Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2BQ4EWXI8X74C This book transcends genre -- it's a good collection of memoirs, entertaining style, nice splash of humor, an extremely detailed travelogue with beautiful photographs, a good description of technology, a touch of Science Fiction (since it is purportedly written by a Artificial Imagination program) and suffused with philosophical musing and last but not the least, a moving love story.

Even though it's obviously written by a Technologist, the book is very human. It is primarily about the immigrant experience, but Kalpanik is extremely observant and has an eye to look for the unusual, notice what stands out and build humorous side of people, places and his own life.

Wonderful! I am specially moved by his bitter-sweet love story at the end.

This book combines elements from good humor, a memoir, a scenic travelogue, a touching love story, science fiction and philosophy.

Whether you ever wondered about meaning of it all, or you want to read something light amusing, or want to see places like Seattle, San Diego, Nashville from the eyes of the writer, or vicariously live the life of a
student at University of California, this book is for you!

The author, purportedly an Artificial Imagination computer program simualting a life/career journey through the Hi Tech and yet very sdcenic world of California and Washington (Settle) is witty still though down to earth and funny! The book is written in a very conversational style, as if you are reading a letter from a close friend!!

Great book, love it! It's hilarious! I could not stop giggling, I cracked up page after page. Really Nice!

And so many nice photographs. I was traveling with the author, feeling his ambitions, his surprise, excitement and pain. And what a brave soul! He (yes, despite its claims to have been written by an AI program, this book is written by a loving, feeling, breathing human for sure!)--He is able to maintain his sense of humor even as he moves from one place to another, faces one set back after another! He always comes back!

Wow! What a story!!

Oh, And the love story in the end is touching.

Controversy?

Review Date: 2006-09-06
Shaw has packed many high-level topics into this play, while at the same time keeping long portions of the dialogue fairly low-level. Two topics jump out most frequently: hell and enjoyment. His take on each respective topic is fresh, seemingly from an entirely new perspective.

In the third act, the characters' conversation stands out in a couple ways. The explanation of hell from Don Juan, the Statue, and The Devil's point of view is unique. From a Judeo-Christian standpoint, it reeks of blasphemy, twisting around the traditional views to show things as they really are: The devil finally gets to tell his side of the story; heaven is boring; anyone can go between the two afterlives whenever they please. What is interesting is that Shaw's hell can fit with the Judeo-Christian/Biblical facts, something that the blasphemy police certainly will not give any credence to or spend any time investigating. His idea that heaven and hell are created for those who are going there matches perfectly with Biblical theology. A person not living in the grace of Jesus would hate heaven just as much as a person living in his grace would hate hell. Biblical theologians would not agree (if one could get them to listen) that people can choose their own eternity, nor would they agree with the concept of non-believers enjoying themselves in hell, even if one could get them to voice their belief that they will be given over to all the desires of their flesh.

What is fascinating about Shaw's hell is just that idea - that if life is about your passions and enjoyment (namely, the flesh) then your afterlife will be personal to those same passions and enjoyment. At this point, the conservative Judeo-Christians would be sharpening their inquisition equipment in a fervent rage because much of the play speaks to that idea of personal enjoyment during life, specifically the English. Don Juan says that humans live to try to understand life more but later adds to that idea by saying that understanding only helps us to know that we are enjoying ourselves. Life then becomes the pursuit of enjoyment, and hell mimics that pursuit as a sort of eternal amusement park. In a statement that seems like a pre-response to his opponent's case, Don Juan then says that although he spent his whole life looking for pleasure, he never found it. If it could ever happen, it is that response which could appease the frantic theologians. The devil, being the father of lies has pulled the eternal wool over everyone's eyes, both the living and the dead, and has gotten them to abandon their real purpose.

Shaw's flirtation with both sides of the controversy is what allows this play such success. He angers both the proponents and opponents of Christian "myths" and then offers possible solutions to appease both sides.

