I am a huge Alias fan. I found this book to be a great addition to my Alias collection. The book is very interesting with details about the characters, actors, design sets, and just about everything. I was interested in how some of the actors and actresses have kind of created their own characters behind the "script". It was a very fun and exciting read. I would reccomend this to anyone who is a fan of alias. You will not be disappointed as this book is entertaining AND informative, which is quite hard to find these days. If you enjoy Alias, you will love this book.

This book was a great read. I think that all fans should have a copy! I couldn't put it down for hours!

People have been going on to me to watch "Alias" for some time, So having purchased the 1st 2 Season from Amazon UK, I sat down to watch them.
Nearly through Season 1, a friend told me about a making book on the first season, but had never brought it, so I search Amazon UK and it wasn't listed. I then came to Amazon US, and found it and took the plunge and ordered it.
It arrived within a Week and the book included the DVD.
If you like the series and wonder whats goes on behind the scences of a TV series like Alias, then this is the book to buy.
The DVD gives gives you some small interviews and breif look behind the scence, which is an added bonus, but it is the book that has the pulling power.
When do we See a Season 2 & 3 Book?

This is a great book for anyone that is hooked on the spy show, Alias. I didn't start watching until the second season, so I got it to give me background on the episodes, characters, and stories. There's lots of great behind the scenes info, and facts about the cast. It's a fun, must have book for everyone that's been sucked into the world of Alias!

Naturally, I bought this book because I loved the show, and wanted to know more about what goes on behind the scenes of this underrated drama/action/suspense thriller. Every episode brings out an edge-of-your-seat feeling, and it makes you wish that the hour was much longer. This book was great, it even includes a cd-rom so you can watch a few extras. It also includes storyboards and costume designs (still, I wish that there were a few more examples). It also includes an episode guide on every show from season 1, including a few tidbits as well. Certainly a must for any fan of ALIAS, or even for those who appreciate great writing!

It's amazing how much is assumed in most after-market Java books! I can't estimate how often I've seen, "It is assumed you know about Threaded Programming, and therefore it is not covered here." Well, good news, It IS covered here. And is is covered well.
As a professional programmer for 20 years, I can attest to the fact that Thread programming is the most schizophrenic of disciplines. In addition, since most legacy thread concepts come from 'procedural' languages, the Java implementation tends to be hard to hold on to.
I found this book to be a wonderful 'primer' into Java's Thread capabilities. It doesn't attempt to relate to older languages. It starts from the begining, and presents its subject clearly. It's a good learning tool, and is organized well enough to be a reliable refference.
Even if you have experience with threading, this is worth it to orient your head to Java Threading.

If you find Doug Lea's "Concurrent Programming in Java" too daunting, this is the book you should have read first. The examples were easy to follow, and were to the point -that is, you will only learn how to work with the Thread API, and there is not much talk about design patterns. The diagrams in the book were very handy to follow Hyde's explanation. I enjoyed reading this book.. I recommend this book for every beginner in java programming.

This is a good book to learn Thread fundamentals and how to use thread in Real Life. The code examples uses a lot of AWT thats why the 4 stars I would have been a little bit happier if it used something else.
Any way a good purchase for learning Thread I brushed up my knowledge on Thread before sitting for the SCJP

This is a particularly easy to understand book on Java threads. If you are new to Java or to threading then don't hesitate to buy this book. The topics are clearly explained and in a logical order. The examples are small enough that they are easy to understand, but big enough to get the point across. And they work! Mr. Hyde has clearly gone to a great amount of trouble to make his presentation clear and simple to digest. As examples the diagrams he presents for explaining a deadlock and the timing of events in a wait/notify sequence make what is going on very clear.

If you are an experienced thread programmer looking for the finer points of threading, this book might not be the best. It does not go into the level of detail that some other books do, for example Holub's book "Taming Java Threads". On the other hand, these books are not the best for beginners.

