I've been using this cookbook for years. It is my "go to" cookbook when I want to bake something fabulous. When my son borrowed it, then lost it, I ordered a new one, because I use it so much.

Try the date bars. And the Louisiana banana pie.

Staple cookbook for any dessert fanatic!

I have had this book for over 10 years (!!) and it gets regular use in my kitchen. The simple recipes are easy enough for kids to make but delicious enough to please dinner guests. The recipes are fool-proof; I've never had a bad outcome. Everything from the pumpkin pie to the sticky "sinnabuns" (which I made for Easter this year) are wonderful! A definite crowd-pleasing cookbook.

Like the other reviewers, I cannot believe that it's been 10 years since I got this cookbook! It is amazing. Very simple and straightforward, with delicious recipes that are pretty easy to make. Two of my favorites are the Hershey's Kiss "Kookies" and the Panda Bear Brownies. But everything is so delicious. Okay, I am making myself hungry so I'm going to end this review. Get this book! You won't regret it.

This is a novice baker's bible! I have prepared many recipes from Alison's book and all have been well received. In fact, I never have to worry about leftovers because there are none!

I look forward to the next family and friends function so I can bake something out of this book. It is very easy to follow with easy to find ingredients. Two favorites: Blueberry Buckle Pie and Charleston Lemon Chess Pie.

Want to really know everything about the Great White?

Review Date: 1997-11-11
In recent years, public opinion on the Great White Shark has turned away from the fierce bloodlust inspired by fiction and returned to the more civilized sense of awe and wonder at the amazing size and ferocity of these giant predators common to the days before Hollywood brought us 'Jaws' in its technicolor (mostly red) splendor. With specials common to PBS and the Discovery Channel, public awareness of the GW is higher now than ever before, making the shark more and more popular to study. The results of this scrutiny are brought to light in 'Great White Sharks : The Biology of Carcharodon carcharias', a collection of scientific papers edited by A. Peter Klimley and David G. Ainley. In this fascinating work, the picture of the GW as bloodthirsty killer is erased and replaced with the image of the predator's role as king of the sea. There are papers dedicated to nearly every scientific aspect of the animal from its ancestry to its behavior to its populations in oceans around the world. Nearly every serious question about the GW is explored, if not answered. The only thing that makes this book a little inaccessible is the fact that is geared for academic use and research. It is not a book written for the masses, such as Ellis and McCosker's 'The Great White Shark', another excellent book on the subject. But if it is depth you are looking for, Klimley and Ainley & Co. provide it. This book is not to missed by serious students of the GW.

This is a great book for girls, encouraging them to get into sports. Shows a group of about 8 girls (and 2 boys) learning gymnastics. The kids look to be around 8 years old, but my 3 year old loves looking at the pictures and trying the gymnastics moves. The photography is beautiful and the text is very informative.

This book is pictoral in nature, and follows the progress of a group of young students during a series of gymnastics classes, ending with a competition. The photography is beautiful, and basic gymnastics skills (stretches, splits, cartwheels, etc.) are demonstrated by the students. The book is geared toward young girls, probably around ages 4-8. However, the photography is excellent and the storyline is not too terribly babyish for older fans to enjoy, too. This would be a great addition to a gymnastics library.

I have a 5 and 7 year old that are in gymnastics and really like the book. There are many pictures and descriptions on how to do what is involved and what they can look forward to as they progress. Great book.

I'm a massage therapist and used part of this book to study for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCETMB). This book is really helpful for showing you how to take a client history. This book is needed because it shows you the legalities and proper way to run a massage business. Documenation protects you in cases of audits and also is a source for assessing the client's progress and contraindications. I also studied the following for the National Certification Exam:
The Ultimate Study Guide for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork: Key Review Questions and Answers (Volume 1), (Volume 2), and (Volume 3)
(Author: Patrick Leonardi)
The last 3 books helped me to prepare for the type of questions encountered on the national certification examination. I highly recommend all 4 books. I passed the first time with the help of these books

I've watched this book evolve over a number of versions. Each one gets better and better. Yes, at times Dianna Thompson appears obsessive but on the other hand, that's what makes it great. Recently I was asked to write a detailed case summary that will be used as evidence in a lawsuit for a client I saw over a year ago. My SOAP notes are what saved the day for me. Thanks Diana. This book is essential for anyone working in a therapeutic environment.

obsession with documentation is now the future of massage...

Review Date: 2002-07-11
Her first edition of "Hands Heal" was a collection of forms used for charting massage therapy sessions. When I saw the new book on the shelf being three times as thick as the first I thought "Oh my what more can be done with charting!" I now understand her obsession with charting. It is not just charting your sessions, but learning to communicate what you do, so the medical community and the public will begin to understand massage therapy as a healing modality. Communication starts with the therapeutic relationship with the client. Healing begins when the client becomes involved in the process. Then you can pass the information along to all parties involved - the lawyers, the doctors, whoever. If you document every treatment, you will be able to find out what is working and what is not with each individual. Documentation can assist you in builing your practice and support the massage profession as a whole. I particularly liked the section on ethics as she supports the idea of peer groups, mentoring and supervision as a means of development for the practitioner. I believe the future of the profession lies in those areas.
If you are a massage therapist in any state, this will guide you to a successful practice whether you are involved in billing insurance companies or not.

