Excellent compendium for research or pleasure

This book was an invaluable source of information for my research on tribal sovereignty. Wildenthal focuses on 5 topics: The Cherokee Cases, Indian Treaty Rights, Tribal Criminal Jurisdiction, Tribal Civil Jurisdiction, and Tribal Gambling. Each topic has an introduction section, a historical background section, and a description of the cases and the many issues.

Each topic is also subdivided into its seminal Supreme Court cases such as Lone Wolf v. Hitchcock, Oliphant v. Sququamish, and Worcester v. Georgia. The second part of the book compiles various documents that deal with the majority of these cases; two treaties, one gaming compact, and 13 opinions.

There is also a chronology, a glossary of people, laws, and concepts, and a table of cases and statutes. Throughout the book are sections on "reccommended reading" and an extensive annotated bibliography that provide new ideas and books for further research.

Wildenthal writes in an engaging manner, asking questions and raising issues. The style of the book encourages learning; he gives background, then describes the case, then tells you to read the opinion or relevant document, and then discusses the issues.

This is an awesome book!

An A-Z list of crucial individuals, laws, and ideas

The latest in the "On Trial" series from ABC-CLIO, Native American Sovereignty On Trial examines the history of court litigation and important legal controversies involving Native American treaty rights, especially concerning the historical background and modern-day implications of Native American sovereignty. Painstakingly compiled by Bryan H. Wildenthal (Associate Professor and Director of the Center for Law and Social Justice at the Thomas Jefferson School of Law, San Diego, California), Native American Sovereignty On Trial presents primary source documents such as court decisions and rulings, as well as an A-Z list of crucial individuals, laws, and ideas, a chronology. All this and more fill the pages of this informed and informative casebook which is especially commended for inclusion with Native American Studies reading lists and American Jurisprudence Studies reference collections.

This first book by Brian H. Wildenthal instantly positions him as a law-thinker who has disturbing new perspectives to offer about how law drives American history. The subject of how callously and exploitively U.S. law -- and often the Supreme Court as well -- has treated our native American peoples is a long-neglected one. So is the subject of how vastly different from that of blacks and other racial groups is the legal treatment of our U.S. tribes, because they started off dealing with the U.S. government as sovereign nations. U.S. law has often had the effect of attempted genocide on the tribes, not only in the past but right up to today, whether it's the festering old treaty issues or the continuing policy of removing Indian children from tribal homes and putting them up for adoption with non-Indian families. Technically a textbook, "Native American Sovereignty on Trial" is highly readable and accessible to the layperson. It gives a vivid picture of the long sad history of issues and court decisions -- from the Cherokee removals and the broken treaties of old, to controversies around criminal jurisdiction and tribal gaming today. As an American of mixed-blood descent, with relatives who are enrolled tribal members, I felt my blood boil as I read this book, and hope "Native American Sovereignty" gets the wide visibility that it deserves. Wildenthal has been teaching at the Thomas Jefferson College of Law in San Diego for years, with a major focus on this subject. I look forward to Wildenthal's next book.

In my opinion, this is a fabulous book for anyone who is starting to teach a pre-schooler the alphabet. The book clearly shows each letter of the alphabet, in both upper case, and lower. Each page has an illustration of playful cats depicting the example word of each letter. These illustrations are fun, beautiful and colorful, which aids in keeping your child's interest from page to page. The desciptive words are not your everyday child's vocabulary, rather they are words which your child will question the meaning of, thereby expanding their vocabulary (e.g.) Orange Opera Singer). I highly recommend this book. And I would just like to add that you do not have to be a cat lover to enjoy this delightful learning tool.

I totally agree with statement. I'm also in the same boat. Had the revision in my hand many of times, but never bought it, being it was only 2-3 years. A lot of bands of the 60s and 70s didn't make the book (i.e. Foghat, Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush, Robin Trower, and Spooky Tooth which was previously stated). My book looks like its been run over by a freight train, and I need a new one. Let's get the book revised soon please!

This is with out a doubt THE greatest rock & roll encylopedia ever written. My copy is from 1989 and I once saw an up-dated version from 91-92 (unfortunately didn't buy it). Have been on the lookout for a newer version ever since so I was highly depressed to see that Amazon.com has it listed as out of print. All rock fans should bombard the authors/printers with requests to publish an updated version.