In this title, G.B. Shaw outdoes himself. Not only does he manage to turn up with a Don Juan play in our modern day and age, which is full of cynicism, and doesn't give in to 'medieval' codes of behaviour, but he even manages to turn around the table. Here, the hunter becomes the hunted, forced to flee from his pursued/pursuer. Shaw includes in this play an ingenious conversation between the original 15th century characters, which not only explains about Don Juan's philosophy, but shines a new light upon our own lives, here and today.

Pure Bergsonism

Review Date: 2001-02-12
George Bernard Shaw was called, with good reason, the "English Nietzsche". Though Nietzsche was an aristocrat and Shaw a socialist, both cherished the dream of the superman and looked forward to the day when he would be realised. Both, however, were characterised by their mordant wit and intellectual cynicism, in which "Man and Superman" abounds. Shaw manages to compress a number of disparate themes into a relatively taut dramatic format, even throwing in a scene in which Don Juan, the Devil and a gang of anarchist brigands make an appearance. The central event of the plot involves the wealthy Tanner, a member of the "Idle Rich Class" making himself subservient to the Life Force and seeking the perfect woman to marry, who would guarantee him a very special offspring, his ideal, the superman himself. Though Shaw was not known to have read the works of Bergson at that time, nor to have been conversant with his vitalist doctrine of the Life Force, his use of the Life Force motif and the philosophical underpinnings of the play attest to a pure Bergsonism. The most delightful part, however, is the "Revolutionist's Handbook" at the end, which contains Shaw's most scandalous anti-Establishment jibes. For instance, "Do not do unto others as you would them do unto you. They might not have the same taste."

A below "review" on this site (if it hasn't already been removed) accuses me of "stealing" comedians' material via a "legal loophole."

Which is a not only a misreading of US Copyright Law, but misrepresents the content of my book, my methods for compiling it, and my intent.

Up to 100 comedians directly contributed jokes to me for this book; and the material gathered under the Fair Use provision of US Copyright law is not only correctly contributed to each comedian, but in addition I have, whenever possible, provided contact information for comedians, so that readers who like the glimpse of a comedian's act provided, can then contact the comedian and buy the CD, DVD of his/her act or find out where to see that comedian live or on TV.

The Fair Use provision of the US Copyright laws is no mere "legal loophole" -- it has not only provided the basis for the compiling of every other quote book in existence in the USA for at least 100 years, but is the underpinning of every news report you read (or hear), and every history book written in the United States. Fair Use has not only been upheld by the Supreme Court, it has been championed by every free speech advocate imaginable, including the ACLU.

If my intent had been to "steal" I could have printed the quotes without attribution (which happens all too often on the internet, usually by those unfamiliar with US Copyright law or fair use, in any sense.) And I certainly wouldn't have gone to the trouble to provide comedian credits, bios and contact information (including email or website addresses, whenever possible.)

But as a reporter on the comedy scene for over 20 years -- including as the comedy critic for the LA Weekly for over a dozens years, and also freelance for the Los Angeles Times, Mademoiselle magazine and other newspapers and magazines -- that would be unlikely to be my intent.

This is basically a smart-ass version of Bartlett's Quotations -- and what a terrific deal. 3000+ quotes for $16.95. And they're not the same quotes that you see in all the other quote collections -- no Mark Twain, no Oscar Wilde, no Dorothy Parker. These quotes are all refreshingly contemporary -- culled by the author from a ton of standup performances. If you're looking for funny/fresh observations to use in a speech or article, this is the perfect reference. (And kudos to the book's illustrator -- the oddball chapter openers are delightful!)

When i started reading it, it was much better than i expected. not everything in this book is funny, but the majority is. it's not a dumb joke book, it's witty & clever & right into the point. it's worth my money. everyone who has a sense of humor would definitely love this book.

