Mobile IP theoryReview Date: 2005-12-13
The authors did a great job in writing the book in a very simple English and using an informal style, which helps the reading by not making the text too tedious.
The first couple of chapters gave me a good overview of the basic principles of Mobile IP. The illustrations used in the book are very helpful to better explain the concepts described in the text. Some were a little too confusing because of all the acronyms and several times I had to give a quick glance at the pictures to resume myself the situation. The third chapter goes on with security issues that come back in almost all of the rest of the book. The fourth chapter goes in detail on how to set up a lab environment to apply the concepts explained in the rest of the book.
The following chapters show some basic case studies of mobile IP applications: Campus Mobility, Metro Mobility and Cisco Mobile Networks. These chapters require a good knowledge of tunneling, VPNs, routing and wireless concepts.
The last two chapters were more interesting for me as chapter 8 talked about scalability of the mobile IP solutions and the differences between different forms of IP addressing. The last part of the chapter shows some basic troubleshooting techniques. Chapter 9 called "A look ahead" is very valuable because it describes the various techniques discussed to bring the mobile IP technology to meet the IPv6 standard and what the idea of Cisco is in this area.
The book is thought as a companion book for studying and has the usual end-of-chapter questions that help the reader to check his understanding of the last things learned. The answers given in the Appendix A to all the questions are very explicative and help to review the entire concepts seen in the book.
A good book that has given me the basic understanding of the theory of Mobile IP. I suggest it both for those who want to have a look at Mobile IP and also to those who want a deeper understanding of the topic. A real-world case study would have given this book a top class touch.
Mobility vs. NomadicityReview Date: 2005-07-21
Stefan Raab and Madhavi W. Chandra, authors, share their experience designing and developing network solutions using Mobile IP. Their credentials are impressive and give the learner confidence in the information they are imparting.
This book is designed for network administrators who are familiar with IP routing, protocols, applications, and Cisco IOS. Even though the real-world situations are generic, the configuration, troubleshooting, and management are explained using Cisco IOS. IT personnel who want to implement mobile technology can definitely benefit from this book as it explains the basics thoroughly before giving detailed examples and explanations. The index is complete; there is not a glossary. At the end of each chapter are review questions, so this book could easily be used in a classroom or in self-study. There are two appendices: one contains the answers to the chapter questions and the other contains the SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) MIB (Management Information Base) objects supported by Cisco IOS Mobile IP.
Raab and Chandra organized their book into nine chapters, each of which is a facet of Mobile IP. After an introduction of concepts and requirements of mobility and wireless networking, a detailed discussion of the Mobile IP protocol includes features, functions, and components. As with any network today, there are security concerns with protocol authentication and dynamic keying. The material presented in these early chapters is used in the scenarios in following chapters.
Mobility solution examples are provided for basic topologies, client-based Mobile IP, high availability, AAA servers, reverse tunneling, firewall and NAT traversal, and integration with VPN technologies. Basic configuration is introduced which leads into integration topics of redundancy, QoS, and VPN. The management and operation discussion leads to Home Address, scalability, and server management.
Future trends and uses for Mobile IP conclude the topics of this book: layer 2 integration challenges, Mobile IPv6, unstructured mobility, and ad hoc networking.
This book follows the linear, logical model of textbook organization that progresses from basic facts, to advanced topics, and concludes with end-to-end solutions. The authors feel that this book also enables someone to jump in at any chapter and navigate the subject by features and environment in which they are interested. They have created cross-references to assist readers who do not want to use the book in linear form. This works well for users with previous knowledge of the subject.
The examples, figures, and illustrations are clear, concise, and designed to help learners understand a complex subject. Cisco IOS knowledge is prerequisite, although the authors' expertise and explanations give logic behind implementation and options.
This book deserves a rating of 5 (highest) and is recommended for IT personnel wanting to move into true "mobility."
Mobil IP Primer and MoreReview Date: 2005-07-20
Reviewer: Glenn Bradley, Senior Network Engineer
Reviewer Certification: CCDA, CCNA, CCNP, ISSP
The authors have given us a text that serves as an excellent introduction to Mobile IP technologies. Using real-world scenarios limited enough in scope, they convey how Mobile IP is currently being used and hint at the size of an offering it is destined to become.
I would have liked to see a little more focus on the trend of Mobile IP in the `contained' workplace. However, the examples of PDA's, laptop's, fleet service applications, etc. are well laid out, easy to understand and presented in an order that leads the reader from an introductory approach through some reasonably high level discussion.
Like most recent Cisco Press books I have been looking at there is a minimum of page-flipping, back and forth to get from the text to the figures and tables. This may not seem like a monumental accomplishment but if you go through as many books as I do; the little things can become quite annoying. I should also mention here that another of my peeves; poor editing, is NOT present. Good solid references, annotations, etc.
If you are planning on getting into the Mobile IP world, or already have and feel you've missed something, I would highly recommend this book. It is actually an enjoyable read (for those of us who enjoy technical books) and I believe you'll find yourself breezing through so keep a highlighter or some post-it's near by to mark the high points.
In summary; a well written, readable text beneficial for entry level `enquiring minds' but thorough enough to serve as a reference for folks who are already deploying this technology.
Peter L.Review Date: 2005-07-18
The organization of the chapters allows the experienced reader to skip forward to an appropriate chapter. The discussion on the lab configuration is particularly helpful. It saves much of the time we often spend defining the lab environment to be practical and yet reflect enough of the real world to be useful. The evolution to larger, real world class environments is certainly of value. The insight to actual deployment of a solution helps to bring lab data into context. The examples and considerations in the latter part of the book, chapters 5-8, address many of the issues actual deployments may encounter. The ability to address as many of these issues during planning, instead of discovering them during the initial deployment certainly can make enabling a mobile solution less challenging.
Chapter 9 was of specific interest because we have a pending migration to IPv6. Any amount of insight into IPv6 world is of value.
On the negative side, the title is slightly misleading; the "Applications" referred to in the title is the application of mobile IP, vice applications that run over mobile IP. The subtitle is to the point "Real-world solutions for Mobile IP configuration and management."

