I first read this series many years ago and fell in love with Ms. Blackwell's stories. I say I "first read" it because I've actually read this whole series at least three times (obviously it's my favorite one, so far), and I still laugh out loud and enjoy it as much as the first time! I've lent the book to my daughter and to all of my friends who like historical Christian fiction, and they adore them as well. Ms. Blackwell, I would LOVE to see the Gresham Chronicles done up into movies! They remind me of Anne of Green Gables with their country charm and wonderful character development! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great characters and beautiful story!

This was the second of Lawana Blackwell's books that I read, giving me a glimpse of how consistently good she is. Since then, I have read everything she has written (I just bought Table by the Window) and can't get enough of them. The Widow of Larkspur Inn was especially endearing because of the people Blackwell incorporated into the story. Gresham is a place where I think all of us would like to live, surrounded by loving (and sometimes quirky) people who enrich lives with their humor and spirit. I believe that some of the Blackwell's strongest characters reside in Gresham; people who are unique and carry the story all the way to the last page. Just realize that you may want to order the next two books in the series before you finish this one...that way you can move right on into the next part of the Gresham Chronicles.

What a fantastic book!

This book was really wonderful. The main character, Julia Hollis had so much strength, faith, hope and love. Julia was married to Phillip, who had hidden his love of gambling. She was forced out of her home when Phillip died because of his gambling debts. She moves her family (3 children and her maid/friend) to Gresham to the Larkspur Inn. The Larkspur Inn was the only property of her husbands that the Bank didn't want. She returns the Larkspur Inn back into the beautiful Inn it was in its glory days. Lawanna Blackwell makes you feel as if you are there in Gresham and all the tenants and the owner and her family are your friends! She meets the vicar, Andrew Phelps, whom she forms a friendship with. I can't tell you what happens with the rest of their lives, because it would spoil the book. Do yourself a favor and pick up this book and enjoy! I loved this book so much, I just ordered the other two in this series!!

This Bible is absolutely wonderful. At the start of each book it tells who wrote the book if known and why the book is important. The text is written in plain English much easier for kids to understand (and myself). There are side texts with sugessted activities and additional explanation of significant stories. I LOVE this Bible - this is the one I read personally now myself and I don't know how I would get through Bible School without it!

Love the historical/background information. This is a good resource for helping today's kids identify with the Bible's historical figures, cultures, and lessons. Without completely altering the poetic language, it offers activities and ideas to improve comprehension and help children see the relevance of the text to their own lives.

I purchased this as a first bible for my 6 year old son. There are bursts of fast facts and passages paraphrased to make it easier for browsing. My son enjoys reading these and even for adults like myself, the background informations are helpful.
The generous amount of illustrations captures his attention and aids in his comprehension of certain passages of the bible.
I can surely say this is the best thing I've bought for my son.

I love this book! It is a can't put down sort of book. I only wish I could have a vet like him. Wow can't imagine the vet making house calls...and I would have put mine in the bathroom with the door closed until he arrived (or else he would have found mine under the bed or some place) Funny stories on places some of his patients actually hid it is a cute very good read. Highly recommend

I hated to get to the last page of this book because I had become so very fond of the author. Some people might not like him. Some might say he seemed at times arrogant or haughty. He might have laughed at the accusation and even agreed as he did not consider himself to be charming. But most of us are charmed, none the less. I am an animal lover, but I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys making the acquantances of strong characters who are a just little bit different. And what would he say of us? Likely that all of his reviewers are normal, but some are more normal than others. Myself included.

Totally Enjoyable -- Very Real, very humorous

The book contains 300 field-tested behavioral rules for an honorable and successful life. The credibility this Jesuit needs in order to tell us how to live comes from his instant truth and usefulness. Most of the maxims have the urgent clarity of tough times, but some show you how to enjoy your adventures best. His perspective is balanced and subtle.