I'm glad I let Judy use my material, because despite my film and tv credits, it was Judy's use of my jokes that convinced my family that maybe this comedy thing of Basil's might pan out into something real. Thanks Judy. Her books are also great for speechwriters who need a joke about a specific topic. Her books are organized like Bartlett's Quotations, but with jokes that are actually funny.

I am one of the contributors to the book and I can say that I sent Ms. Brown 15 jokes, at no charge and with my permission, to include in her book The Comedy Thesaurus. I have also contributed jokes to her book, Squeaky Clean Comedy. I must say that my dealings with Judy have been a pleasure.

This is a thoroughly entertaining, intelligent and often hysterical book, written with a sense of irony and with great insight. The author ably weaves a story about the internet phenomenon and the absurd activities of twenty-something "paper millionaires" within the larger context of one person's normal struggles and experience of life. The book is full of wry observation and informative commentary. You will not be disappointed.

Loved Dinkelmann's Rules, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to re-live what it was like to work in the internet during this crazy period; or for anyone looking for a window into what it was truly like. As someone who was right in the middle of the "dotcom revolution", I found the book to be extremely humorous and thought provoking at the same time. Mr. Lamport manages to capture the vibe and personalities of the time perfectly and is able to craft it into an entertaining and ultimately very satisfying read. Long live Dinkelmann!

A comic and satirical success, this book has flavors of Jonathan Swift, Dickens and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Caricatures grow into characters as they are seen from different angles, while remaining hilarious. A picture of the 1990's bubble stock market is built in these pages almost like watching an impressionist painting take shape as it is created. If you like to laugh, don't miss this ironic gem.

I'm so late to this party - I feel like a complete douche. I enjoyed this so much I couldn't really form rational words to describe, especially since all of the other reviews, at least combined, did such a thorough and accurate job. (except what's up with someone giving it only 4 stars?)

This system needs more stars.

Several people already beat me to this and nailed it. Still, I wanted to write something. So I'll start by confirming what they say is so true.

I wish I would have discovered this sooner and can't wait for more. There was something about The Fart Party, I don't know what... But I read it so fast it was like I absorbed it. I couldn't pull away, meanwhile I have ~3 other books I like a lot but haven't been able to finish in several months.

If anyone is looking for some good clean dirty entertainment this is now my official first suggestion.

Hell, I even paid for my copy (yes, me, the dude who gave Julia permission to reprint the interview). But that's because I'd seen it all before online and it made me laugh, and I like to throw money at people who make me laugh (intentionally) from time to time.

Julia Wertz could be called "a fresh new voice on the UG/Indie comic scene" or "a wicked talent to be reckoned with" or "the prom queen of the indie comic sock hop" or a dozen other clever things but none would aptly describe what's going on here.

Yeah, she is a fresh new voice, but her voice has been heard by many already tuned into her via the internet where her comics have a loyal and dedicated following. She's sometimes spiteful, sometimes sweet (often tender, frankly) sometimes self-focused and sometimes offensive but she is always honest and curiously insightful. And funny. Very funny.

Her talent is certainly to be reckoned with because it is obvious with this initial release, she's got much more to say and room to grow in artistic and "literary" terms. And I don't mean this as a criticism.

Indeed, some comic artist/writers might be content with the level and quality of what is presented here, but Wertz is definitely barely hitting her stride. I'd dare others to keep up, because I'd bet a paycheck that she will go further and reach higher than most in her field.

Wertz provides a lot of good stuff here. In addition to dozens of dozens comics (it's not a slim tome, it has considerable heft) we're given the chance to see her style evolve a bit into one that is definitely and recognizable as her own. It's as if we are allowed to see a burgeoning comic artist develop a particular confidence of voice and line that cannot be ignored.

Do yourself a favor and pick up this excellent introduction to "The Fart Party." Keep an eye out for Wertz in the coming years as she continues to present us with her own peculiar view of love, work, play and life. I really can't wait to see what she produces in the years to come, because if this book is any indication, it will be even more amazing.

