This author is also one of my professors at my college. I must say - if you think his books are full of good information, you should try taking a class with him! A bit eccentric in person - I wish he wrote more that way! To me the best part of this book was the introduction to the idea of directory services in both Windows NT and Netware. I found it very fufilling! Unlike the previous reviewers, I found the MacIntosh stuff totally unnecessary - Who the heck uses those anymore?

I CANNOT BELIEVE I JUST FOUND THIS BOOK!

Where has this book been? The previous reviewer was not kidding about the Macs! What is really sad is this book was out a year and a half ago according to the Amazon release date and it is the only book on NT that I have seen that even mentions Netware 5 let alone discuss the issues of interconnectivity (along with Netware/IP)

The diagrams could have been a little better and I don't know where to begin on that f@#$%-up cover. But it is solid. It is only for NT 4.0 - do not look for W2K - but the way M$ is doing the MCSE's, I would focus on making NT 4.0 survie integration and interoperability with UNIX and Netware which makes this book FOR YOU!

Order it here because you sure as heck will not find it anywhere else! (Oh yeah, the author's e-mail address is wrong - bounced back) Oh Steve! If you are out there - could you post an e-mail address please?

Best Book on Integrating NT 4 with Macs & Unix

The chapter on integrating MAC's with NT is worth the price of the book. The author has clearly done every step himself before, rather than the large number of authors who simply rephrase information available from Microsoft documentation. The tips and warnings were extremely helpful and helped me solve a problem getting three Mac G4's connected to an NT server box.

THE MOST UP TO DATE BOOK ON Windows NT

This is quite a wonderful book to recommend to your friends and colleagues. I wish this book was easier to find. I wandered on it by accident here at AMAZON.COM and I found this book to be the most accurate, up-to-date book on Windows NT. I also found thisbook to take on topics that other books ignore. This book isn't geared towards passing an exam or copy-catting the Microsoft books - It is simply a good solid technical book on NT Internetworking that you can read from cover to cover.

This Book is incredible!!!

If you are already saturated with all of the garbage out there on NT, you may be as well reluctant to buy this book. If you can find in a browseable bookstore, look through it and see what you can get out of it.

I LOVED THE MAC AND UNIX Stuff. In fact, I found more in the chapter on UNIX than in any other NT-Unix book I have seen so far.

There is no information on NT 5.0 - this is still an NT 4.0 book but it looks really goods so far. I'll keep you posted.

Wireless Intelligent Networking is an excellent publication with rare characteristics: easy to read, well organized and extremely efficient in what concerns quantity and quality of information. Technical protocols, market trends, services deployment, integration, among other IN hot issues are thoroughly dissected in WIN. This is definitely an essential tool for anyone in the Telco business, saving time and money in training for beginners and helping experts on a daily basis. A "dot.safe" investment for any company in the industry!

An excellent general treatment of WIN.

The telecommunications industry needs a lot of standards and
detailed information for true inter-operability. So, no book
is going to be perfect in its coverage of the material - there
is simply too much information.

Having said that, I find this book to be an excellent way to
understand the issues associated with WIN. It provides the basis
for further study and points people in the right direction for
increasing their knowledge.

I use this book as a basic reference and recommend it highly.
You will not go wrong reading this book - whether you are a
wireless telecom professional (which I am) or not.

An excellent multi-disciplinary text

The book succeeds in presenting an inherently complex and multi-disciplinary subject in a clear manner with sufficient references to allow further study as needed.

The book provides a broad view of wireless networking, including financial, market, and technical views. The technical information is well organized and presented from more than one perspective. Rather than presenting volumes of minute details, architectural principals are introduced and illuminated.

This is one of the outstanding technical books that I have ever read. I would highly recommend it to experienced hands in the fields of wireless or wireline voice networks.

I would also recommend it to beginners with the following cavaet: this book plumbs some fairly deep waters, and does not delve too deeply into the related fields that are the building blocks of Wireless Intellegent Networking. SS7, AIN, PSTN architecture, and mobility management are all presented, but having some previous background (or somebody handy who can fill in details) would be a big help.

