Classic Walks of Australia

This comprehensive and beautifully illustrated guidebook is an ideal reference book to some of the best bushwalks found throughout Australia. Over 180 walks ranging from easy family walks to challenging distance walks are featured in the 'coffee table' size publication.

Classic Walks of Australia gives a detailed description of the walking conditions to be found in each state and highlights travel arrangements, climatic variations and notable geological and historical features in the region. Each walk is illustrated with a coloured map and listed with a summary of attractions, distance, time, fitness ratings, topographic maps required and contact details for further information (including campsites and equipment).

Walks vary to include those in desert landscapes, rainforests, alpine areas, tropics, coastal paths, mountainous regions and offshore islands; the variety is stunning and provides a wonderful cross section to the varied Australian landscape.

Classic Walks of Australia is a very beautiful and motivating gift for any bushwalk enthusiast from anywhere in the world.

Wonderful Useful Information!

What a relief it was to find this book!

After ordering and returning 'Architectural Design for Tropical Regions' by Cleveland Salmon (avoid Salmon's book, unless you don't already know that "the sun can be very bright when the sky is clear and the sunlight is intense"!), this book came to my rescue.

Packed with detailed information and design strategies, along with good illustrations, this book is well suited to architects or well-educated laymen (it is NOT written at a grade school level). I was at first hesitant to order this book, as little information was provided by Amazon. After reading it cover to cover more than once, I'm happy to recommend CLIMATE RESPONSIVE DESIGN as one of my two best books for hot humid building design.

(The other favorite is COURTYARDS: Aesthetic, Social & Thermal Delight. Not just a "pretty picture book," Courtyards contains lots of highly useful information (charts, graphs, formulas) as well as wonderful color & B&W photos, plus line drawings.)

Climate Responsive Design has provided a wealth of solid, useful, pertinent information while working on projects for the Yucatan, where the climate ranges from hot humid in the summer/rainy months, to warm humid in winter/'dry' months, to WHEW in April & May (hot hot hot & maybe humid or not).

This is a great book for people who want to work with athletes or coaches. It provides a thoroughly referenced summary on the principles of various topics in sports nutrition, followed by "practice tips" written by top sports dietitians. It really helps to know how to put the information into use.

Required Reading for Those Committed to Profound Change

Alan Sieler has done it again! In his second volume of Coaching to the Human Soul, he tackles emotions and teaches us that we can become emotional learners and learn to use our emotions to become more effective at work and in our lives. Sieler's work is grounded in the concepts of philosophy, psychology, and biology; he has taken difficult concepts of philosophers, like Martin Heidegger and Fernando Flores, and articulated them in a way that is practical and comprehensible. However, the book is not a theoretical or intellectual approach to emotions, it is participative; the reader gets the opportunity to experience his own emotional triggers through self-coaching exercises and reflective activities. Sieler provides "Ontological Coaching in Action" vignettes that drive home the learning as well as provide a road map for professional coaches. This book is required reading for those that are committed to producing profound change in their clients.

This is a work of honesty and humour. If you can get your hands on it and you are interested in travel in the east of Oz. you would be mad not to! I know some towns were pretty angry at the author but - well - he was just telling it like it is... Very witty and insightful!

Kaleidoscopic View of Aging

The title "Coda", the elderly man racing in a wheelchair on the cover, and the newspaper articles preceding each section of the tryptich describing grannie and grandpa dumping, i.e. leaving confused elderly in public places, hoping someone will find them and care for them is how the book grabbed this reader's attention and it did not let up until the very end. Even then, the reader is dazed from the depth, complexity, and family relationships covered within 188 pages of the book. The subject is highly relevant. It is written with sensitivity, creativity, frequent humor, deep seriousness and wit.

Thea Astley describes the ordinairy life of the charming elderly lady Kathleen Hackendorf from the first person viewpoint. She is an Australian lady who raised two children, a son and daughter, who are successful in their respective fields and who married and had children of their own. Kathleen has an elderly good friend Daisy with whom she shares intimacies and has get-togethers for coffee and cake but who dies suddenly and unexpectedly. Kathleen is gradually becoming senile ... and forgetful. Her children have tried letting her live with them alternately but this option is fraught with problems. They are forced to make serious decisions on her behalf for her well being. Modern life is revealed in twisted complexity. This novel has wonderful imagery, ironic humor, and biting reality. It is highly worth reading and pondering.