I am a big fan of Oscar Wilde, and this just proves even more how wonderful a writer he is. These stories are for the young and the old. You will laugh and cry. Wilde writes them in such simplicity that they are absolutely wonderful. I personally cried at the end of the story "The Happy Prince" and came very close to doing so for a good number of the other ones. Don't just think that these are sappy kiddy stories though because there is also a great deal of Wilde wit and sarcasm in them. You can't help but smile and laugh. This is really one of those books to share with your friends.

Interesting book with pretty fairy tales in it

Review Date: 2003-05-16
I like this book because there are a few little interesting short stories in it. The fairy tales want to tell us something about social problems. If you read this book it opens your eyes so that you can see that there are these problems in our society too. But the book is also good for little children, because the fairy tales are written in a nice language. They are very pretty,
My favourite story in the book is „The Selfish Giant". Because first the Giant is very selfish and doesn't want the children to play in his garden but afterwards he sees the happiness of the children when they play in his garden and this gives him happiness too. Also the relationship between the little boy and the Giant is great.

Nine lovely, tragic tales

Review Date: 2002-01-12
I am no expert on Oscar Wilde, but I've been reading fairytales long enough to be able to tell the difference between an enchanting story and a bunch of pap. The nine magically airy yarns in this small collection are definitely in the first category.

"The Happy Prince" and "The Selfish Giant" are perhaps the most famous of the nine. In the first story, the golden statue of a prince weeps for all the suffering people he sees and begs a swallow to strip him of his riches and distribute them to the masses. In the second tale, a giant builds a wall around his beautiful garden to keep out the noisy children, only to find out that he has also locked out the Spring.

"The Young King" is a variation on the theme of "A Happy Prince". When a young monarch learns of the suffering and misery caused by his requirement for a robe, a crown, and a sceptre, he refuses to handle any of these riches and is given a more fitting raiment by a Divine Power. Keeping with the royal theme is "The Star-Child", about a beautiful but horrible young boy whose physical appearance grows to match his ugly spirit. Another little bird appears in "The Nightingale and the Rose", to help a young man win the heart of the woman he loves.

The stories' themes include beauty, tragedy, agony, compassion, innocence, and (Platonic) love. Some characters give their lives, or sell their souls, in the name of love. There are also the same archetypes that appear in dreams: the Divine Child, the Trickster, the Wise Old Man or Woman, the Number 3, and more. Add all this to Wilde's delicate writing and gilded imagination, and you get some of the most original tales ever written.

Though most of these stories end happily, all end tragically. That is to say, even when the endings are happy, someone always dies. Each story manages to associate everything thrilling and exquisite about beauty with the starkness of death. Accordingly, not all of these tales are suitable for children. For example, one scene in "The Fisherman and His Soul" features witches dancing before the devil and the princess in "The Birthday of the Infanta" is a heartless child whose mockery leads to the death of a little dwarf. Though the stories are moral at the core, and often explicitly Christian, they do not always make sense.

Despite the faults, the keening, poignant loveliness shines through, making me want to read each story again and again and again.

I highly recommend it.

If just one teacher in every classroom bought this book and began to present the ideas of love and respect, autonomy and trust in the classroom (each and every classroom in the U.S.) the questions on the news would be answered.

Many of the problems in education seem to stem from alienation of individuals in the classrooms of America. Children are forced to feel apart from the class rather than being an integral part of the class and their own individual creative learning experience. The Naropa Conference was clear and honest in the formation of the new class curriculum. Respect for each and every student. Love as the main ingredient of the daily interactions.

If just that one (as in every one) teacher, bought the book...could undedrstand the message, and would apply it to his or her life, alienation and pressure to perform would be relics of an antiquated system destined to doom and failure. Children would begin to become the bright radiant suns of learning and personal growth rather than the reflecting moons of past educational process.

Highly recommend. A must for every person involved with children, from preschool through 100.

We recently found out our son has genius IQ, auditory processing problem and needs occupational therapy for his handwriting. Problem is, we live in Kuwait where there are no services in private schools. I ordered several books and this one has given me the most help to help him. We are working through it and he is reversing his b and d's less and learning organizational skills. So often it is assumed that kids know how to do all these things, but they need to be taught how. Thank you for putting together a sequential set of activities to help children. It is also written in an easy to understand way.

It's not that I haven't thought about some of these things before, but this book reminds me to observe behaviors I sometimes overlook in the press of daily teaching chores. You know how special education teachers are always seeking ways "to change the brain". Well, it is apparent that it is also Ms. Gold's objective and she offers effective examples to get a teacher moving in the right direction to do this.

