While working on a 90 page directory for our church, complete with written history, pictures, and lists of official acts in columns, I ran into a few formatting questions. I ordered this book and I found it answered my questions in lanugage I could easily understand, point by point, after looking up the difficulty in the books' Index. I highly recommend the book to those using WordPerfect X3. The boxed "Tips" on many subjects from the two authors are a nice plus.

I found the book to be quite useful in adapting to WordPerfect Office X3. My only complaint: My copy started falling apart almost as soon as I started using.

I've been using WordPerfect for about 20 years or more. It's a fine WP for anyone writing books. I bought this resource book after getting the X3 office suite and I find that even though I thought the upgrade of the word processing feature was not much advanced over version 6 or 9, the "Using" book shows me otherwise. I need it to make sure my investment in X3 is fully realized. It seems clear, complete, and with enough detail to keep me busy when I need to know something.

Superb manual for a superb program

I've been a WordPerfect user (and never much of an MS Word user) ever since adolescence. A major attraction for myself and many others being the Reveal Codes function. However, this review is not about WordPerfect vs. MS Word, but about the book Special Edition Using WordPerfect X3.

One of the most important features of a book such as this (which is about 2 inches thick) is its index. I find the index to be well laid out, easy to read and a good combination of bold and plain text. There is also a Contents at a Glance on the very first page, as well as the Contents proper.

New features of WordPerfect X3 are listed on pages 2 to 7. Note that I don't consider the addition of the Yahoo! toolbar, and the Y! icon (which I couldn't get rid of - it kept reappearing) as enhancements. This is clearly a commercial move rather than purely an enhancement, which brings me to my only complaint with this book, it seems to lack a critical edge. Not once in the whole manual is there a "bug", nor "plugin". Come on, let's get into the workarounds and tweaks! Anyway, this isn't enough for the manual to lose any stars in my opinion.

The ease of pasting unformatted text from other programs/documents (an essential feature - done in a more round-about way in MS Word) is described on page p339. I use this feature all the time, I'm very pleased to learn (p339 - again) of the shortcut key Ctrl+Shift+V to do this very quickly.

Just to go back to the WordPerfect vs MS Word debate for a minute. The #1 downfall of WordPerfect is becoming more and more clear in our globalised world: The lack of unicode support (especially obvious when it comes to Asian languages).

Overall: Highly recommended. Special Edition Using WordPerfect X3 complements the simplicity and comprehensiveness of WordPerfect itself.

Excellent guide to the best word processor

Having used WordPerfect since version 4.1, it remains my word processor of choice. When forced to (usually when dealing with other people's files with multiple inserted images) I can grit my teeth and use the "other" program, but I always bail out of it and get back into WP as soon as I can.

This guide is big and user-friendly, and fills the gap caused by software makers providing less and less in the user guide department. On-screen help and PDF on-disk manuals have their place, but there are times when nothing works like a hardcopy manual that you can tag and make notes in and that doesn't clutter up the screens you are trying to work on. This guide is well worth the price if you only need it once in a while.

Actually, this looks like a WONDERFUL course! As a homeschooling mom of 3 very bright girls, I give this a thumbs up. All the kids can use this course, despite their learning differences. My 8 year old and 9 year old READ way above their grade levels with wonderful comprehension - but ask them to spell "comprehension" and they're lost! This course with CD is a great tool to use for my sight readers AND my phonics reader. We're looking forward to completing it. Grade: A+

spelling without anxiety

Whether you are learning or teaching, the techniques used in "Spelling Power" are very simple to use. Instead of the ole' Study, Test, Study method- you are encouraged to do the opposite. The first day is spent taking a placement test (about 10-15 minutes) to see where you start. The next day, you administer the test of ten words first, and only study those words that were incorrect. There are many study ideas, and games that help with the study process. The next day you give the next test of ten words, along with the words that were missed the day before. If more than 5 words were missed, then you only administer the test with the incorrect words, otherwise I could see how self confidence would be an issue if you had a 30 word test by the end of the week. We use this book with our 8 and 10 year olds. They no longer dread spelling, and have a great feeling of accomplishment by the end of the week when they can prove that they have "mastered" between 20-50 words. The reason that I gave this book a "4" instead of a "5" is because the teachers guide in the front (which is a necessity to read) is 100 pages of Blah, Blah, Blah, You need to plan on either a couple of hours of UNINTERUPTED reading (yeah right, not in this house) or, do as I did and use a highlighter and skim at 15 minute intervals. The book also comes with a CD rom, which I couldn't get to run on either of our two computers. The publisher is sending me a new one though. All in all we like this program, and even though it's $50, (for a Spelling Book!) It's not just a spelling book, it's 15 minutes a day towards being a sufficient speller which can be used all they way through High School. I recommend adults take the placement test and try it for yourselves, you will be surprised. I know I was.

