I've listened to this twice on CD. I've read it to my daughter in 5th grade. After she picked Greg for her 5th grade "hero" project her class was motivated to raise Pennies for Peace.
And if you come away wondering if there wasn't a good deal of "literary license" thrown in, I can assure you that after meeting Greg I'm convinced he is the real deal.
Now I'm hoping for a mini seriesReview Date: 2008-10-04
But I did have a film going through my imagination as I read the book. And I hope that one day we'll have a series across several evenings so most of the story can be shared on the screen.

Very Clear History about the Federal GovernmentReview Date: 2008-10-05
Statesman Ron Paul's 2008 work.Review Date: 2008-10-01
Why didn't I vote for him?Review Date: 2008-10-05
I had already voted for Dr. Ron Paul, a pro-life and -liberty candidate...in 1988.
Friends and family castigated me for it, but I remain convinced that this first voting endeavor was my best one.
But over the years I've been inculcated in the belief that I "can't throw my vote away." I want mine back!
The book surprised me by its clarity and vigor of thought. Coming off the heels of the banking mess, which the book predicted was amazing accuracy--the FED printing easy money, providing for easy credit--makes our paper money system unsound.
Sound money, limited (constitutional!) government, rights given by God and not bequeathed to us at the behest of some government bureaucrat who live like parasites off the body politic, non intervention in foreign policy, and letting states decide on abortion are some of the highlights of this political apology that will live on long after the election.
Some of us sentient Americans who haven't been too addled by the government schools or who aren't sucking furiously off a gov't teat, realize that our liberties have been far too eroded away. Ron Paul filled the vacuum, taking a principled stand for freedom, which is after all truly the American way.
Dr. Paul, a Congressman from Houston, Texas, reminds us we are far better off trusting markets and people than government.
I just wish I had voted for him, and not listened so carefully to others. The Revolution was a wake-up call.

Personally, I have found people (Democrats & Republicans alike) to be generally intrigued by Dr. Paul's ideas, wanting to learn more. I share this book with them, & will continue to do so. Perhaps Dr. Paul's point of view will come into the mainstream soon.
Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.Review Date: 2008-09-30
You will see the beautifully simple truth about liberty, which will, as Shakespeare said, "set you free". If you are already familiar with Ron Paul, you are well aware of his ability to cure the political apathy of the young and old with his message of freedom and constitutional government. If you are not familiar with the U.S. representative from Texas, then you are in for a treat... and an awakening.
The ideas expressed in this book, as Senator Goldwater has put it, take "a sledge hammer to the political establishment". They propose real "change" - not the fake Obama variety.
I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in embarking on a quest for the truth, rather than gobbling up the filtered, processed fodder that the "mainstream media" tries to feed us. It is a good starting point for anyone interested in Dr. Paul's ideas, or just anyone who likes living in "the land of the free", and wants it to stay that way.
The "Ron Paul Revolution" is gaining steam, and shows no signs of stopping. We would love to have you on board.
(As a side note, another great reason to pick up this book is the excellent "Reading List for a Free and Prosperous America" that is included in the back. Oh, and I recommend picking up your very own copy of the U.S. Constitution. It will be the best five dollars you ever spend. Guaranteed.)

Rockets in West VirginiaReview Date: 2008-03-16
"Rocket Boys" by Homer H. Hickam, Jr. is a nonfiction account of a group of friends from Coalwood, West Virginia in the early 1960's who have a fetish for making rockets. Homer and his friends have a dream to shoot a rocket up into the clouds. This story gives the reader a message that dreams really can come true.
Rocket Boys is one of the strongest books I have ever read. The author accomplished his goals to tell people that team work is one of the most important things to know in your life. This book is recommended for people that like space and rockets and who want a hopeful book to read. Reading Rocket Boys really gets you thinking about team work and how far you can get with it.

This book is his story and how he was successful.
I bought 24 copies of this book to inspire my advanced 6th grade Reading class. They loved the book. In our discussions they mentioned never giving up. Homer and his friends kept trying until they had success.
Thank you for sharing your life with us, Mr. Hickam.

