First chapter the best and very worth reading

The reviews of this book I feel are a touch overrated. The premise of this book is great and, truth be told, the first chapter is absolutely terrific and has altered how i strive to communicate with my spouse. With each succeeding chapter however I found the anecdotes used to illustrate the book's points to be more and more glib and poorly illustrative. The final chapter which discusses Freedom and Intimacy I unfortunately felt sold the idea of marriage pretty short. The anecdotes used to illustrate their ideas in this final chapter I found either a) did not prove their point well or b) were hard to believe and disturbing in their degree of self absorbed behavior (i.e. kyle and susan--- which I can only hope were not being held up as models of behavior we should be striving for). Improving the illustrative anecdotes in this book would better serve the underlying themes the author is trying to promote which are very valuable.

Oral Sex: the gift that keeps on giving

"I love this book...from the provocative title to the repeated use of double entendre it is inspired...catchy, surprising, easy reading, funny and right on. Take it from someone who was married for a long time, this is a much needed resource for everyone looking for an authentic relationship and satisfying sex.

Most men I meet labor under the illusion that they are terrific lovers and are actually clueless! They rarely ask significant sexual questions and don't seem to know how to really listen. If they're curious at all, it generally has to do with a veiled (or not-so-veiled) request for reassurance about their sexual performance. As they get older this becomes even more of an issue for them.

I'm so weary/wary of men who are insecure about their sexual adequacy. Most of the women I know - and we talk openly about this - don't care much about sexual performance. What they care about in a man is warmth, humor, acceptance, curiosity, caring, and connection. All of which requires him being comfortable in his own skin (including his foreskin).

Believe me, giving him Oral Sex will be the gift that keeps on giving both for you and for him.

Author Jordan Paul was my therapist years ago. From him I learned that communication is the way to achieve peace of any kind. That means talking AND listening. This book reinforces this belief in a simple, clear and enjoyable way. You'll have so much fun reading it, you won't realize how much you're learning!

Sincere, thought provoking, and really, really funny...

I came across this book through a friend and it seems like it was really a godsend. Things with my husband had changed so much from when we had first married. So when my friend handed me a copy of "Oral Sex" and told me that she thought it would help us get back on track, I thought I was going to read a book that would tell me all we had to do was have more sex. Instead, the book taught me how to open up and talk to my husband about what I was everything I was feeling. While it took a lot of practice, my husband and I are talking now like we never did before. More than anything we're having more fun than I can ever remember having. I really applaud Dr. Paul and Dr. Freshman for creating the sort of workbook that should be handed to all couples after they walk down the aisle!

Do I like Oral Sex? I LOVE it, and you will too!

Do I like Oral Sex, you asked. "Well," blushingly I answer, "of course I do, and this book is incredible, too! "

We are beings of mind, body, and spirit, and our most rewarding relating comes when all three are in harmony, flowing lovingly through open hearts. There are so very many books about sex that deal only with the body, or with the body and mind. There are tantric volumes that deal with the spirit and the body. "Oral Sex" fills the gap, weaving body, mind and spirit together, creating a tapestry of opportunity where open hearted comunication about the most intimate physical loving can grow into a deeper spiritual and emotional bond betwen lovers.

Whether you are starting a brand new relationship or hoping to enrich or reviatlize a relationship that has already weathered a few storms, embracing open hearted communication about sex will create a loving and intimate environment where both partners can grow and blossom.

Oral Sex is the perfect foreplay, to bring your loving to new heights of intimacy, honesty, and love. And isn't that what we all long for, after all.

YES!YES!YES! (I'll have what she's having.)

I bought this book used hoping it would be a good addition to my reference libary. It did not cover the topics I was expecting. The first half of the text covered basic LAN technology, WAN technology and protocols. The remaning chapters went over a basic configuration of a cisco router right out of the box. Going only slighty more in depth than what can be done with the set-up help dialogue when you first power up.
I am not at all saying this is not a good book, but it is aimed at someone with very little to no basic networking knowledge, and who has never seen a cisco router before. If you fit that description this will make a good read for you.

