I bought this book based on the stellar reviews on Amazon. I'm very happy with it and refer to it constantly. I particularly like that the doses recommended are above and beyond the RDA, which is the MINIMUM needed for optimal health (the book cover says: RDAs "are designed only to prevent the most obvious deficiency diseases -- they are the 'minimum wages' of nutrition. RDIs are not adequate for anyone looking for optimal health." The book has handy tables for each vitamin and mineral and breaks down the maximum doses for optimal health. It also lists side effects. Turns out most vitamins are not toxic unless taken at levels that most humans really have to try hard to attain. Most side effects are completely reversible by simply not taking the vitamin any longer.

I trust this book over other sources because it has data backed by clinical studies from reputable organizations such as the American Medical Association and New England Journal of Medicine. Fro example, the book says it's okay to take 400-800 IU of vitamin E daily for heart health. I've seen other sources say it's too much -- presumably based on a study that the media jumped all over that said high doses were unsafe, but the study was flawed by several variables as they were not comparing apples to apples. I think when others recommend daily doses, they are referring to the RDA, the "minimum wage" needed, and not the dose needed for optimal health.

What's nice is that she gives you sample recommendations, so you don't end up feeling totally at sea. And you can take what looks like the right amount, not too many pills. Even so, if you are in bad shape, it's likely to be a couple of small handfuls.

It's possible that I am alive because of the earlier edition, after environmentally caused asthma made me really quite ill for a while. But good grief, I hate taking that many pills. And I was fairly smart about buying combinations.

Being as I am a fully recovered alcoholic myself, I loved the stories in this fine book, and can relate to them. I work with alcoholics, and have noticed that those who discover a faith in themselves and their own concept of a higher power do make a complete and full recovery from the terrible power of alcohol. This faith is not that hard to discover, and is easiest found by doing the simple Steps. Almost as simple as painting by the numbers. Just go over them one by one, and before one is aware, one is surprised to discover a deep faith within. Funny how it works, once I hit bottom and had no where to go, the simple reading and mediating of the steps is what did the trick for me. The stories in this wonderful book are very true, I know because I've been there, done that.

Many members of AA today currently feel that they cannot recover from alcoholism and they will always be recovering. Through the sharing of experience, strength and hope, the authors of the stories in this book show that recovery is not only possible but available. In the Foreword to the First Edition of the AA Big Book it states that the main purpose of that book is "To show other alcoholics PRECISELY HOW WE HAVE RECOVERD..."

Many in AA fear the word "recovered" because they feel that it means that it will give them an excuse to drink alcohol. Those who wrote the AA Big Book attempted to dispel that fear by giving examples of how THEY recovered. Today, many people are not willing to go to ANY lengths to get what the founding members of AA had but would rather live in fear of that first drink and thus be recovering rather than realize a new freedom and a new happiness.

The main purpose of the AA Big Book is to show other alcoholics precisely HOW we have recovered and this book helps to show other alcoholics that recovery from alcoholism is possible and can be accomplished.

Chapter 5, in action. I am a recovered alkie, sober almost 30 years. I encountered this book from a friend. I now highly recomend it to any new person I encounter searching for more than the current 'teachings' in AA. Anyone who is willing to do the 12 steps exactly as written can attain all these folk have and more. The voices in this book tell exactly how it works. The experience of each writter is believable with no pulled punches. It is my belief this book will be a great addition to any sober alkies library. I like the idea of the same writters telling how they got sober doing the steps, and later describing how they found a 'Power Greater than themselves' as stated in the book 'Alcoholics Anonymous'. I can think of about 25 people I would buy this book for Christmas or Birthdays or just because they're my friends. WPG. Recovered Alkie

I was first introduced to Kris Jamsa's books when I first took DOS Programming. When I saw it was written by Kris Jamsa, I bought it on the spot! It is very step-by-step. I used this book instead of the book assigned in my JAVA class. It also comes with software and shows you how to install JBuilder on your computer which I found out is a thousand times better for code writing than Microsoft Visual J++. More raw coding and less Microsoft's invasive code. I highly recommend this for the first time JAVA programmer.

