The pictures are indeed magnificent, however, I must demur about the accompanying text which does not provide appropriate, tightly written or in some instances, historically accurate information.

This is an incredible reference, especially for uniforms. The pictures and detail are amazing, and you can generally tell what people thought was real, and what people did not from looking at the prices. The attention to detail in the descriptions is really helpful in identifying stuff today. I wish there were more photos, and sometimes I wish there was an acknowledgement of some of the controversey surrounding some of the items. I really am in awe of the folks who put together this beautiful book, and the incredible pictures. I think this is a great starting point for anyone collecting seriously.

Incredible Pictoral History of the Artifacts of the Game

Only one word describes the catalog set.....INCREDIBLE. As a life-long baseball fan, collector, dealer, etc, this set of catalogs, pictures in beautiful crystal clear color, many of the artifacts of America's National Pasttime. Many people were upset at Halper for breaking this collection up. Contratry to that opinion, I believe breaking the collection up allowed SO many people to share in the history of the game. Five million dollars worth of collectibles were purchased by MLB for the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Twenty two million dollars worth were auction in the Sotheby's auction and an unknown amount on amazon.sothebys.com. These catalogs contain relics from every facet of the game......baseball cards dating back to the 1880's.....team and individual photos dating back even farther.....uniforms, bats, balls, gloves from nearly every hall of famer......personal trophies like triple crown, Cy Young, MVP and so much more. Nowhere will you find such a book that illustrates why Baseball is woven through the fabric of America than this catalog. The lot descriptions are carefully crafted to be both a history lesson and a thought (and pocketbook) provoking snapshot of baseball. Never again will there be such a collection amassed. No one has the access to players and probably the funds to acquire such a collection....you get a glimpse at everything important about baseball. Everything good about baseball.....you forget about the strike of 1994, you forget about the high paid cry babies of today and remember the guys that played the game for one reason.....the love of the game. There was team loyalty, work ethics, and so much more that baseball and America as a whole is sometimes seriously lacking today. Spend the bucks.....you won't regret it......

Indispensable for the true baseball memorabilia collector

This is the Hall of Fame of baseball memorabilia, without equal. Halper had put together a collection of almost every baseball-related item that could be collected, and these catalogues display most of that collection, including lots of items that you never would have thought even existed. The pictures of the items are terrific, and are worth the price just by themselves. But in addition, this post-auction printing also includes the final bid prices for items in the auction, so it seves as an excellent "price guide" for rare and unusual material - memorabilia you certainly won't find in Beckett's guides or other more generic price references. And, for those of us that think of some of the final bid amounts in terms of hefty mortgages rather than hobby expenses (e.g., $305,000 for a Lou Gehrig jersey!) the book is great fodder for dreams, however unattainable they may be...

I was disappointed with this book due to the fact it needs to be updated from 1997. It only covers Beatles memorabilia, not records or albums. Didn't cover autographs. Only covers pricing for early Beatles items, nothing current or the Beatles as individual artists. If you need a price guide for early items and don't mind the book being outdated by 4 yrs, this is the book for you.

This book is pretty good. It has a lot of really neat picture and tons of good facts and stories. Any wrestling fan should own it. There are several spelling mistakes, however, which make the bok seem like an amateur effort. Overall, still worth reading and owning

I was looking for a book that would be a complete history of wrestling, but there doesn't seem to be one out there. This book has lots of good photos, including memorabilia such as ads & publicity photos, but there's a lot missing here. Only the briefest of bios are provided (I wish it included at least year of birth, height, weight), some major wrestlers are omitted entirely, & there's no index. Unlike a "real" encyclopedia, most of the book is not arranged alphabetically (only the "Slamographies" section is alphabetized), so an index would be useful. I'm mostly a fan of 1950s - 1960s wrestlers, so I wanted to find information on the old stars, but this book misses some of the biggest attractions of that era (like Haystacks Calhoun). A worthy addition to your wrestling reference library, but will somebody please write a definitive encyclopedia on this subject?

If you are a wrestling fan this book is for you!!!

The authors of "Professional Wrestling", Kristian Pope and Ray Whebbe have outdone themselves with this one. If you are a wrestling fan, young or old, long time or new, there is something in this book (actually a whole lot of things), to keep you interested for a long time to come. My favorite chapters were the "Ring Beauties" and "Slamographies", the former because there is not a lot of press about the ladies around and over the years they have had a profound influence on the "sport" both in the ring and behind the scenes. The last chapter "Slamographies" tells you every thing you ever wanted to know about every wrestler that has made some sort of impact on the sport. I am going to test my wrestling fan friends with the info presented here and maybe pick up a few bucks in the process. Great Stuff - Thank you Kris & Ray