I do agree that this is the best introduction book for Cisco beginners. It gives you from all the basic things you need to know about networking concepts and then explain the features of the routers and how to configure it.

I would recommend this books to my friends. Well the price itself is affordable :)

Simple yet thorough.

On my desk I had:

IP Routing Primer - doesn't make good bed-time reading ;-)

Cisco Routers Black Book - very nicely written, but a bit too detailed for a quick job.

Those were given by my employer.

Practical Cisco Routers - thin and easy to read. Uses extensive examples to show you exactly how things work.

That one is a personal copy.

I only had to refer to my Practical book in order to setup the router and tell someone to set up the other end of the system.

This book will not tell you the intricacies of EIGRP or explain what the output of sh tech means, but you will be up and running in no time. I only had to read one chapter to get everything configured and integrated into my main global network.

Do yourself a favor and read it thoroughly before starting a configuration using a GUI tool. There is a lot more you need to know than you might believe otherwise.

So just how much do I like this book? I am not willing to sell it!

While I wouldn't recommend this book to beginning programmers, it's great for people who already know another language (preferably C/C++) and a little about object-oriented programming. It touches on many subjects, so you won't need a whole bookshelf of Java books ("Let's see...one for language reference...one for graphics and the AWT...one for networking..."). I take this book back and forth every day between work and home. What would I do without it?

Fantastic book. Pithy style, very readable, no fluff, excellent as a reference. Anyone coming to Java from C++ should get this book. About the only thing I would do to improve it would be to have at least a short chapter on database access.

Even though this is one of my oldest Java books I keep going back to it. I wish it would be updated for the new Event model and swing however. The coverage of the 1.0 JDK is very good and I still go back to the gridbag description and examples when I get confused.

OK. What more do you need to know? This book is written by three gentlemen who live, eat and breathe computer incident response & forensics. The fact that they present the information in a well written and easy to follow format is just a bonus! If you're one of those "I wanna do it" types like me, you'll read through the material and then tackle the provided data to see if you can solve the crime. A great starting point for future incident responders and folks who want to know more about computer forensics.

As an author and instructor, I tend to be pretty picky about the books I choose to read and use in my classes. The authors present the material in a good logical progression. I especially like that it also provides sample evidence on the DVD. Most of the computer forensic books that currently exist contain mostly theory. This is the first good hands-on text that I have seen.

The authors have captured a good cross section of scenarios and then guide you through each case in-depth, offering practical solutions when faced with obstacles. The content provides methodologies, techniques, and tools that anyone can use. In addition it covers a variety of media such as USB memory and Palm devices.

This is a book that I will definitely keep. It is one of the best forensic investigations books currently on the market and would be a great asset to anyone wishing to enhance their skills.

This book is written in such a style that is easy to understand, yet technical and detailed enough to maintain your interest and attention all the way through.

The book presents several ways of accomplishing the same tasks in a non-biased, non-vendor-specific way. It explores the use of free, open-source tools as well as commercial offerings, and drills down into forensic analysis of both Windows and Unix/Linux Operating Systems.

The included CD contains actual forensic data and a few tools, which is both interesting and exciting to use while following along with the lessons in the book.

After receiving this book and opening it to the first page, I was almost unable to set it down until I finished it. I received it on a Friday afternoon and I had completed reading it by the end of the weekend. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in Computer or Network Security.

This encyclopedia is a leading resource written by leading philosophers and scholars. It is indispensible for researchers and students who need to refer to a philosophical topic or a great thinker and their thought. It is also good for the casual reader who may be interested in philosophy and wishes to learn more about the subject.

The encyclopedia is very comprehensive and covers all the main areas of philosophy as well as both Eastern and Western philosophy. Jewish and Islamic and African Philosophies are also well represented. There are many biographies of leading philosophers, as well as scientists, theologians, lawyers, writers and politicians who have covered philosophical questions.

The price puts this resource beyond the means of most individual buyers, but all good libraries should stock it.