Very straightforward and gentle introduction to the Java threading mechanics.It features basic theory and examples for about 3/4 of the book with the rest of the pages dedicated to a few useful techniques to ease and streamline threads programming, which you can use in you applications or as inspiration and examples for your own devices. My only complaint is the presentation method: a bunch of code followed by a bunch of explanations. I think presenting the more relevant lines of code interleaved with explanations and then the whole example program would make learning much more effective and easy. This book is also starting to show its age, so until a second edition comes out I would recommend the O'Reilly book over this one, unless you can get it real cheap.

Amazing results and pretty easy! Believe me, you can lower that colesterol and still eat well! Following a few suggestions in this book--I wasn't even that strict---oat bran, niacin, more vegatables, avoiding transfats ect, my total colesterol dropped 116 points in SIX WEEKS! My "bad" colesterol went from 177 to 80. The book is easy to read and you will learn tons about how your body works.

Since the author has actually used the program for many years on himself, he really knows what he is talking about. The program makes you feel that maybe we can really beat this coronary heart disease. He gives some very good advise about what to eat and what supliments to take. Just be sure you don't try the niacin without your doctors following. It does work, but some people (like me) cannot take it without it causing problems with the liver. Very worthwhile book.

I got my total cholesterol down from 275 to 191, Triglycerides down from 221 to 96. LDL down from, 182 to 118 and HDL up from 49 to 54.
This was accomplished in 10 weeks by rigidly sticking to the zero saturated fat recommendation and half heartedly trying the Niacin regimen.
I cut out cheese, milk, whole eggs, etc. and substituted with olive and canola oils.
I have since ramped up the niacin regimen to the complete doses recommended by the book and will see if I can improve on these already impressive numbers.
Try it, it works.
UPDATE - 10 weeks after the review above I had my lipids checked again and my total cholesterol is now 133; that's pretty amazing considering my
total was 275 just five months ago and I have not taken any prescription medications. My LDL is now 75 (down from 182) and my triglyserides are now 71 (down from 221). I am actually concerned my cholesterol may now be too low. Great advice!

This book is an excellent read with practical, easy to follow diet changes. My cholesterol went from 257 to 187 in 3 months time. In addition to reading this book, I used recipes from the American Heart Assoc. cookbook, excersized almost every day, and read the "Cholesterol Down" book. This book has helped me understand how to change my life for the better, giving me the information to understand why I needed various diet adjustments.
In particular, I really enjoy the muffin recipes in the back of the book. And typically eat 2-3/day! Benecol also now makes a chewy caramel that I used to help get my intake of plant stanols/sterols as per the recommendations.

I skimmed through a copy of this book and then purchased a copy for myself. It is very readable, yet covers an immense amount of detail.
I made the decision to follow this program out of desperation.
My doctor practices medicene, and medicene says old guys like me with bad lipid data should be taking Statins drugs. Another lipid exam was conducted at the end of six weeks.
Total Cholesterol had dropped from dropped dramatically, weight had come down 6 pounds, and no problem with kidney enzymes was indicated.
Bob provides specific information, specific sources, phone numbers and a sizeable index of web sites.
It is a fun book to give to friends that are experiencing the frustration
of life with high cholesterol.

I am an experienced developer but fairly new to VB.NET. This book is not for beginners but it is great for someone like myself who knows what they want to do and just wants some good examples and tips. It's a great reference book and a good alterative to Google. The English is clear and to the point. The book is a sturdy hardback and the pages are well laid out. It's easy to read afters hous of staring at a screen. To sum up, I'm glad that I brought it. It has saved me time and money and you can't ask for much more than that :-)

There is a lot of information in this book, covering a broad range of subjects. It is well laid out and easy to reference. The CD comes with the current version of the book as well as the author's previous book on VB6. Not really a beginner's book as there are more intermediate and advanced topics. I had not used .NET and hadn't touched VB6 in a couple of years. I needed a resource to help jump from rusty VB6 skills to .NET - this book did it perfectly. It is also filled with advanced topics that I am not currently using but now know where to go when the need arrives.

Fast service, great quality... What more can you ask for. I recommend this seller.

I bought this book few years. It is an excelent source of information and writers style is very clear. I just came back to see if Balena has book for C# 2005. Looks like I found something. I am going get that one. However, present book is quite good, check if there is a newer release you may want to get that one.

