Deep waters for the artist

When I read this book, I loved the ideas more than the excecution of them, in the literary sense. I guess I expected it to be more eloquent, with better excegetics, but I realized that it was not needed.

Some times as a painter, I would keep working on a painting too long, and really make it worse than better. What I was looking for was not needed, it would have muddied the colors Michael was trying to communicate to us.

Thanks for giving us your thoughts, and being willing to share those of others with us in the persuit of excellence in our gifts.

Get it for the letters...

I have to admit, I was somewhat disappointed with Scribbling in the Sand at first... It's not that there was anything wrong with the book, but it struck me as being longer than it needed to be for what it had to say. The book had many good things to say, but it felt like a light read, and I was hoping for something more deep and incisive.

Then, however, I ran across the chapter with letters from various artists and theologians, and it provided just what I was looking for. They were a great contrast with Michael Card's simpler writing about faith and art, rounding out the content of the book with some insightful and challenging thoughts on art as worship.

All in all, this is a good book for someone new to the topic of the intersection of art and Christian faith, and the letters especially are worth reading and re-reading.

Yes, okay, Michael's book is great and I had quite an eloquent review in mind. Then I got to the letter by Harold Best at the end of the book and forgot all about it: get this book for those pages alone. And for Calvin Seerveld's letter, and for the letter from the art guy from New York, and from the Dutch guy. Mallowcups will of course be credited to Mike's account because he had the--what? generosity? halacious acumen?--to include them.

This book should be a textbook companion in the life of every writer, poet, artist, whatever, who belongs to Jesus and wants a clear slant on the creative responsibility. I haven't read another book of its kind, and didn't know I was wistful for it. There are some books that should never be loaned out, and this has joined those few on my shelf. I'll slobber and rave over it, and will remain cheerfully selfish with my copy. I'll buy it for someone else before I loan it, because it will be taken from my shelf again and again for reference.

Having gushed, I will say I'm not sure how I feel about Mike's take on this "getting together" thing, this accountability thing with other artists. I've seen that side, have been there, and the accountability rap can get icky. Stormy solitude is a more compelling place; but I will say, I'm cautiously checking out his ideas and I'll get back to him on it.

Oh, and Mike: the appendix, which you wrote "reluctantly" on the advice of some friends, wasn't needed. You should have taken a bullet on that one. If someone didn't get it before then, how could a didactic play-by-play stick 'em in the guts? I loved it when you said "For their sake, here, reluctantly, are a few ideas." What cheering honesty.

Mallowcups for Mike, the whole package, points and all.

Why should a doctor who can't carry a tune in a bucket and can't draw a stick figure love a book about the nature of art and creativity written by a musician? But I fell in love with this book from the first chapter, for it beautifully and eloquently puts forth a vision of Christianity that everyone needs to hear and embrace. As Larry Crabb describes the book, "Every Christian needs to meditate on Michael Card's message...the result will be a thrilling release of the Spirit from depths you hadn't before realized were there.." I had the pleasure of hearing Michael discuss the themes of this book in a coffee-house: he is a humble and wise servant of Christ, and his writing reflects it.

Michael Card is well-known for his music, and as a Christian author he reaches down deep into the heart. Scribblng in the Sand will challenge artists of all types to use their gifts as worship to God. This is not a how to book. No advice on getting published or how to write better or how to paint or how to improve your talent.
The middle bogged down a bit for me, but the first few chapters and the last few were excellent. Great teaching. Great reading. He includes letters written to artists from other artists. These provide very good advice and were poignant. If you are an artist of any type, get this book and keep in your library.

My company purchased Crystal Reports as the main utility for pulling data from our large relational database. I had never seen Crystal before much less used it. I got my hands on this book today at 12:30 p.m. By 1:17, I was pulling data and manipulating reports like a pro. I would recommend this book to anybody who has to learn Crystal in a hurry.

The Best Book Out There

I was searching for a book for a friend and ran across other books on running for seniors. Those reviews weren't very good, then I remembered this book that I read a couple of years ago. I realized that it was still timely, informative and the best info I've read on how to run safely until you're 100. I've followed the information in this book and it has allowed me to resume my running passion, place in races for my age group and just be content with finishing.
For those who say it may be a little difficult to follow the eating suggestions, it is much more difficult to watch friends and family succumb to the diseases of affluence...routinely having their chest cracked open for heart disease, going blind from diabetes, and enduring chemo. Ruth's program really works, you feel so much better, and interestingly, is similar to how the Olympic Kenyans eat. Well-researched, she quotes the works of Dr. John McDougall and Dr. Neal Barnard. Their work and books ought to be worthy of Nobel Prizes, for all the hundreds of thousands of people those doctors have helped over the years! This book--this author--has changed the lives of several people I know including my own. The information contained within far exceeded my expectations for this book. It should be read by everyone. I would have given it 10 stars if I could have.

