonstrate technology used in space. Though this book is clear enough for older children, it certainly would furnish an interested adult with plenty of new information in a readable, interesting style. This is a good gift book for that curious kid on your gift list -- but you should also get a copy for your coffee table.

Excellent tool for instruction in multiple representation. Includes transparencies to assist visual learners and includes lesson ideas in a logical sequence. Highly recommend for helping students comprehend non-fiction text.

This is an excellent way to prepare students for state assessment questions. Students are exposed to the vocabulary and questions types that they need to become familiar with especially when reading non-fiction. Our staff and students used the articles regularly and find it to be very beneficial.

I thought I'd died and gone to heaven when I found this resource for teaching informational/nonfiction selections to my 6th graders. It covers everything I am required by the state to teach: reading tools/strategies, text organization, graphic aids, various type of articles/selections, etc. A huge plus is the color transparencies that come with it and accompany the different selections.

This is one of the best resources I've come across. I can teach the whole unit just using this one source. How often can a teacher say that??

Alice Boynton's lessons are very sensible and any teacher shouldn't have problems with her suggestions. It might also be useful for a parent, like me, who has an elementary school kid and who's trying to get her to do more than read manga and watch anime. Boynton's tips attempt to capture the student's attention span and force her/him to invst some intellectual effort. To payoff in learning from an entire world of these non-fiction books.

I am using this book in an 8th grade content area reading course. It has the complete explanations of nonfiction reading, the text features, text structures, modeling examples, questions to ask after their reading, and organizers. It helps you to explain the rationale of all these different types of text. A Must for reading teachers!

This book packs a punch. If you are talented at reading between the lines this book is even better. While it is mostly an overview the specifics are mind boggling. Make it a companion for a month and watch what happens.

Thanks so much for this excellent book. It is one of the best books about the practice of this Way on WHOLE day. I don't practice Dzogchen but it is easy to see that the quality of teachings of this book are superior. One of the best books of practical Buddhism that I have read.

The simple way to expose the deepest matters and the humility and high knowledge shows the great level of practice of the author and the importance of this Tibetan school. Helpful to any Buddha follower. Excellent purchase. Recommended 100%.

This is one of the best books I have ever read on Tibetan culture and religion. It is clear and concise. It is extremely informative, revealing practices that have been kept secret, for some unknown reason, for centuries. A great book!

Recently, in the West, a number of books have appeared on the subject of Dzog Chen. This is the first book to describe the Bon-Po point of view of these high teachings. This pleases me greatly. They are derived from the Zhang Zhung Nyan Gyud, which is the most essential within the Bon-Po Dzog Chen.

Lama Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche has been trained in this lineage since he was fourteen by the Venerable Lopon Sangye Tenzin and the Venerable Lopon Tenzin Namdak. From the early days on, he has shown a special gift when it comes to these meditations.

The book is written in clear and concise English. This is particularly important as the teachings are very elaborate and at times hard to understand. The simple language used clarifies tremendously. The authentic descriptions of Dzog Chen give the serious student ample material to practice Dzog Chen.

This book doesn't include stories; it explains the quintessential aspects of Dzog Chen. In other words, it gets right to the point. Especially the chapters such as the ones on Contemplation and Integration. I highly recommend this book to any serious student of these high teachings.

The best World's most Comprehensive and Up-to-Date Guide to Broadcasting.

This is a must have for Shortwave Listening. A wealth of information.

for anybody who have a problem to verify listening of the radio.
It is like litle cook book which you must have altough he know to cook.

Localy not so precise (maybe for litle cauntrys)

All you need to make DXing: info about countries, local & international radiostations of LW, MW & SW; interesting lists, ecc.

As a long time and long distance radio listener, I find this invaluable
to identify radio signals, where they are from and the language being
used.

My grade 1-2 students enjoy this book every year. We read it on the 100th day of school and also do lots of the activities in the book. My kids especially enjoy making the hats with 100 things stuck on.

If you you are wanting a book that would grabb you and make you keep reading, read this book. It is just the most exciting book there is. Trust me on this. Have fun reading!

This is easy enough for my 6 year old and her best (7 year old) friend really likes it too. A fun read for the 100th day of school.

I read this book to my class on the 100th day of school every year. It's short, energetic, idea-inspiring, and the kids love the rhyme. It mirrors the way we celebrate the 100th day at our school, so the kids think it's fun to see another class celebrating in a similar way.