I'm just starting JAVA programming and this is by far the best book I've read on the subject. It mainly deals with programming applets but explains the logic of JAVA programming well enough to extend what you have learned into more complex applications. The problem I've had with other books is that they don't teach the basics and by the third chapter you're completely lost. Short chapters make concepts easy to remember and refer back to. Examples are cogent and apply the material directly related to the current chapter. After I'm done with this book I will have a good working knowledge of JAVA and will finally be able to understand the more difficult books.

After scouring bookstores for a Java book that was to the point, didn't weigh 25 pounds, and best of all made immediate sense, I was pleased to find this book by K. Jamsa.

Each chapter is concise, tells you what you're going to learn, tells you about it, then tells you what you just learned. The ideal model for education!

The chapters are paced well, with little fluff, just well-explained examples. All the graphics are laid out quite well, all in all, a well designed book!

The CD that comes with it has everythng that you need to get up and running, no extra downloads necessary.

Hope that they come out with "Rescued Again by Java", covering advanced topics.

Kris Jamsa has written some excellent C/C++ tutorials, so its no surprise that this beginners guide to Java is just as clearly written and explained. In this volume, Kris is giving you just enough of everything you need to know to get started in the right direction. You'll likely need a more comprehensive reference book (I recommend Ivor Horton's Beginning Java 2) if you want to turn 'pro'. But here's the best thing about this edition -- you get a fully functioning copy of Borland's JBuilder 2 Pro edition on the CD-ROM. That's a pretty nice bargain considering the price of the book. The latest version of JBuilder would costs many, many times that. I would recommend any book on programming written by Jamsa, and this one is no exception.

I was lost in reading on-line tutorials and Java books that claimed to be for beginners. "Rescued by Java" truly came to rescue. It allowed me to built a solid foundations of the language concepts and syntax. I can see it now possible to reach for more advanced books. The book is written in a very thorough way. The examples are simple but so well thought out that all the language concepts are easy to grasp page by page upon reading for the first time. By the way I'm a COBOL programmer with many years of industry experience.

I picked up this book at the library for a potential book report option. My teacher asked us to pick our books so I had to quickly choose between 4. I went to amazon and read the reviews and decided that it sounded okay. That night, I started reading at 9 p.m. I had to throw the book out into my hallway so that I got some sleep. You know when you find a good book, and you keep telling yourself that you'll stop at the next chapter. Well, I did that until I was halfway through the book. It had pulled me in! I always love to read a book with a strong female charecter that isn't completely freaked out by peer pressure or what everybody else thinks. Livy James is that charecter! She has a level head in a world that often people do not. Her dad was a druggie, he barely saw her grow up. But she turned out to be a music lover that had basically one rule. "Musician need not apply" Meaning don't waste your time because the answer is no. But then she meets Nick, the lead singer of The Wolves. The band that opens for her dad on their world tour. She falls hard for this guy and finds that things are not what they appear. Things in the world of rock, are not what they appear.

This book is not for the rock illiterate. I do believe it is only appropiate for those who fully appreciate music. Not Justin Timberlake or Pussycat Dolls, but real music. It reveals the true intimacy of true rock from The Who to The White Stripes. This book is full of passionate love of music and life. And unfortunately in a world where a synthesize drum beats and computer generated noise are concerned amazing music (e.i. "Yeah"- Usher), this book isn't for all audiences.