It is the best encyclopedia of philosophy available in English,
and as comprehensive as one could reasonably want on the
Anglo-American analytic tradition. However, it is still inferior
to the magisterial Historisches Woerterbuch der Philosophie, ed.
Joachim Ritter (12 vols., of which 11 have thus far been
published) - the one true indispensable philosophical reference
work.

We bought this encyclopedia set to the Royal School of Library and Information Science in Copenhagen (both the 10 vol. hardbound and the cd-rom version). I simply find it indispensable and so do many of my colleagues and students. My experience is that this effect comes from the first glance in this work. We are not using this work as professional philosophers but as library and information scientists who needs a broad orientation about fundamental problems related to knowledge, its production, dissemination and use. In my opinion there is a general trend in many of the social sciences towards more theoretical and philosophical foundations. In this process it is extremely important that you have works that bring concise introductions to various traditions in thinking and scientific methodology. The importance of this work is in my view, that it allows researchers and students in social sciences and other fields to have a central reference point when we put forward our arguments.

This work is useful along several dimensions. In this review I shall only mention epistemology and the philosophy of science. We have in all the sciences (especially in the social sciences, psychology, media and information sciences) many approaches or "paradigms", for example: (social) constructivism, critical realism, empiricism, feminist epistemology, hermeneutics, historicism, paradigm theory (Thomas Kuhn), Marxist philosophy of science, critical rationalism (Karl Popper), positivism and logical positivism, postmodernism and poststructuralism, pragmatism, rationalism, and realism (with scientific realism and antirealism). One simply need to be informed about the basic principles behind such approaches, and the Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy is the only place where you can get a reasonable detailed and comprehensive overview. Add to this that every article starts with a summary, and ends with references and reading lists (often annotated). This is simply a very user friendly design. Of course no work can answer all questions, and of course serious students need much more than this (and of course a few articles is a little disappointing). This work is, however, an important tool, that in my view cannot be overestimated. Its real importance is, I think, that it can strengthen the theoretical approaches in many sciences because it provides us with a common overview and reference point. When I am introducing or discussing Library and Information Science, I am trying to connect the different approaches or paradigms in this field to basic philosophical questions (se my article "Library and information science: practice, theory, and philosophical basis in the journal Information Processing and Management, vol. 36(3), 2000, pp. 501-531). In this way I hope to be able to contribute to the development of this field. In my opinion all other fields should benefit in a similar way. Why is philosophy important for most fields? Because the empiricist and positivist view is simply wrong. You cannot produce knowledge from observations alone. You simply have to consider many theoretical issues which have been clarified through accumulated experiences.

This collection, especially the CD-ROM version is a very useful resource. It is easy to use and very consice, full of information. This encyclopedic collection contains all themes in philosophy and some in religion, which makes it useful when someone is trying to make connections to other fields. Individual philosophers and a general overview of their life works and projects, different idealogies and terms are all explained in full extent in this simple to use encyclopedia.

It is so exciting to be able to use this resource. It is a recent acquisition at the college's library, and since I have discovered it I haven't been able to put it down. I give it 5 stars, and although I haven't read it entirely (for obvious reasons), I think it will be a resource I will be using for the rest of my life.

This book is an excellent application of formal methodologies for e-business cases. The examples are useful according to the explanations. I was expecting more emphasis on cost of IT resources or methods in order to calculate. But, the authors guide the book in the resource and performance chapters showing an approach on how to measure from regular sites not from new e-business projects which begin from nothing, without any data from logs or similar metrics. However, the estrict compliance with the methodology presented and the explanation about security provided me with a good reason to have it.

Excellent performance &n capacity approach for app layer
Helpful Votes: 23 out of 24 total.
Review Date: 2002-07-20
This is one of a series of books about performance and capacity metrics by the authors. Each of their books covers a specific environment (client/server, mainframes, web services), and each explains the theory, quantitative methods and practical approaches using common tools like Microsoft Excel.

This book's focus is on performance and capacity of applications in the e-commerce infrastructure, and like the other books by the authors, it covers every facet while explaining the what's and why's. More importantly, this book will not overwhelm readers who are rusty in math because the authors weave in refresher material as they go along.

