Best generic text on standards...Review Date: 2000-12-02
This is the best generic text in this area. The actual performance standards that you construct will be different--they will be your own--but this book will give teachers ways to begin implementing your standards. (Other sources include Modern Red Schoolhouse, Nashville TN, which has the most elegant methods available.) This book also addresses the needs of principals, curriculum coordinators, and district supervisors.
All in all, a good beginning...

sweeping and up to date viewReview Date: 2005-05-02
The book also covers recent developments in wireless nets. Including the infrared Bluetooth and the cellphone nets. Where the latter arguably affects as many people as the Internet.
Finally, as he ascends the protocol stack (which is another concept clearly explained), he gets to the Internet. Detailed exposition of DNS, which is one of the core functionalities. Email is also gone into, as this was the first killer app of the Internet. As someone who is involved with antispam technology, I found his description of the email structure and relaying to be concise and spot on. A good level of explanation that covers all the key points.
Naturally, for all of the book's topics, you can find entire books devoted to each. But the encapsulated view of the book is hard to beat.

A very strong book on semantic representationsReview Date: 2000-08-01
Since the early days of AI, many scientists have grappled with the issues of knowledge representation. This book and its predecessors cover a conference on exactly that issue. Unlike some other treatments which I find to be either too theoretical or too pragmatic, this one covers just the right level of abstraction and practicality.
I references this and similar works in the design of the semantics annotation systems at Microsoft that will be seen in upcoming products.

I found a set of his collected writings in the library of my alma mater, but I was hoping to have a little more ability to sit with these great texts, as well as make the occasional note and use as references whenever I needed. So, I was a little discouraged in my burgeoning Williams interest.
Then I noticed the collected works were being re-released. Very wonderful.
These are not newly edited texts. These are the facsimiles of a much older collection, which is obvious in the retention of old printer habits, which is most noticable, for this modern eye, in the absence of most 's' characters replaced by the 'f' looking character, a curious addition given the mid-1800s original publication. A little awkward to read at first, but it does give a historical feel to these newly bound, glossy covered texts.
Volume 1 of The Complete Writings of Roger Williams contains a biographical introduction of Roger Williams by Reuben Aldridge (pp 1-60); Key Into the Language of America (pp 61-28); Letter of Mr. John Cotton (pp 285-312); Mr. Cotton's Letter Examined and Answered (pp 313-396)
I would hope there is before too long a newly edited version of these great letters and writings, but for now, these are the volumes to get and enjoy.