Liv is going with her dad's band on the reunion tour as a writer for a magazine. She wants to find out what happened on the famous "night in paris" when greg tried to shoot her father and the group split up.
Also on the tour is the band the Wolves. Nick, the lead singer, asks her out and even though they have chemistry she doesn't want to break her no musician rule. She knows all about sex drugs and rock and roll growing up with her dad and she doesn't want to get into that. But Nick seems different somehow. So she decides to give him a chance.
In London Nick takes Liv to a pub where he gets drunk and then back to his hotel room where he tries to have sex with her. When she wasn't ready he got mad and she ran out in tears.
Will they ever make up or will she keep her no musician rule? Read to find out

At seventeen, Livy James realized long ago that her childhood was anything but normal. The only child of Paul James, lead singer of the band the Babydolls, and Anna James, one of the band's former backup singers, Livy spent most of her younger years surrounded by music, drugs, and alcohol. Now she's working for the magazine Rock On, following the Babydolls around the country and writing pieces for all the world to read.

The Babydolls are all older, but thanks to one of their songs being played in a hit movie, they're now on an International Tour along with The Wolves, their opening act. Everyone's there--dad Paul, who is currently drug-free and sober; her father's bodyguard/driver Toby Quinn, who has always been more of a father to Livy than Paul; lead guitar player Greg Essex, who still downs Jack Daniel's like it was water and who also happens to be her mother's ex-boyfriend; womanizer Steve Zane; and the band's drummer, Charlie, who is still in love with ex-wife number three.

Livy's mother is along for the ride, too, of course, along with Livy's own best friend, Cammie. As Cammie sets out to bed Steve Zane to complete Operation V, things become a little more complicated when the girls meet Nick and Kai, the lead members of The Wolves. Livy has always sworn to herself that she would never get involved with a musician of any type, but Nick is proving a worthy adversary to her self-made rule.

Add to the mix the infamous "Night In Paris", a night several years ago when the band disintegrated after Greg pulled a gun on Paul, and the tour becomes a veritable circus. As Livy seeks to uncover the truth about what happened all those years ago, she learns a few things about herself along the way--namely, that love has no boundaries, that parents are tricky creatures with their own hurts, wants, and needs, and that truth is subjective.

I loved ROCK MY WORLD! At times funny, poignant, and downright sad, it's the story of learning to be your own person, that truth isn't black or white, and that love comes at the most unexpected times.

The "Running Start" is essential reading for every parent of a young child. Many parents are feeling the stress of lives that are filled with too many commitments----that are suppose to be benifical for their child. They are concerned about the negative behaviors they are seeing in their pressured child: irritability, acting out, and refusing to participate.

Pica, a national expert on early childhood development, provides pratical suggestions that will help parents create a more balanced life for their young child. Her techniques and activities are based on sound developmental theory and current research. Following these ideas will help a parent design a wonderful environment that will nuture their young child's development in all domains: physical, cognitively, and socially/emotionally.
I highly recommend this book----I believe it will provide support to parents and others who are invovled in the lives of young children. It will help them make good decisions for the child and their family.

Rae Pica has a full grasp of what is, and what isn't important in the raising of healthy kids. Stressing that the 'right' pre-school, the 'right' kindergarten, etc. may not necessarily be right, and may not be necessary. Not hurrying childrens' skills, not enrolling them in every activity under the sun, not aspiring FOR them - these are excellent points made in the book. In one of her Reality Checks, Rae quotes Booker T. Washington when he said "The world cares very little about what a man or woman knows; it is what a man or woman is able to do that counts". This could be the title of this book; and it's an excellent read if you're wondering whether or not your children are getting lost in an "electronic world". And if you are wondering, they probably are, and you should read this very good book!

Physical activity specialist, Rae Pica values childhood. In her wonderful new book, "A Running Start: How Play, Physical Activity and Free Time Create a Successful Child" Pica gives guidelines that will help parents raise children with the right balance of structured activity and free play.
Today's children seem to go non-stop from one structured afternoon activity to another with little time to themselves to be creative and solve problems. Before children can become successful adults, they need to be children and children learn through play. The best way we can give them a "running start" is to help them to succeed naturally, exploring the outdoors, enjoying and inventing their own games. Parents will hopefully use the phrase "Go Outside and Play" more often after reading this excellent book, written by an internationally recognized educational consultant, who really knows kids! Kudos, Rae, from Marianne Berkes, author of nature-awareness picture books for children.