You should know that you will not get this information from your doctor. Most doctors know very little about the impact of nutrition and exercise on the most common diseases since it has not been until recent times that nutrition and fitness has been taught in medical schools. I especially recommend it especially to people of any age who are trying to prevent or overcome cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, arthritis, alzheimers, obesity.

I promise you will be inspired by this book! [...]

I have just finished reading Ruth Heidrich's latest publication. Found it an inspiring read for a vegetarian who aspires to veganism "most of the time". Ms Heidrich has obviously written this book to encourage readers to take that first step in thinking about their nutrition differently. May I say though that Ms Heidrich's dedication to veganism and competative running could present as daunting to the average punter who is looking for direction around lifestyle changes. This is acknowledged by Ms H. who does encourage her readers to start off slowly and work towards goals. I am planning to order Ms H's. cookbook and work towards refining my diet using ideas already discussed in this publication. MmmmmYum Yum...Kale & Celery for Breakfast..??? Reframe that (a technique Ms H. discuses in her book)... So much better than Beta Blockers & Anti inflammatories for brekky. More Please.

Dr. Ruth's personal battle resulted in extensive research done by her for the benefit of all of us (male or female). She wanted answers to why she was ill and discovered that her illness (and its causes) were not all that unique. The rarity is in applying the information to one's lifestyle. Don't sit back and wait for yourself to become ill, use preventative measures to promote good health long into your "prime years" so that you won't have to be at the mercy of drugs, doctors and nursing homes like many of our parents.

This book was very inspiring, and motivated me to start a daily exercise program of walking and running.

It is easy to follow the advice and the facts are backed up by the research that was done. I am happy to say I have lost almost 12 lbs and the pounds are continuing to come off.

This is an easy read book and it is working for me. I have even given my 20+ year old son a copy. You are never to young to start taking care of you body.

I particularly like the fact that the CD includes a lot of interactivity and gives the listener practical tools to practice what they are learning. Mr. Zeoli delivers his topic in a way that is very engaging and easy to understand.

I'd recommend this without hesitation!

Practical, straight-forward, effective...and easy to implement. A must-consider for those who make high-visibility presentations, and a great-to-have for all those who report to you, and from whom you expect clear, concise feedback on a daily basis.

The tenents presented with respect to Public Speaking can be applied to all aspects of intra-department communications. I believe this will help my staff attain reputations for being on top of subject matter, and become the pro-forma "go-to" authorities for our clients and senior-most management.

It is now part of our library, and we hope to bring Mr. Zeoli on-site for more intensive training to a wider audience.

Highly recommended.

Zeoli's audiobook distinguishes itself from any other product in this market in that it's purpose is not to simply teach the listener how to public speak in its most traditional form. What Zeoli is able to leave his audience with is an appreciation of how public speaking is inherent in all that we do. It's a skill that anyone can master and understanding and believing in the 7 principles will help get you there!

I highly recommend this product. Zeoli takes an entertaining and practical approach to delivering his message. All listeners, regardless of age or profession, will benefit.

There's nothing better than learning and laughing put together. Mary Lou Belli has created a sitcom textbook that everyone in the television industry (not just the actor), should have in their library. From the costume designer & script superviser to the writer & technical coordinator, everyone who plays a part in making a sitcom successful is discussed. You'll learn sitcom terminology and have fun reading comments and stories from legends. There are even quizzes! But all fun! No pulling teeth with this one. Calling Hilary Rice by such a nickname may seem to indicate familiarity but the fact is that after reading this incredible book, I feel as if I know Ms. Rice as personally as I would know, say, my best friend. As a big Dawson's Creek fan, I must say that Ms. Rice does the show, the characters, and the actors, a great service. If there is one book that will make people appreciate this wonderful show, it would be this one. And I would hesitate to call anyone a fan who has not purchased this book. Ms. Rice's wonderful appreciation for the show, and delightful sense of humor make this book a joy to read. I would read it again and again, if I did not have classes to attend.

