This book is a MUST HAVE for every manager or student who still believes that much has to be known about what is coming to us in the XXI Century. Anyone who has heard or met Dick Nolan, a Professor at the HBS, is very aware of his down to earth, creative, and witty mind. He will be part of Management History and this is not an understatement since, in my view, he already is. He brought, in 1974, IT to the minds of the Directors at Boradrooms by his "Stage by Stage Theory," nowadays commonly accepted by everyone. He foresaw the need for Strategy to meet IT and the Humanities. His previous 1996 book "Creative Destruction" led the way for others to recently follow the field, ideas, and even the book title. He went on to build Nolan Norton & Co., a Management Consulting Firm that everyone has been trying to copy without success. In this new book, once again, Dick et. al. compiled the best thoughts he alreday had before "the internet bubble." He waited to get this book published because he dosen't like to be seen as a forecaster. However, whatever he says, will be done in the future by every sustainable business. His thoughts and wisdom have created a school of thought from which even the Balanced Scorecard came to be a reality in 1988!

As a Kellogg MBA student, this text was suggested reading for an IT Strategy course. My understanding of IT for strategic advantage was greatly enhanced through the readings in this book. I believe it is a must read for anybody who wants to know what some of the World's most successful companies are doing to enhance their current product with technologies currently available to everyone.

Harvard Business School and Amazon.com case study

While attending Delivering Information Services at The Harvard Business School, and during the Session on "Case: Barnes & Noble vs. Amazon.com," I discovered this book. The book is now used in the course "Competing in The Information Age." This course is geared toward MBA students who want to work in the Technology industry.

What attracted my immediate attention was the course description which said that "class participation accounts for 50 percent of your grade." This book embodies The Harvard Business School "Case Method" which encourages interaction among the class participants. This is the context from which my reading interest expanded.

The content of the book is organized around "the big picture" and does not get bogged down into minutia. The content grows from other books by the editors: Globalization, Technology and Competition; Future Competition in Telecommunications; Reengineering the Organization: Transforming to Compete in the Information Economy; and Creative Destruction: A Six-Stage Process for Transforming the Organization.

The underlying theme of this book is the internet and how it is changing business.

This book has been an incubator for other books coming into the market with a similar title. For example, Scott McNealy, Chairman of Sun Microsystems, has co-authored "The Power of Now: How Winning Companies Sense and Respond to Change Using Real-Time Technology."

Another spawned title is "Adaptive Enterprise: Creating and Leading Sense-And-Respond Organizations", by Haeckel and Slywotzky.

The authors are able to influence discussion significantly on an on-going basis. Professor Bradley is Chairman of the Executive Program in Competition and Strategy Area at Harvard. This area includes high powered thinkers and lever-pullers, such Professor David Yoffie who is on The Board of Directors of Intel Corporation and whose case studies have sold over one million copies. Professor Noland is the current Faculty Chairman of Delivering Information Services which has been a big success story for decades.

Because the editors are so influencially "wired into" many large corporations and academic communities, I think this book will continue to show continuing influence, as evidenced by boopks spawned from the subject and title.

Anyone will interest in internet technology should enjoy this book as I did.

Almost two years ago I was lucky enough to find this wonderful reference book. At the time I was just getting stated as an Internet consultant and was in great need of some technical material. Little did I know that this book would play such a big part in my future. I'll admit that at first, some of the material was a bit over my head. However, as my work drew me deeper into the tech aspect of web servers, I always had the answers I needed close at hand. It's hard to believe that with all the advancements in technology, this book has not been outdated. In fact, until recently, I would reach for it on a frequent basis. I would still be reaching for it today, but unfortunately my copy was book-napped!

It covers all the topics a webmaster needs to know: bandwidth calculation, httpd server setup, html, and cgi forms. The information is presented in a clear manner for the novice without talking down or being "cute". Read it cover to cover and it will take you to journeyman webmaster status.

A wonderfully written and illustrated book about Santa and his wife Tiemma whom "with the help from the magic of children" and fairies play a central role in Christmas. The illustrations are beautiful and mystically realistic. I think Santa and Tiemma must really look like that. Just fabulous.