In "A Running Start: How Play, Physical Activity and Free Time Create a Successful Child," Rae Pica, an internationally recognized educational consultant in early childhood and movement education, shares her techniques for raising children "with the right balance of free play and structured activity." According to Pica, "Today, we have considerable research proving that . . . movement, play, and physical activity contribute to brain and intellectual development." Too often, she contends, we're so focused on "achievement" and "competition" that we're not allowing our children just to have their childhoods. We buy them the most high-tech gadgets and hurry them from one class to another, but "old-fashioned play and physical experiences offer the best opportunities for brain development"--NOT "the latest gadgets and gear." This book is also sprinkled with Play & Learn Activities that provide great ideas for parents to bring fun and play back into their homes and yards.

Teach Yourself Acid 3.0 is an excellent resource. Although Acid comes with a manual on PDF, everybody knows that switching between your software and Adobe Acrobat Reader is tedious and a strain on the eyes--which in turn means that you probably won't learn all about Acid's possibilities. With TYA 3.0, you can have the book open while you work with Acid (this alone vastly improves your learning curve); additionally, every chapter (or "hour") of this text has exercises and activities that you can do with the supplied CD-Rom loops. I really recommend doing the exercises--they WILL give you ideas for your own Acid projects.

While it might initially seem a little pricey, the tips, exercises, and CD-Rom make it invaluable.

This book is terrific! I just recently started experimenting with computer music using the ACID 3 programs, and this book makes an already easy to learn program even easier to understand. It is clearly written with the beginner in mind yet will take you as far up the technical ACID 3.0 learning curve as you wish. There is only one change I would make in the contents of Sam's Teach Yourself ACID 3.0 in 24 Hours, and that would be the inclusion of a comprehensive TROUBLESHOOTING section. The book is carefully written in a fashion, that if you follow the instructions to the letter, you should experience no technical problems. But as most will not have the infallibility to successfully follow the instructions without at least a few mistakes, I would wish there be a simple and quick to reference TROUBLESHOOTING section that helps you to easily go back and correct what you may have missed. But with this aside, the book is terrific. Definitely written for actual human beings. Well done.

As a Sonar user, a Sound Forge user, a Vegas Video user, I was completely amazed to discover the power hidden within Acid--whose very name unfortunately causes scornful and undeserved ridicule as with the review below.

Many see Acid as a toy, and it is anything but as anyone who digs beneath the surface will quickly discover.

Acid 3.0 is a professional tool used in professional environments to achieve professional results faster than ever before and where time is money, Acid shines.

For anyone wanting to push this tool past it's apparent limits, using it as the ultimate tool with which to bring together tracks from various sources (including Cubase) this book is essential to understanding its hidden strengths, and workarounds for inherent weaknesses found in some extreme BPM and pitch-shifting tasks. "Acid 3.0 in 24 Hours" is essential to understanding track management, bus usage, FX options, video scoring, and timing adjustments to name but a few.

Do not be fooled. Acid is a most powerful non-destructive digital audio construction tool, although its name may draw prejudice. This book is as worthy a companion and reference as exists for it.

Buy this book. Even the Acid experienced will learn from it.

I'm a fan of a lot of the popular Scheme or Scheme related books (SICP, The Little Schemer, The Seasoned Schemer). While in some sense this book takes a more pragmatic approach than the aforementioned books, it is no less valuable. I found this book helpful as a teaching aid while learning Scheme, and as a reference for my continued use of the language.

Advanced topics, such as continuations and the syntax-rules and syntax-case macro systems, get good treatment from this book.

Highly recommended.

Good book. To the point. Doesn't waste time with fluffy words. Excellent. I learned Scheme in a few days from this book. Scheme is like C on steroids. I like C, I hate C++ and Java. Calculus is entirely about functions, not objects. And I don't see people saying oh, Calculus is weak because it isn't object oriented. BLECH. Teach me to fish, don't give me one.

Good introduction but sometimes lacks clarity.