This was the first .NET book I purchased, and in many ways if I hadn't bought any others it would have been sufficient. It has thorough coverage of the .NET environment, with lucid code examples in VB.NET. I found the chapters on ADO.NET and the framework internals to be most useful to my job as an ASP.NET developer, but the coverage is deep enough that a person with very little programming experience could read this book and come away as a well-rounded .NET programmer. Even if you're writing in C#, as I am, the book is worth the money. I would also recommend Dino Esposito's Programming Microsoft ASP.NET for more depth if you're a web developer.

This book is a great reference and historical record of the emergence and use of remote viewing from inside the military machine. A great addition to all serious remote viewing researchers library, its well written and one of those hard to put down books. There are a few good books on remote viewing and this is so far the best in trying to create a historical overview of RV and address many of the inaccuracies of the previous historical overview book (The Secret History of America's Psychic Spies).

This is also a great reference tool for anyone trying to fathom the 89,000 pages of CIA remote viewing documents released through the Freedom of Information act.

Paul Smith has produced a wonderful book here. It captures so much detailed information that it should make a wonderful documentary source. Yet, it is written so clearly that for those who have read other books on the subject (like me) it is very easy to skim to the parts that contain new information, insights, and details (and there's a whole lot of ALL of those throughout this book!) This book is a must for anyone who wants a more complete picture of the subject matter, as well as a feeling of greater familiarity with the fascinating and enjoyable personalities of the players involved.

I'd suggest Paul Smith's book to students of self discovery and military historians alike. Reading the Enemies Mind provides a concise and engaging history of our nation's remote viewing program. Those seeking to further advance their potential will discover many advanced concepts that have yet to reach mainstream society.

What I most enjoyed about this book was the author's optomistic view of the future of remote viewing. The abilities to tap this newly discovered area of human potential have yet to be fully explored. This newly discovered science holds great promise and may someday lead to a cure for disease, advanced education and furthering our intelligence and understanding. Perhaps someday our political and military leaders will use this potential to advance our civilization rather than simply using remote viewing as a military intelligence gathering tool.

While various forms of remote viewing have existed since the dawn of civilization, Paul Smith carefully documents the proven effectiveness and scientific reality that refutes serious critics and encourages those with a limited understanding. I'd recommend this book to anyone seeking a more advanced understanding of their human potential.

Reading the Enemy's Mind is a fascinating history of the Star Gate program. I've read accounts of a couple of other former Star Gate participants and they are either sensational and fictionalized (David Morehouse) or short on history (Dale Graff). Paul Smith's account is comprehensive and doesn't make wild claims. His tome is a level-headed treatment of the program. He's very upfront that for every success there are many failures.

Some of my favorite successful remote-viewing stories from Reading the Enemy's Mind include viewing Aldrich Ames - the CIA traitor, the USS Stark attack, and the capture of rogue DEA agent Charles Frank Jordan.

In 1987 Star Gate was tasked with finding the mole in US intelligence. CIA sources in the Soviet Union were disappearing or being executed and people wanted to know who was giving them away. Star Gate came up with a composite of the traitor. Among the details was that he drove a gray European car and was involved with a Columbian woman. While many of the other details were off, Smith wonders what might have happened had the Star Gate information been used:

"The fact of the car alone might have significantly narrowed the field of possible suspects in the CIA. How many CIA employees owned grey European luxury cars in 1987? Certainly some, but percentage-wise not that many. And how many CIA employees had a significant relationship with a Latin American woman, especially a Columbian?" (p. 340)

Smith remote viewed the "accidental" Iraqi missile attack on the US destroyer Stark 50 hours before it occurred. He described the colors of the attacking military ("tan uniforms with black belts and bits of red and green."), the unprofessional nature of the attackers ("they reminded me of a militia as opposed to a professional military"), and the explosion itself ("The structure/vessel shivers, shakes, quivers. 'There were a 'clang,' a 'screech,' and a 'metallic squeal...'").