This story is fabulous - A little girl learns of the power of children and that magic is everywhere, all you need to do is look. A couple of Snow Fairies tell the story of Tiemma Claus, Santa's wife, and how she, with the help of children, help Santa's growing problem of getting to all the world's children in one night. Tiemma is the star, and she is a beautiful, white haired, thoughful, woman full of love, insight, and inspiration. Empowering of the female role in a traditionally male story - without downplaying the importance of Santa's role. Christmas takes on an ancient pagan element as the north polers celebrate the Winter Solstice, magic is conjured, and joy abounds. Magical illustrations... Thank you Ms. Gaffington!!

This is a magical story. The illustrations are gorgeous, and the story is both fun and meaningful. It's a traditional story of Santa's yearly gift-giving trip, but it's focus is on Tiemma Claus, Santa's wife, who finds a special and magical solution to Santa's growing problem of reaching all the children in one night. There are elves, raindeer, children and snow fairies. Compassion, clear and deep thinking, and love and joy abound. I came looking for other books by the author, and am sad to find this is the only offering so far. Definitely an author (and illustrator) going on my "Watch for new books" list.

Review Date: 2002-10-07
This book is to service level management consultants and prospective buyers of SLM solutions what Hoover's handbooks are to business intelligence - a complete and comprehensive survey of SLM solutions from major and minor vendors.

The information in this book is divided between timeless reference material and time-sensitive information. The reference material is comprised of a thorough discussion of what service level management is, what is required to implement it, and the value and ROI that you should expect from both the processes and the tools. The reference part of the book also extends to how to effectively manage the selection and procurement process of a solution. This material is on the mark, is consistent with best practices in service level management, and is clearly written. In fact, after reading the author's earlier book, "Foundations of Service Level Management" (ISBN 0672317435) I expected the depth and detail in which the reference part of this book delved.

Time-sensitive material that comprises the second part of the book consists of a collection of vendor brief that are arranged alphabetically from Aligent Technologies to WiredMinds, Inc. Each brief is similar in format to Hoover's handbooks in that you are shown an 'At a Glance' view of the vendor (product/service offering, SLM solution, date founded, number of employees, target customer and operating requirements for the solution). This is followed for each vendor by a more detailed view that covers product details (functionality, distinguishing features, support and pricing). One nice touch here is that each product is also depicted in an architecture diagram. Each vendor brief concludes with a summary, strengths and limitations from Enterprise Management Associates' (the book's authors) viewpoint.

In addition to the material in the book the publisher's website contains a wealth of additional material, which augments this book and adds considerable value to it.

If I could change one thing about the book it would be the title, which should be renamed to "SLM Solutions: a buyer's guide - 2002 Edition", which subsequent editions appearing twice a year. Yes, the reference material is likely to remain the same, but the vendor information is in a constant state of flux and will render this excellent resource obsolete unless it's updated at least every six months.

Overall, this is an impressive compendium of information that reflects deep and exhaustive research and the authors' extensive knowledge of the subject.

Perfect for businesses comtemplating SLM expenditures

It's interesting how networks, computer systems, and software applications have evolved towards the notion of information services. The industry is looking at information technology in terms of services provided for business operations, and that has caused interest in buying, deploying, and managing services instead of networks and applications.

This book is a buyer's guide into the numerous products that manage services in one way or the other. The first 50 pages are devoted to concepts in service level management, while the remaining 300 or so pages describe some 70 SLM solutions along several dimensions, including product functionality, distinguishing features, data sources, third-party product reliance, support for service-related standards, pricing/packaging, and strengths/weaknesses. I would think that readers would study the first 50 pages carefully and use the product description section as a reference. The 50 page overview is excellent, from both a technical and business point of view.

I almost gave the book four stars because it is inevitable that SLM vendors with change their products, some will go out of business, and new ones will come into play, and thus the book would become obsolete in relative short order. However, the very last page of the book promises a 2nd edition. A book of this sort should probably be updated annually.

