I purchased this to use while homeschooling my first grader. He is a good reader so he has been doing this study independently. This is one of the first things he wants to do everyday. He often does two lessons a day because it is so fun.

Excellent mapping practice for little ones.

In our home state of VA, mapping is required in kindergarten. Our regular homeschool curriculum does not include mapping or geography at the kindergarten level, so I use this handy resource for our mapping lessons. There are 36 weeks worth of lessons, each including a map and a couple of questions to answer about the map each day of the week. The questions are separated by day, but you can easily complete as many questions as necessary to fit into a one or two-day a week geography lesson.

The information within this book follows the SOLs fairly closely with definitions like "a map is a drawing of a place from above" and "you use a map to find places". The questions are short and should be relatively easy for young readers. Pre-readers (like my son) shouldn't have any trouble answering the questions if they have them and the answer choices read aloud. There are also transparencies that match each of the map pages included in each lesson.

I like the variety of the maps in this book. There are maps of rooms, communities, states, a zoo, a county fair, etc. There is even a treasure map! Lessons include using a map, understanding what a map is, understanding what a map key is, and using a map key. I like that the maps are visually appealing to youngsters without being too silly and they are easy to read.

This book includes information on national geography standards and a teacher page with advice for each lesson. There is also a simple glossary. The pages are perforated and you can give these to students individually without handing them the entire book. Of the very many educational workbooks I have purchased for our classroom, this one is definately the most usueful.

This is a good introduction to maps, including how to use map keys and compass directions to find locations on the map. A wide variety of maps are introduced, including fictional zoo maps, theme park maps, city maps, along with explanations of the globe, the world map, the seven continents, and various state maps.

After each map, there are a series of questions, two per day, Monday - Friday. At the end of the book are transparencies, for overhead projectors, for each map in the assignments.

My four year old loves this book. We do the full weeks questions in one sitting. We tear out the overheads and write on them with transparency markers, making our own tour routes and finding locations. It makes learning maps very fun.

I have used extensive grammar and language texts with schoolchildren. And they would hate it! Now I use this book
and it is rather quick, efficient, and to the point.
The children enjoy their sessions as they learn.
You can have them practice handwriting as well as grammar and punctuation. It is really great.

The books offers a review for many skills children should know. It's a usefully tool to begin class with and have children review what they know. There are questions for each day of the week for a 36 week school year. It has helped my students review concepts they have learned.

With educational and testing standards getting more and more difficult, it is nice having a tool to provide students with practice with language arts skills. These Daily Language Practice sheets give 1st graders a daily dose of basic editing (adding capitals, basic spelling errors, punctuation). They also include a variety of other activities including sorting words, yes/no questions, rhyming words, and other fundamentals. The Friday sheet always has a different and more lighthearted activity. There is also a Daily Math Practice book and I xerox them back to back and use them as bellwork. Both are half-sheets which are completed in about 10 minutes. Highly recommended!

Great book ! It mimics exactly what is being used in the classroom for the weekly language test. The exercises in this book have helped him to understand better and feel more confident in correcting the grammar. Exercises are brief and clear. Answers are provided in the back for the parent (as a refresher for themselves !). I recommend this book.

Practical Language - Challenging, yet fun!

Review Date: 2008-02-26
Excellent practical application book of concepts in the English language. The emphasis is on sentence structure and word usage (like verb agreement, capitalization, punctuation, etc.), and the analogies are good in terms of reinforcing word meanings. The only thing missing for me is the instructions for the concepts covered. For instance, explaining the use of quotation marks would have been helpful (my son is more of a visual learner than auditory - so having instructions written out helps him understand the concepts better than a lecture from me). In spite of this, my son likes this book almost as much as I do!

What I LOVE about it is the daily practice and review. I am a firm believer in small doses of practice everyday - makes a real difference in holding onto a concept. My only regret is that I didn't find this kind of book 2 years ago! You won't be disappointed!!

I have shared this book with other teachers and they have all since bought their own. I would highly recommend this book to any educator.

I have been a sub teacher for the last two years and am getting my own classroom this year, teaching 4th grade. I was very pleased that I remembered about the DLR (Daily Language Review) book from my time as a sub. My schedule at my new school is a little crazy, and the morning DLR will fill up the extra few minutes each morning perfectly. It is perfectly appropriate for the grade level, and I am anticipating a fabulous year of growth thanks to the Daily Language Review book!

I am homeschooling my 4th graders and wanted something language/writing related that I could do quick reviews and enable me (the teacher) to find areas that need reviewing. It takes only ten minutes or so to complete the five problems each day. It's a quick easy assessment for me and a great review for the kids. The book has problems for everyday of the week and a place the kids keep record of their progress. Some of it is easy and when it's not mini lessons are born!!! I believe in DOL!

This book is excellent for an individual child to use at home or a teacher to use in his or her classroom. I used this with my fourth grade class for morning work or for remediation. Pages are easy to copy or to make overheads. Answer key is available right after each selection, which is nicer than searching in the back of the book. It touches upon all Language arts skills in a nice format. I highly recommend this book!

At first glance this book looks like it is simply another children's book but once you open it the beautiful, full color photos speak for themselves! The book is 100% full color and shows a variety of men and women of different Plains tribal affiliations and their routines of daily life. Everything from styles of clothing to weapons, to men's and women's roles is covered in accurate, deatiled photography accompanied by brief commentary. Each subject is attired in meticulously replicated regalia done by the author who is a well known and respected Plains Indian authority. Another nice feature is the addition of a resource page listing historical sites of the Great Plains region. For such a small price tag this is one book that should be on every American history buff's bookshelf! You will not be disappointed!