The book to get for IS-41Review Date: 2000-05-18
The authors give a great background of mobile telecommunications, the making of the IS-41 standard, mobility management, call processing (and most of the important feature procesing), and SMS. Concepts like authentication and mobile roaming are covered quite well.
The basic format of each section remains the same, so it's easy to follow. If you really want the details, like the IS-41 parameters, it's not in this book, but that's when you go to the actual standards document!
Kudos to Michael Gallagher and Randall Snyder for an awesome book!

Excellent Book in Power Electronics and Motor DrivesReview Date: 2002-05-06
Reviewer: Prof. Cong Wang from China Univ. of Mining and Tech., Beijing, China
Prof. Bose, author of the book, is well-known in the world in the field of power electronics, and it is an honor to review his book. The book is a masterpiece contribution in power electronics and drives area. I was teaching his previous book "Power Electronics and AC Drives" (1986) for more than 10 years in my undergraduate and graduate classes. In 1999 our University published the Chinese Version of his another book "Power Electronics and Variable frequency Drives"(1996), I was one of the translators. I was delighted to see this updated, expanded and technologically enhanced book. It will now easily replace his previous book. It is difficult to imagine that anybody else other than Prof. Bose can write such an authoritative book. The writing style is superb, and difficult things have been expressed in clear language.
The book covers almost everything in power electronics and motor drives. It starts with power semiconductor devices, and then covers different classes of converters. The induction and synchronous motor drives (with control and estimation) have been discussed in detail. Finally, the special feature of the book is coverage on artificial intelligence applications in power electronics which have not been treated in any other book on power electronics. There is a separate Problems Manual of the book. I should recommend the book in undergraduate (Senior) and graduate courses in all universities.

Handy Book for Students, Engineers, Enthusiasts, Etc.Review Date: 2003-08-15
The areas that might have been included are, for example: Harmonic filters and their principles and applications in the energy conversion. For example, the hybrid filters, and various topologies of passive, active and hybrid filters as applied to energy converters or motor drives. These are presently heavily focused on by the Power Quality specialists."
For Student or Working EngineerReview Date: 2002-07-17
Unlike many academics, the author appreciates both elegance of approach and practicality of implementation given available technology and devices. Thus, some topologies are included "for completeness", some are described as "widely used" in large-power industrial applications, and yet another might be described as having "an extensive literature" but few or no commercial products, etc. This will be a valuable up-to-the-minute reference for working power electronic engineers as well as students.
Best book for modern power electronics and ac drivesReview Date: 2002-01-16
Power electronics and variable frequency drives are multidisciplinary fields in electrical engineering. Therefore, a book that encompasses such comprehensive knowledge has to be written by an author who has a visionary engineering knowledge. Prof. Bose is a celebrity, he has been investigating and contributing for this field for more than 40 years and have been contributing widely with more than 150 papers, 21 U.S. patents, 6 books, tutorials and keynote addresses throughout the world. His comprehensive understanding of such field is unique; this book is really recommended if you want to learn what is modern power electronics and ac drives!

