What a great story! Enjoyed reading about Catherine Grace and all her family. Gloria Jean is a fun character and someone a reader can take to heart because she isn't perfect. I sat next to the author, Susan Gregg Gilmore at a bookfair in Lexington, KY and it was fun watching how the title of her book drew people to her table. The story inside the book lived up to the draw of the title. It's fun and touching as Catherine Grace comes to term with the realities of her life and discovers that sometimes fulfilling your dreams can take you in directions you never planned on. You won't be sorry you tried this book by a new to the fiction scene, but very good writer.

I greatly enjoyed this quick read. The characters are believable and sweetly naive. It is a powerful book about women and their roles in society, especially the bonds of motherhood and where in the world we find mothers besides home. I highly recommend this book!

I really enjoyed the very real & complex characters in "Looking for Salvation at the Dairy Queen", especially the female characters. I related to Catherine Grace's mission to leave her small, hometown although she didn't necessarily have a grand plan of what to go to...

The central themes of finding your place in the world, family secrets and the odd effects of death on family dynamics made for interesting book club conversation. Everyone enjoyed these characters and the southern setting was not "over-done", just a great back drop for this coming of age story.

I recommend this book as a warm, fun story with some deeper moments interspersed. Loved the characters & can't wait for Susan Gregg Gilmore's next book!

A captivating story...

Growing up in a small town, I completely relate to Catherine Grace Cline's desire to leave Ringgold to see where life takes her.

This book caught my attention early on and kept me enthralled all the way to the end. I thoroughly enjoyed becoming part of Catherine Grace's story and look forward to seeing more novels by Susan Gregg Gilmore!

When-I-was-a-little-girl is a whimsical children's picturebook about how memories can sometimes change with perspective. Young Lisabeth tries to be a good girl, but it seems she is always "to messy" or "too picky" compared to the translucent, ghostlike figure of When-I-was-a-little-girl that Lisabeth's mother regularly invokes. Lisabeth is in a pickle - until Grandma comes to visit! Grandma remembers When-I-was-a-little-girl in a very different way; indeed, When-I-was-a-little-girl and Lisabeth are quite alike after all! A heartwarming and gentle story that ultimately reassures the strength of family bonds.

A Mother and Daughter story you'll relate to!

My almost 5 year old daughter picked this one out of the library - and what a great find! Here is a synopsis of the story;

"Lisabeth's mother constantly tells her about the perfect child she used to be. But one awful day, when there is liver and onions and no dessert for dinner, Wheniwasalittlegirl actually appears. She's "all neat and tidy, with that I'm-so-perfect smile on her face." Not only that, but she loves liver and onions.... How will Lisabeth manage to get rid of this obnoxious visitor?"

My girls now want to know if "wheniwasalittlegirl" can come to our house - they have been cleaning their bedroom & toyroom in preparation for her visit!!!

If you've already seen the Gilmore Girls TV show, then you'll like this book! It has a lot of the dialogue from the show.

It covers episodes:

-The Pilot
-The Lorelais' First day at Chilton
-Kiss and Tell
-Rory's Dance
-Forgiveness and Stuff

If you haven't seen the TV show, you should read this book, (or the whole Gilmore Girls book series!) and then watch the show. I think it would be very interesting to see all the charactors after reading the book(s).

Sixteen-year-old Lorelai "Rory" Gilmore can't tell you what a normal mother-daughter relationship is like. After all, she and her mother have never experienced one. Instead of sharing a mother-daughter bond, they have something much stronger: a best friend. And that's okay with the both of them. After all, growing up in the small town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut, Rory and Lorelai (yes, she was named after her mother), have depended on one another - along with a slew of quirky neighbors - to get by. They haven't had the stability of a male bread-winner in the family; and the rift between Lorelai and her semi-estranged parents has only grown larger over the years, given to the fact that not only did she become pregnant at age 16, but she also took her child and ran as far as she possibly could from them. Now, however, things have changed. Rory is determined to receive admittance into Hartford's biggest private school, Chilton. She has spent years dreaming of the day she can attend Harvard University, and Rory feels that making it into Chilton is one small step in the right direction. But, even after being accepted, things aren't right. Lorelai doesn't have the tuition money to fund Rory's education, so she has to beg and plead with her parents to foot the bill - at least until she can scrape together enough cash to pay them back. Now, in exchange for accepting the money, Rory and Lorelai are forced to spend every Friday night (at least until one of them kicks the bucket) at the Grandparents house, for weekly dinners that give the workaholic Grandfather, Richard, and the stubborn Grandmother, Emily, weekly updates on how their "two girls" are doing. Of course, given the relationship between Lorelai and her parents, these weekly dinners are filled with bickering, accusations, and miserable moments that are sure to leave someone in tears. Luckily, Rory and Lorelai have each other to depend on to make it through these gruesome times, and come out on top.