Review Date: 2007-02-20
The author, Lise Pyles, and I have known each other most of our lives. We were best friends in elementary school and lived just across the street from each other. Interestingly, we both had children diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome, which kind of makes me wonder about whether environmental factors might contribute to the rise of this condition, since we both drank the same water growing up.

Lise and I lost touch throughout much of our adult lives, but when we reconnected some years ago, she was a wonderful source of support to me while I was homeschooling my daughter. (My kid is the one in the book who loved mules, when all the other little girls were into horses.) Every time I would email Lise, wondering whether I was doing the right thing or if I was on the right track, Lise would write back with positive observations that I had not been able to make myself. That's because I was in the thick of it--the everyday challenges of homeschooling made it hard for me to step back and make observations about the overall progress that was happening.

What I loved about Lise's book when it was later published is that it was just like the actual conversations we'd had, by email and in person, about homeschooling an Aspy. She is a practical, down-to-earth person who can wisely see how Asperger kids are able to flourish when they're taught at home, without the distractions, transitions, and other challenges that occur at school.

I'm happy to report that after about five years of homeschooling, my daughter was able to handle the social challenges of attending a private alternative school. The years when we home schooled prepared her for going out into the larger world. In her school, where they practice democratic decision-making and where students initiate their own learning experiences, my daughter has continued to grow socially. As with many Asperger kids, we never had to worry about my daughter's academic abilities, but we did wonder if she would be able to stand being in a room full of other people, and now she can do that and fully participate in school meetings. She has important jobs at school and at home, and we don't really worry about whether she'll be able to function as a working adult in a few years.

Lise's earlier book, "Hitchhiking Through Asperger Syndrome," also helped prepare me for the possibility that some years it may be better to home school my daughter and other times it may be better for her to be in a school setting. That's what I like about Lise's practical approach and advice. She advocates that you stay in tune with your child's needs and continue to evaluate how to get those needs met. I think this is a realistic approach, because there is no one-size-fits-all solution for how to educate your child.

Strategies involving utilizing and capitalizing on the child's particular area of interests were particularly helpful to me. I look forward to future texts by this author as I plow through the joys and challenges of knowing my Aspergers student, I can use all the help I can get!

Absolutely fantastic

It is hard to believe Lise Pyles packed so much into such a thin little book. She expertly balances the personalized POV of a mother who homeschooled her Asperger-affected son for several years with the POV of a self-taught expert on raising kids with Asperger's. The book itself has a very conversational and personal style, sympathetic to the parent's concerns without ever being patronizing.

The book is not comprehensive about any one particular topic, but gives practical and diverse starting-off points for many issues facing AS-affected homeschooling families, including tackling the mindset of teaching the "whole child" instead of just academics, how to choreograph tailored social opportunities for all ages and gauge their successes, childhoood depression vs. AS kids' real need for decompression and heaps of alone-time, how to keep a proper perspective and avoid burnout, how to model social skills in everyday situations, the concept of "learning styles" through the lens of Asperger's and how AS kids employ them in slightly different ways, lists of practical life-skills and social skills at various age and developmental levels, special issues to consider when homeschooling an AS child, lists of web sites that help with teaching face recognition/ idiom use/ communication/ "sensory diets," brief curriculum reviews, and many other subjects.

Again, it is amazing that so much information was successfully packed into such a slim volume. The author achieves this by employing the frequent use of well-organized and well-conceived bullet point lists, and the nearly dozen appendixes are a wealth of AS-specific information not just for American homeschoolers but for families in Australia, the UK and Canada as well.

Aside from the concise and robustly practical nature of the information in this book, what I found most helpful is the positive and upbeat point of view of Pyles herself. In every chapter, she includes real-life success stories, including her own as well as that of 40 other AS-affected homeschooling families. But the real boon of these is that she gradually redefines what "success" really means - not the best grades or the most awards or anything like that, but that even things that look like "failures" on the outset can be viewed as successes with just a slight attitude shift. For example: A trip to the museum that ends in a meltdown after an hour. The meltdown might be perceived as a failure at first, but the fact that a sensory-sensitive child survived an hour at a noisy, confusing museum is a success. Nuggets like this are peppered throughout the book. I suppose she is "modeling" what it looks like to turn lemons into lemonade. =)

This book has changed my entire perspective on raising and educating an Asperger-affected child entirely at home, 100% for the better and with great heaps of optimism. I am now going to order her other books, and hope that she knows how much her work has helped people.

I am reading my way through this book. It's been great to receive confirmation that a lot of the things that I'm doing are right on. There aren't too many people I can talk to about Asperger's Syndrome. This book gives me ideas and resources that are quite helpful. Another home school mom actually referred me to this book. Asperger's Syndrome is a fairly new diagnosis, so I expect that more will be known and written about it in the next 10 years.