I purchased this book specifically with a view to learning the Scheme language. The text is easy to read, is pithy and to the point, and generally makes concepts clear and easy to understand. There are however, in my opinion, some sections where the author forgets that concepts are new to the reader and the examples that are used tend to obfuscate the point being made rather than elucidating it.

I have never considered myself stupid, but after my 5th reading of the introduction to continuations I was beginning to worry. A quick reading of another text on the subject cleared up my concerns almost immediately which suggests to me that the explanations are not as clear as they could be. There are some other areas of the book where this sort of assumption makes grasping a new concept more difficult than it should be.

Nonetheless, I still consider this a good introduction to the Scheme language and would gladly recommend it to the aspirant Schemer.

A "must have" and a "must read". Excellent book.

As I said in a past review to the second edition, this book is wonderful. This book has convinced me to migrate from Common Lisp to Scheme. This is a serious book for the one that really wants to learn about Scheme and require careful study and a strong motivation. Please note: if you are really interested to learn Scheme, then this book is for you; if you are not really interested and/or you like to joke, this book is absolutely not for you. The book is accurate, complete, well written and cover all you need about the modern Scheme. I use Scheme for personal study about bioinformatics. Thanks to the Autor.

When I read this book, I loved the ideas more than the excecution of them, in the literary sense. I guess I expected it to be more eloquent, with better excegetics, but I realized that it was not needed.

Some times as a painter, I would keep working on a painting too long, and really make it worse than better. What I was looking for was not needed, it would have muddied the colors Michael was trying to communicate to us.

Thanks for giving us your thoughts, and being willing to share those of others with us in the persuit of excellence in our gifts.

I have to admit, I was somewhat disappointed with Scribbling in the Sand at first... It's not that there was anything wrong with the book, but it struck me as being longer than it needed to be for what it had to say. The book had many good things to say, but it felt like a light read, and I was hoping for something more deep and incisive.

Then, however, I ran across the chapter with letters from various artists and theologians, and it provided just what I was looking for. They were a great contrast with Michael Card's simpler writing about faith and art, rounding out the content of the book with some insightful and challenging thoughts on art as worship.

All in all, this is a good book for someone new to the topic of the intersection of art and Christian faith, and the letters especially are worth reading and re-reading.

Yes, okay, Michael's book is great and I had quite an eloquent review in mind. Then I got to the letter by Harold Best at the end of the book and forgot all about it: get this book for those pages alone. And for Calvin Seerveld's letter, and for the letter from the art guy from New York, and from the Dutch guy. Mallowcups will of course be credited to Mike's account because he had the--what? generosity? halacious acumen?--to include them.

This book should be a textbook companion in the life of every writer, poet, artist, whatever, who belongs to Jesus and wants a clear slant on the creative responsibility. I haven't read another book of its kind, and didn't know I was wistful for it. There are some books that should never be loaned out, and this has joined those few on my shelf. I'll slobber and rave over it, and will remain cheerfully selfish with my copy. I'll buy it for someone else before I loan it, because it will be taken from my shelf again and again for reference.

Having gushed, I will say I'm not sure how I feel about Mike's take on this "getting together" thing, this accountability thing with other artists. I've seen that side, have been there, and the accountability rap can get icky. Stormy solitude is a more compelling place; but I will say, I'm cautiously checking out his ideas and I'll get back to him on it.

Oh, and Mike: the appendix, which you wrote "reluctantly" on the advice of some friends, wasn't needed. You should have taken a bullet on that one. If someone didn't get it before then, how could a didactic play-by-play stick 'em in the guts? I loved it when you said "For their sake, here, reluctantly, are a few ideas." What cheering honesty.

Mallowcups for Mike, the whole package, points and all.