What makes this book valuable is the blend of business and technical topics, particularly in Part I where business models are thoroughly discussed. I personally believe that this material is as important as the more technically focused material in subsequent chapters because it wakes up the technical reader as to why their job of developing scalable solutions is important by linking the technical aspects to business imperatives.

Parts II (Evaluating E-Business Infrastructure and Services) and III (Capacity Planning for E-Business) are the heart of the technical matter, and the chapters systematically dissect each aspect of an e-commerce infrastructure from the application layer point of view. This is where quantitative methods are introduced and where the value of the spreadsheets on the CD ROM increase. Note that there are more up-to-date versions of these spreadsheets on the book's associated website, as well as errata for the book.

Practical considerations that blend the business and technical perspectives are presented in Part IV (Models of Specific E-Business Segments). This chapter consists of case studies that tie together all of the preceding material using real world examples.

Because this book is more focused on performance and capacity at the application and business model layer, you should read the authors' newest book, "Capacity Planning for Web Services: Metrics, Models, and Methods". That book covers the lower level details of the infrastructure
to round out the picture of an end-to-end view of performance and capacity management.

Going to an engineering school, we deal strickly with SI units. For the most part the book deals with them too. But often, it seems like the problems that would be good for me to try, are in inchs and mils and lbs and all the imperical crap.

Now i only gave it 1 star less. Considering most of the engineering world laughs at imperical crap, which i dont blame them.

Besides for that, the rest of the book is pretty good. The lack of explanations could be worked on. (not in the problems, but in the information prior to the questions). I luckily took a physics on electricity before i got this. Which helped me alot, especially when dealing with OhmMeters.

I would by this book if you want to great in your EE classes. But you may want to have someone who can explain some things. Or just do some demensional analysis to figure out why things are the way they are. And resistance and others like that will make sense.

I initially picked up this book to do remediation on my first circuit analysis course, and have continued to use it through the second course. I call the Shaum Series my "secret weapon" for doing well in EE classes (and physics too, actually). The few pages of exposition at the beginning of each chapter are clear, concise, and mostly complete (Electric Circuits by Nahvi is more rigorous), and the problems, half with detailed solutions and half with just answers, are on-topic, perfectly-tailored, and numerous.

If you are taking circuit analysis courses, EE or not, you would be a fool to not have this book in your bag.

Excellent supplement on the topic of circuit analysis

Review Date: 2006-06-02
This is an excellent supplement for electrical technology and electrical engineering students taking a first course on circuit analysis. It is a particularly good companion to Boylestad's "Introductory Circuit Analysis", which is a standard circuit analysis text that has insufficient examples on several subjects. This outline starts with the analysis of DC resistive circuits, goes on to AC circuits, and also covers power circuits, transformers, and op-amps. There is a good chapter on complex numbers and phasors, an understanding of which is essential for the study of circuit analysis. There is no need of differential or integral calculus although the book uses derivatives in the chapters on capicitors, inductors, and transformers as needed for voltage-current relations. Even though there is not one integral shown in the book, the outline is still useful to engineers since circuit analysis courses mainly use only algebra.
This book also presents necessary tools such as PSPICE, the computer circuit analysis and simulation program for PC's. SPICE is the standard for analog circuit simulation across the electronics industry, and knowledge of its syntax is essential. The outline also covers the use of advanced scientific calculators in the context of solving actual problems.
Besides being a good source of examples and solved problems, this outline does a pretty good job of outlining the basic theory of circuit analysis. I highly recommend it.

"A Scrapbook for Sandy" was sent to me by a dear friend who lives far away, who I don't see very often but with whom I shall always have a very close bond. I received the book after a long days' journey, too full of too many different airplanes and airports. Just as I was thinking how exhausted I was to be back in New York, I saw this large package on my desk, awaiting my return. Upon opening it, I sat for at least two hours reading and laughing, smiling and thinking, completely unaware of tasks in front of me and the exhausting trip behind me. What warmth and inspiration! What a passion for loving and living the book contains! For any of those most dear, I recommend sending a copy of Cecile Mactaggart's "A Scrapbook for Sandy" right away! They will cherish it for years to come and they will return to it often for sustenance, solace and delight!