Good resource for writers new to the Internet

Review Date: 2000-11-30
Writers.net is probably the most "reader-friendly" of all the specialized Internet guides on the market; each of the nineteen chapters of Writers.net is devoted to a particular genre of writing. Writers of mysteries, romances, science fiction, screenplays, and other styles need not burrow through endless pages to get to the sections that interest them most--each chapter is well-structured and organized to give the writer the resources s/he needs before logging onto the Internet and searching blindly for a paying e-publication or research database.

Gach catalogs URLs by the gigabyte, offering links to poetry and fiction mega-link lists, authors' and agents' homepages, research resources, and more. Most URLs listed are followed by a brief description of the site, while some chapters have the look of a printed "bookmark" file from a writer's web browser.

All writers will especially want to study the book's final chapter, which is devoted to Internet censorship and copyright issues, a sticky subject for writers on and off the computer. URLs and descriptions of the more affluent writers' unions and leagues are profiled here, as is information essential to any writer confused about her/his rights.

As with any printed directory of Websites, there is no guarantee that every URL listed in Gach's book will still be valid once you bring Writers.net home from the bookstore (this book is three years old, mind you). To combat the ever-changing climate of the Internet, Gach maintains a Webpage of book updates on his personal homepage, where one may find additions, URL changes, and even a sample chapter from the book.

Gach's book tells how to use your computer connections to get published online or in print in any of several genres, and there are dozen of ideas that will enrich a writers soul, mind, and pocketbook. It is an essential tool for computer-literate writers. --Mason West

Bearing in mind that this book is written for people who already know XSLT, it's probably the best and maybe only book out there. There are lots of starter books but I couldn't find another advanced book. I haven't needed a lot of information contained in it, but I got more than I bargained for in the chapters I did use. It's probably not much of a reader, more of a reference book to pull out when you're stuck on a tough problem.

If you're trying to learn XSLT, this book isn't for you. Perhaps try the author's web site or any of the other resources out there. I'm a learn-as-you-go kind of person who picks up things very quickly, but this book would certainly have confused me if I didn't already know what I was doing.

This book does not teach you the concepts of XSLT. Rather, it truly delivers on a promise of providing answers to common problems. While often books use code to only illustrate the concepts explained, "XSLT and XPath On The Edge" has tons of real world code, some of which I was able to use straight from the book(without changing a thing).
I believe this book really helps to bridge the gap between just understanding the basics of XSLT and using it for real life, practical applications.

my first impressions are

a) this book sits right next to Michael Kay's book, as it is a great
reference to when u have specific problems i.e. ' How do i format dates ? '
and ' How do i group ' and 'How do i use keys'.

b) the level of examples and techniques is a step above introductory.

c) the latter half of the book delves into framework issues; modular
components, extending XSLT, functional modules, and

grouping
sorting
numeric manipulation
string and text manipulation

general formatting
character encoding and entities
the above subjects are all detailed in a concise manner, perfect for
reference

the following subjects are an indepth read;

framework: quite a large amt of discussion of how to break apart into
reusable elements

client side msxml: this will get the novice going

server side proc with cocoon: this will get the novice going

overview of XPATH: very detailed overview of more medium level techniques

using extensions : the clearest illustration and techniques of extending
xslt that i've read

overall i can highly recc.

This is an excellent XSLT/XPATH resource! However, please be aware that the "Unlimited-Edition.com" website/resource is no longer available! A big reason why I bought this book was for the updated content it promised. But, that was 2001, this is 2006, and any updated content that may have been available is no longer accessible.
Still, this book can stand on it's own feet, and is an invaluable resource, all by itself! Highly recommended!

