A fantastic account by one of the passengers onboard BA009. We get the technical aspects of the incidence thanks to a great deal of research and interviews with the flight crew but also the personal stories of the passengers and the cabin crew.

Surely one of the great unsung books of aviation. Eric Moody is a hero and his actions are explained in great detail here.

Simple enough for the layman to understand, and engaging for the professional alike - you really get the feeling of what it's like to be on that warm dark flightdeck miles above the earth when the unthinkable happens.

That he was 'just doing his job' is testament alone to this humble man.

Siracusa's book is and excellent work. It is easy to read, understand, and is an excellent resource for Australian History, as well as American Foreign Relations.

America's Australia is a significant contribution to the literature on the subject, providing the best analysis of an important but often ignored relationship. This book belongs on the bookshelf of anyone interested in this topic

"Annie Stories" (and its sequel, "More Annie Stories") give parents a useful tool to help children cope with any situation that is difficult or painful, like divorce, bedwetting, teasing, jealousy, or moving to a new home or school. It offers a simple, healing technique anyone can use. I found it a joy to read, and have recommended it many times. Enjoy!

Born of the vote, not of a war (I've borrowed that from the Australian Centenary of Federation), the Commonwealth of Australia, barely 13 years old, faced involvement in the First World War as a test of its young resolve. Emerging from the conflict with a sense of identity perhaps not attainable by less traumatic means. This book is a condensation of the Official Australian History of the 1914-18 War, edited by the author (C.E.W. Bean). It seeks to make the events of this time more accessible to the general reader (the Official History is in 12 volumes), especially the original readership, who had just faced the next war (first edition published 1946). The author establishes a sense of authority which no modern writer could ever hope for: photos of the Anzac day landings (25th April, 1915), at Gallipoli, credited as "Photo by the writer". While the Allies eventually lost this campaign (making it a fitting way to remember lives lost to the futility of war), the soldiers who had gathered and given meaning to the title ANZAC (both Australian & New Zealand) went on to serve with distinction on the Western Front (and other notable places). It is here that the book makes its greatest impact revealling lesser known details (the Gallipoli campaign is still actively recalled today on Anzac Day). The soldiers known for being a disciplinary nightmare behind the lines showed themselves to be amongst the most disciplined in the front, under enemy fire. Masters not only of the physical aspects of this war, but also of the psychological: the morale crushing "peaceful penetrations" of the enemy lines. The author does have a pedantic way to his writing, unless you're specifically interested in the units you learn to faze out the extra (though understandable) detail. He also has a tendency to use language that could now be called quaint. I have a strong desire to include specific details from the book, but I genuinely don't know what to include and what not to. The only real option is to recommend that you read it.

This book by noted Australian military historian, C. W. Bean is one of the classics of Australian military history. The book was first published over 70 years ago, and has an immediacy and relevance to the audience of its time. This is a chronological history of Australian (and New Zealand's) participation in the Great War in Europe. Modern perspectives of Australian participation in that conflict have taken on what appears to be a new, and more critical (and decidedly anti-British) bias in recent years. Yet revisionism is no claim to originality. It is surprising to see, in his pedantic style, that C. W. Bean, even as a man of his times, reveals a critical (though controlled) eye to British deployment of Australian forces that were supplementing the well-tested French and British units in the field. At times the language of the text seems quaint, due to its descriptive attention to non-salient matters, such as names of units, officers, and specific communications. The book discusses detailed troop movements before and after specific battles. Through these accounts, the reader obtains, through immersion, an appreciation of many forgotten aspects of tactical, logistical and strategic military operations issues of the time. Of interest, for example, are C. W. Bean's detailed descriptions of the procedures that were adopted to condition new Australian units to the destructive bombardments on the Western Front and the process by which units exchanged places in the front line trenches, without alerting the enemy, is of interest. C. W. Bean was renowned as a man who visited actual battle sites, to confirm contradictory claims made by different unit commanders. When he could, he reviewed the results of Australian actions through captured enemy reports where possible. He was also the man who saved Australian military records from a destruction order, mandated due to government disinterest. This book was perhaps the first popular account that resulted from this digest of actual Australian battle reports. The author utilizes vivid accounts of actions, both major and minor, from the original dispatches, and clearly shows the gradual evolution of the Australian army into a able and dependable ally in a global conflict. The book continues to be valuable as a handy, concise, one-volume review of Australia's total contribution to Allied victory in Europe in World War One. The extent of continued Australian involvement in European campaigns which followed the failed and famous Gallipoli landings in 1915, will surprise many readers, including Australians. The author is a product of his time, and does not question Australia's involvement in the War. But the author does reveal his patriotic and critical temper, through a controlled and detailed analysis of British-dominated decision making at the command level. This criticism is levelled at the perceived lack of appreciation of Australian initiative and command capability, of course, and thereby provides an insight into British-Australian tensions apparent at the time.