This is a great book. I rarely give a book 5 stars, but this one has earned it.

The author's technical and standards body background is a tremendous help in helping the reader sort out the substance from the hype. This book covers XML and cryptography basics, DTDs, XML Schema, XML digital signatures and encryption, and SOAP.

I like the author's comparisons of XML with other encoding schemes, particularly ASN.1 DER which is prevalent in the security standards world.

Also helpful are the author's "soapbox" comments, which handily dispel the notion that you should accept all parts of a standard as the absolute truth and the final word. For example, "X.500 identities are baroque hierarchical names in which each level of the hierarchy consists of an arbitrary, unordered set of attribute-value pairs. They are just one of the complexities and false assumptions (such as the assumption that everyone would allow themselves to be listed in one global public directory, including companies listing all their employees) that doomed the X.500 Directory as originally conceived". I love it!

You'd be hard pressed to go wrong with this book.

In researching business requirements for enterprise web services, it soon became obvious that XML security would be an important issue.

I happened across this book, with a seemingly simple format and am impressed with the information it provides, the progression of information, and how well I was able to understand and comprehend the concepts detailed.

After reading serveral books on XML in general, I would recommend this book to anyone just wanting to learn XML concepts.

I wish more technical books gave me the same feeling of usefulness that this one gave me.

As they say in the movie industry... "An enthusiastic thumbs up"

Collaboratively written by Donald Eastlake (Co-chair of the joint IETF/W3C XML Digital Signature working group) and freelance technical writer Kitty Niles, Secure XML: The New Syntax for Signatures and Encryption is a solid, accessible, step-by-step guide to the processes for encrypting and ensuring security of XML applications. Individual chapters competently address canonicalization and authentication, encryption, cryptographic and non-cryptographic algorithms, and much, much more. Highly recommended for advanced XML users, Secure XML is a comprehensive, technically proficient, and detailed instructional resource and reference filled from cover to cover with extensive discussion and practical examples.

When you read the XML specification, you will notice that it contains no notion of security. Critical security functionalities such as encryption, digital signatures, and authentication are simply not part of the XML standard. XML is similar to many other protocols, languages, and operating systems in that it was originally developed without any thought to security and privacy. It is only after serious security vulnerabilities are discovered and publicized that they are patched. But this find, patch, fix mentality of information security is dangerous in that security problems can exist for months or years before they are found.

Similarly within XML, much of the security functionality has been added post- facto, namely in Canonical XML, XML Signature, and XML Encryption Syntax and Processing. By adding security to the core feature set of XML, the W3C has ensured that,
to a degree, the find, patch, fix method won't be the manner in which XML security is developed. A good reference book can help you navigate this XML security landscape.

Topics such as authentication, encryption, XML signatures, algorithms, and keying are discussed. For the most part, the bulk of XML security is covered.

Donald Eastlake, the lead author of Secure XML: The New Syntax for Signatures and Encryption, is the co-chairman of the joint IETF/W3C XML Digital Signature working group, a member of the W3C Encryption and W3C XML Key Management System working groups, and co-author of the XML Digital Signature, XML Encryption, and XML Exclusive Canonicalization standards. It is clear that Eastlake lives and breathes XML. As Eastlake is a writer of numerous W3C XML standards, and standards are often written in a terse and abstract manner; his book has a slightly stiffer writing style than XML Security. If you can get over this style, you can appreciate the comprehensive and uthoritative look at XML the book provides from one of the key architects of the syntax.

Secure XML covers and details every XML security feature. Also, it spends a lot of time giving examples of syntax and language use. This is especially so in chapter 9, XML Canonicalization - The Key to Robustness. Canonicalization is the extraction of the standard form of some data and the discarding of insignificant aspects of the data's surface representations. The book notes that getting the right canonicalization is one of the most important, yet difficult aspects of digital authentication within XML. Chapter 10 goes into great detail about XML signatures and authentication. The chapter gives numerous code examples of various contexts, schemas, and elements that readers can use on their own XML servers. Chapter 10 also has numerous notes and historical information about XML security with information that can't be found elsewhere.