Buy this book, folks. Now. You'll be glad you weren't late to the party.

Maybe you've been reading [...] for a few years. Maybe you have all of Wertz's minicomics. Maybe you have never even heard of a fartparty. It doesn't really matter, because this book is a must have for all three categories of reader. This is no slim and fast read, but a great chunk of a book that will keep you laughing and sighing until the end. Oh, and Wertz even explains how the name came about in case you were wondering.

This anthology of Wertz's comics start at the very beginning of her foray into the comics medium, but even at the start and without much experience, she proved to have a natural talent for making pictures and words in boxes that pack a punch. Maybe it was her background as a writer or just an inborn wit, but she hit the ground running and has been making great work since the start, and this book covers the first year and a half or so of that process.

Wertz draws in a style that is completely her own and never seems to have fallen into the trap of imitation which many young cartoonists do. Though simple, the strong black and whites express her point of view on the world better than any realist style ever could. Its exciting to see Wertz develop as an artist over the course of the book, but she never loses that edge she has had from the start.

I could go on about the fartparty, talk about the story line that runs throughout the book, or the different characters that we get to know through Wertz's eyes, but that would take away the fun of discovering it for yourself. This book is definitely worth the pricetag, especially since it is a book you can re-read many times without the jokes getting stale. It has a prime spot on my bookshelf and I recommend that you add it to your collection as well.

I thoroughly enjoyed this excellent first novel by Gary Isaacson. He is a talented writer who has a great sense of timing and drama. The two main characters are likeable and believable; the plot takes off with enough intrigue to keep you turning the pages. The book also provided an interesting window into the craft of producing a TV news spot with just enough technical expertise to make it convincing. I think this novel had many of the characteristics of one of Grisham's novels, but the elements of humor and humanity made it even better! I highly recommend the novel and look forward to the sequel!

Blending a well-told story with great commentary on both the business of gambling machines and the rapidly evolving world of digital broadcasting, Game Over moves at a pace that is neither too fast nor too slow. A great read for fans of both high technology and crime novels. I highly recommend it!

At Mom's suggestion, I gave this book a look. The combination of technical detail about 2 fascinating industries (casino gambling and TV production) with a fast paced murder/mystery plot reminded me of Tom Clancy's style. Also reminding me of a Tom Clancy book, once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down until I was finished (to my wife's mild annoyance). I bought into the characters and was desperate to know how all turned out. I eagerly await the sequel promised in the "About the Author" section.

This thrilling story weaves through the confluence of the new Las Vegas, the shady gaming industry and the burgeoning world of digital television broadcasting. The writing is sharp and funny, and the plot unfolds with the perfect balance of suspense and pace.

What really makes Game Over a great read is its unwitting -- which is certainly not to say unwitty -- hero, Alec Timken. Hilarious, kind, wise and decidedly self-aware, Alec is a fascinating and endearing narrator. Hopefully the game has just begun for this author and this series!

If Laughter is the Salt of Life, then pass the salt! This is a great book. I've enjoyed it on my daily commute and had several fellow train passengers ask why I'm laughing. Nothing can be funnier than real life and these stories are exceptionally well written. The first person viewpoint makes it seem as though you're hearing them from an old friend. With me, they've also been known to cause "collateral" laughing as certain stories reminded me of some of the funny events in my life.

As you read through this collection of funny stories a few will sound so familiar you'll think it was written about you or someone you know very well. Others are so hysterical you'll wish you were there to see them. This book is an easy read that will make you smile, if not laugh out loud. It's sort of a Candid Camera in print, where the reader can easily imagine the real situations that people got themselves into. Laughter is indeed the salt of life!

What a cool little book!

This book has a seriously cool concept and is a great light read for study hall or a morning commute. None of the stories are more than 2 or 3 paragraphs long which make it really easy to digest! The book also has a pretty cool website associated with it (www.hardestlaugh.com). A very fun little book!

