I pass ccna2.0 with 935/1000 today. All I have is this book and Boson exams. I've read my friend's Todd Lammle book. I think this book is much better than Todd's. Todd's is written for passing the exam. For the ICND book, you actally learn the CCNA stuff in depth. I strongely recommend this book for everyone who want to pass the CCNA2.0 with FULLY understanding.

I read ICND by Cisco Press before. I found this book used on Amazon and bought it just because it was cheap. Now I can not put it down. This book is far better than Cisco Press' ICND. It has about 100 more pages than Cisco's. To me it is worth every minute spent to read this book.
I passed CCNA in December. So, I don't have the exam pressure. I am reading this just for fun and enjoying it.
I strongly recommend it over Cisco's ICND if you intent to take CCNA test.

I just finished reading this book cover to cover and feel very confident about moving on to the next stage of my CCNA preparation, practice tests and simulation! I've been using the CCExam software from CCStudy.com as well as a few other practice tests and am amazed how easy a lot of the questions were after reading this book. Just an indication of how comprehensive this book is.

More important, in my opinion, is the book's "readability"! I'm sure there are numerous books that cover the exact same information as this book yet might not be written in a manner that is clear and simple to understand, especially for Cisco newbies like myself. This book is just a lot of fun to read.

Finally, I really enjoyed the "real world" tone of this title. It isn't written for someone who's bound for the testing center, but rather for someone who needs to apply the knowledge at work in the field. I'm certain that I'll constantly be using this book as a reference even after passing the exam. Very cool.

All in all, I'd like to recommend ICND to the Cisco neophyte who's looking for that great "First Book" to start off his or her Cisco library. I'm really glad I got this book and I'm sure you will be too.

Good luck on your CCNA!

The information in this book is top notch reference material for engineers who work in power plants. I use the book almost daily at my power plant everything is useful to me. The only reason I didn't put five stars is that the book was issued with the cover on upside down.

A Unique Handbook

Review Date: 2002-06-20
Extract from a review by Bhaskar Sinha, Dy. G. M. (Engg.), BHEL,
published in Beacon, house journal of IEEE Delhi Section, Vol.21,No.1, (June 2002)

The release of a new title by the renowned technical publishing house of Newnes / Butterworth-Heinemann is usually a noteworthy event for the technical fraternity. The title under review has come as a surprise, not only because it far exceeds the standard usually set for handbooks but also because it has achieved the unique distinction of being a reference work equally useful and valuable for industry professionals, practising engineers, consultants, technicians, students, teachers, research scholars and all others professionally interested in industrial power systems.

By virtue of their diversity, complexity and size, industrial power systems throw a formidable challenge to the electrical engineer. Standard electrical engineer's handbooks do not address the requirements of this special field completely. For the large number of day-to-day problems faced by production, operation and maintenance engineers working in industries there are few dedicated reference books to fall back upon for guidance. The ones that are available also do not cover the ground adequately. The present work is perhaps the most complete industrial power systems handbook currently available.

This is a reference for all engineers in design and application, protection and testing, production, project engineering, project implementation and maintenance. The text is structured into five parts. The essential theory of each topic is covered first, followed by industrial practice information. The idea is that detailed theory can always be gleaned from textbooks. Agrawal knows where exactly he must draw the line between theory and application engineering.

Mr. Agrawal has effectively bridged the gap between theory and practice in his book. Clear application data and guidelines, manufacturer's practices, application practices, commercially available ratings of machines, selection, operation and maintenance of equipment and plant, troubleshooting - all are covered in every conceivable detail. The material is cleverly keyed in to the recommendations of international standards organisations like ISO, IEEE, ANSI, BSI, DIN, IEC, etc.

One detailed flip-through leaves you convinced of the publisher's claim that "never before has so much ground been covered in a single volume reference source". Apart from doing yeomen's service to practising engineers, the author has done a great favour to teachers at technical institutes who have limited access to information from the Industry. Students will now not be deprived of this kind of information since teachers can always refer this excellent handbook to reply to questions raised in the classroom.

The production values of the book are excellent. Each page is lavishly illustrated with high quality drawings, graphs and photographs. The overall structuring of the book is excellent.

There is no capsule biography of the author anywhere in the book. For most readers Agrawal will remain only a name.

At the end of it all, the book emerges as a landmark achievement in its field. When you put it down, you cannot help wishing there were separate handbooks of identical character in the areas of transmission, distribution and utilization too.

This book has definitely provided me a solid background in H323.
In addition, it is a very useful reference, for example, I was
able to follow the call setup and media setup packet flow of an IP phone captured via a protocol analyzer(ethereal), thanks to the very clear illustrations. This is definitely a must for network administrators/managers considering a multimedia network implementation.

