While a little knowledge can be dangerous, no knowledge can be deadly. HackNotes Network Security Portable Reference covers an immense amount of readily available information that is required for network and system administrators, who need the information quickly and concisely. This book is a must-have reference manual for any administrator.

Now, let me disclaim that I am not a big fan of thin books claiming to be "comprehensive". In fact, I was deeply suspicious while getting this "Hacknotes" thing. Was I up for a pleasant surprise!! This book does deliver what it promises. It walks a fine line of being both wide and deep, which I am still amazed about. From risk assessment methodologies to "find / -perm 0400" in just 200 pages is no small feat.

I liked that the book and the entire series have a clearly stated goal, and readers can judge for themselves how well it delivered and there is no confusion as to "what should be there". The book is incredibly useful within those stated goals. Obviously, the book is not optimal for actually learning those methods and technologies, but it is an awesome reference in case you forget a thing or two or want to get an overview of a subject within network security. Unfortunately, the book will also benefit "script kiddies" by helping them to "hack without knowing how".

This includes high-level security principles, risk assessment (covering assets, threats and risks), hacking methodology (same as in "hacking Exposed") with details on all the attack stages (Discover, Scan, Enum, Exploit - split along the platform lines, Escalate, etc), wireless security, incident response (identification and recovery), pen testing and hardening. Amazing, but that is not all. It also covers web application security, social engineering, software flaws overview, war dialing and PBX hacking. Of course, all of the above is covered briefly, but thoroughly. Tools are mentioned where needed, and there is no excessive "tool obsession".

Yet another great component is several checklists. Those are used for incident response, security assessment and system hardening (Win, UNIX with some tips on specific servers - FTP, WWW, DNS, Mail etc). Additionally, the book has even more condensed part, "a reference center" with some handy commands from the worlds of DOS, Windows and UNIX/Linux. I liked a nice "important ports" overview.

Overall, unless you are just starting in infosec, get the book and it will come handy more often that you'd think.

On a late summer trip motoring across Europe, I found this petite pocket guide ooohhh soooo French. Although my thoughts were in English, I could pronounce the local wines, cheeses and restaurant dishes with some confidence. My only foe paw was ordering souffle' glace' expecting a gloriously mile high dessert and instead receiving a delightfully frozen demi cup of ice cream...the souffle' waits for no one, so why wait?

Order this little gem now!

What a great little book. It should be required reading for food lovers as well as food servers. For the stiff American tongues, it provides an easy way to correctly order in the best restaurants with confidence and style. Magnifique!

The Competent Implementors Reference

Review Date: 2002-07-19
This text is one I would recommend to anyone with serious aspirations to a professional career in the business of datacommunications networking.

Kenyon has presentated a complex discipline with no sugar coated spin, yet the material is accessible through the illustrations that quantify what are 'reasonable outcomes' in several useful scenarios. This last skill belongs to proven and experienced practitioners, Kenyon has evidently 'walked the walk' and provides the reader with the benefit of his knowledge and experience.

At the very least this text is an essential reference text for modern practitioners of Data Network construction and planning.
- Concept, Implementation, Budget and Risk Management.

At the most enjoyable points, this text provides a way of taking a technologist or student to their respective technical depths, without losing focus on the need to yield practical and cost effective implementations.

The bar has been set to other authors in this area, I hope that Mr Kenyon has more material to come.

THE NETWORK DESIGN BIBLE!!!

I've read many network books, but this one really is beyond anything I've seen so far. This author, unlike others, has got it right, this is a book for engineers, a book written with so much detail it will blow your mind off. I especially loved two of its chapters: Chapter two which is on capacity planning and Chapter four which is on Network Cost Analysis, the two most important aspects that that will turn a network design into a real network.

This book is definitely worth every penny.

Finally a design book written for engineers

I own plenty of design books, unfortunately most of them just rehash design standards or design methods. I've waited a long time for a book that is written from an engineers viewpoint covering material that is relevant to my job and my interests.

My first impressions were great narrative and an exellent technical resource covering difficult and complex aspects such as capacity planning and performance. However, my particular area and what really drew me to this book was network costing and backbone design something that is usually under-represented.

The WAN and ATM sections are extremely well put together with some great insights. Overall, it is methodical, dense in some places definately challenging for the uninitiated but always accompanied with well thought out examples making it very readable, something that I thought made a great change from the norm.

Method is covered, but thankfully only where necessary and anyone like me who is involved in design will benefit from the design templates that are provided.

Overall, I'm extremely impressed and definately looking forward to the accompanying book on higher level security and routing. If it is as well written as this then, for engineers, it should be THE benchmark book set for anyone who is involved in network design. Top marks.

Ms. Evans has written one of the most up to date books on real estate with such great clarity and style. The book provides an insider's look into how the real estate industry works not yesterday BUT TODAY. It shows you how to use the Internet to your advantage. If your not using the Internet in the home buying process and have not bought this book you have missed the boat!...

Ms. Evans has scored big with this phenomenal book. As a Realtor who does the majority of my business off the Internet, I am going to enthusiastically recommend this guide to all of my Internet clients. There is great information contained on every page... info that every person potentially looking to relocate should gather and digest. Somewhat selfishly, I must say that Ms. Evans does do a good job crediting Realtors, unlike most books which portray ALL agents as salespeople "just out for the sale". She emphasizes that people SHOULD select a Real Estate Consultant to assist in the home search and relocation process.