As a fan of the "Gilmore Girls" TV show, I found myself unable to resist picking up the book series, when I spotted it at Barnes & Noble. Unlike many other TV show novelizations, GILMORE GIRLS manages to squeeze in the dialogue and situations that took place during five episodes of the show (The Pilot, The Lorelais' First Day At Chilton, Kiss and Tell, Rory's Dance, and Forgiveness and Stuff). The dialogue is almost identical to the screenplay, but that's what gives it heart, for it is the quirky one-liners, and zany observations that give the show that cozy feeling. Rory and Lorelai, along with their sidekicks - from Dean to Lane, to Luke and the Grandparents - are all projected on paper as well as they are on the small screen. When reading, you can actually hear the characters voices, and picture the scenes in your head. For people who have not viewed the show, this is the perfect series, for it recaps exactly what has happened since day one; and for those who call themselves die-hard fans, this is a must for you, as well, as it features all the snappy commentary, and cozy, small-town comforts, along with an inside look at how Rory views everyone around her - from her friends to her family, and even to her neighbors - something which hasn't been featured on the show. All in all a delightful "Gilmore Girls" introduction novel, that features all the charm of the show, in the form of a book.

This book is tightly based on the first few episodes of Gilmore Girls. There are no additions or changes to the show so if you're looking for extras you won't find them. The first few episodes are a little bland to me because I have seen them so many times so the book was a little boring. But if you haven't seen them then you will like it. One of the main flaws (for me) is that I don't like Rory and Dean together because I'm more of a Jess and Rory person. But this whole book is good if you missed an episode off Gilmore Girls or if you want to watch (read) the episode again.

It was very informative and I had a great time reading it, I think I'm going to purchase the second seasons companion book as well!

I knew there was something special about this wonderful show when it premiered on the WB in the fall of 2005. There was another little show I knew that was something special that premiered mid season on the same network in 1997. Like that classic, Supernatural has evolved in a cult favorite, filled with deep mythology, story arcs, and emotionally charged drama among two brothers. SN is the kind of show that definitley allows itself to have books like this, and the other book released around the same time about all the demons/monsters etc. that are featured on the show. It's just too rich not too.

Author Nicholas Knight has crafted a nice little read. The book, as the title simply puts it, is a companion piece to season 1 of the brilliant, critically acclaimed little show that could. All 22 episodes from that superb debut season are here. Each episode has a synopsis that is followed by cast and crew members commenting on the episodes, and talking about whatever comes to mind, or if there was something special or unique, about that particular episode. There are some little facts that pop up, as well as a list of what classic rock songs were featured in the episode. As we all know, the classic rock soundtrack is as much a part of the show as the car.

The book is well done and a fun read, but slight when compared to other guide books to other television shows. One wonders why seasons 1 and 2 are being done seperate when they very well could have been put together for one large book. The "Buffy" books that dealt with the same thing are the blueprint for these kinds of books, and if there is one complaint here, is that it's not long enough. You could probably read the whole thing in one sitting if you wanted too. Elsewhere, the book has interviews with the cast, crew members, and a section where they talk about the impact of the show and the critical praise it has received. All well worth it. Horror legend Clive Barker hasn't called Supernatural "First rate horror storytelling" for nothing. There are also some nice colored photos as well.