Great book, very useful for diagnosing where your child stands in his/her knowledge of the rules of spelling. Once you've used the tests to see at what level your child spells, you have lots of creative ways to reinforce and upgrade their skills...this book is fantastic! I recommend it not only for those parents who homeschool, but for those parents and students who want a great teaching tool for improving spelling acumen in preparation for a spelling bee.

Although the program is designed for ages 8+, I bought it for my homeschooled 5 year old who has been reading since age three. The results were immediate and he is whipping through the lessons painlessly. Minimal time required per lesson, only 15 minutes for the student and 5 minutes for the teacher. I highly recommend it, though it is expensive.

My now fourth grader was using another spelling program in 1st grade and got really burned out. It was the traditional study the list all week, write the words, pre-test on Thursday and test on Friday. She and I both hated it! Since we switched to Spelling Power, she asks "Can I do my spelling first?" Everyday, you test them over a designated list of words. When they have spelled 3 wrong, you stop. They study the words they missed using a 10 point study program (all lined out in the record book they use). The next day, they first re-test on the words they missed, and then go on to the next set of words on the designated list. The placement tests show you exactly where to start and where your child is according to grade level. Although it is designed to use starting with 8 and up, I am using it with my 6 year old, too. She was jealous of her sister getting to do this spelling. She does great! We just move slower. The teaching of study skills is powerful! Get this program! Don't be overwhelmed with the text. Take the time to read it before you ever start. On a daily basis, no preparation is required. Annually, you give placement tests. That's it!

It will bring you trouble if you are new to programming.
By "trouble" I meant the book is very successful in teaching u how to build a solid programming foundation, thus you will have hard time with your teacher's assignments.

I have read some other books about C++ before and found "no problem" in them because after reading, I have no clue... and of course, I don't do the assignments.

The choice is yours.

I am a computer Science student. Like any other computer science curriculum , C++ is the main programming language that is taught in any University .This is an excellent book for anyone who is starting to learn C++ programming. The language , examples and the content of this book are better than any book available in the market . I actually learned C++ reading this book , as prior to this i had no experience in programming. This book will teach you everything that u need to know in C++ programming. Well ofcourse C++ is really vast , you really dont need to know everything that is on the book , so anyone who buys this book should get a syllabus or discuss it with someone who has had prior experience in C++ programming to what to study or what not to .
Highly recommended if you are serious about becoming a programmer.

I purchased this book for a C++ course I am taking. I have found it very easy to follow. I also like how the author does not get bogged down in minutiae or jargon but quickly gets into topics that are usually reserved for later--such as file processing.

Great for Students--Not for Self-Study

This book is used as the textbook for the class in C++ I am taking. It makes no assumptions about previous knowledge in programming and is very thorough in testing your understanding as each concept is presented. It has obviously been tested in the classroom as it anticipates many of the questions a beginner would have about programming and the C++ language.

The book includes a C++ compiler by Borland so if you have a Windows computer you can follow along with the programming exercises. There is another version of the book that has a Microsoft compiler instead of the Borland compiler, but you have to make a special arrangement with the publisher to purchase it (according to information in the book).

I would recommend this book to people who are new to programming as well as to the C++ language. I have tried to learn C++ on my own with other books and was frustrated--they would start too basic (how to turn the computer on) and would introduce subjects in a haphazard manner ("here is a list of all C++ operators and what they do"). This book develops its topics in digestible chunks of information with each chapter building upon the previous chapter.

This book won't teach you everything you need to know about programming or the C++ language, but it will give you an excellent start.

I would like to add to my review that the book does have errors in the exercises that could seriously frustrate a reader who doesn't have an instructor or other resource for outside help. Some exercises can only be solved using concepts taught in later chapters, which I believe is an important flaw.

There are also typos in the example programs that could derail someone studying without assistance from an instructor. I still believe this is a very good textbook, but now I believe it should either be avoided by people learning programming on their own, or be used with other C++ reference works.

Reading this book gave me amazing insight and exploration into what Robert Holden calls `true success'. It made me think - a lot - about what success is really all about. With much personal warmth and openness, Robert invites you to explore in depth all the possible trappings of success and equally the wisdom, grace and love that comes about with true success.
Success is about so much more than I ever thought and this book opened my eyes to thinking deeply about success in my own life and how to look at it and approach it from a more positive, whole place than before. The sections of fear of failure and fear of success were fascinating and the tips at the end of each section very engaging and helpful.