A final story I'll share is that of the rogue DEA agent, Charles Frank Jordan. This agent had turned bad and escaped custody. The DEA was convinced he was in the Caribbean. A remote viewer thought he was in Wyoming. "This information was so out of line with where Jordan was thought to be, that at first the authorities were inclined to ignore it. Finally, one agent decided that it would do no harm to alert police in that part of Wyoming.(p. 384)" Jordan was apprehended shortly after that - in Wyoming!

I highly recommend Reading the Enemy's Mind.

I have read a lot of books and articles about Stargate, but the majority of the material here was a surprize to me. How did this all start? What were the early days like? Why did the CIA pull the plug? What kind of results were they really getting?

The history is exhaustive, with many exact dates names and locations. However, the book is not dry at all. A nice touch is Major Smith's own story woven in. Yes history is about people.

There's a great section in the beginning that calls to task the so-called skeptic James Randi, and how his research is flawed, slanted, inaccurate, and often made-up. The book mentions specific falsehoods and areas where Randi just made stuff up to support his point. This is ironic because the psychic research is strongly controlled here while Randi is guilty of the falsehoods he projects on all things paranormal.

RV works. The book cites a lot of research, some published in per-reviewed journals. There's an amazing comment from a peer-reviewer who didn't want a study to appear in the IEEE journal who said something like, "I don't care if it is real, I don't want to believe it." This gives you an idea of what so-called legit science does with research outside it's accepted box.

Major Smith has written a great history of the psychic spying program. Cold War buffs will find it fascinating. Paranormal researchers should find it fascinating. Anyone who likes a good story will enjoy it.

Michael's book is wonderful!!! It is a weekly read for me and has added so much to my gratitude for my recovery. This book truly embraces and passes on to it's readers the BEST of the 12 step recovery rooms. So much wisdom is found in AA, yet... filtering through some of the "nonsense" shared by individuals at an AA/NA/OA,etc. meeting is not always easy for the person seeking recovery.
Seeking "the Wisdom to know the difference" for our recovery is when God truly blesses us with that very GIFT! I suggest we use the Wisdom of the Rooms as a format for some awesome recovery meetings! Michael Z. has given us the perfect book to do that. with!

Each time I read this book I get something new from it. Reading a quote from this book is like attending one of those meetings that changes your soul, and Michael Z's interpretations seem to reach out connect with me on almost every level. The spiritual wisdom in this book touches those in and out of recovery, and the people I've given it to not only identify, but often buy copies to give as gifts - it's that's kind of book.

Quotes like "When fear knocks on the door and faith answers, no one is home", seem to be just the thing I need to read when I pick it up. I can literally just glance at any page and find something that speaks to me right when I need it. Whether I'm struggling with my concept of God, or with my fear, or even with setting healthy boundries ("No is a complete sentence"), it's all here for me.

If you're looking for a book of spiritual yet practical wisdom that can fill your well with faith and hope, this book will become a favorite of yours, too. For an "on the go" person in recovery like me, this is like the blackberry of 12 step meetings. Any page I open in this book, seems to give me exaclty what I need to read at that time, to give me a spiritual perspective on any situation. The way the author explains the quotes with ease, and then allows the readers to internally answer some questions regarding the quote, can bring tranquility to a turbulent head.

I wish more books on recovery were written this way.

I have been in AA for 15 months and love the new life that I have been fortunate to receive. I was a beginner at database usage, but I was able to pick up the nuances of ADS through the use of this book. It is my main source of reference for questions concerning ADS, and has helped solve many of my problems. ADS is a great resource, and this book is the ultimate companion.

Whether you're an Advantage expert or rookie this book's a keeper as both an introduction and a reference. If you're looking for a low cost, maintenance free, high performance, scaleable database that you can learn to use and deploy in a day, this book and the included companion CD contain everything you need to get started.

Lots of modifications are available which is great for me. I am just now getting back into yoga and so this book has been a great jumping off point for me. I also have some of Beth's DVD's, (not the one recommended with this book), but it seems all of Beth's DVD's and teachings provide many options for all levels, without being too easy once you've mastered certain poses and sequences. Also, I agree with a earlier comment here, the layout of the book is fantastic! With pictures on one side and images on the other, its really easy to plop the book down while practicing and then flip from pose to pose, creating your own sequences with a great reference guide.