My oldest son used the Summer Bridges books between kindergarten and 1st grade. Completing only one or two activities a day helped keep him sharp on new skills he had learned in kindergarten and prepared him for the next level. We enjoyed them so much we ordered 1st to 2nd grade for this summer and also for his younger brother pre-K to K. What I like most about the pre-K to K is the simplicity of exercises. Simply exercising dexterity is so important for rooting good writing ability. My son is only 4 and will be completing one more year of preschool before attending kindergarten, but he is already practicing tracing lines and letters. Also...we order all three available books for my oldest son..Math, Reading, and Activities. The pages are bright and interesting. All activities should take 10 minutes or less. They are simple review mapped out for moms and dads. Also in each book there are summer reading lists which are book titles appropriate for age and reading level. The children can then, after reading the book, score it according to how well they liked it. Excellent, excellent product. These books will be used in our home every summer!!!

These stories are great. Superman is powerful but not so powerful that nothing is a challenge. Clark Kent has a backbone. Lois is not annoying. The stories are not far-fetched space aliens, but actual criminals and gangsters. These radio dramas are well written and will not bore. They are all connected into two large stories which helps. They come with a booklet on the history of the radio dramas and entertainment at the time which is very informative.

This box set starts off with Supermans origin. A hero being useless without villians, he quickly faces off against serial style villians like the Yellow Mask and the Wolf. All the sound has been remastered and it comes in a great box set. I love it!

Great Baby Shower Gift

I purchased this for a baby shower gift. Each block has a different Mother Goose nursery rhyme, a letter of the alphabet, a number and illustrations. With all the technology out there for kids, it's nice to know that building blocks are still in for kids. I still have my wooden building blocks when I was a child but nothing as beautiful as these.

Great toy for toddlers and older kids too!

When my son opened this toy at his first birthday party my eight year old son flipped out! I couldn't believe how excited he was (how "cool" he thought the blocks were). My toddler of course loved them too and still plays with them now that he's two. Since the older brothers thought it was a great toy, they enjoyed stacking them and knocking them down with their little brother. Even I don't mind stacking and nesting the blocks with my son...over and over and over. I plan on giving this as a baby gift or as a first birthday gift to friends and family in the future!

Best Baby Gift Idea We've Found

We give this now for all our baby gifts. It's great developmentally for such a wide range of ages -- babies can put one box inside another, toddlers can begin stacking them, older kids can put the alphabet or numbers in order. And unlike the wooden stacking blocks, it doesn't hurt when they fall down!

Beautifully Illustrated Mother Goose Blocks

We purchased this collection of Mother Goose nesting blocks illustrated by Sylvia Long after we had already purchased the Mother Goose book of Nursery Rhymes. This means we already had the opportunity to see the detail and thoughtfulness of her illustrations up close.

There are ten blocks in all. Below is listed from largest to smallest block:

Number 10, No letter, Nursery Rhyme-"Peter, Peter Pumpkin Eater" with an illustration of such
Number 9, Letters Y & Z, Nursery Rhyme-"Humpty Dumpty" with illustration of such (I should note here that Sylvia Long doesn't show a living egg creature falling off a wall like we saw when we were kids, this is a depiction of an egg cracking and a chick coming out--this is what I meant above by "thoughtful illustration")
Number 8, Letters V, W, X, Nursery Rhyme-"Ring Around the Rosies"
Number 7, Letters S, T, U, Nursery Rhyme-"Hey Diddle Diddle"
Number 6, Letters P, Q, R, Nursery Rhyme-"Mary Had a Little Lamb"
Number 5, Letters M, N, O-Nursery Rhyme-"Hush A Bye Baby" (this depicts a mother bear lovingly patting a very safe baby bear in a crib, not flying through the air)
Number 4, Letters J, K, L-Nursery Rhyme-"Jack Be Nimble"
Number 3, Letters G, H, I-Nursery Rhyme-"Little Boy Blue"
Number 2, Letters D, E, F-Nursery Rhyme-Rain, Rain Go Away"
Number 1, Letters A, B, C-No clue on the nursery rhyme, I just realized I was missing this block! Please make sure you receive all 10 of the blocks.

The nesting blocks were purchased for our near 1-yr old daughter. Because of there paper based composition (albeit very durable it is still cardboard), I would not recommend them for a child still prone to sticking things in their mouth. As far as nesting (each block sets inside the other) and stacking for the sake of teaching, these blocks are wonderful! The letters and numbers are easy-to-read and large. The colors and illustrations are exactly as they appear in the book and they stack nicely in a box with a strap to reduce the ever growing clutter in our home.

As a side note, I also emailed Sylvia Long to see about getting a signed copy of her illustrated book, "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" for my daughter's first birthday. I started early anticipating a long delay in hearing back from her. She emailed within hours and was very pleasant to work with. This was an added bonus for sure!