Why should a doctor who can't carry a tune in a bucket and can't draw a stick figure love a book about the nature of art and creativity written by a musician? But I fell in love with this book from the first chapter, for it beautifully and eloquently puts forth a vision of Christianity that everyone needs to hear and embrace. As Larry Crabb describes the book, "Every Christian needs to meditate on Michael Card's message...the result will be a thrilling release of the Spirit from depths you hadn't before realized were there.." I had the pleasure of hearing Michael discuss the themes of this book in a coffee-house: he is a humble and wise servant of Christ, and his writing reflects it.

Michael Card is well-known for his music, and as a Christian author he reaches down deep into the heart. Scribblng in the Sand will challenge artists of all types to use their gifts as worship to God. This is not a how to book. No advice on getting published or how to write better or how to paint or how to improve your talent.
The middle bogged down a bit for me, but the first few chapters and the last few were excellent. Great teaching. Great reading. He includes letters written to artists from other artists. These provide very good advice and were poignant. If you are an artist of any type, get this book and keep in your library.

My company purchased Crystal Reports as the main utility for pulling data from our large relational database. I had never seen Crystal before much less used it. I got my hands on this book today at 12:30 p.m. By 1:17, I was pulling data and manipulating reports like a pro. I would recommend this book to anybody who has to learn Crystal in a hurry.

I was searching for a book for a friend and ran across other books on running for seniors. Those reviews weren't very good, then I remembered this book that I read a couple of years ago. I realized that it was still timely, informative and the best info I've read on how to run safely until you're 100. I've followed the information in this book and it has allowed me to resume my running passion, place in races for my age group and just be content with finishing.
For those who say it may be a little difficult to follow the eating suggestions, it is much more difficult to watch friends and family succumb to the diseases of affluence...routinely having their chest cracked open for heart disease, going blind from diabetes, and enduring chemo. Ruth's program really works, you feel so much better, and interestingly, is similar to how the Olympic Kenyans eat. Well-researched, she quotes the works of Dr. John McDougall and Dr. Neal Barnard. Their work and books ought to be worthy of Nobel Prizes, for all the hundreds of thousands of people those doctors have helped over the years! I have just finished reading Ruth Heidrich's latest publication. Found it an inspiring read for a vegetarian who aspires to veganism "most of the time". Ms Heidrich has obviously written this book to encourage readers to take that first step in thinking about their nutrition differently. May I say though that Ms Heidrich's dedication to veganism and competative running could present as daunting to the average punter who is looking for direction around lifestyle changes. This is acknowledged by Ms H. who does encourage her readers to start off slowly and work towards goals. I am planning to order Ms H's. cookbook and work towards refining my diet using ideas already discussed in this publication. MmmmmYum Yum...Kale & Celery for Breakfast..??? Reframe that (a technique Ms H. discuses in her book)... So much better than Beta Blockers & Anti inflammatories for brekky. More Please.

Dr. Ruth's personal battle resulted in extensive research done by her for the benefit of all of us (male or female). She wanted answers to why she was ill and discovered that her illness (and its causes) were not all that unique. The rarity is in applying the information to one's lifestyle. Don't sit back and wait for yourself to become ill, use preventative measures to promote good health long into your "prime years" so that you won't have to be at the mercy of drugs, doctors and nursing homes like many of our parents.

This book was very inspiring, and motivated me to start a daily exercise program of walking and running.

This is an incredible book. I purchased it in June of 2006 and as of July 2006 I have already lost weight without any pain and frustration. It is easy to follow the advice and the facts are backed up by the research that was done. I am happy to say I have lost almost 12 lbs and the pounds are continuing to come off.

This is an easy read book and it is working for me. I have even given my 20+ year old son a copy. You are never to young to start taking care of you body.

This book--this author--has changed the lives of several people I know including my own. The information contained within far exceeded my expectations for this book. It should be read by everyone. I would have given it 10 stars if I could have.

You should know that you will not get this information from your doctor. Most doctors know very little about the impact of nutrition and exercise on the most common diseases since it has not been until recent times that nutrition and fitness has been taught in medical schools. I especially recommend it especially to people of any age who are trying to prevent or overcome cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, arthritis, alzheimers, obesity.

I promise you will be inspired by this book! [...]