As a yoga instructor I look at yoga books with a critical eye. I love this one. In fact after reading it and going through some of the yogafit sequences, I actually signed up for and took a yogafit teacher training. This is now the only style I want to teach. It is a blend of Iyengar, Hatha, Ashtanga and Vinyasa yoga.

This book has very clear, large photos and easy to follow instructions. I use it almost every day. Modifications for almost each pose are given to make it easier.

This is an outstanding reference for those new to yoga as well as a more seasoned practitioner. The information is clear, concise, does not confuse and overwhelm you with too much detail. There is enough information provided to move you safely through the asanas and suggested sequences at the end. I especially find the book layout quite handy for quickly locating the pose I am interested in. All the photos appear on the left page, with the text information on the right so you can fan quickly through the book to locate what you are looking for. The back section includes complete sequencing for three levels of practice, and the final portion shows asanas that will particularly enhance several sports activity that you may be engaged in. Having personally heard some of the really weird ideas people have about what yoga is and does, I applaud Beth's fresh and unintimidating presentation of the physical benefits of this practice.

Don't listen to the negativity being thrown around by some about either Beth Shaw or her program. Shaw has built a program of real Yoga for ordinary people seeking to start down the path of Yoga. Yes, her program attempts to simplify Yoga by removing Sanskrit and chanting -- but that doesn't mean her variety of Yoga is any less authentic. I see it as no different from what other Yoga instructors have done around the country by using English translations of poses and focusing on communication of the health and energetic benefits of Yoga poses.

And, by the way, YogaFit teachers do train in the esoteric aspects of Yoga (meditation, Chakras, philosophy, ancient texts and Sanskrit) when they participate in Shaw's Yoga Alliance approved program.

Shaw has built quite a following, with people traveling all over the country to take classes with her. Her style is simple, elegant and easy to understand, just like this book!

This C++ core language book is so often used that I thought it may deserve a review.

I own 3 books about C++ and this one became the reference. Only 200 pages (compared to the 1000 pages of another one :) but every useful feature is well explained. Authors payed careful attention in order to prevent the reader to fall in common traps. Lots of examples, always accompanied with relevant comments.

C++ in a core language really answers the questions the beginners have in mind. Concise, pragmatic, the authors are not showing off, they simply remember they were beginners one day and their explanations are exactly what one can expect. Well, I'm so happy about this book (this morning again, I was looking for a reminder about "virtual" functions or a detail about the copy constructor and all my worries were answered with no ambiguity at all) I went straight to to Amazon for a review :)

This book is relatively short, but many people might see this as a good thing, since it is really intended to transition C programmers to the basics ("core") of C++. I believe it does a decent job of this, although there are some topics (such as const) that I think it should cover but, surprisingly, does not. I liked the comparisons between polymorphism in C and C++, and the explanation of virtual functions. The examples are pretty good. There is some great humor in the book, and some parts actually made me laugh out loud. Overall, I would suggest the book to any C programmer who wants to transition to C++. Get this as your first such transitional book, then once you understand the basics, move on to a more comprehensive intermediate level book.

C++: The Core Language is a well written book and a pleasure to read. It appears that that authors made an extra effort to remove unneeded verbiage. I appreciate this because I have so much to read.

The bread and butter OOD concepts of abstraction and polymorphism are well covered. The chapter on templates covers this difficult subject well, however, I would have liked to have seen a little more on template functions.

I came from a Kernighan and Ritche C background (the "C' bible), and this seemed to pick up right where they left off. You could call this book K&R part II, and it is also about the same size. If you want a complete C++ bookshelf, I would also recommend buying (in this order) Effective C++ by Scott Meyers, The C++ Standard Library by Nicolai Josuttis, and C++ in a Nutshell by Ray Lischer.