I had decided I was not going to like this book. I was wrong, Cairnes' book captures the Zeitgeist with a critique of traditional directive management. It illustrates the ethos of companies with insight with telling practical examples. The enterprise as a heartless machine is an anachronistic, inadequate notion in an increasingly unpredictable, uncertain environment. I have just finished reading this book, and felt compelled to tell how much these clear thoughts have helped me. Indeed, it would not be an exaggeration to say that I felt as if the book had been written it just for me !! I have recently returned from a "wilderness experience" in the Kimberley region, which would have to be one of the most spiritual places I have ever visited. I was given this book on the last day, and found I could relate very directly to so much of what is written about the "hero's quest". My life is now so much more meaningful - I am enthusiastic and full of energy. And I love it all ! I am 47, and have been working as a professional economist for over twenty years - and am also a farmer's wife and mother of two young daughters. I am now beginning to understand just what a "cocoon" of risk-averse options I had wrapped myself in - and how a bit of courage, self-awareness, and self-confidence can make such a difference. What a waste - but it's not too late to change the rest of my life. All of a sudden I am not madly trying to juggle all the usual things, but have identified my priorities and determined to introduce a bit of healthy "balance". And it works ! And so my deepest thanks to this contribution to my journey of self-discovery - an intensely personal learning. The future is looking good. I CAN make a contribution - and it will be truly fulfilling.

Miss Ashley's Odyssey is a voyage indeed. Told with frankness, humour, wit, and a total lack of self pity, April Ashley started out life as a boy in Liverpool, and became famous as Britain's most glamorous sex change. It took courage and determination, and after I read this wonderful book I felt, well, if April Ashley can get through life, then so can the rest of us.

In these pages, the book is beautifully written, you will meet anyone who was anybody in the haute bohemian world of the swinging 60's. You will meet such diverse characters as Lady Diana Cooper, Little Gloria from Leeds, Viva King, Sarah Churchill, various titled folk and other folk who live by their wits and their talents. Thankfully Miss Ashley is not a snob and will chat to anyone, and the resulting narrative has such wit and style, it is almost an object lesson in how to present a life lived to the full.

This wonderful book reminds of Misia Sert's memoirs, and also Daphne Fielding's Mercury Presides not forgetting Lady Diana Cooper's autobiographies. It has the same laugh-out-loud humour of Helene Hanff's Underfoot in Show Business too.

I read this fabulous biography after April Ashley signed and gave me a copy to read. I met her years ago in London and she told me the story in the book of her life. She was a guest in my home for a week. Duncan Fallowell was also there at times. Very interesting writer and very fond of April. I was deeply touched and sympathetic to April's journey from man to woman. Truly interesting and a must read. MCS

This is a great book. It's neat and it features wonderful pictures. It teaches some basics about massage. It contains a lot of easy to follow recipes for creams, lotions, pomades and the like. It teaches to match base oils with skin type. It also teaches how to use the most common essential oils for aromatherapy. There is a wealth of information which, although a little synthetic, is very clear. For beginners this book is a real treasure.

For anyone interested in aromatherapy or massage this book is a must. It has beautiful full color pictures on every page. Easy well written explanations and descriptions. It breaks down into the basics massaging (with photos showing the proper techniques), as well as the different plants and their oils and what they are used for to include medicinal and tea uses. A great beginning book.

After reviewing all of the books available on tassel making, this was the ONLY one I found with easy, illustrated instructions. There is some history, background, etc.--but reading from beginning to end will have you ready to make the most decorative of tassels. It is a beautiful book--almost coffe-table quality. The split pages which allow the reader to pick and choose styles from many tassels to make an original design are effective and clever. Great list of sources for materials, too---it's all there!