Ken Akamatsu, Love Hina, vol. 7 (Tokyopop, 1999)

I've been thinking on and off about complaining about the incredible stupidity one finds here (and in most relationship comedies), that of the characters just being too stupid to actually talk to one another, but somewhere in the middle of this volume, I came to realize that, really, most of us were that stupid in high school. Of course, most of us probably didn't have to deal with Keitaro's complicated life. New complications arise: is Mutsumi really the girl he made the promise to? Fun series. ****

This excellent series continues in it's seventh volume. It's still as funny as ever. The love triangle deepens in this issue. Which girl is Keitaro's true love? If that's not enough to worry about, the Tokyo U entrance exam comes up again. I you enjoyed previous volumes of this series, you will enjoy this one, too.

Contrary to what Keitaro originally thought, Naru may not be the girl he made the promise to at all! In fact it is more likely that he made the promise to Mutsumi! But he already has feelings for Naru but he might have made the promise to Mutsumi. Should he break the promise to Mutsumi or break naru's heart? Is there another way out? Keitaro's brilliant idea is to go on a date with both of them at the same time but things don't exactly go his way when Naru gives him a deadline of only a few hours to decide. Which way will he turn? Find out in this exciting volume of Love Hina!

Ken Akamatsu, Love Hina, vol. 9 (Tokyopop, 1999)

Everyone's gotten into Tokyo U, but Keitaro still can't think of anything but Naru. After an accident, he winds up in the hospital, and when she comes to see him, Keitaro blurts out that he loves her. He certainly doesn't get the reaction he expects. Meanwhile, Motoko's sister comes to take her back to run the family business. But there's a loophole-- she doesn't have to do so if she's engaged. Keitaro to the rescue, and more misadventures and wrong conclusions are sure to appear. Great stuff, as always. ****

Let's go to Tokyo U!

This is another hilarious volume in this great manga series. Our hero, Keitaro, has finally gotten into Tokyo University. But don't think his problems are over. I won't tell you what happens, but it's very funny. If you liked the previous volumes in the series, you will like this one.

This is a wonderful manga series. I diacovered Love Hina a few months ago and I have all the books and the anime series, but the manga series is a little better because you get some closure at the end in book 14 plus there are some tales that were not put into anime that are hilarious.

Some of the highlights of book 9:

Keitaro's first day at Tokyo University (sort of)

Motoko's battle with her sister (shown in anime episode 25, but a little different in the manga)

Shinobu goes on a date with Keitaro!

Haruka and Seta's past is revealed - and who is Sara's mother?

Great!

Finally! After all that work it has finally paid off! Naru, Mutsumi, and Keitaro make it into Tokyo U! But he can't make it to the ceremony because of a freak accident that puts him in the hospital. But while in the hospital he tells Naru how she really feels but her reaction wasn't even what Keitaro expected. Now he's going to have to miss half a years worth of classes. What is he going to do now? Not to mention the fact that Motoko's psycho sister comes to town and Keitaro is going to have to marry Motoko! What is he going to do now! Very exciting! You must read this volume!

A great series that gets better with each new release

I'm not sure what drew me into Love Hina in the first place, but each successive graphic novel seems to get better.

My initial thoughts on Love Hina was that it was just another one guy/thousands of girls manga with too contrived a premise to really enjoy. And after the first few, it still felt that way. But soon enough, the writing and characters won me over and steered away from some of the cliches that normally bombard this type of manga.

Love Hina rises above most romantic comedy style manga by keeping a good balance of romance and comedy to keep it from being too saccharine or too goofy. Another aspect that's refreshing is that not every single girl that Keitaro, the main protagonist, comes across falls for him. All the girls in the comic have very distinct personalities that play off each other so well, and yes I'll admit it, all of them are pretty cute in their own ways.

