I decided to get this book which I saw at a store and it was a lot smaller, and easier too read than most other SAT books. When I got my score back, it was 30 points under perfect. This is the best SAT help out there, and I reccomend it 100 percent. This book is exceptional.

I, being a normal adolescent, tend to procrastinate. As the SAT was looming over me and steadily approaching in a week's time, I quickly searched for a quick and easy lifesaver and chose this book. 3 days before the big day, I scoured the contents and followed the tips. The result? A perfect score on the essay (which is odd considering I'm a terrible writer--thus I attribute my good grade to this book.)

Now this isn't the "end all be all" to SAT essay books, but you do have to realize no book can really "teach" people how to write. Good writing comes from a combination of guidelines and tips (which this book provides), reading what the graders are looking for and "good" essays (which this book provides), and most importantly, practice (which only you can provide).

When I recieved the book, I felt like the book was too small to contain so much information. But now I feel like I've accomplished a lot!
The book is very helpful in every espect and it doesn't JUST help in SATs but also in writing an essay in high school.
I love this book. I think everyone who is taking the SAT should have a go and try this book. ^^
This was my first time buying something from Amazon and I'm very proud of myself for having a go. I love the books and the books were delivered fast and on the right date, the books are in fine state... I just love it.
Thank you Amazon

Years ago I had the same book in hardcover, but apparently it got lost in the 'Bermuda Triangle', when I moved. I reordered the softcover from Amazon/The Singing Library, which was the cheapest means. The book came nicely secured in plastic wrap and a handwritten, personal 'thank you' from their customer service peops. Since I'm a fitness nut, my first tryout will be the low-calorie cheesecake, modified with fat-free products. Happy harping!

An Unsettling Truth

Review Date: 2008-06-13
I read this book a decade ago, and reread it last week. Having done a lot of research on education and literacy during the interim, I can more confidently vouch for the scholarship and accuracy of this important book.

I'll warn you frankly that dealing with some of this information for the first time is disorienting for most people. It certainly was for me. Here's why. We have to come to grips with the bizarre, totally unexpected possibility that our education establishment promoted and lied about a reading pedagogy (called Look-Say or Whole Word) which doesn't work and, in fact, caused widespread illiteracy; and further, that the country's largest, most powerful education lobbying group (the National Education Association or NEA) persistently and consciously opposed those education policies which would be best for children and the country.

Here's the grimly funny irony. Whenever the NEA encounters criticism, the NEA will invariably charge the critic with being against "public education." I am very sorry to report my own impression that the Number One obstacle to "public education" in this country is the NEA itself. NEA appears to stand for No Education Association.

Many teachers are forced to be members of this quasi-union; and their dues are extracted by force. I suspect that the majority of these teachers would like to escape. The NEA has grown big, rich, powerful, and imperious, but even its own members seem to have little respect or affection for it.

Blumenfeld records the NEA's history up to 1984, when the book was published. At that time the Cold War was still quite hot. Much of the NEA's aggression is more easily understood if you suppose that the bosses were actually fighting for the other side. The Russians, with their Brezhnev Doctrine, were quite feisty at that time; and the NEA was feisty along with them. I'm guessing there was quite an identity crisis when the USSR collapsed! In any event, I urge the NEA, bosses and teachers alike: come on home, guys. This country is still humanity's best hope; and you should be devoting your considerable resources to promoting what is truly best for our citizens and our children.

A MUST read!

Generations upon generations are at risk if change doesn't come to to the public schools. This book will show you at this present time that public schools are not meeting the grade. So what are we as parents to do? We need to take back our children's education!
We need to get back to basics...homeschooling preferred if not atleast a Christian school education. Please do buy and read this book you won't be disappointed.

