Great read for children, including infants!Review Date: 2006-10-15
It is very easy to read and follow. The theme is general Paganism, mentioning the 8 Sabbats, God/ Goddess, karma, and things most Pagans do such as ritual.
My son is 9 months old and he loves looking at the pictures and is fully engaged when I read it! So I would suggest perhaps the recommended ages could be from infant up until about 7 or so. It's definitely worth adding to your library!

Why Anarchism?Review Date: 2007-04-23
Very clearly written; interesting critical philosophyReview Date: 2006-11-06
The book is somewhat weaker in its attempt at outlining a thorough-going positive theory of society organized under workers' councils, absent a legal framework for dispute resolution and protection of rights. Instead of a positive theory of law, Berkman interposes a, frankly, underdeveloped and, at times, naive theory that sees all disputes in a modern industrial society as the product of the distortions of human nature that naturally result in capitalist systems.
Berkman seems to believe that no similar disputes would exist in a society that is more humanely and rationally organized. However, he fails to outline what new problems might arise in an council-socialist system, and how those problems might be handled in this radically different type of society. Although such a theory may exist, Berkman fails to provide it. He also fails to provide convincing reasons why those rights we intuitively understand as "basic human rights," would be upheld in the face of, and in opposition to, the interest of the workers' councils. I was left with reservations, also, regarding the efficiency of the type of council socialism that Berkman supports.
This is, however, an excellent introduction to libertarian socialism. The questions it raises are ones that we would all do well to wrangle with, whether or not we subscribe to the underlying theory. What is more, any purely capitalist theory, it seems to me, must acknowledge, and ultimately answer, Berkman's timeles criticique.

Best dog training bookReview Date: 2008-08-21
Basic obedience, positive training theory, problem solving (jumping, digging etc.), off leash obedience and basic obedience are all covered in this book.
I train service dogs and for basic obedience and leash training I use the methods and theories in this book. I can't say enough good things about it. :)
Very good learning theory info, but a little lacking in practical.Review Date: 2008-05-16

After searching and reading reviews here on amazon I ordered a few books. It happened to be during the holidays so I still don't have them (that's another story). However, in the mean time, I found a used copy of this book at a local used book store. I have to say I am very pleased with it.
If you read the reviews of the popular basic dog training books here on Amazon you can be really confused about what to do. Does pack theory work? Is there a dominance hierarchy? Are choke chains cruel? Can positive reinforcement alone work? What should I be expecting of my dog? Lots of questions and recommendations that seem at odds with one another.
The author of this book cuts through a lot of that and really makes a lot of sense. Further, he gives practical, step by step advice on how to handle problems and do very basic dog training. Actual things you can use to make a difference to your dog. After reading about half of his book I was immediately able to make use of his recommendations and techniques and my dog responded. Obviously there is no magic, it will take work on my part, but I could see improvement right away.
Further he lays out some things that seem pretty basic in hind site, but I as a new dog owner didn't realize. Important things, like don't let your dog play with cloth toys and then expect your dog not to think every cloth thing (like a sock) is a toy.
He talks about different collars to use during training, on leash v. off leash training, good and bad toys, good and bad trainers. He spends a good deal of time teaching you how your dog learns and how any training is making use of those basic concepts. He also makes sure you understand that if you own a dog, all your interaction with it is "dog training" and that you may very well be teaching the dog things you had no idea you were teaching him good and bad (usually bad).
His focus is always on praise and reward, but understands that actual correction is appropriate as well when done properly, however none of the specific instructions he offers that I have read so far ever include any kind of physical correction, it is always things like withdrawing attention, stern commands, a cross look.
He offers practical steps for what he calls foundation training, come, sit, stay, which to a new dog owner like myself is really important.
Anyway, after only reading half the book and only using its advice for about 3 days I have to say I am 100% happy with this book.