This book stands head and shoulders above other h323 and voip books. I know, I have 3 others that are gathering dust on the bookshelf. But this one, I have dogeared, marked, highlighted significant number of pages. It has the most detailed examples, explanations and illustrations that offer real-world implementation of h.323, h.245, h.225 and rtp, codecs, and other associated topics involved in voip. This is a must have, the other books are, well, junk.

Well-written book that clearly explains a complex subject

Review Date: 2001-07-16
This book provides a highly-technical in-depth look at H.323. Aside from reading a few whitepapers on the Internet, this book was my first real introduction to H.323. The subject itself is rather complicated to a new-comer, but this book provided a high level of detail without losing the reader. While it is no "for dummies" book, it is clearly written so the person with the right background (i.e. with a firm grasp on networking and TCP/IP) can pick it up and follow along. So why 4 stars and not 5? It realy has to do with the architectural graphics. In some of the information on the Internet ... , there are some really good architectural graphics that depict H.323. I think the book could be even better if the authors included such an approach.

This is by far the most comprehensive book on the market. I agree with the previous review, IP Telephony with H.323 is for advanced uses and a great reference guide as well. I highly recommend it if you want a thorough understand H.323 and IP Telephony, however, if you wish to learn about a particular subject, for example QoS or MPLS, this book will not provide enough detailed information (check out Cisco Press).

Bold statement, I know, but in my opinion Jeff has done what many have not been able to do in the past; develop a guide that is both easy to follow and very complete. I would not hesitate to recommend this guide to my IT guys as well as someone looking to learn about Wi-Fi that may not even know where to start. Both would find this guide book the most valuable book on their shelf.

One of the most comprehensive guides I've found to date. Easy to follow with excellent detail, offering explanations for various methods. A bright light for Wi-Fi instruction, it's an extraordinary volume. Both the novice and expert alike, would certainly find benefit from it well structured format.

Very Useful Book

Jeff has put together a extremely useful guide to wireless networking. It is well organized, allowing quick access to specific topics, and broad enough to cover most relevant issues for smaller (and maybe some medium sized) networks. He wisely discusses that which is truly important, avoiding complexity when it is not needed.
There is a considerable amount of practical advice, product information and helpful hints regarding installation, setup and security.
This is not likely very usable for a novice, but would be helpful for anyone who has at minimum a basic understanding of networks.

It's a toss-up for me between this book and O'Rielly's "Wi-Fi Hacks" book. Both books have up-to-date, well written content. The Hacks books is organized more aggressively into a set form that may or may not appeal to you. This book has a more traditional topic based organization.

Topics include antenna coverage and construction, operating system information and coverage of the different types of Wi-Fi security that are available.

I recommend this book for anyone serious about building their own Wi-Fi networks. I don't recommend this book, or O'Reilly Hacks, for someone just looking for how to get their computer on a wireless network. For that I would recommend a book specific to their operating system.

As a Microsoft Instructor, I recommend this book to all of my students. It cuts through the fluff and crud that Microsoft usually tacks on to the courses and gets to the meat and potatoes of what Active Directory is all about. Several students have used this besides my class and have blown the test away. Check out the author's exam tips to save yourself some headaches.

The author did an wonderful job helping me understand the complex features of Active Directory like group policies and remote install services. Which by the way are hit hard on the exam. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Roger Fournier's book. I am a voracious reader with many books on Client-Server, Web technology, systems development, etc.; however, Mr. Fournier's methodology is a welcome addition to my library. This may be the most practical book that I have seen for systematically approaching the development of complex systems. I plan on incorporating much of his methodology and ideas in my future projects. I would recommend it for anyone interested in learning about client-server or web technology and it is a great reference for professionals involved in project development (both large and small).

I am encouraged by the books honesty in stressing that building large systems is hard work. Too often the literature touts "sure-fire" success if you follow a particular "cook book" sequence or employ specific technology. As anyone in the business knows, good preparation, realistic goals, teamwork and attention to detail are more important than choosing the latest "hot" technology. The book walks through the stages of a projects life cycle and provides much "food for thought" in how to get each stage right. But it never deceives one into thinking the process is easy and it never implies that the proposed methods are the only logical approach to take.

Although the title focuses on C/S and Web Application development, the methodology presented has a much broader application. It provides an excellent framework for development of any complex system. The book is well written. It provides broad coverage from requirements discovery through project deployment. The book contains so much information that the reader may want to focus on specific areas of high personal interest at first- such as Web architecture or systems analysis. Fortunately, Mr. Fournier's style is such that you can concentrate on the chapters that are most relevant to your needs first and later read the other sections without a significant loss of continuity.

As an Enterprise Architect, I have found the book very helpful. It contains useful information for project managers, enterprise and system architects, analysts, developers and test engineers. Without going into details I'll say that the tables, checklists and web-references presented throughout the book have been very useful.