XML and cryptography?

Suppose you have XML data that you want to regularly
send to Bob, across the Internet. But it is of a
confidential nature, so you don't want to send it as
plaintext. Well, you can try using low level
encryptions, like SSL or TLS. But these don't give any
authentication, ie. Bob can't tell that you actually
sent them. Also, once Bob gets the messages, they are
all in plaintext, so he can't easily protect these
against others, if he is on a multiuser computer.

One answer is to incorporate encryption into XML, by
defining cryptographic standards that sit atop XML,
and generate XML documents with encrypted data. These
let you and Bob use powerful XML-based routines like
XPath, XLink and XPointer. Plus, you can now do things
like append your digital signature to your plaintext
file, encrypt the combination with Bob's public key,
and get a resultant XML document that you can send
Bob. Upon receipt, he can decrypt it and verify that
you are the author, all the while dealing with XML
documents.

This book explains the emerging XML standards that
make this possible. They discuss at a high level the
various cryptographic algorithms, like AES [Advanced
Encryption Standard], Diffie-Hellman and MD5. Little
mathematics is needed, as they leave the mechanics of
the algorithms to other books. Instead, they describe
the XML infrastructure that uses these.

The book has a necessarily comprehensive description
of canonicalisation; which refers to the rewriting of
an XML document in a standard form, prior to
encryption. Otherwise two semantically identical
documents would give different ciphertexts, which is
confusing.

If you have been wondering if you should encrypt your
XML documents, and how to do so, this book may clarify
many issues.

I am managing a new project that has SNMP as a feature requirement. I needed to get a good working familiarity with the technology fast. After reading two other popular books on the subject I found the SNMP MIB Handbook by Larry Walsh a much easier read and much more informative. Concepts are presented in a logical order that makes sense the first time through. Practical issues and common problems are discussed in detail and help avoid the numerous pitfalls a first time MIB developer would run into. It has become my primary reference book for the subject.

I have worked with an SNMP network management system for several years and have always struggled with the terminology in general and the construction of MIBs specifically. After only a few minutes of reading the book I realized that this book would explain a lot of areas that I had had problems with. It really peaked my interest and I found that I couldn't put it down.

I purchased this book to use as an intro text for the development of my first SNMP agent. The first 3 chapters provided the solid base of general SNMP understanding I needed to understand the role an agent plays in the overall protocol, and provided essential insight into the industry conventions, and the difference between the different SNMP versions. I also like the book's organization. Whenever a new term or concept was introduced, it was explained nearby, so I didn't find myself having to flip back and forth through the book to figure out what was going on.

It turns out that developing a good MIB is hard, so the real gold of the book is the latter part of the book, which details everything you need to know about MIBs, from traps to complex tables, and discusses many common mistakes made during MIB development.

I can use "the google", so before I bought this book I browsed around the internet thinking I could pick up what I would need from faqs and specs. It turned out that it's difficult to find good complete SNMP information floating around out there. I could find bits and pieces, but critical nagging details were always missing.

A Valuable Reference for MIB Developers and Users

If you are a MIB network manager, developer or user, you need this book. It will help network managers to identify bad MIB's, developers to write correct MIB's, and users to repair MIB's. Novice or expert, there's something in this book for you.

There are many illustrations, screen shots, and examples of actual MIB's. This is one of the easiest SNMP books to read and understand because of its excellent organization. The author starts with basic concepts and builds from there. And, because this book provides such a clear and concise guide to MIB's, it is an excellent companion to "Essential SNMP" by Mauro and Schmidt.

A well written, logically organized text targeted at developers and end-users.

The author lays a strong foundation with the SNMP tutorial followed by a meticulous, step-by-step description of how to construct high quality MIBs. He has managed to balance the need to cover advanced concepts without glossing over the basic concepts. The text works as both an instructional manual and a reference.

I strongly recommend that you purchase this text. Personally, I keep it within arm's reach.