When you use this experiential knowledge you deliberately err on the side of caution, graduating to reality faster than your peers. All of life is covered. Some maxims are explanations on character and common sense, while others advise on how to deal with people. For example, he tells us to keep matters in suspense and to be skilled in conversation. You essentially learn how not to screw up in a complex world without fairy tale endings.

A few readers will say that this "prudent" Spaniard from the 17th century is outdated, and I agree that nowadays you could survive without him. But then don't complain when your superficial person is ignored, your illusions are painfully shattered and former friends leave you in the mud. You could have saved the day if you had only listened!

This knowledge was hard won, like gold, by a reflective man who's life's work was to tell you how not to be a fool. If the advice was bad, this book would have gone out of print a few centuries ago.

Throughout the years, I've read various philosophers and grasped their differant ideologies. I haven't read too much of Gracian. After reading the Art of Wordly Wisdom as traslated by Maurer, I feel as though I've been deprived of this great Philosopher. I wish I had read more of Gracian's work earlier on. This book details various compilations of conduct and thinking. It truly is a gem. It is a Highly recommended book.

Fascinating but often unintelligable

This is a beautifully produced book, and on the whole the translation is at least satisfactory, and frequently elegant in its own right. But the oracle's original train of thought within each half-page aphorism (probably hard enough to follow in the original Spanish) often becomes totally unintelligable in translation.

Perhaps annotations would have helped, but without either the original Spanish or any notes to refer to one sometimes has to simply give up trying to understand the gist, and move on to the next aphorism.

Overall it's a rewarding read, and certainly a book to keep at hand and dip into again and again, but also somewhat frustrating. This is not the ultimate translation.

I first read "The Berkut" almost 20 years ago and the story has never left my mind. I recently purchased a used copy and read the book again and it was everything I remembered it being.

This is an intensely character driven story with the fall of Germany and the Nazi party as the backdrop. While Heywood bends a few historical facts to make his story work, there is sufficient accuracy to occasionally convince you that you're reading a work of non-fiction. Heywood does a masterful job of creating characters you can identify with and understand, even sympathize with. No small feat when you're reading about Nazis.

This is a book that begs to be brought to the small screen as a mini-series.

One of the greatest novels ever!

This was a great book and nearly impossible to put down. The suspense and action in the novel will keep you on the edge of your seat, as it did to me. It's an absolutely brilliant mix of historical fact with fiction... even better than early Clancy novels like "Hunt for Red October". I would recommend this to book to anyone; regardless of their tastes and preferences.

I purchased this book due to the glowing reviews by amazon customers, sadly this is one of the few times that I've been let down. I'm an avid student of history and the Eastern Front of the Second World War is my forte. There is little historical fact in this book when it comes to the Soviet Union, Stalin, the Red Army, or the history of the war on the Eastern Front. The author takes well known, today, German myths and makes them a reality (for his time this might have been alright, but today it is too much to take). His conjectures are baseless, somehow Tiger tanks are on the Eastern front during the Moscow Counter-Offensive of 1941/42, if it wasn't for US Lend Lease the Soviet Union would have been under German rule, forgetting that Lend Lease made up 4% of the Soviet war effort. The Winter is what stopped the Germans, Red Army men do nothing but pillage, rape, dance, and kill in practically all the scenes at the beginning of the book. Sure, it's a fictional book, but the correct historical context could have been kept. There are many other historical errors, why Stalin ignored warnings about the invasion, Stalin screaming that Hitler promised the non-aggression pact would last for a thousand years when in fact the non-aggression pact was for a ten year period, and so on and so forth. If an author changes one event to suit his premise, that's fine, but changing the entire history of the war and that of the Soviet Union is just unacceptable.

Intense Suspence.....Heywood Rocks!

Heywood is a master story teller who keeps you on your toes. This book took me away from my surroundings and put me back into Germany in the last, apocalyptic days of the Third Reich. I witnessed the escape of Adolf Hitler, saw the Russian NKVD Special Forces team went in, trailed him and his SS rescuers relentlessly, and took him off a ship, bound for Argentina and freedom.

