Great resource for any job-hunter!Review Date: 2003-07-02
This book is cleverly organized and includes humorous anecdotes and cartoons that let the applicant know not only what to do, but also what not to do when applying for a job. The information is up-to-date and, by discussing everything from appropriate dress and the importance of proofreading your
resume to understanding voucher programs and unions, the authors have made certain that no aspect of the job search is overlooked.

A book to laugh and cry aboutReview Date: 2001-04-25
We must keep reminding ourselves of taking responsibility for our lives in order to feel peaceful with ourselves and the life we have created. Stephen Covey's "Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" is a highly popular book with a similar theme. But this book uses the scheme of "ABC's", easier to remember than seven habits. It is written in a down-home common-sense style anyone can understand. It is written from the heart. The author's personal experiences are related in dry humor - the kind that made me laugh out loud to myself and want to read late into the night. In addition to the humor and real-life events, the unfolding of the "ABC" scheme is intriguing.
The book is a product of letters written by the author to his daughter at key times and events, beginning with her graduation from high school. It is not so much "advice" but more "what I learned about life." Perhaps because this is a "true story," the letters were actually received over several years by the daughter, the book is so compelling for me. I cried when I wondered what it was like to receive these letters at unexpected times. I realized that I would like to have received such affirmation from my father. I cried when I realized I could have, but didn't, write such letters to my now-grown children.
I stopped in my tracks when I realized I now have grandchildren who would benefit from such affirmation from me. So I am buying copies as gifts for teenagers and young adults. And a couple extra for my grown-up friends and relatives!

Real Estate From a Real Professional!Review Date: 2008-02-08
He does not suggest that real estate investing is an easy way to make millions by only working 1 hour a week, with one hand tied behind your back - as so many real estate "gurus" suggest. It aint a gripping, emotional appeal to lead millions to become real estate investors like an alter call at church.
It's a textbook, of sorts. I have successfully incorporated his conservative, methodical approach to my due diligence process for acquiring investments.
Think about it: The marketers who made millions selling 'no money down' and 'weekend millionaire' how-to books are now selling how-to make millions buying foreclosures (From the poor, would-be investors who bought their first books, over-leveraged themselves, and now contribute to the flood of foreclosures on the market! Hmmmmm.).

The body produces at least 200 different hormones. Challem chose the ten most common to describe in detail: melatonin, DHEA, pregnenolone, estrogen, testosterone, insulin, thyroid, adrenocortical, and human growth hormones. Challem gives a brief explanation of how each hormone works, and the symptoms of hormonal imbalance. He then discusses natural alternatives for each.
Challem also includes advice from several medical doctors, who warn people about the dangers of taking hormones indiscriminately. He also condemns the aggressive marketing efforts of the major drug companies. He quotes Dr. Susan Love as saying that "one of the most powerful marketing techniques used to influence both doctors and patients is the manipulation of fears of aging and death." Challem emphasizes that "there's no agreement about the benefits of hormones when used as an antiaging therapy."
Hormone therapy has, of course, saved many lives, as the millions of people taking insulin for diabetes will attest. Challem's message to people is that hormones "are drugs, and they are very powerful drugs." Just because many of them are easily available OTC doesn't mean they are safe. The ABCs of Hormones will provide readers with the basic information they need to decide whether or not they should take supplemental hormones, and if so, how much and in what form.