The Big Book of Massey Tractors Review

This is basically a worthwhile book and provides an excellent history of the development of Massey Harris.
The background for each branch of the company is detailed and gives insight into the founders' thinking and lives. New insight into the Harry Ferguson connection and Harry himself was especially interesting to me. I would like to have more detail and insight for the later company leaders.
The tractors for the most part are covered adequately, especially the early models. Many of the later models were not covered in much detail. For example the 100 series is sketched only broadly. It is so brief(for the 135) it gives incorrect information and leaves a misleading view of this tractor. The engine options are missed, including the change to the Perkins 3 cylinder gas engine. The photograph for the 135 is a golf course model.
In general the photographs throughout the book are excellent.
As with most tractor books there are errors. In this book the most glaring are related to photo descriptions. Page 194 shows a garden tractor with a belly mower, but the caption refers to a rototiller and sickle mower. Page 199 shows a tractor pulling a wagon but the caption says it is pulling a combine. There several other mislabled photos.
Even with these editing problems this Big Book is worth reading.

I have used this book extensively to search for antique fly rods. A very comprehesive study of the craft. As the author of I Never Liked Those C-130's Anyway I found the history and detail very useful while working on a new book about fly fishing.
Very interesting read. I now have a whole new appreciation for the art of rod making.

While the book generally does an outstanding job of deftly balancing good resarch and an entertaining style, it stumbles badly when west of the Mississippi. What happened to (at the least) Winston, or Powell? Neither one is in the index, and I could not find them in the text. The eastern U.S. bias is quite clear.

This is by far the best book that I have read and read and re-read on fly fishing tackle. The history of early bamboo fly rod makers is extraordinary, very informative and extremely interesting. If you are interested in fly fishing rods and reels, this book is well worth the price. This is a large book with lots of information on rods, reels, collecting, tackle manufacturing, tackle value, etc. etc. the list goes on. You won't be disappointed!

The History of Dragonlance is an all-encompassing follow-up to the immensly popular "Leaves from the Inn of the Last Home" More songs, poems, histories, interviews (with Heroes Tasslehoff Burrfoot and Flint Fireforge), "Serfing the Net" with the Gnomes of Mount Nevermind, and the ever-popular "More Recipe's from Tika's Cookbook", make this an excellent companion book to the Dragonlance Series. As a stand-alone book it has valuable information for the old readers and new readers alike. If you are really into Dragonlance, and would like a excellent book for source marterials, this is THE book for you. Chris Martin

Not what I expected, but it was good nonetheless.

This book includes the Holidays of Krynn, lots of songs, very good recipes (The Kender Wild Rice Delight was rather interesting...), and lots of journals/short stories. It's a must for any DL fan, but is pretty much an expansion of "Leaves from the Inn of the Last Home", which was better than this. However, they are both good.

Review Date: 2006-11-06
When I purchsed this book, I had in mind to use it as a coffee table book, but when I recieved it I had not been able to let it down long enough to let it gather that coffee table dust....It is the most revealing history of duck calls collected over the years of a highly acclaimed call maker, Joe Jaroski, whom I have had the priveledge to meet with during a Callers Show in Tennessee this year. Not to mention calls made from some of the country's best makers...to the calls made by these same people as novices...evaluating a call for its monetary worth is tricky, but this book will help you learn when it comes to purchasing calls, and what to look for when collecting calls. It is a great book to have and to share with friend.

I like to think of this book as a companion to the printed version of the Ken Burns Baseball documentary. While the Burns book may cite a reference, this book will contain the complete text. As a result the level of detail here is greater but less ground is covered. Likewise, there are less photographs here but they are rarier and more striking than most of the Burns photographs. For example I had never seen an "action" photograph of the great Christy Mathewson prior to reading this book (see p. 114). It is one thing to imagine that wicked curve being fired at you via prose, quite another to actually see the fire in his mid stride eyes bearing down on you via photograph.

If I had to choose one, I prefer the Burns book but I think that every baseball fan will want to have both in their collection. What one lacks, the other fills in.

This is an excellent book, not so much that it reveals things you never knew about, but the photographs are excellent and a real trip down memory lane for Reds fans such as myself. The book was so good that when my original was damaged in a move, that I had to replace it with a new copy. Great conversation piece for that coffeetable book you've been looking for or for your sportsroom. Again, a must for all Reds fans.

As a exchange student i lived for 8 months in the states. During those days, i got hooked on baseball and the Reds in particular. When i entered the stadium for the first time as a complete newbie in baseball, i got a feeling which i also get when i go through this baseballbook. The chearing fans, the live organ, peanuts, the beer-boys, the seventh inning stretch, everything comes back in my memory.

When i was back in amsterdam, i was really suprised when i saw a book about the famous Reds here in a discount book store. The publisher is out of stock, but in Amsterdam, a place where nobody is very familiar with baseball, you can find that book about my favorite club.....amazing!