This book is the only one I came across that explains major internet job sites and what type of information they can provide. If one is a high school student, college student, or career changer, there is a list of the sites that offer free personality tests that can determine the best jobs out there for the individual. For people who know what jobs they are seeking there is a comprehensive list of web sites offering job openings as well as networking organizations and headhunters. Once you find the job you are interested in there ia a list of web site that will help you determine reputation of the company you are applying to and how well financially they are doing. In addition, you will find tips on interview techniques and writing cover letters as well as references on salary negotiation. Quick read, well worth anyone's time.

I was able to find the answer to every job search question I had, and then some, (from how to write a resume and cover letter to the best place to post your resume to learning what salaries and benefits you should ask for) by using the sites listed. I also liked learning how to find "insider's information" about the company you're applying to. Would highly recommend this book to anyone.

Excellent comparisons of HW firewalls vs. SW firewalls, and
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2002-12-21
This book prefaces itself in that its intended purpose is not to cover all types of firewalls (e.g.corporate), but just personal firewalls. There are some great dives into previously unanswered questions I had:

1. Would I run a SW firewall if my DSL router already says it has a firewall built-in (answer is yes for a home LAN or a DSP WAN connection, no for low-speed dial up...)

2. How do various SW products (McAfee, BlackIce, ZoneAlarm) compare.

3. How do various HW products compare (DSL modems vs. Cable modems).(From a security viewpoint, there is a clear winner--you'll have to buy the book to find out though or else if I told you Time-Warner would send out someone to unplug my cable in retaliation)

4. How do I test these things once I get them installed? This topic was worth the price of the book alone...he emphasizes doing both Before & After tests to verify that insecure connections just become changed to secure connections. How many people might just install the SW or HW & then wonder "Did it really work? "What's different now than before?")

Overall, more useful information than I ever expected to find in this little book!

Expresses the minimal level of security competence
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2003-11-16
In the current environment where cyberbaddies are lurking everywhere, anyone who connects to the Internet without protection are a direct danger to themselves and an indirect danger to everyone they communicate with. There are many ways in which a user can find protection, and one of the primary ways to be protected is to install a firewall on your system. A firewall is either a software or hardware device that scans traffic to and from the system and flags or blocks any that is deemed suspicious.
Written for the beginner, the technical level occasionally rises up beyond what the absolute beginner can be expected to understand, but that is not a negative. As most system administrators will tell you when they are overcome with a fit of honesty, the ignorance of users is the greatest single security threat. Therefore, in my opinion, if a user cannot reach the point where they can understand all of the material in this book, then they are a threat and a prime target for a cyber attack. I consider the material in this book to be an expression of the minimal level of competence and commend the authors for being right on the mark.
The initial segment of the book is a set of explanations of what firewalls are and why they are needed. In the second segment, some of the most widely used personal firewalls are described in detail, including how to install and configure them. The third and final segment is a discussion of general security concepts and tools you can use to test the security of your system.
An excellent introduction to the critical role of firewalls in securing computer systems, this book should be read by anyone who does not know the basics of protection using firewalls.

not perfect, but quite useful

This books leaves a mixed impression. First of all, although the book is called "for absolute beginners", it is not written as a book for housewives who never saw a computer before. It is interesting, informative, and the reader is assumed to be knowledgeable and capable of making informed decisions. In fact, one has to have a certain understanding of Windows (yes, it is not oriented towards Mac users) and TCP/IP to understand what the author is talking about. The author obviously has very extensive knowledge of internet security, and the book includes much of his practical knowldge. The negative side is that less than 1/3 of the book is generic and applicable to any firewall, i.e., discusses why home networks need to be protected, and where are the potential areas of vulnerability. The rest is step by step description of how to install and configure several commercial firewalls. Frankly, I do not understand who needs all these details since installation/setup guidelines are always included in the software manual which one gets in printed or electronic form together with the purchased program, whereas it is an obvious fact that any particular version of the program gets obsolete very quickly. I doubt that any of the descriptions of software from the book remains relevant two years after the book came out in 2001. I would rather prefer to see more generic (and less dependent on the software version) discussion of how to take advantage of the features present in most firewalls (blocking certain protocols, applications, IP addresses, etc.). All this said, this book is "beginner's guide" only because it does not get into too many details of what exactly firewalls do, and how they do it. However, those few items which are discussed are covered in significant depth and on a good professional level.