Kudos to Ms. Evans for writing a book that consumers AND their Realtors can read and appreciate!

I purchased this book for a friend who was new to the internet, but I couldn't resist cracking it open. The book is layed out in a very clear, concise format, if you're interested in a function of Yahoo!, there is probably a chapter devoted to it. I was amazed at the versatility of the site...I used the free email, messenger and companion, but had no idea that there was so much more to do on Yahoo!. I love Chess, now I can play online. I love getting up-to-date sports scores, now I can get them through Yahoo!. I love to buy through my computer, now I can comparison shop from a single web site, all through Yahoo! Shopping. If you want to save time and find out everything you can do with your computer, then this book is an excellent way to learn.

If, like me, you make your "home" in "Yahoo! country" or you're new to the neighborhood, you've probably found yourself overwhelmed by the hundreds of things to do and points of interest that should be taken in. But, with so so little time and so much to do, where do you find the assistance that you need? Pick up a copy of "How to Do Everything with Yahoo!" and you'll be on your way.

Unquestionably, this book is the answer. It is jam-packed with 500 pages of information on every conceivable neighborhood and how to get the most out of each one. Whether you are a Yahoo! newbie or a longtime resident, you shouldn't be without this book.

Review Date: 1999-09-27
I'd give it 10 Stars if I could. If you are looking for training on the "nuts-and-bolts" of network marketing and not just "hype" and "rah rah" philosophy, this is IT. Gage takes you step by step through his system which does several things: 1. Keeps you from presenting the business to non-prospects. 2. Reduces personal rejection to NOTHING. 3. Why enrolling and selling will NOT get you to the top of your pay plan. 4. What it DOES take to make it successful and much more.

I was very frustrated in my business until I implemented Gage's principles. It blew my business wide open and gave me the success I was looking for. Today, it's all we do!

An excellent resource

Randy Gage is one of the most entertaining speakers in the MLM industry and this tape set is no exception.

While I don't agree with alot of his prospecting methods (approaching strangers, making lists of friends and family, etc.), this is definitely an audio program you don't want to miss.

A Good beginning

I am a Clipper programmer moving to Delphi and I found this book to be an excellent introduction to programming in Borland Pascal.

I have read several Delphi books and really hate the style that shows you how to browse through the DBDEMOS animals in a simplistic--almost childish--window. Then they move on to programming the Windows API or other esoteric topics.

Mr. Engo move steadily from the very simple to the more complex. This is not a book for the advanced user--probably not even for the intermediate--but it is possibly the best for the novice.

He covers topics such as How to dress up your interface, How to create Multiform applications, Common Programming mistakes, Working with Procedures and Functions and How to build database applications -- with and without SQL.

The biggest disappointment--and I particularly wanted help on this--was the section on reports. It refers to ReportSmith (D3 comes with QuickReports!)

An added bonus is a library of functions--including the source code. They are fairly elementary, but an excellent learning tool, especially for those of us who wrote our own libraries in Clipper, and suddenly feal naked when we come to a new language without years of accumulate functions.

If you are looking for a good introduction to Delphi 3 -- I'm pretty sure everything will work in Delphi 4 -- then this is the book for you.

*THE* Beginner Book for Delphi

Frank Engo's book is excellently written for beginners. Delphi 3 for Dummies is *NOT* a good beginner book. D3fD is still a good book, just not a good one for beginners. How to Program Delphi 3 features a large typeface, screenshots, commented code, and it's not a huge book (a 800 page book might be daunting for newbies). Not really a Pascal reference, but because Pascal isn't difficult to read, his comments would immensely explain what is going on at each line. I own at least 8 Delphi books I can name off the top of my head, and if I've ever seen a good one for beginners, this is it.

Using HTML3 as my only source of reference, I was able to build a multi-paged web site with over 400 links world-wide. If it hadn't been for this book, I'd still be scratching my head and wondering how to start.

I'm a software developer, and spent some time looking at beginner's HTML books recently because my dad asked for a recommendation. This book was my favorite of the ones I looked at.

This book is perfect for newcomers to HTML. The author focuses on all the right things, drawing special attention to common areas of confusion, such as: pairing of HTML begin/end tags; resizing images; alignment of text around images; and so on.

The book starts with super-simple samples. Note: unfortunately, there's a serious mistake in the very first HTML sample! Near the top of p. 28, where the sample has one line which says, "", cross out the "<>", so that it just says, "Hi, my name is Paul Meyers". But don't let this mistake worry you; it's the only one I saw in the book.

The author has a breezy, joking style which I think will work well for beginners, preventing them from being intimidated. But he knows what he's talking about.

This book does not talk at all about fancier stuff like Javascript, ActiveX, and so on. And I think that's a good thing. Those are deep subjects which shouldn't be discussed in a beginning book.

One other problem: The book frequently refers the reader to an accompanying web site, however, that web site is empty! As of this writing, the site says, "Under Construction." Hopefully they'll fix this soon.