A Former Cybercrime Victim's OpinionReview Date: 2006-06-05
In general, the new information and new stories were woven amid the 1st edition information so well that there was no way to make any assumptions and skip along through. Just for the heck of it I tried! Then went back and thoroughly read the particular section and found that there was new stuff I'd missed. I did this intentionally a couple times to check. Gave up on the game and just kept reading! New stuff I *really* liked - the chapter on blogs, journals, etc. and the Nigerian Chapter. Even the Afterword was perfect. Just rightly written. Can't explain it other than it seemed to encompass the entirety of the book for you.
One (of many) of my favorite line(s). Intro, page 2, para.4, sentences 1 and 2. Buy the book and find out!
This book is excellent.

A must read for staying safe online!Review Date: 2006-07-13
Once again, the author fills the pages with important and vital information about how to stay safe online. From scammers to hoaxes, stalkers and ebay, even online dating and keeping children safe from online predators, this book is packed with real life examples of how people made mistakes that made them a target for some online psycho. But not only does it have the mistakes that lead to the problem, it has the solutions and tricks to avoid the situation in the first place as well!
Both versions of this book are useful to anyone that surfs online, but I would urge people to get the second edition as it contains updated links and information. Learn to be safe online! Buy this book for yourself and anyone you know who's a newbie to the online world. You never know... it might just save their life.
A MUST HAVE for Moms!Review Date: 2006-05-24
It is estimated that more than sixty percent of children between the ages of 13 and 17 have a Myspace profile, my own children are included in that percentage.
I thought that frequent supervision, placing our computer in the kitchen, and an expensive computer software program would be sufficient to protect my children. I was wrong. With tips from this book, I quickly changed simple computer settings that could ultimately prevent my children, or myself, from becoming a cybercrime victim.
The details that Jayne Hitchcock includes in this book about victim prevention and the procedures to follow if you are victimized, are clear and to the point. A review of cybercrime laws, victim experiences, and the psyche of perpetrator motivation make this type of book, which could be otherwise boring, very interesting!
This book is a MUST HAVE for computer rookies, experts, high school students, and every Mom in America, including mine!

