At first glance I thought this book had the information , however after reviewing it, it is not detailed enough, should delve into topics with more detail and with more rigor. Was disappointed with its overall coverage.

I needed to get this book for a communications class. We have gone through the first chapter and the amount of errors and typos are inexcusable for a technical book. For the amount of money the text cost it should have been proofread. My classmates an I will give this text a big two thumbs down when it comes time to do the course evaluation.

This book was basicly about 100 pages of "just buy a descrambler". The rest is composed of unrelated or useless information that is only there to add wieght to the book. Absolutely nothing about how to actually get channels for free. The bulk of the knowledge contained in this book could be gotten from a ten minute conversation with an average "radio shack employee". It is currently gathering dust untill winter when it can actually be of some use..

This is one of the worst books I have ever seen - effectively a PhD thesis poorly converted into a over priced book that is full of technical, grammatical and typographical errors. For example, the following paragraph is from page 56 of the book:
"McDonalds began a trial program in New York City that offers an hour of free 'Intel-verified' WLAN access for a 60-mintue [sic] session for a nominal fee."
I have no idea how something like this could get past the editors, let alone the spell checker. Being a PhD candidate I can identify the technical errors, however someone who is not up to speed would easily mistake them as fact.
Most of the diagrams are very ordinary - certainly not of a quality that matches the price tag. About the only thing going for this book is the fact that it provides a broad summary of the area and has a large bibliography, which in turn provides references to more accurate and useful material.
If you need a book on this topic I'd suggest checking out Zhili Sun's "Satellite Networking : Principles and Protocols".

I'm probably in the minority when it comes to McEvoy books. I really try to give him the benefit of the doubt, and sometimes I think he produces a really good poker book when others don't. A great example of this is "How to Win No Limit Holdem Tournaments" he wrote with Don Vines.
This book, however, isn't worth the paper it's printed on. I purchased it in hopes of getting some valuable advice on how to fashion a strategy for satellites. This would include a detailed discussion about bankroll requirements, low blind strategies, and most importantly bubble play. The bankroll topic gets touched on very vaguely, there are some general play guidelines that get better coverage in his other books, and there is little to no good consideration of how to play when approaching the bubble of a satellite. The final and worst flaw of the book is its passing mention of online satellites. Considering online satellites are so popular these days, you would think a 2007 redo of his earlier books on satellites (which I have not read but imagine cover the same territory) would spend more time on this aspect.
Not talking extensively and proficiently about online play and the bubble aspect of a satellite would be like writing an instructional book on running for public office without mentioning advertising and filing deadlines. I was highly disappointed in this book (co-written with Brad Daugherty, to spread the blame equally), and figure I could probably write an improved product overnight if I really set my mind to it. Hey, maybe there's an idea. In all seriousness, don't waste your money if real satellite instruction is what you're after.

Ugghhh....! On the surface, this book promises a great deal of technical insight into the design and operation of satellite systems - particularly the ground segment.
However the variable quality of the subject matter presented completely fails to do justice to the scope of the book. Topics that the author is most familiar with, such as television broadcasting formats, are treated in great detail (complete with circuit-level diagrams!). However in the treatment of wider system issues - such as satellite characteristics, orbits and link budgets - the author is hopelessly out of his depth.
The most irritating feature is the totally misleading title. It would have made much more sense to call this book something like "Introduction to Satellite TV Equipment Service and Maintainance" and cut out the mediocre system-level material.

This book was assigned for an online class. It has little case studies of how GIS works and is used. I thought it was weak, superficial and dated.

Very disappointed in this. I was anticipating at best a bound book with few pages. This is a one page item, multifold like a map you would buy in a gas station. Content of no value. Highly unimpressed.