The concept of this book--the acrostic--is clever. But it's the beautiful illustrations and the effortless, hiaku-like writing that make this book so appealing. It's a wonderful picture book that truly evokes the spirit of spring.

These books are entertaining for both adults and kids. We are both wondering what spring item will be represented in the next letter of the alphabet, and how the author will describe that word with the limited parameters. For example, A is:
After days of
Pouring
Rain, the last
Ice and snow finally
Leave the earth.
(See the word April reading down the first lines of the description?)
The illustrations are also very colorful and add a lot to the text.

A must for Spring

I love this book. I laughed out loud and found myself reading this to my mate and we are in our 50's. I have a new item to give as a baby gift each time I need to buy a gift. The stories as well as the illustrations are just the greatest.
This will surely be the favorite book of many a young child for years to come. Even those children in their 50's.
Thanks Glenn for a wonderful book that will teach and entertain our children and grandchildren for years and years. Please keep up the good work. We need more books such as this to encourage reading in our youth.
GOOD JOB!

Glenn's whimsical artwork is delightfully brought to life with his equally imaginative verse in this MUST HAVE children's book. All my sons are young adults now but that hasn't stopped me from coming up with every reason to purchase several copies of this charming children's book. I've already given it as my new signature gift at 2 babyshowers and 1 birthday.

Looking for THE gift to give every child, young and old? Look no further, you've found it here in this colorfully fun children's book!

I stumbled upon this book at a friend's house when her 4 year old was drawing pictures of turtles in tubs and kittens giving kisses, and I asked why in the world is she drawing such funny things!?! Her mother told me she was coming up with her own ABC pairing's, an idea she got from her favorite book "The A to Z Book". I laughed so hard, it was so creative, and rediculous...I loved it! I can see this book becoming a new favorite among children, one that they will remember for their children as adults.

This is a must have for all Toot and Puddle fans. A great ABC book for children learning thier alphabet as well as a all around good book. The books starts as a children's picture book and moves into a ABC book and then returns to a picture book style which gives a little variety to the book. It will keep children's interest and as usual the writing and art work is fabulous!

My Children loved this book! Each Zoo Flake is so clever. My kids couldn't wait to make their own! I had to help my four year old with the folding and cutting, but the older kids did great on their own. They have asked if this could be "a Christmas thing" we do every year.

What a clever book, and not just for kids!

In this enchanting book, the author has created "zoo flakes," or paper snowflakes cut into animal kaleidoscope shapes, for each letter of the alphabet. What time and patience this process must have taken! These are not crude cutouts of rough animal shapes, but highly detailed silhouettes of unicorns, foxes (foxen?), and more. I encourage you to click on the book cover picture above so you can enlarge it and get a glimpse of the animal shapes shown on the cover. Great as an alphabet book for kids or a fun book for adults to look through -- it would be a unique conversation piece on a coffee table. It also includes directions at the end for making zoo flakes.

Since I have become an avid crafter and enjoyed selling some of the items I have made with my own hands, this book has given me a tool by which to expand my craftyness all over the place. I was introduced to this book by a wonderful woman who has been weaving baskets for 20+ years, Melissa. She moved out of our area and left the book behind me to enjoy the pleasures of people raving over works I created. It is a great tool for those who need a place to start. There is just one downfall, no fault of the publisher, not all events in your state are listed. Too bad for them!!! However, you can find out how to register and get involved by the little known publishings your area puts out. On a wider scale, if you are traveling you can plan a trip and make some dough and possibly write the expense off. This is a great book.

This book is great for children. As a father of four, I have read this book over and over to the children ranging in age from 1 to 7 years. They love it. They also love it, because their Mom and Dad are gardner's and spend time outside planting different species of plants, mostly flowering throughout our yard. Our children actively assist, getting dirty with us, but learning, and they can see the results not only of our work, but through the book, learn the names of the many plants, as well as the alphabet for the younger children.

I also personally know the authors, whom I have great admiration and love for. They are great christian leaders and parents, have always been active gardner's and love the outdoors.

I highly recommend this book to young parents.