The SS Men were men to be admired for their bravery and craftiness. Sometimes I almost wanted them to succeed as I trekked with them across the countryside of southern Europe with their Fuehrer. But then the Russian team, made up of a few men and one woman, were people I came to know really well and identified with. I followed their every step in their search for the monster of Berlin.

I really hated Joseph Stalin, especially when he kept threatening the most capable team in all Russia with death if they didn't bring Hitler to him alive. Stalin was a real slime in my view. Moreover I knew that he was genuinely wicked even more than Hitler was. But eventually he did reward the team generously for their work.

Intense suspense and action. A great read.

I read this book as a Marine sergeant stationed in the Philippines during Operation Desert Storm. Not only are the SS Men, Soviet spies, and American agents, all totally believable, the weapons systems are detailed and the characters are brutally real and fascinating.

My one complaint is that there was not enough of one particular character -- Rosemary Wilson, a WAC officer who stumbles across one of the Hitler Youth girls sneaking Hitler out of Germany. The author seems to have put her into the book just to have a bit of titillating lesbian excitement, then killed her off in a hurry. Frankly, though Heywood is a master at writing a taut, military thriller, his view of lesbians seems to be very old hat, almost stereotypical. Rosemary Wilson is predatory, blundering, greedy, and stupid -- she's so busy drooling over the mysterious blonde fraulein she misses the obvious hints that the girl is on some kind of secret mission!

I loved this book, but why couldn't Rosemary Wilson have gotten the upper hand? Heywood could very easily have written the opposite scenario -- the repressed German girl falls into the arms of the rich American woman and ends up giving away vital clues! That would have been just as sexy and just as exciting, and we could have done without the cheap and really pointless lesbian-bashing that comes out of nowhere.

But make no mistake -- this is a sizzling thriller!

I love the receipes in the book. The only thing I have a problem with is that the book states that "No more weighing", however it does not explain what an actual serving size is, it mentions briefly that you can weigh your food to get an idea of what a serving is, and then use your judgement from then on. Well, being someone that is over weight and has a problem with determining what an actual serving is poses a HUGE problem. That would mean, I WOULD have to weigh my food to figure out whether I am eating a serving or more. The title of the book is misleading, as well as the excerpts on the back and front cover.

I bought this cookbook back in 1993 and have been using the recipes in it ever since. I get so many requests for the recipes I've made from it I have bought extra cookbooks to give out to people as gifts. The title is deceiving because it doesn't seem like those bland old diet cookbooks that you usually get. I lost the weight that I wanted to lose and have maintained my weight by keeping these recipes on hand. Also, I love that the cookbook has a picture for every recipe which is rare in most cookbooks. As stated earlier in someones comments about the serving size......It states how many servings the recipe makes they just figure you can divide equally.

This mysterious and enchanting book takes Alec and Henry to a setting far from the one in the previous book. In the barren deserts of Arabia, they search for their black stallion in his own home. A thrilling tale of survival, and just as vivid, with a race for high stakes and a horse to beat any of the same caliber all thrown in too make the story plot thicken.

This book had me turning the pages, never wanting to put it down. The story was very different from the first, but not as much as some sequels. Farley had a way of keeping his characters in prospective, and in turn, the story again took the readers on an exhilarating ride. A great piece of literature for young tweens to read, though the movie does have violence in it, but seems to make the story even more thrilling. An excellent book I will be sure to show my kids one day.

This book has a great hook and pulls you right in. I enjoyed much of it. However, in some places, the writing was a little confusing. The characters, in general, are interesting and well drawn. The little neighbor girl is a kick, the way the lawyer chooses her clothes and her witnesses was good. I wasn't sure I fully understood the villain and some of the jumps in the plot were a little abrupt. I do recommend this as a good read for sometime when you just want to kick back and suspend disbelief.