As scary as the facts are in this book, I guess I'm really not too surprised by anything except how long this has been going on. This provides the answers to a lot of questions I've had about so many of the bizarre happenings in this country. If you never read another book READ THIS ONE! Our freedoms are being taken away inch by inch, so slowly that we haven't really noticed. Check the backgrounds of our judges, our legislators, lawyers etc. These people have all come from the colleges and universities spouting this propaganda!
The information in this book needs to be brought before the American people as quickly as possible. Write your legislators, contact those who have the power to reach the people of this Nation in large numbers. Hold your children's teacher's and the school district responsible for their actions and what they teach. Confront the Trojan Horse!
If you have the means to enroll your children in a private school, do so and make sure the school they're leaving knows why you're doing it.
Confront those around you who spout the socialist propaganda. They need to be brought into the light so all America can see them for what they are. Pray for this country. We're under seige!

I'm a teacher and I read this book years ago, shortly after it first came out. At that time I was working in a school system that required either joining the NEA or paying almost the exact same amount of money to it and not having a say in it. For two years, I mindlessly paid my dues and was a member. Then, I decided to read the material I had been given by the NEA. It was a 75-page, very fine print 8 1/2 x 11" book(let). I read every word of it and was amazed at some of the thing the NEA was supporting. Then I heard about this book on a radio program and when I read it, I saw that this man was pointing out the very things I had already seen.

The NEA is not a harmless group that merely wants the best for the education of our children. The changes that are happening in education are part of an overall agenda and that agenda is NOT to produce the most intelligent and well-educated children we can.

If you are an educator today, please read this book! Don't give your money mindlessly to this organization. You expect your students to research their facts and you need to do the same yourself. You owe it to yourself and the children you teach. Joining the NEA is NOT the best way to educate our youth!

This author has excellent documentation for what he says. It is well worth your time to read. Even though it was originally published in the 80's, the NEA has only gotten worse. (Did you know the NEA was sued a couple of years ago for misappropriation of funds?)

Once you read this, you'll wonder how intelligent people like teachers have been duped into thinking this is only a pro-education group. (Did you know teachers are now referred to as "agents of change"? After reading this book, you'll know why.)

This book answered many questions that I had about American public education. It discusses how the original purpose of the public school was to promote socialism; the history and philosophy of the "look-say" method of reading, which actually induces artificial dyslexia; and how the agenda of the NEA threatens our freedom. It's shocking, bold, and well-researched. Everyone in America needs to read this.

I'm really fired up! Painless Writing does help us get rid of turgid and stilted way of writing, that's for sure. This must save us a lot of waste which annoys readers. I noticed that shorter and more concise sentences come before longer and wordier ones. I haven't finished reading it yet, though. Especially, too many prepositions and passive voices get on my nerves and dilute my enthusiasm for reading. For example, what if your boy/girlfriend said,"You are loved by me."? How lame! I would be embarrassed and run away! Do you know why? - It sounds too formal to suit the situation. In short, it's an automatic turn-off! From this example, I'm sure you will put plainness before wordiness.
Overall, I bet you can say good-bye to the repetition of wordiness!

Painless Writing covers pace, rythym, and writing mechanics - and so much more. To writers who want to teach yourselves, this book should be at the top of your list because it unveils the "secrets" of making text appear seamless.

Strausser conveys information in an organized and comprehensive way: he offers websites and stand-out text boxes for easy reference.

Finally, pay attention to the "before" and "after" text examples. Stausser shows a poor example, then an improved one - to reinforce the chapter lesson. Outstanding guidePainless Writing (Painless Series).

Passage to Freedom by Ken Mochizuki is a fictional biography of the Sugihara family who saved thousands of Jewish refugees from Poland. The pictures go along very well with the story and are well done. The story is told in first person from Hiroki's, the son's, point of view. The book appears to be well researched and authentic. Thanks is given to the Sugihara family and the Holocaust Oral History Project for help in creating the book. The photograph on the back is of the true family. The language and vocabulary flow well and are appropriate for young audiences. The strong character of the family is developed through their struggle to decide to help the Jews.