A sincere, personal and thought provoking read and the kind of book that you can pick up again and again. If you ask yourself, what is success, what is true success? Then read this book.

An Essential Book for All of Us

Review Date: 2008-07-09
This book is not just about fertility, but about how all of us, especially
those of us trying to get pregnant, can live a healthy life and about how our bodies work. In so many books of this type, I have either been bored or confused by what I've read. Dr. Dao and Ms. Herko not only explain things in simple layman's terms, but the writing itself is interesting, fast-paced and sometimes even funny. Ms. Herko uses metaphors that are right on target in helping to explain what would otherwise be complicated concepts. I actually put down a novel I was reading in order to finish this book!

What pulled me in the most of course, was the testimonials by women(women's voices) and individual stories or journeys of Dr. Dao's patients.
The connection to our lives, the human and emotional side of us, is what
makes this book so compelling, and has motivated me to look into many of the doctor's healthful suggestions. The authors have shown me that it all really is quite simple and sensible.

I highly recommend this book to everyone: buy it, read it and keep it as a reference.

Good advice for healthy living overall. An inspirational read to help you focus on what's really important and maintain a healthy lifestyle (spiritually, emotionally as well as physically).

In particular, I found qigong exercises very helpful. The advice on what to eat/not to eat was also helpful. Although some recipes seemed like too much work, it is probably a small price to pay to ensure that you are healthy and fertile naturally.

I picked this book up for a friend, but after skimming through it, realized that I wanted to keep it for myself, a 55 year old cancer survivor. The writing is very engaging - I kept wanting to learn more! Many of the health principles are applicable for anyone. Who doesn't want her body to be in balance and healthier? This book just makes so much sense. It is written so clearly and is so fascinating that I'd recommend it to women of any age.

THE TAO OF FERTILITY is a powerful, informative and uplifting self-help book that is a must-have for any woman who is having difficulty getting pregnant. It is written in an easy-to-ready style that intelligently speaks to the reader; it is almost as if you are in Dr. Daoshing's office, getting advice from him directly! I learned alot about Chinese medicine and its value as a complement to Western fertility practices. What I found particularly compelling, having gone through the infertility process myself, were the poignant stories and quotes from numerous women who had dealt with this trying condition. The co-author, Dana Herko, a Daoshing patient who attributes the miracle of her own hard-to conceive children to Dr. Daoshing's fertility program, further lends credibility to his healthy, easy-to-follow holistic approach. There is even advice for women who must, somewhere in their quest to have a baby, resort to other means of making this dream come true. Dr. Daoshing describes the road to having a child as a journey, and indeed this book is a roadmap to the final destination -- a baby of one's own. I highly recommend this book and wish it had been available to me during my challenging years of trying to conceive.

Thank you Dr.Schulze for the inconvenient truth this country so direly needs. I was raised on 70% or so of his teachings before I even heard of the guy about 2 years ago. Since then, I've bought hundreds of dollars of his materials, and herbs for myself and my family members. The more I've read and implemented his teachings, the better my health has gotten. I've even cut back my "health care" insurance way back to only cover major expenses that I'd need in say an accident or something. The hundreds of dollars I save each year no longer go to the incompetent quacks/ insurance industry, but to investing in REAL health care and education. WARNING: If you don't believe in self discipline or personal Accountability, then his material is NOT for you. Western Medical doctors gouging you PHYSICALLY and FINANCIALLY may be better suited for you in the treatment of your SYMPTOMS, illness, or dis-ease.
I'm not bitter, just passionate about the truth after being lied to my whole life by the "experts". BUYER BEWARE: there is also a lot of quackery in the alternative health care arena as well. Apparently...yesterdays hippies, revolutionaries, etc. become todays self serving opportunists...

Dr. Richard Schulze is by far the best person to be acquainted with if you're concerned about your health. This book, along with all of his other publications, and his monthly newsletter are essential. He's a medical doctor, but he heals using only nature. His continuing education and his experience have enabled him to answer any question you may have with accuracy and honesty. He's uplifting, and motivational. If anything will get you off the couch and working toward perfect health, it is this guy. He's a kick in the pants, just when you need it.
Read his books, go to his website, (800herbdoc.com) order his products, or make them yourself---but get to know this man and listen to what he has to say.