A great book on how to love and keepReview Date: 2006-03-18
Leona Hamel, also known as LouLou L'Amour, has more than 20 years experience in business and dealing with matters of the heart. She created Romance Unlimited, a division of LDL Enterprises Inc. and titles herself as Romance Agent. Leona's book, "The ABC's of Tease and Please" is a lighthearted book meant to be shared with the person you love. Leona is passionate about human connection and her greatest desire is to have men and women discover the most remarkable relationship they can have with one another. She is a hopeless romantic and is reunited with her childhood sweetheart, Sylvain. How romantic!
"The ABC's of Tease and Please" is a romance handbook that would make a great gift on Valentine's Day or as an anniversary or wedding gift. A page at the front of the book offers a spot for one to sign the book over to the gift recipient. Leona's book often reads like a recipe booklet, offering a smorgasbord of romantic gestures and getting started off with an appetizer. We are offered a Recipe for Romance and LouLou's Love Loaf. In Leona's words, she says she offers a myriad of romantic gestures to help inspire you with creating your own personal expression of love.
Leona's suggestions can give couples some important relationship tips. We are reminded that any relationship can never have too much romance. "Learn what truly matters and never take each other for granted", says LouLou.
Through the 125 pages of her book, LouLou offers catchy titles for each romance tip and cute drawings of full-page graphics depicting the tip in use. Tease and Please is a book of suggestions to initiate romance, which may be done by either sex, LouLou is quick to point out.
I personally found "The ABC's of Tease and Please" to be a fun read, but some of her suggestions were a little risqué for my taste. Some tips will definitely take advance planning and may be a bit too pricey for most. And some ideas may be just a bit far-fetched also, but this book is meant to be a little fun and daring. However, most of her ideas are very do-able, and most are inexpensive. My favorite tip by LouLou involved baking chocolate chip cookies. She also tells us to always greet our sweetheart with a minimum ten second kiss, longer if needed.
LouLou tells us to celebrate our relationship and show appreciation for one another. Be passionately committed. Make it a priority to connect with your sweetheart each day. Be there for each other and know what is truly important to your mate. Don't take each other for granted and be the best partner you can be. Be assured that a warm and loving embrace, a special "I'm thinking of you!" note, a whispered "I love you" in the ear - may only take a moment to complete but will mean so much in the heart of your partner.

Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes: 5 Essential Health Factors You Can Master to Enjoy a Long and Healthy Life (Marlowe Diabetes Library)
A relentlessly upbeat ode to overcoming adversityReview Date: 2008-04-05
Why I wrote this bookReview Date: 2008-02-08
I have learned a lot through the years about how to manage my diabetes: what to eat, the importance of exercise, carb-counting, checking my blood sugars, but that all felt like work. Lots of work. Today I still do these things of course, but I do them with a profoundly different attitude; rather than seeing them as work I focus on what they give me - energy, strength, good health, the rewards of how brave and powerful I am and pride in meeting the demands of diabetes, face-to-face day after day, joyfully.
I have learned to be patient, kind and forgiving with myself and manage my diabetes from a place of love, courage, kindness and appreciation for all my blessings. By focusing on these emotions, they grow in your life and you end up infusing your day with greater happiness. When the quality of your day changes, your life changes.
I wrote this book for my fellow diabetics and for health care providers, so that they will better understand, coach and counsel patients. Here are some comments from diabetes educators who have read the book, "It was magical to read "The ABCs," it brought tears to my eyes so many times! I will be recommending this book to so many of my patients with diabetes - young, old, parents and fellow professionals." Another, "What a delightful book. I enjoyed all of it and found gems of insight, observation and wisdom for people to consider, savor, and act on. Reading this book is a bit like taking small, regular doses of healing and inspiration." And finally, "At my work I see mostly type 2 patients. When they hear their diagnose I give them education about lifestyle, medication, teach them to control their blood sugar and to inject insulin. We also talk about the emotional side of diabetes, but now that I am reading your book I know it is not as much as it should be. Diabetes is much more than the blood sugars, blood pressures and weight control. My colleagues also want to read your book. I hope we will all use your vision and tools to help our patients."
These words are my gift. I hope you give yourself the gift of better management through your own positive emotions as this book will coach you to do. I wrote this book so that you can live happier and healthier - and create the life you want - not despite diabetes, but because of diabetes. That's my wish for you.