Michael Terry's "Daily Life in a Plains Indian Village, 1868" is a wonderful book that, although geared toward children and adolescents, provides a colorful overview of the ways of life of the Plains Indian peoples for all readers. The full color, large photograaphs on every page are incredible. Northern Palins replica makers and craftworkers will also find a wealth of close-up photos and descriptions of tools, weapons, and art to which they can refer in their work. If you wish you could see the Plains Indians in the full color splendor for which they are known then this is the book for you!

Good Choice for Beginning Math Problems - a review of "Daily Math Practie, Grade 1"
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-22
I really like this workbook. It is not one of those that's in color, but the layout is simple and clear without a lot of distraction, which is something that not all of the books in this category can claim.

The idea is that you do 5 problems per session, with a small quiz at the end of five sessions to make sure the information 'stuck'. We have found (and I'm now starting this book with my second child) that 5 problems are so easy and fun that we sometimes do more than one unit a day.

Besides the clear format, the other aspect of this book that I like is that the problems aren't all presented in the same format. For example, right off the bat, they have horizontal arithmetic problems along with a word problems and pictorial problems.

A horizontal problem:
3 + 1 = ____

Word problem :
Tom has one ball. He buys one more. How many does he have in all?

Picture problem:
Well can't paste a picture, but here's an example: The picture will show four pennies and the question will be "How much?"

Four Stars. We have found this an excellent workbook that can be easily understand. Five problems at a time is generally not too much, even for active children like mine. This book however is ONLY a workbook with exercise problems. Parents and others looking for HOW to teach math book will have to look elsewhere. May I suggest "Math for Your 1st and 2nd Grader" by Steve Slavin. Math for Your First- and Second-Grader: All You Need to Know to Be Your Child's Best Teacher

I am so glad that we found this book! Five problems a night makes math FUN, rather than WORK for my child. So much so that he will do a few days worth of problems in one sitting.

The book has variety to keep him interested, and he's learning new skills from it also. I will definitely buy the grade 2 book for next year.

I'm a firm believer of practice early on math. It will build kid's interest and confidence for the long run. This book is invaluable. It breaks grade 1 math into small pieces and let your child do a little every day. My son learned a lot from this book. He often asks further questions and thinks a lot more. This book helped him do well in math. In the Beestar online math contest (...), he often wins honor mentions. Highly recommend.

I used this book for after-school review with my 6-year-old son. The format (5 problems per day, including 1 word problem) worked great. Used on a daily basis, it provides just enough repetition to do the trick.

You get a total of 180 sets of problems, broken down into 36 weeks. Each set takes up 1/2 of one side of a page. The book provides lots of variety in its problem sets. All in all, this book delivers what it promises, and then some.

Highly recommended.

This is such a good book for each grade. I highly recommend it. They are short problems for each day and my twins don't mind doing them once a day (sometimes they even do more!). It reinforces what they already learned, which gives them the confidence to continue. This book also challenges them on other types problems that require me to explain, but the concept here is to get them thinking and possibly even get them prepared for what they will soon cover in school.

This was my daughter's favorite book last year. She begged me to get the third grade one for this coming year as well. She liked the different themes every week (she would try to guess the next theme and enjoyed the anticipation). The problems themselves were solid (made the kids think) but not overly tricky. She solved 95% of them with no guidance at all (I will state math is her strong subject though). Overall, this is a great book to get kids enthusiastic about word problems.

If you are looking for a way to stay sober as an alcoholic, I suggest this book, one page for each day. and the strange thing about it is, that it usually covers the problem (solution) that you are bugged on that day. It has simple and short sentences to remember throughout the day. I have read it now for 3 years and I'm still sober!!

I have used this meditation book as a recovering person since 1983 and have given it as gifts for years. This is my favorite of these type books because it is not purely Christian in its focus. There are quotes included by many diverse authors(Epicurius, Homer, Thomas Merton, Emerson, even Elizabeth Barret Browning to name but a few). It also leads one thru the twelve steps as a suggested program of action rather than a guilt obsessed "should book".

I don't think we as human beings actually recognize the power of daily reading, meditation, and reflecting. Practicing these powerful principles allows us to remain mindful of the moment and reflect upon the deeper question in our lives. To devote ourself to a daily meditation and to journal on these quiet times is priceless and will certainly aid in the evolution of our soul. For me this practice has allowed an awakening to take place and opens my life up to all the opportunities that are available in this universe. Please give this practice a try! This book will help you in your journey of living and cultivating an active consciousness in your daily life.

This book is filled with the Word of God and it will allow you to search the Scriptures for yourself. It is imperative that leaders and layman alike get this book and read it personnally and then use it to glean information that can be taught in small or large groups. Well done!

If you are looking for a book that will provide you with nothing but the truth, then this is the one. There are a lot of books out there written by many people that are good, but this is one written by someone on the ground (so to speak). Min. Redd is a true man of God who holds nothing back when it comes to what thus sayeth the Lord.

I like the book because it isn't written in the typical format of spoon feeding you the material, in his book he provides you with the scriptual emphasis, giving you the referrence so you can open up the Word of God and see it for yourself.