He's not in this for the money. He will give you a catalog with the recipes for all of his formulas, and even encourages you to make your own, if that's something you're interested in doing. I've been making my own formulas for years now, but I continue to use a few of his, simply because it's less expensive to buy them than to make them.
After 12 years of trying unsuccessfully to get pregnant, I got his female formulas and took them for 4 months. Finally, after years and years of seeing doctor after doctor, trying procedure after procedure, including IVF, IUF, ART, etc., to no avail, I am on my way to becoming a mom. And I'm finally free from the symptoms of fibromyalgia, migraine headaches, chronic bowel problems, etc. I was very, very sick when I first heard about Dr. Schulze. Watching his videos gave me hope for the first time.

Educate yourself. This man helped me save my life, literally, and he can help you save yours.

Rawlings does a first-rate job of conveying elegant solutions to very arduous problems. Those without the budget for a commercial product will especially appreciate do-it-yourself practical code and easy to follow examples.

This book provides practical advice and examples on integrating XML into existing business systems. The book is easy to read and follow. The approach of the book is to break the problem down into a chain of simple problems, addressing each as a data 'filter'. The end result is to connect the input/output of a legacy system with the input/output of an XML parser.

I recommend this book to anyone faced with the problem of using XML to extend the reach of existing applications.

Mike Rawlin's book deals with the reality that legacy business applications are not readily converted to processing XML-formatted information. While XML works fine as the interchange format, you need to convert between that interchange format and the format your applications understand. Mike covers all of the minor nuances that you need to consider, presents a wealth of knowledge in an easily-understood format, and provides examples to boot.

The most usable book I read in ages

Review Date: 2004-01-22
A lot of IT people are busy making different applications running on different platforms "talk" to each other. XML was invented as the "Esperanto" of the IT world to get these systems to understand each other. In practice however it just isn't that simple, as most of these applications don't talk XML yet, until this book.

This book is a real do itbook. It does not teach you XML or XSLT but shows you how to use it. What I especially liked is that he discusses his design considerations, he wants you to understand the whys. Once he thinks you know the basics he goes back to his basic design and improves it to make it make it fully reusable and modular, making it even beter.

Mr. Rawlins gives you toolbox of utilities, with the source code, that can become the building blocks for your own application integration system.

I have not come across a book with as much usable code in my IT career. We have already redesigned quite a few of our systems because of it. If you are into connectivityyou cant be without this book.

Ps. The word Legacy in the title does not imply big mainframes.

Unpretentious and Useful

Easy to read, in a refreshing unpretentious style, Rawlins explains numerous complicated concepts associated with using XML. Especially useful are the chapters covering the conversion of EDI formatted data into and out of XML and the converting of one XML format to another XML format. The inclusion of Java and C++ considerations in appropriate chapters provides excellent practical advice.

This CD set offers listeners the opportunity to explore how they feel about their weight, about the role of food in their lives, and about love and what it really means. Each session leads listeners through an examination of a new way of breaking free from emotional eating...and it's not about dieting. While this is a radical idea, it touches something true inside, and Roth offers Eating Guidelines to help us navigate our way through the forest of our own experience of life and to hear our own voices.

How we eat is how we live, and how we feel about pleasure, deprivation, hope, despair, fear, happiness, and the whole range of feelings and experiences defines our lives. She postulates that the old, hurtful, voice can be replaced by our own spirit, and that we can learn to transcend what we believed as children and to find real peace as adults. We can be ourselves and welcome the possibilities of the future. We can learn to love and care for ourselves.

Listen to Roth, here; she makes incredible sense. She knows how it feels to be caught up in feelings about weight and personal value, and you will likely recognize yourself in her descriptions...and find your way home to yourself using her tools. Work with the meditations and exercises provided, and follow your heart to living a truly radiant life!

I really like a lot of what Ms. Roth has to say, but was extremely disappointed because in purchasing this audio-book, I was hoping that I was acquiring a resource that I could turn to for comfort, as I do with some of my other Sounds True audio-books. That will not be the case with this one, unfortunately, because I find Ms. Roth's voice inflections to be exceedingly annoying at times. When she speaks normally, I have no problem, but I actually take my ear-buds out when she uses her dramatic or sarcastic voice (which is a lot). Bummer.

I just bought a couple of her books. Hopefully her writing style isn't annoying.

"I believe in listening to the hunger of your body, and of your heart. Begin to actually look inside and see what it is you really, really want with your relationship with food, and how to get there." ~Geneen Roth

Geneen Roth offers hope and practical advice in this informative and revealing look at why we all eat. Everyone seems to have some issue with food and if you look around at diet books, this becomes very apparent.

So why don't diets work?
What are the secret reasons people eat in their cars?
Do most people gain the weight back?
Why should you eat without distractions?
Is food really a mirror of your relationship with love, life and
feelings about yourself?