With Jackie Flowers still my all-time favorite lawyer-detective, I found myself enthralled with this surprisingly deceptive thriller, even as I was enamored of its travelogue wonder, taking me from Colorado's Eastern Plains to the Rocky Mountain state's most riveting wild lands and canyons.

This was not only a delightfully beguiling mystery, plumbing human nature and the depths of people's souls, but also a veritable visit home to the land where I once lived.

Kane's writing is pure and true, unveiling the complexities of the heart and of the Rocky Mountains with a straight eye and real knowledge.

Stephanie Kane is a master, especially for a first book! She held my interest completely through the entire book. Having lived in Denver, it was great being able to actually identify authentic landmarks and street names. It made me keep reminding myself this was ficton! I couldn't figure out who the murderer was until Stephanie told us at the very end. She kept pointing to so many different possibilities that it was a challenge to try figure it out before the end of the book.

I'm now involved in Quiet Time and am looking forward to her next installment.

Bravo, Stephanie!

When I read the book "Blind Spot" I saw it as a movie. Stephanie Kane's book is one of those fiction books I actually enjoy reading because I can visualize it. Some fiction books have too much written descriptions and I end up losing my train of thought because they don't leave enough room for my own imagination to take over. I really like the way she writes fiction.

It's great to see a fiction book that has a message to those who read it about people with learning disabilities. The best thing is, she is able to write it in a way that captures the readers attention by making it exciting to read. It's a thriller with many hidden messages. The characters are more like real people than fictional characters. Read it and find out for yourself what those messages are! It's a great book. I'd like to see it as a movie someday.

Criminal Defense Attorney Stephanie Kane's debut work is a gripping psycho-legal thriller of the first order, combining the better elements of Lisa Scottoline's legal thriller work & the psychological thriller works of James Patterson.

I was rooted to Blind Spot, right from the first page itself, & as a practicing lawyer, if there is one thing that I have found most impressive in this work, is the total down-to-earth & realistic portrayal of life in the courtroom.

Criminal Defense Attorney Jackie Flowers' life-long wish to work a high-profile murder case, seems fulfilled when she is assigned the task of defending Aaron Best for the murder a multi-millionaire's former wife.

Opposing counsel is the ambitious District Attorney, whose only consideration is to use the case as a vehicle for promoting his political future.

As Jackie's investigation uncovers a series of killings, she realizes that a serial killer is on the prowl, & that she herself could be the killer's next target. What follows is heavy & absorbing courtroom action, with a stunning twist in the tale's tail.

The protagonist, dyslexic criminal defender Jackie Flowers, is one heroine who will linger in our minds for a long time - the manner in which she uses her handicap (dyslexia) to her advantage, makes for a uniquely interesting read.

Psycho-legal thrillers are only a few in number, & save for Wild Justice by Phillip Margolin, or The Letter of the Law by Tim Green, this sub-sub-genre in the Mystery zone, has remained unexploited. It is here that Stephanie Kane steps in & delivers a splendid page-turner.

Blind Spot offers chilling suspense & a topnotch nail-biter. I will want to re-read it. The blurb on the cover announces that Stephanie Kane is all set to publish her next work Quiet Time, & I unquietly await the same!

The book Cry of the Wolf was an awesome book. It has dragons, wolves and griffins, some of my favorite mythical creatures. My favorite character is Adriane. Adriane is about 14; she has two friends' that are total opposites. My favorite part is when she battles the manticore.
Cry of the Wolf is about a girl named Adriane who lets her bonded animal Stormbringer (bonded animal is an animal that balances their magic) go into the magical world Aldenmore with wolves. Adriane gets worried and goes after her. While she looks for her she makes friends with a boy named Zach and gets a dragon for a bonded animal.
The dark sorceress captures her. While she's in the dungeon she finds another mistwolf. With the help of the other animals in the dungeon she gets out. When she gets out she has to battle the manticore . After that Stormbringer comes back with the rest of the pack. So Adriane finds her bonded animal and goes back to earth.