Excellent Security ReferenceReview Date: 2008-10-03
The structure is very good, starting with an overview of security, providing the objectives of it, the reason behind it, the 'Why'. This is followed by the 'How' where it gives clear and concise overviews and explanations of the multitude of technologies complete with configuration examples and good use of diagrams and screenshots. Every chapter has a very helpful list of references for even more information. Advanced topics such as Network Admission Control (NAC), Security Monitoring and Correlation (MARS), and Attack Vectors and Mitigation are covered. Finally the book closes with the business side including security management, explanation of policies, frameworks, governance and the myriad of regulations.
As part of my preparation for the CCIE Security Written exam, I read this book and found it to be invaluable. I highly recommend this book for not just for CCIE preparation but for all levels of readers looking for one of the best books on network security.
An excellent all-around Cisco security reference!Review Date: 2008-07-08
Many authors attempt to cover a wide area of technologies and wind up losing organization of their presentation of the topics. I find Yusuf's organization to be excellent and flowed very well making this an easy read. In fact, considering how many topics this book covers I am amazed at just how well it is organized, which is better than many of the technology-specific books I have read over the years. I become very annoyed with having to go back to reference past topics time and again but I did not find that I had to do that with this book and was able to continue going forward along with the topics.
I also found that this book gets right to the point. Yusuf didn't pack a lot of fluff and filler into the material. Instead you get right into the meat of the topics. Keep in mind that if you are looking for a thorough reference to take you from the very beginning of a specific topic then this book is not for you. This book is part of the "CCIE Professional Development" series and as such assumes you have at least some pre-existing knowledge in these areas. With this in mind, I find this an excellent study guide as well as a real-world reference for various areas of Cisco security.
Perhaps one of the most unique and possibly useful chapters of this book is the non-Cisco material. For example the section covering security policies is invaluable. As a consultant I see client after client without a corporate security policy and in this day and age that's trouble waiting to happen. This section discusses the value of such a policy and how to begin developing it. Another area within this chapter contains information on various regulatory compliance mandates, such as HIPPA and SOX. While this info is readily available elsewhere, Yusuf neatly summarizes the various regulations, including who is mandated to comply, penalties for not doing so and the various Cisco solutions used for compliance.
I found this book to be excellent.
VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!Review Date: 2008-04-23
Bhaiji, begins by introducing you to the principles of network security, security models, a basic overview of security standards, policies, and the network security framework. Then, the author describes the capability to perform traffic filtering using access control lists. The author also covers some of the most common techniques used for device hardening and securing management access for routers, firewall appliances, and the intrusion prevention system appliance. He continues by covering port-level security controls at Layer 2 and security features and best practices available on the switch. Then, the author introduces the software-based IOS firewall features, including the legacy Context-Based Access Control and the newly introduced Zone-Based Policy Firewall feature available on the router. Next, he provides comprehensive coverage of firewall operating systems, software features and capabilities. The author continues by providing mitigation techniques for a wide range of attacks at Layer 2 and Layer 3. Then, he covers details of the authentication, authorization, and accounting framework and implementation of AAA technology. He continues by highlighting the common use of ACS software functions and features. Next, the author introduces common two-factor mechanisms. He also covers the Cisco trust and identity management solution based on the Identity-Based Networking Services technique. Then, the author provides an overview of wireless LAN and details of securing WLAN networks. He continues by showing you how to implement the Cisco NAC appliance solution as well as the NAC-L3-IP, NAC-L2-IP, and NAC-L2-802.1x solutions. Then, the author gives a basic overview of the various cryptographic algorithms, including hash algorithms, symmetric key, and asymmetric key algorithms. Next, he covers a wide range of IPsec VPN solutions. The author continues by showing you how to implement various types of DMVPN hub-and-spoke and spoke-to-spoke solutions. Then, he covers the innovative tunnel-less VPN approach to provide data security. He also covers the newly introduced Cisco AnyConnect VPN. Next, the author shows you how to implement Layer 2 and Layer 3-based MPLS VPN solutions. Finally, he covers regulatory compliance and legislative acts including GLBA, HIPAA and SOX.
This most excellent book serves as a valuable resource for candidates preparing for the CCIE Security certification exam that covers topics from the new blueprints. Perhaps more importantly, this great book serves as reference for any networking professional managing or considering exploring and implementing Cisco network security solutions and technologies.
Great Reference for Security technology!!Review Date: 2008-04-24
Overall book is divided into five parts, and information is presented in a manner that it serves both novice and advanced readers.
a few things can be improved in a later edition, e.g.., a)allocation of breadths to the newer areas (more on zone-based FW than CBAC) and b) less repetitiveness around the subject matter (ie, overlap with other cisco titles).
All in all, a great title and highly recommended for network security professional at all levels!
All-In-One Cisco Security GuideReview Date: 2008-04-19
Unlike many security discussions that make much of vulnerabilites that are highly unlikely or virtually impossible to pull off, the author clearly states when an attack is improbable, and not worth the effort to consider.
The second unit of the book focuses on identity and access management. I found the sections on layer 2 access control most useful. Particularly the use of 802.1x protocol with a RADIUS server. Something I am currently trying to implement in a network.
Part 3 is all about privacy and encryption and covers many ways to tunnel, hide, and encrypt data packets. The last sections are about Intrusion Detection and Security Management.
Perhaps one of the most helpful setions in the book are the guidelines for establishing a security policy and making it work in a real world environment. Chapter 25 walks you through starting with a security model that gives you a foundation for fleshing out your companies standards, guidelines and procedures so you will be ready for your next audit as well as the real security threats of today.

Excellent book to penetrate the affluent marketReview Date: 2004-01-16
This book will create relationships that many have heretofore, been unable to penetrate.
Great book by Dr. Stanley.
Especially good for people in financial servicesReview Date: 2004-01-16
In Networking with the Affluent, Dr. Stanley shows how to get into this market and offer quality financial products and services. To serve the affluent and others in their network.
You won't find any tricky techniques. But you will find some powerful ideas on how to substantially increase your production.
I have recommended this book to dozens of people over the years. And I can tell by their productivity if they have actually read it.
Get this book. It's great.