Geneen Roth offers lifestyle choices that go beyond dieting and access our inner awareness. She explains how you can say goodbye to the dieting nightmare and become aware of what your body needs. Through this program you learn to analyze your eating habits to find out how you can change your life by changing the way you eat.

"Most of us turn to food when we feel unhappy, sad, angry, or rejected. The next time you feel an uncomfortable emotion, rather than immediately reaching for the comfort food, be curious about the feeling." ~ Geneen Roth

By gaining a deeper sensitivity to the reasons we eat what we eat we can heal the beliefs that cause the suffering, guilt and pain of making destructive food choices. Guided imagery and visualizing the past helps to uncover issues that we will face in the future.

The highlights of this program include:

The Hunger Scale
Seven Eating Guidelines
Embodiment Meditation
The Voice of the Super-Ego
What does your body want?

Geneen Roth brings up some excellent points about bringing a sense of peace to our lives through a deeper awareness of why we eat. She has worked with thousands of individuals to help them reach their weight loss goals without the need for a specific diet. "When Food is Food & Love is Love" is a program to encourage the development of new lifestyle skills and healthy attitudes about food.

Great Book for XSL and DOM!!

About half of this book is very Microsoft-specific (HTML applications, behaviors, etc.) However, the sections on XSL and interacting with the XML DOM are outstanding and contain much better explanations and examples than I've seen in any "pure" XSL book! I consider myself an XSL expert, but I still learned a great deal from this book. It's enabled me to write simpler, more concise and more efficient transformations. You can skip the Microsoft-specific stuff if you want and this book is still a great value.

I was interested in this book to provide the components for building web applications. The book provides all the information in an easy to read manner so that I can create an application utilizing current web technology. The technical information provides information about Advanced IE functionality, DHTML, XML, ASP, and Web Scripting which allows me to write applications using the examples in this book. The example code was very useful which allowed me to integrate the sample code into new applications. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to integrate all these technologies in their applications.

An essential resource for learning to write creative nonfiction

This book may not be 100% comprehensive (a tad redundant, perhaps), but if there is any other one out there that has more to offer on addressing the varieties of style, structure, form and the creative nonfiction process, I haven't seen it. Being new to the business in 2003 when I began working on Waiting for Westmoreland in earnest, I found the instuctions and insights illuminating, inspiring and confusing all at once. How to choose?! I felt like Alice on her journey after the rabbit. Still, it gave me plenty of techniques to consider--that would not have been as readily discernible had I simply tried to read every book of actual creative nonfiction I could get my hands on.

Does Creative Nonfiction Exist?

Over the past several years there has been quite a controversy as to what exactly is creative nonfiction.
In fact, there are some who even go so far as denying its existence and claim there is no such animal!
If we are from the school that accepts that it is alive and kicking, we must then be able to describe what exactly is creative nonfiction.

Carolyn Fauché and Philip Gerard, editors of Writing Creative Nonficton, perhaps best sum up what it is all about when they state: "creative nonfiction has emerged in the last few years as the province of factual prose that is also literary-infused with the stylistic devices, tropes, and rhetorical flourishes of the best fiction and the most lyrical narrative poetry. It is fact based writing that remains compelling, undiminished by the passage of time, that has at heart an interest in enduring human values: foremost a fidelity to accuracy, to truthfulness."

In order to support their belief in creative nonfiction, Fauché and Gerard have presented more than thirty essays that examine all of above key ingredients inherent in writing creative nonfiction.
Divided into three sections, the reader will receive tips pertaining to such topics as researching ideas and structuring the story, reportage, personal reflection, developing powerful observation techniques, awareness of the filters that put you between yourself and the world, shaping the lyric essay, creating biography, war writing, using humor, and taking yourself out of the story.

What is quite noteworthy about the book is that the reader receives valuable advice from over thirty well- known writers such as: Terry Tempest Williams, Allan Cheuse, Phillip Lopate, Carolyn Forché, and Philip Gerard, all of whom contribute immensely in convincing us that, yes, creative nonfiction does exist.
It may be true that it has undergone many name changes over the years- nonfiction novel, narrative non-fiction, literary journalism, literary non-fiction, and new journalism, however, they all lead us to the conclusion that no matter how confusing it sounds, creative nonfiction is still distinguishable from daily journalism, academic criticism, and critical biography.

The book also offers a primer on the practical business of drafting a business proposal as presented by Stanley Colbert, and a section about what happens after publication.
Finally, as the editors most aptly state: "as a final gift to the reader, we've included the `Creative Non-Fiction' reader offering the companion pieces and other exemplary essays to inspire, delight, reach, and simply to enjoy."