Sharing a positive side of the Holocaust with young readers

Review Date: 2005-05-05
I used this book as an introduction to the Holocaust for my 7-year-old. Rather than starting him off on the atrocities, I used this well-written and beautiful book to start him off with learning that we Jews were once in grave danger, and there were some people who took care of us when they could, even though it was a difficult choice.

3/4 of the way through reading the book out loud to my son, I started to cry a little. The story is poignant, of course, but more than that, the writing captures the meaning in such a simple and straight-forward way.

I would recommend this book to anybody, Jewish or not Jewish. It is an excellent introduction to the concept that life can be dangerous, along with the idea that good people exist, AND that any one of us can choose to be a person who makes a difference.

The writing makes it clear that Sugihara was risking his and his family's lives to do the right thing. And, the writing makes it clear that being the child of someone who is willing to do the right thing can be difficult, but well worth it.

A beautiful book.

My son absolutly loves these books as well! As I read these to him, he is just captivated!

What a cute puppy!

What a cute puppy! Just look at those soft brown eyes, that little tongue, its smile. How adorable! Let's get this book for our grand. What's that you say? A hyena! No way! No animal this cute could be a hyena! Why, those critters are known for scavaging and tearing chunks of meat from an animal. A hyena! Why, I declare, at least, let's look through the book.

And another Janell Cannon illustrated children's book hits the bestseller list. Hyena or not, this is a cute puppy. But I mis-speak. From the back of the book I learn that there are four kinds of hyenas, which do resemble dogs but belong to their own Hyaenidae family. Our Pinduli belongs to the striped species which has the fartherest habitat range and eats anything from bugs to fruit to small animals. All the facts about striped hyenas, as well as the other animals, can be found disguised in the story. Clever.

The story of Pinduli takes her adrift from Mother. When the wild dogs laugh at her ears, she plip-plops them and finds her hearing diminished. The lion laughs at her bristly fur and shames her into the water to hide it. Then her weak stripes are made fun of. Finally, Pinduli rolls in dust, making her a ghastly white. When she begins her return trip home, she passes the water hole where the animals are gathered. They scream and run from "the ghost." Pinduli also runs. Once she realizes the mistaken identity, she assumes the character of the Great Spirit and demands each bad deed must be erased and the Great Spirit appeased.

There is food aplenty for Penduli and her mother from then on. The mother exclaims that Pinduli is not only beautiful but smart. As a children's librarian, I try not to emphasize the lessons of the stories but let children make their own conclusions which they do. Through experience, I have learned that this is a beautiful book for children. And there are no cute puppies in it!

I am a Sunday school teacher for young children and was looking for stories that kept the children's interest. So often the Bible story books say they're for young children, but are either over their head or very boring.
I also bought this for my 3 yr old niece and it's one of her favorite books.
A quality product I don't think you will be disappointed with.
Oh, and I almost forgot to mention, at the end of the stories are suggested songs and activities that are very do-able.

Ever want to press the "easy" button in your homeschool? Look no further. The Star-Spangled State Book is a colorful, child-friendly, easy-to-read book about the 50 states. My 1st, 3rd, and 6th graders all love it. You get great facts and no fru-fru with this book. (We use it with the workbook - much better with both.)

The book contains a page dedicated to each state. You will see a small picture of the state, the capital, the abbreviation, the flag, the 3 largest cities, date entered statehood, rank, population, and area. There is a Fact Box and 2 short stories about each state, usually about a famous person who has contributed to our country in some way.

In addition, you will find a page on the following: American Presidents, The Civil War, The 13 Colonies, a blank American map, a labeled American map, Statehood Order, State Abbreviations, and more.

The GeoQuiz at the bottom of each page reviews states, capitals, borders, and trivia. This is a great refresher for mom, too!

I compared this book to others on the market, and liked this one best. My kids have improved their knowledge of states, state recognition, and capitals with it.