Some good advice on how to be useful to the affluentReview Date: 2002-07-18
Stanley writes: "...always remember that you will succeed in marketing if you focus on the needs of your targets." What are the needs of the affluent? Stanley focuses upon eight valuable services that individuals can provide to the affluent.
According to Stanley, the "Eight Faces of Networking" are:
* Being
A Talent Scout
* Being A Revenue Enhancer
* Being An Advocate (to your clients' industries)
* Being A Mentor
*
Being A Publicist
* Being A Family Advisor
* Being A Purchasing Agent
* Being A Loan Broker
Noticeably missing from Stanley's list is walking poodles. What sort of pets do the rich have anyway? Are they largely cat people or dog people? Or do they tend to avoid pets altogether due to the cost of caring for the furry little fellows? Stanley is silent on the issue.
But, I guess offering to walk a potential client's poodle wouldn't enhance the image of a serious business professional anyway. So, we'll let Stanley off the hook on this point of omission. Each of his other networking suggestions would tend to enhance a businessperson's reputation as a savvy businessperson with the client.
Being a talent scout means providing your network with information about reliable suppliers and people who might be able to provide valuable services. For example, Stanley notes that the majority of the wealthy are business owners, so they are constantly looking for sources of supply for their businesses.
Suppose the fat cat you want to do business with owns a bakery chain. If you've focused your attention upon the food industry, you might just know a good supplier of doilies. That information will come in handy when fat cat laments the lack of reliable doily suppliers. By asking fat cat about his most important goals and concerns, you learn how you can be of service to him.
Of course, if the doily supplier delivers deformed doilies, you might lose the goodwill of the fat cat. Stanley tells us to only endorse people who provide quality services and products, otherwise we compromise the value of our personal network.
Stanley says that it's often wisest to focus upon networking within a few industries because positive word-of-mouth flows more rapidly through inter-industry communication than through intra-industry communication. We learn that one of the best places to learn about an industry are the industry's trade publications and associations.
So, while you're browsing through "Gingersnap Today," in addition to learning about the industry, you'll learn about the movers and shakers of the baking industry. More people to add to your potential food network.
What do most bakers really care about? In fact, what do most wealthy people care about? Dough, of course! Business owners, especially, are always looking to grow their revenue. So, if you enhance a business owner's revenue, you will become a valuable member of his or her network.
Would doily supplier dare drop doing business with you in favor of your competition if you are providing many referrals and enhancing his doily revenue? Especially, if other people providing the same core service don't enhance his revenue at all?
Stanley gives us the example of a financial advisor who was talking with the wealthy owner of a welding company. Rather than focusing upon the financial advisor's "me, me, me" interest of getting as much money under his grubby management paw as possible, the advisor focused upon his potential client's real concerns and priorities.
Upon meeting the wealthy welder, the financial advisor immediately said that he had several clients who owned oil rigs which needed welding services. He put the welder in contact with the oil riggers. The welder received much business and opened a multimillion dollar account with the financial advisor.
Of course, savvy networking is sometimes derogatorily referred to as "The Old Boy's Network," where members only tend to do business with other members. But, everyone has the opportunity to create their own network. Building networks is an equal opportunity endeavor. Unfortunately, sometimes, people have network envy.
Also, notice that financial advisors and others offering core services to the wealthy tend to benefit most from such networking. This is especially true if the basic service provided is largely undifferentiated, as it typically is with accounting services or financial advising, for example.
Stanley argues that the core service provided clients must be worthwhile to secure and retain business. But, core services being equal, the provider who excels at revenue enhancement will probably win.
While revenue enhancement is crucial, maybe, top dog's greatest concern is building his new home. He's a successful doctor who hates negotiating and doesn't have the time for it. But, it so happens that you know the building contracting business and are a strong negotiator. By acting as a purchasing agent for members of your network, you can save members money. And, as they say, a penny saved is a penny earned.
Stanley relates the story of a successful CPA who saved his wealthy client about [money] on the purchase of a new home. When the successful doctor told Mr. CPA about his new home plans along with its 15% builder's fee and extra fees and commissions here and there, Mr. CPA offered to negotiate the final purchase on behalf of his client. Knowing construction, Mr. CPA knew that a 10% builder's fee was fair. But, the commission, paid to the builder, on the sale of the lot, owned by the builder, had to go.
Saving members of your network money on expensive purchases is one more way to benefit them.
Overall, if you provide a service to wealthy individuals and you wish to increase the value of your networking skills, you might find this book useful.

First, the model. CARPETS is Hogan's anacronym for Case Analysis, Regression, Parts/Ego State, Time Track Therapy and Suggestive Therapeutics. The highlight of the model is the Time Track Component. Never have I seen such a beautiful piece of work in the field of hypnosis. What you learn is how to weave a clients past and future positive resources into their present day state of mind. This modality alone is worth the ... price of the book.
The discussion of ethical issues, case analysis and legal issues is first rate. The details of regression are sketchy at first but made clear later in the book when his co-authors give verbatim transcripts of their session work. The ego state therapy is better described in Ego States by Watkins, but the treatment is sufficient. The specialty chapters on Emergency Hypnosis, Past Life Regression and even UFO abductions are tantalizing and always prefaced with cautions of ethical use and careful handling of the client.
This book started off a bit clumsily and then by Chapter Two it was clear it was one of the finest books on hypnosis I have read.
The New Hypnotherapy Handbook is a wonderful book for the advanced beginner and the seasoned practitioner.