I think I like Adrainne now!

Finally Adrianne is on action. In the book there is alot of action and suspence though one part is kinda sad. Adrianne and her boned animal Storm hav a close bond when these other mistwolves come and Storm decides to join with the pack leaving Adrianne torn. The warrior then goes on a journey to find Storm. She then is on Aldenmore and meets with this one boy named Zach(human) and this strange rock. Soon they become friends and Adrianne soon learns about his past. Adrianne later figures out that the rock is not really what it seems. So far this is my faverite book in the series and I think everyone will love it.

This book is prehaps my favorite out of all of the books. Adriane is willful and strong. When she is pulled into Aldenmore, even if she feels like she can't go on, she keeps her head high and moves forward. The mistwolves are a major part of the entire series and in this book, they are shown in a new light, slightly harsh and sometimes cruel, but always for the safety and wellfare of the pack. I would recomend this book to anyone who is willing to sit down and read a fantasy story about loyalty, friendship and the never ending bond that is love.

fantastic!

I really like how this one is mostly about Adriane and her friendship with Stormbringer. I also love how she meets alot of other magical creatures-=some friends, and some foes. Her experieance on Aldenmor really helped her come out of her shell.

Excellent to the magical series!

Adrianne and Storm share a bond unlike any other. Storm thinks that she is the last mistwolf living since she has no membory of the pack and Adrianne thinks that she has some blood of a mistwolf but not sure yet... until the mistwolf pack arrive and Storm sadly joins. Adrianne cannot since shes not a mistwolf and the leader of the pack believes that humans always bring destruction. When they leave that does not stop Adrianne from finding Storm. With the help of her friends the d flies make a portal though Adrianne gets sucked in to the world of Aldenmore. The action begins as the warrior fights monsters and meets this rock and this boy named Zach. Eventually Adrianne finds Storm and the pack accepts as Adrianne their wolf sister so shes part of the pack!

Comprehensive information, stunning photos, and very interesting and helpful, although a bit too focused on diseases.
I recommend it to any goldfish fan, rookie or expert, specially for ranchu fans, because it has an extensive section about them (not very interesting for me, though).
Nicely done.

An experienced goldfish breeder in my aquarium society recommended this as the best goldfish book. I had five others and would agree with him, however, it is not for the inexperienced goldfish keeper, in my opinion.
The authors chose to put all the things that could go wrong at the front of the book, enough to scare anyone away. They discuss diseases, medicines, surgery, etc. If you have very expensive goldfish and/or are breeding, you want to read this book.

Great if you are a professional. Good for home use.

Good book, I was expecting a more simple book. Comprehensive information. I prefer a simple book, easy to use, basic but helpful information on medications that help on different kind of diseases. Don't need to know on how to perform surgery on a fish and look under a microscope. This is helpful if you are a professional. Great pictures.

This is one of many books about goldfish that I have purchased during the past six months. It is by far the most outstanding. The details provided regarding healthcare, in particular, are very useful. Other books that I have recently read give glossed-over or simplified descriptions of health conditions, and brief (if any) suggestions about treatment. This book has proved to be quite satisfying in that the descriptions are thorough, and suggested treatments are detailed and specific. If you are considering keeping (or already keep) fancy goldfish, this is the only book that I would recommend, other than perhaps a basic aquarium keeper's guide. The photographs and drawings are original, unlike those found in other books (again and again and again). The author is a veterinarian, and he provides explicit instructions for microscopic slide preparation and viewing if you are so inclined. I purchased a microscope and have used it a couple of times to try to diagnose an ailment as discussed in the book. This, however, is not a necessity. Can't say it enough...this is a wonderful book. I highly recommend it.

Not much to add to the title. The book is written by experts and has more information than any other book I've read on Goldfish. The author also has a website with even more information. The illustrations are beautiful. If you intend to raise or just have pet Goldfish, this is the only book you will need.
