Pediatrician Gerald P. Berner presents The ABC's of Becoming Super Parents: Opening the Door to the Best Children and a More Civilized Society, a guide to the parental skills needed in correspondence to a child's stages of growth, from infancy to legal adulthood. Freudian terms are invoked; The ABC's of Becoming Super Parents is grounded strongly in traditional psychology as well as sound parenting advice. "Prior to bedtime, allow no TV or games, no roughhousing with the kids, just a quiet time, perhaps reading or telling a story to them. If the child acts scared to stay alone, Mom or Dad can stay a while, gradually shortening such stays each night. Only on the occasion that the child acts ill or extremely frightened, as after a night terror, should the child sleep with the parent. If out of extreme fear of being alone or for any other reason the child will not sleep at all, then the pediatrician should be consulted." A fundamental building-block guide to raising healthy and well-adjusted children.

This book was for me a real eyeopener. For many years now i'm working in psychogeriatric care as a senior psychologist. As we al know in this field, many residents of nursing homes have problem behavior. They are at a high risk for wandering, depression and agitation. We expect that nursing staff, often low educated, can handle all this kind of behavior. Well they just can't! The reaction is to often the use of medication. The authors of this book, wich is in fact a course, proposed that much of these problems are learned! This is important. On the base of the international literature they build, together with the nursses in the homes an excellent method to handel effective with these problems. Behavior is seen as ACTION. Every Action starts BECAUSE of something in the environment and is continued by CONSEQUENCES: ACTION BECAUSE of CONSEQUENCES!. In the course the nurses learn to communicate with residents, they learn to observe along the line of the ABC's and they learn how to handle the three types of problembehavior wich are most common in nursinghomes. I already mentioned them. The course is very practical, problem oriented and uses many exercises. We have used the method here in Holland. Well it's a big succes. I can only say use it! It's favorable for the residents AND the nursing staff. When they can handle the problems there will be less burn-out among them. For the residents the outcome can mean a lesser use of medication and a much much more human aproach. This is behavior therapy at its best: practical, effective, creative and open minded for all kind of human aproaches wich can enhance the lives of these frail elderly people. USE IT.

Great book - very informative, easy to follow and read and most importantly a great guide from someone who obviously know a lot on the subject and offers practical and clear suggestions on how to deal with bullying

Though this is intended for use in the school setting, it is a wonderful supplement for use at home. Well written and easy to understand, this book is designed for students in middle school but could well be an asset for those in high school.

Excellent Book. This book is a fun, easy to read, inspriational guide that any college bound student should own. It is even fun for a person that would just like inspiration! It is a must have!
BEAUTIFUL BOOK!

This book was written in 1961 so you can imagine the sophistication of the machines and the readers of the time. That coupled with the optimism of the modern thought at the time ("...so will electronic ultimately free him from the drudgery of ordinary mental labor in computation and record keeping....") makes this a hilarious and informative read. Informative because the theory of a digital computer has not changed, only the sophistication, miniturization, efficiency.

I suppose that the first book on hammers might or might not be as funny since the hammer was possibly invented before written language, but the hammer has probably evolved slightly in 5 or 10 thousand years compared to how the power and dominance of computers have increased in the last 44 years. And yes, that's even counting the jack-hammer. The chapters cover switching devices, numbering systems, arithmetic, circuit logic (AND/OR/NOR), memory, magnetic storage, programming and the peripheral devices of the time.

As far as brand names go, IBM, Honeywell, UNIVAC, ENIAC and NCR are mentioned. Languages include COBOL, FORTRAN and SPS. The current reader will note that this book was written before networking was foreseen to be a major aspect of computing, so nothing of it is mentioned. My favorite aspect of the book is the large number of illustrations, mostly circuit symbols and schematics helping to explain how everything works.

My son has so many ABC books, but I couldn't pass this one up when I saw it. He watches all the Red Wings games with dad and therefore is a huge fan. This is a wonderful book for the father and child to be able to read together.

Awesome! My 3 granddaughters go to this book first when it's reading time. It is simple to understand, yet filled with knowledge as the author applies the ABC's to the intrigue of Hawaii.