This is an excellent book for C programmers coming to C++ for the first time. I found the writing style and organisation of topics to be very good. The authors describe key object-based and object-oriented concepts first using familiar C constructions and then extend those ideas into the C++ domain. The ease of transitioning from C structs to C++ classes was very good, as was the discussion of subtle points like the copy constructor. Almost all major C++ concepts are described, including inheritence, virtual functions, and even templates.

My only negative criticism is that the authors leave out some important C++ functionality from their view of the C++ "core." They only mention in passing the use of const, considered by many to be vital to good C++ design. Also, since this book was published in 1995, it does not discuss the C++ standard library, which was finalised in 1997. It is therefore missing a discussion of the very useful 'string' class, among many others. Readers should defininitely follow up on these topics.

Regardless of this missing information, this book will give C programmers a solid foundation for using C++.

As an undergrad and passionate dbl major, having read many books in C and C++, this book quickly became my friend. It's a good read for those breaking out of C to C++. This book helped me cope with the shock experienced while I was trying to learn ADTs, BSTs, splay trees, skip lists, multiway tries and extendable hashing in the high level programming courses where if you asked questions you'd look dumb. The information in this book made me feel contiguously good while sitting in class. It also served as another perspective and filled in the gaps that the professor and school text left out. Also, pick up Robert Sedgewick's Algorithms in C++ 3rd Edition, which is also a splendid read.

This book is outstanding. I found my 12 year old son crying in his room because he knew that something was happening to him that he didn't understand. Soon, thereafter, he wouldn't go outside at night, he was afraid to go to school, the checking rituals were exhausting him, the popups (explained in the book) were frightening to him......all of this developed shortly after he turned 12 years old. Once it began, it felt like each day, something new and confusing was happening to him. Because I have some understanding of OCD, I was able to recognize the symptoms, but I did not know how to specifically help him. He started seeing a counselor, we had other support, I tried to educate myself, using all available avenues, to try to help my son, and our doctor was involved, as well. Although our doctors and counselors are wonderful, ultimately, I spend the most time with my son, and I knew that I would be doing the "work" with my son to help him deal with OCD. This book taught me how to communicate this issue to my son and it worked WONDERS. Within about four months, my son had control over these issues. It did take several months of hard work, but I saw progress with each week It's been 18 months and he has no symptoms. He's functioning absolutely fine in our family and in the community (school, sports, etc.) I've read several books on this subject and this book is what 'turned the key' for us. I read it and then he and I have read sections of it together that pertained to him. He was relieved to know that he is not the only person that deals with this issue, that what he was going through actually had a name, and as soon as we were able to identify it, he and I were able to begin to talk about how to help him. This is an amazing book and I am so thankful to the other reviewers that recommended this book. Until you actually go through something like this with your child, you can not understand how exhausting OCD can be for the child and how helpless you can feel as a parent. This book explains what OCD is and how to clearly help your child with their specific symptoms.

I bought 3 OCD books from Amazon and so happy with all three of them. They are books that you have to keep going back to make sure you understand and doing what it tells you to do for the sake of your child.
OCD is not fun for children with it and they need our help to get them out of it if all possible.

Excellent book for parents of a child (no matter the age) who is struggling with OCD. Gives good insight and tips for helping your child along the path to wellness.

This book was recommended by my 9 year old daughter's counselor as a guide for parents and it definitely hits the mark for me. Beginning with 'What is OCD' and moving towards the 'What to do if you suspect OCD', this book is written in a clear, detailed way. I found myself slowly reading, and sometimes re-reading sections of the book prior to moving forward. It's filled with a lot of information. Take your time and soak it in and build on your knowledge.

Eventually you will get to sections of the book that focus on treatment and what parents can do to assist their children in combating OCD. The book alone will not 'fix' OCD, but it helps guide you to recognize it and what you can do; as a parent, to help your child. The book lets you know you are not alone and there is hope for getting your child, family and life back on track and away from OCD's grasp.

I have shared this book with my daughter's grandparents and her teachers. It really has helped us all to gain knowledge as to what is OCD, and how we can not let this bully take away the joyful spirit of those who are dear to us.