Also, I almost gave the book 4 stars because it has no references to other sources. But section 2 refers to several SLM standards bodies and lists URLs, including ITIL, Telemanagement Forum, and IEFT.

There was just one thing about the book that puzzled me: In the table of contents, about a dozen of the 70 companies are in bold, and I couldn't figure out why. However, that problem wasn't worth taking off a star.

In sum, the book is perfect for businesses comtemplating SLM expenditures. I would expect to see it updated from time to time to keep up with the industry.

SLM Solutions: A Buyer's Guide - Review

Review Date: 2002-10-24
The analysts at EMA have written a very clear guide to helping IT people prepare for, evaluate and compare, and implement an SLM solution. The book is divided into two parts. The first part is a detailed discussion of the important facets of Service Level Management: what it is, all of the things that it encompasses, how to create and negotiate SLAs (Service Level Agreements), creating RFPs to evaluate SLM offerings, and some of the nitty-gritty around the actual measurements. The second part is a synopsis of the majority of commercial software products available for SLM. Each vendor gets a four or five page write-up that summarizes key features, the pricing model, expected support costs, and a brief EMA summary of the product and company, including strengths and limitations. If you need to implement an SLM solution, don't expect to find all of your questions answered just by looking at the product comparisons. Chapters 3 and 4 provide a wealth of information about how to evaluate solutions based on your specific environment and then how to write the RFP so that you will get the information to meet your specific needs. The one thing that is missing from the Vendor Briefs is any mention of open source software. In some cases, open source solutions my provide a better fit than COTS (Commercial Off The Shelf) software products at a somewhat lower price point. Regardless of the direction chosen (commercial or open source), the information in "SLM Solutions: A Buyer's Guide" will provide the reader with important information about the whole SLM process.

This book isn't about just creating a website--it's about running a business! With the help of this book, I was able to come up with a plan for expanding my business into e-commerce. The book is very readable, and full of sensible advice. Each chapter moves you closer to making your idea a reality. It starts with getting real about what's going to work and steps you right through everything you need to know, all the way through building your site in the most economical way and right up to marketing it. My hat's off to this author for writing a book that's a good read and good advice, too.

A seminar for the E-ntrepreneur
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-06-15
Here, at last, is a concise introduction to the world of e-commerce for the semi-savvy professional. Terminology, strategic planning, branding, advertising, traffic generation, and, oh yes, technology... every topic budding e-ntrepreneurs need to consider before risking their futures is here presented with clarity and grace. One caveat: those looking for strictly the technical or strictly the business side of e-commerce will find this book lacking. To explain the whole, the author had little choice but to abbreviate some of the parts.

Like most titles published by Microsoft Press, this book has a decidedly pro-Redmond feel, with frequent references to bCentral, FrontPage, and other MS products and services (most notably in the section on server platforms... the author would have you believe your only choices are 2000 or NT). However, these product placements do not diminish the flow of the chapters or the value of the advice.

Alas, no one book can turn you into a dot-com success story overnight (unless Jeff Bezos' diary is for sale). But this one should certainly help.

An excellent basic primer for e-commerce entrepreneurs.

Read this book, learn as much as you can about the IP Filter implementation on Solaris 10 (lots of questions about IP Filter), have considerable hands on experience with Solaris 10 and you should pass the exam. The exam is not easy, but this book provides a good starting point. Hopefully someone will write a exam prep book for the SCNA exam for Solaris 10. Thanks!

From guidelines expressly useful for helping female speakers get taken seriously, to avoiding common and embarrassing communication pitfalls, to designing a truly "go-getter" motivational speech, Speaking Globally is first-rate and very highly recommended reading for business travelers and international speakers.

Best of all this book inspires you to seek opportunities to test your speaking skills. As a former MBA student and someone who occasionally introduces guest speakers, leads meetings and presents material, I only wish I would have read it sooner.