I believe the survey, analysis and joint facilitated session chapters are well presented and offer a lot of information on project definition and scoping. They certainly make clear the importance of up-front planning to a projects success. For my purposes, the C/S and Web Architecture chapter was of high interest and was well presented. I was glad to see a chapter devoted to software re-use. However, I would like to see this chapter expanded to include more information on infrastructure, middleware and components. I would recommend anyone interested in the book to quickly scan the table of contents to see the wide range of information that can be found.

Mr. Fournier mentions that there might be a follow-up book focusing on the project management aspects of building complex systems. I sincerely hope he writes this.

Thomas Bleier and Eric Steinert have brought together in net.people the people, the content, and the work that has gone into a sampling of Websites representative of average people like you and me. The book profiles the lives of men and women who offer a variety of informational services that include budget living, comic books, electronic gaming, horse riding, humor, medical advice, misheard song lyrics, B-movies, movie reviews, software reviews, sports, unusual tourist attractions, writer resources, Website reviews, and even celebrity grave sites - honest!

Readers will learn how the ideas of these people were turned into successful Websites and about the amount of time, labor, expense, and strategies involved in launching them. How did they design their Websites? How did they find financing for their sites? How do they draw increased traffic to them? What were the successes and failures they experienced? How have their lives been changed? The answers to these and other questions are here for all to read and learn from.

Just who are these people? They are people just like you and me. They have real interest in sharing certain information with others for fun, and in some cases, for profit of one kind or another. They have knowledge, skill, talent, ideas, and opinions just like anyone else. What makes them different is they have gone online with their offerings. They have experienced the good times and the bad. Readers may be able to identify with them as they read this highly personal and revealing book.

This book will inspire readers to take their own thoughts and ideas online as well. It will help them to further develop their own ideas, to design their own Websites, and come up with their own marketing strategies. It's highly recommended reading for anyone wanting to go online. Readers will have fewer excuses not to do so after reading this book!

I'm working in Information Security, and I was looking for a good security book, fortunately my decision was the best. This book is very complete and not only explain the concepts of network security but Information Security in the general context. The topics are technical as well as administrative. Explain how the security should be implemented and assessed or audited. I really improved my knowledge and my productivity in my job.

Book is excellent. Covers the theory very well, such that you can make the computer code yourself. They also provide puedocode. You will be able to learn it better than other books that just give you the code. I find that once you understand the theory, writing the code is easy.

Saves you months of information gathering

Everybody who tries to use NNets for real goes through these steps.
First, there is the Delta rule.
Then, there is overfitting, local minima, generalization problems and frustration.

The complexity of NN is not in it's math; the difficulty is in the construction of a NN. This book is excellent in providing rules-of-thumb for NN construction, while at the same time providing the theoretical backing.

Hey I am not making money reviewing this book, it's just really good.

Many textbooks can help me to understand the different concepts of neural network, but not the practical tips needed to optimize neural network anlysis and implementation.

The topics covered are reminicent to those discussed in part 2 and 3 of the Neural Network FAQ. In chapter 6, the relationships between learning rate, momontum, trainig time and learning modes are presented graphically. With this, it helps me to rule out and avoid learning parameters that are unlikely to improve the NN performance. This is especially important if the dataset is large and the NN program is implemented in Java.

If the aim is to develop a NN solution that will give you the best results, I find both chapter 7 (heuristics for weights initialization) and 16 (heuristics for improving generation) are esential and saves me a lot of time from reading many journals.

In summary, this book has helped me to develop the art of NN optimization. It shows me how to visualize decision surface and the various graphical relationships between learning paramters and various components of NN topology. I think you will find this book very useful after your NN program is up and running and you are looking for ideas and explaination on how to improve the NN performance further.

After owning this book for many years and reaching for it many times, I decided that I at least owed the book a five star review.

Early in my graduate career I began working with neural networks and discovered this book in a electronic bookshelf available at my university. After printing chapter after chapter to read on subway rides home I ended up buying it for convenience. It gave me the background I needed to code up a basic artificial neural network in C++ and to then extend it to fit my needs.

The style of the writing is the perfect balance of enough detail to understand a concept or method without unnecessary wordiness. Each chapter covers an important aspect of neural network development and application - for exmaple, internode weight initilaization techniques - and acts a sort of mini-review of the most popular methods with a clear explanation of the pros and cons of each.

This is an excellent bookshelf addition for anyone who works with neural networks.

A real gem of a book

Some books just have the right feel about them and this is one of them. The author clearly knows neural networks and also knows how to communicate to others in a no-nonsense fashion. With so many books being published, you rarely find a technical book that is as good as this. The emphasis here is on conveying the insights that the experts in this area would know. Importantly, concepts are explained equally in words, graphics and mathematics, maximising the uptake of knowledge from the book. Tufte would be impressed by the quality of the line graphics in this book, and the information that they convey, not to mention the overall presentation. I suspect that this book would make an ideal textbook for a course in neural networks. Overall, I've enjoyed reading it very much.