Don't switch to Cable or DSL without this book!

If you have a high-speed always-on cable or DSL connection then you need a personal firewall to protect yourself and your computer or home network from Internet hackers. This book covers both hardware and software based personal firewalls, including ZoneAlarm, BlackICE Defender and McAfee. You'll also learn how to lock down Windows security and test your computer's defenses by using any of a number of free Internet scanning services. Best of all, with this book you don't have to be a security expert or even know what a personal firewall is to get started using one. Highly recommended reading!

I have a new three level house and wanted to connect all the family computers onto one network. Drilling holes in the floors and running wires all over the place is definitely not my thing, so I started to look around for another solution. After learing about wireless networking (wi-fi), I can't imagine why anyone would use anything else.

This wi-fi book answered all my questions. Even though I was nervous about opening up a computer and putting a wi-fi card in, this book took me through it with steps and pictures. I've looked at the other wi-fi books at the bookstore, but this one definitely stuck out. Lots of good pictures and directions.

Excellent beginner's guide!

I read this book knowing little about wireless networking, but over the course of the book I learned not only about how to set up my PC and my home for Wi-Fi, but also something about the technical details of Wi-Fi and where it will be going in the future. Although I knew enough to know that I wanted Wi-Fi in my home, reading this book definitely helped me choose the right products and learn to make the most of them. Thanks Harold -- without this book I'd still be working within a twelve-foot radius of my cable modem!

It was with a little trepidation that I decided it was time to go Wi-Fi. Being a Harold Davis fan for some time, I picked up a copy of his book. Good decision! To start with he helped me decide whether to get a wirelss card for my old faithful laptop, or to get a new one. I went for a new machine (SONY VAIO TR3A). Setting it up was easy. With his book's step-by-step instructions, it was almost as though I had the author at my side. Highly recommended.

Best wireless book for beginner!

If you want to find hotspots, connect to hotspots, or set up your own wireless network, all using Wi-Fi technology, this is the best book for you. Everything in this book is very simple, but you find information here you will not find elsewhere. So this book is useful and also lots of fun. I highly suggest.

This books starts with a simple explanation of the basics in the first chapter and builds from there. The thorough index allows you to quickly find the topic your looking for and the exhaustive examples allow you to quickly review the pertinent material. A thorough treatment of active filter design is covered by the time the reader finishes the last chapter. This book not only serves as an excellent introduction to the material for the novice/beginner, but also serves as an invaluable reference to the seasoned engineer.

Active filter design was my favorite class when I was in graduate school, which uses this book as the text. I enjoyed it very much since it is well-written and I really learned a lot from it. The contents are organized so well from basic concepts to comprehensive theory and then to the various practical examples. I like this book not only because it is a good text book for study, but it is also a must for your reference collection as an engineer since this book is a complete theoretical and practical guide for active filter design. Now, I am working as an Electrical engineer focusing on Digital Signal Processing, and I am so glad that I have this book in hand because I always need to refer to it during my work. As a real cookbook for success in filter design, this book will benefit the lay person as well as the experienced engineer.

A definite text in active filter design.

Chapter 1 of this book introduces the engineer/student to all the basic concepts throughout the book. Many novel concepts are introduced here, as well as some little-known techniques that are still quite relevant today. Everything is tied together towards the end of the book. The final chapter dealing with components is a must-read for anyone wishing to understand components: MIL rating, reliability, drift, etc. This book presents a thorough treatment that is useful to the student as well as the practicing engineer.

An Excellent Book!

A practical book describing a step by step procedure in designing active filtering. The book is great for beginner and graduate level courses. It is also an excellent one as a reference in industry in filtering and signal processing. I read and learned the entire book in my master program 9 years ago and I still go back and use it.