Getting back to volume 9 though. Volume 8, to me, seemed like it would be a good ending to the series, where it seems all the loose ends get tied up. After all, the series is mostly about Keitaro trying to get into Tokyo University and he finally does at the end of volume 8. I didn't think there would be anything much further to take the Hinata clan, but there are some nice revelations and stories in volume 9 to suggest Love Hina has a long way to go before the premise gets exhausted.

It starts out with Keitaro having an unfortunate accident at Tokyo U (a pretty over-the-top accident, even for Love Hina) forcing him to take a leave of absence. Other stories include Motoko's sister visiting Hinata House, Shinobu having her first real date with Keitaro-sempai and Seta proposing to Haruka. Oh yeah, we finally get to see where Keitaro and Naru's relationship is going too.

What sets it apart from previous volumes is that it looks like several of the girls are starting to fall for Keitaro. Motoko, Shinobu and even Kitsune start to display more affection for him. Because this is happening in volume 9 and not right at the beginning of the series makes it much more believable and based in reality. Series like Tenchi Muyo and Ranma 1/2 get bogged down with so many love triangles that have no basis for existing that it just gets tiring.

The comedy, writing and drawing in the series is as good as ever. Although there are still several obvious grammatical errors that make it feel like it was rushed. (Shinobu says "I'm going right to be here to cheer you on!!" when it should be ...going to be right here...) The editing needs some work, but other than that, Love Hina volume 9 doesn't disappoint.

When I got this book for Christmas I looked at the cover and thought, this is cool. For a couple of weeks I had it propped up on my dresser. Yesterday, I had a doctors appointment and stuck it in my pocket. As I sat in the waiting room I started reading, and SURPRISE! the next thing that happened was the nurse was shaking my shoulder. I have never been so engrossed in a book before. The information is exactly what I needed. I see all these commercials on the TV for these psychics. Well, this book is all you need.

This book is a very clear and direct explanation of how to manifest what you want in your life. As Marelin explains, life is not what it appears to be, but what we think, feel and expect. To change what we get, we must first change what we see on the inside. As she puts it, "You have to BE it to see it, and you must see it to be it." There are many books around that tell us that we create our own reality; some are very helpful, but few are written in as concise and direct a way as Merlin's Message. This book works on both sides of the brain --the left, by describing precisely how the universe works; the right, by the inspirational tone, much of it in verse. I would highly recommend this book to anyone familiar (maybe even burnt out) with metaphysical and new age philosophy as well as anyone new to the idea that reality is a mirror of our thoughts and feelings.

This lovely book is highly empowering! It is a priceless reminder of who we truly are, from the vantage point of seeing ourselves as being wizards who playfully create our lives interactively. As Marelin the Magician writes, "Nothing happens to you; everything happens through you". This book is truly a pocketbook; it fits in my pocket so I can carry it along and read it when I'm traveling. I find it highly uplifting every time I need an extra boost of good cheer, since every page is full of positive affirmations and optimistic statements. I love the way this book reminds us to live our dreams -- I highly recommend it!

Truly the Best Book I have ever read--by far!

This little book is enormous in its scope, the usefulness and validity of its message, and the light, playful presentation of the most cogent material. Marelin has not only given us the laws of Creation in very simple, loving language, but also a truly beautiful explanation of how these laws work for our unbounded benefit when we apply them consciously. Applying these laws is easy and fun because we're already doing it all the time anyway and because we already know, inside, that what she says is true. Marelin makes it very clear that we do indeed create our own reality--all the time--good or bad; and that we are FREE to choose good whenever we want. Why not NOW? I love this book because it says everything I have always known, but diidn't know I knew. I am an author of spiritual books also (check my name at Amazon.com), and Merlin's Message is exactly what I need at the absolutely correct time in my life. I now know that I attracted this book into my life. I cannot recommend it highly enough. READ, ENJOY, AND BE-U-TO-FULL!

Really Cool, and so True!