Montessori Preschool At Home

I really like this book. It's very easy to implement. The book is divided into sections: Life Skills, Developing the Senses, Language Development, Numeracy Skills (math), and Science Skills. Each section is filled with easy to implement activities for your 2-5 year old. (My best guess at age appropriateness.)

All of the materials are easy to find at home. She includes a few worksheets in the back (really Parent worksheets) of things to cut out such as number rods, a flower parts puzzle, words for language games, etc.)

I think this book would be great for those who wanted to homeschool their kids for preschool or for those who wished perhaps that their kids could attend Montessori. Using this book plus perhaps "Peak with Books" or just reading some great picture books each day would be more than enough.

Great value. Highly recommended.

This is a wonderfully useful book - teach your child the simple day-to-day skills - things you take for granted that they actually have to learn! Skills include doing up buttons, pouring, sorting, putting on a coat, doing up shoe laces, etc. It is super easy to follow, and has further steps once your child has mastered the basic skill. Chapters include Life Skills, Developng the Senses, Language Development, Numeracy Skills, Science Skills. A great opportunity to quietly teach your child to become confident with every day skills.

I would give this book 6 stars if I could. The format is laid out so that it's easy to flip to and find a specific activity. I love the "you will need" and "other activities to try" tip boxes on the side, too. I would agree that if you only had one book on Montessori activities, this would be the one to buy.

Teach 'em without the Structure

I am very fond of this book. It is a great guide offering almost "duh!" like activities (things that you would never even think of going out of your way to teach your kids) to do with your toddler in order to help them gain a sense of independence and accomplishment. That said, almost all the activities can be done without going out and buying a whole bunch of materials. I particularly like this book as a mom interested in the Montessori method, but not being able to afford to put my children in the pricey Montessori schools in my area. The book is easy and pleasant to read; it's in colour and has plenty of photos. Also, if there is an activity your child really likes, it has suggestions for other activities similar in nature. I like that the book shows you many of the activities they do, but leaves it up to you how you would like to present them to your kids. The book does not specifically tell you what age range the child has to be in order to present an activity, but it does state in the beginning that it presents the activities in order of being the easier concepts to grasp to the more difficult (specifically chapters 1,2, & 5). The author tells you to use your judgement on what you think your child can handle (for instance if they seem to like counting and maths, they will more likely progress faster with the maths activities. I personally would've liked a generic age range per activity, but I understand the point the author is trying to make. I just like that the author gives us the activities the Montessori schools do, but doesn't require the reader to completely apply the Montessori method. I plan on using this as a reference since I would like to educate my children myself until they reach kindergarten.

Excellent for Montessori at home!

This is a wonderful book for parents wanting to do basic Montessori activities at home, and it also suggests inexpensive ways to make activities as well. I gave this book one less star because it doesn't tell you what activities are age appropriate. I know all children develop and excel in different ways and times, but a little more guidance would have been helpful.

Good Buddhist stories for bedtime

I wish I liked this book more. The illustrations are great and contemporary. The stories contain values and are based on the Jakata tales of the Buddha. However, the stories themselves are a bit short, reminiscent of Aesop's fables. My personal feelings are that more character development and detail are needed to expand on the stories. HOWEVER, this is a GREAT resource for Buddhist parents to read to their kids at bedtime. I really wish and encourage there to be more books along these lines. We need to teach our children how to be better human beings. This is more important than anything else. This book helps move in that direction.

My 3 year old daughter loves the stories in this book. I was so excited it taught her the Mantra Om Mani Padme Hum! It is a great book that incorporates both Buddhist messages and Tibetan Culture. The illustrations are beautiful too!

My daughter and I attend a Family Dharma class that teaches from a primary text for adults, but the class is geared towards little kids as far as time and content. However I really felt we needed some literature that was on her level (she is 6) and had images. Tibetan Tales was perfect. There are several stories that can be read individually and discussed. Some we had already heard and it was nice to go over them again with illustrations this time. This is an excellent book to begin teaching your child about Buddhism and can be read over and over with new meanings as your child gets older.