If you ever have a need to conduct business with people from other countries, this book could help you. It is full of helpful facts and tips for speakers who must cross the cultural barriers to good communication. Not only is it loaded with good practical information (such as how to make a toast at dinner in Finland), it is easily read because of the clear writing style and humor. I keep a copy by my phone as a quick reference before calling my contacts around the world. I highly recommend it as essential reading for anyone who must deal with business people around the world.

Elizabeth Urech obviously knows what she is writing about and it shows in her prose. Reading this book is like having the best advice, support (and encouragement) from a coach before approaching what is for most people one of the most nerve-wracking, unsettling, scary things in the world..public speaking. Read it and you will be better prepared, more confident, and no doubt more successful.

Ms. Urech gives tons of information in her book. If you want to get ahead -- and make no mistake about it, effective communication is THE key for getting ahead -- you will not only buy this book and read it. No, instead you will work through it, practice the details, until they become second nature. My recommendation is that you not just buy one book, but that you buy several, and give them to other friends with ambitions. Then work through the book together. You'll have fun AND you'll learn what you really need to know. (And, as others have remarked, it's especially good for the international speaker!)

I had lots of questions when I upgraded to Windows 98. This book answered every one of them. I was especially impressed with the details on using FAT32 and the Active Desktop. I've seen books from Microsoft Press, too, but I prefer this one. Why? Because it's independent. I don't trust Microsoft to admit that there are bugs or problems with Windows or Internet Explorer. This book doesn't have to follow the Microsoft party line, so I trust the authors when they tell me how to handle ActiveX components and Java applets. I'm glad I bought this book. I recommend it to anyone who wants to become a power user.

I bought this book and one other when I upgraded to Windows 98. This book has paid for itself several times over, while the other book was practically useless. Whenever I have run into a problem or have a question, instead of calling an expert friend or tech support, I have picked-up this book and have found the answers I need. It was a great help during installation, and clearly explains the various Windows 98 settings and features. The coverage of Internet Explorer 4 and the various other Windows applications (like Outlook Express) has been terrific. Now my friends think I'm an expert. I can't recommend this book enough.

Never have I read a better book on the topic. J.C. covers it exactly how it was. Today is so different - spam mail and myspace and RSS feeds, etc...

This book gets my nostalgic every time I pick it up and read it. Yes, that first review was me, "PunkaPixie" almost 10 years ago. I just had to write another review (don't know if its allowed), but THIS BOOK DESERVES TO HAVE ANOTHER FIVE STAR REVIEW!!!!! Why oh why is it being shunned to the bargain bin!?!?! LONG LIVE THIS BOOK! And bless the heart of Ms. J.C. Herz who one day, long ago, back when I wrote this review, had written me an e-mail which is buried somewhere in a text file. Wherever she may be, I wish her well!

Long live the days of IRC and usenet... oh how I miss it so.

I am staring at my copy of this book right now actually. Still proudly displayed in my bookcase. This book has always and will always be close to my heart. At 25 years of age now, I will never forget the good old days when the internet was a wee baby - long before it was tainted with the things that "could be".

This is a great book for anyone curious to know what life was like before the "mass influx" of people on the 'Net. And an even better companion for those who long to remember.

This book should be supplied to all users of the web. It gives one of the best views of an addicts use to the medium. From the first tentative steps, all the way through to over load! The author MUST be praised for her writing, and content.

A DEFINATE MUST!

This book is too darn coool. I just gotta buy it now.

I read this book 2 years ago, when I borrowed it from the library. Since I have borrowed many, many times. It never gets boring. It provides a look on the net when the most commercial stuff was mlm scams and chainletters. *sigh* The good ol' days...

You'll be nodding your head in agreement the whole time!

Oh my gosh, when i found this book in the "new book" section over 2 years ago at my library I thought it was cool fer the cover.

Then I read it.. oh my GOSH never ever have I ever read a book I agreed with SOOOO MUCH. The whole time I was reading about the little net adventures of J.C. Herz, I was smiling because I too have done it.. the usenet postings, the late night IRC excursions as well as the inevitable dip into MUD.

This book is great for anyone of the "olden" days of the online world. And for those vets.. feast yur eyes on the MindVox section.