Mossflower Review Review Date: 2007-07-28
A True Gem of FantasyReview Date: 2007-05-20
Mossflower may be the best YA fantasy book I've read since "The Hobbit," maybe even surpassing "The Chronicles of Narnia" for imagination, superb writing skill, literary worth, and sheer reading enjoyment!
Far from being just a book for young adults, I am well over thirty and highly critical of most fiction books, and was unable to put the book down. Not only does Jaques write in an incredibly skillful and beautiful style, but his plots and subplots are nothing short of genious. The character developement of the animorphed creatures is far superior to even the average bestselling book of fiction starring realistic human characters. Jaques is a master of dialogue and dialect, and I especially enjoyed the strange coloquial mole-speech;
"Hurr, Oi be liken it moiself better'n any deeper-n'-ever pie oive et, stan' on moi hole!"
The triumphs, determinations, and gallant speeches of Martin the Warrior actually brought tears to my eyes a few times during the tale, and the antics and humorous songs and poems of Gonff made me laugh out loud more than once.
What's more, Jaques created a complex villian to be copied by fantasy authors for centuries to come in the characterization of the wicked cat Tsarmina, and painted a thoroughly believable array of personalities and attitudes in the various soldiers of her army.
Like Tolkien's work, Jaques has also done his homework thoroughly, and has created a vast history to support his tales, which I think is a trait missing from many of the more fly-by-night and commercial fantasies of today.
By the end of this novel, you will have forgotten that mice can't talk and that badgers don't wield swords, having become intimately familiar with some of the most realistic personalities ever to grace the pages of literature. I cannot recommend this book enough, and am sure that the others in the series will be equally delightful!

MossflowerReview Date: 2007-04-09
The peaceful woodland creatures of Mossflower are forced to live under the tyrannical rule of the evil wildcat queen, Tsarmina. That is until the coming of Martin the Warrior. Martin brings hope and promise to the animals of Mossflower. With the help of a mighty weapon, the habitants of Mossflower will ban together to take back what is rightfully theirs and put an end to the evil reign of Tsarmina.
I highly recommend this book. It is full of action that draws the reader in and keeps him/her reading.

TrumanReview Date: 2008-09-29
Long, but well worth the lengthReview Date: 2008-09-25
Although the first 50 pages or so weren't extremely engrossing, after that the book quickly captivated me. I didn't know much about Harry Truman, and what I did know led me to believe that he was a fairly average president. What I learned is that he was an amazing overachiever who, when faced with the weight of the world, was at his best. McCullough really brought the man to life, and although Mr. Truman did some things that none of us would be proud of, McCullough didn't provide excuses for Harry - he did explain possible causes for Truman's behavior.
After reading this book, you can't help but feeling that the United States was extremely fortunate to have Truman in the nation's highest office, and you can't help but wish you could have met the man.
I wholeheartedly recommend the book as a must read.
A brilliant biographyReview Date: 2008-09-21
Above all, it is superbly readable, as entertaining as a good novel. I experienced a sense of regret having finished it today.
It is a clear and balanced portrait of a leader and a wonderful study of understated, firm and steady leadership.
I would rate it as essential reading for anyone wanting to understand key aspects of the world since WWII and which continue to influence events today.

Heartwarming, Riveting StoryReview Date: 2008-10-04
I have told many of my friends and family about what an excellent read it is. It is such a fun book and such a heart warming book but at the same time, the book teaches us some solid lessons about prayer, faith, unconditional love, self sacrifice, friendship, prejudice, and overcoming difficulty in marriage. I inadvertently awakened my husband late one night as I read the pages of this book when I began sniffing and weeping about Deborah a little too loudly. It was very late at night but I had been promising myself for many chapters that I would read one more chapter and turn in for the night. But I couldn't put the book down!
I don't want to give away too much of the book for those who haven't read it yet. So suffice it to say, it was so enjoyable that I was almost sorry that I read it in three days. I didn't want the story to end. I wanted more of this wonderful book! I want to say a big THANK YOU and BLESS YOU to Ron Hall and Denver Moore for sharing their story with us. This story should be made into a film so that more people will learn of this beautiful story.

WonderfulReview Date: 2007-11-15
My only real gripe about this book (and not even a big enough gripe to drop a star, so take it for the whining that it is) is that the adult characters can be pretty stupid at times. I know this is a staple of children's literature in order to forment conflict (after all, conflict couldn't form very easily if all these adults were competant), but it's simply infuriating that the two resident thieves in the group are continually treated with 'Christian charity' in an atmosphere where one's possessions often meant the difference between life and death. It may seem very natural, to our modern American eyes, to overlook the theft of a sweater, but when that's the only sweater a child owns and a cold night is falling, you can bet that is a much bigger deal than previously realized.
Nevertheless, this book is still superb. Buy it, read it, enjoy it. Just be prepared to explain to your children that being 'charitable' doesn't mean you have to be a victim.