In the end, The official companion book to season one of Supernatural is a must buy for fans of the show. It's also a nice place to start for beginners who want to know what the show is about and play catch up. Get the excellent DVD's as well. The book is what is set out to be, and it is well written and informed. The book on the monsters/demons and so on is an interesting book too, but this is the best of the two.

I loved reading the essays, which analyzed everything from Emily (wow, most psychiatrists wouldn't take on that job) to the massive amounts of food consumed on the show. While I disagreed with the point made by a few of the essays, I think that the book points out the many subtleties that make Gilmore Girls a fan classic.
Did you ever notice the significance of Lorelai becoming a maid after leaving home? Emily fires maids every day, doesn't consider them human, and in season 6 calls them criminals who get their children to rob you. She said that to Rory, the child of a former maid. Little gems like that make this book a must-read. Plus, it gives you an excuse to break out the much-watched DVDs again.

Amy Sherman Palladino (the author of the novel Gilmore Girls The other side of summer) wraps you up in a novel about a mother daughter bond that is absolutely irresistible, funny and loving. Roarie, (the daughter) is starting the year at a new school called Chilton. Chilton is a private school that is considered strict and apparently looks great in your college application. Throughout the book you hear about the obstacles that Roarie faces at her at her new school. While Roarie studies and her mom learns how to become a "Chilton mom" they stick together and get through it.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a funny, loving story. I liked the way Roarie and Lorelei (her mother) interacted with each other and the fact that they were best friends. If you are expecting suspense and cliff hangers this is not the book for you. This is definitely not my favorite book but it is what I call "easy fun reading".

I usually like to read books that are exciting and unexpected; things that you NEVER know would happen.

I pretty much blew all those things away by reading the Gilmore Girls series. I've seen all the shows (no kidding- my friends and I should form a club... or perhaps a cult) and NOTHING is a surprise any more. Max Medina? Old news.

But... there is a shortage of Gilmore Girls reruns where I live. And reading the book is almost exactly like seeing the show... you can practically hear Rory and Lorelai talking as you read the dialogue...

If you're a Gilmore fan, get the book. Makes you understand just a bit more... but if you haven't seen the show, I wouldn't recommend it. See the show, THEN read the book.

But even I'M not sure if the Cheshire Cat's horror can properly be conveyed through a book. Seeing is believing. :)

In this Gilmore Girls book, Lorelai and Max are ready to marry. But then Lorelai starts to get cold feet. Her and Rory get in the car and drive to who knows where, until they end up at a B&B. They have to stop even though they both hate B&B's. While there, Lorelai and Rory make a surprise trip to Harvard University, the Ivy League College that Rory hope to attend. What will happen in teh next chapter of the Gilmore Girls' lives? Read "I Do, Don't I", to find out.

I love the gilmore girls, and due to the rave reviews (unfortunately the last person to also negatively review the book hadnt done it when i purchased it) thought i would love it. i am only thankful i didnt buy all 4 books at once, or even more than just this one... it is identical to the episodes, with the exception that it is only from rory's point of view, so you miss out on all of the stuff that happened that the episodes show, but rory doesnt see (her mom and chris kissing on the balcony, the baby chick being lost in her house when she isnt there, etc).. it was not worth the $2 i paid for the book, or the time i spent reading the book... very disappointed... i was hoping for some extra details, things like how rory got into the donna reed costume or how she and dean's breakup actually went down... but no luck!

I was an English Major in college. I'm a huge advocate of literacy in general, and anything that gets people (especially kids/teens) to read. But this mockery of a book is entirely, well... stupid. It is word for word and action for action the dialog and movements from the show.

There is no hidden depths here. It's written first person point of view of Rory, and frankly, Rory wouldn't write this boringly.

Television (and movies) as a springboard for novels is a great idea. Unfortunately, at the moment I can only think of sci-fi examples such as Star Wars, Star Trek, Firefly, and Dark Angel. But I'm sure there are others. These novel series are in addition to the show. They are not direct episodes transcribed from the show. They offer deeper character analysis and unexplored avenues of adventure.

If you're that interested in the subject, try getting your hands on a shooting script for Gilmore Girls episodes. At least they're a more interactive read.
