A fantistic guide to IP routing. It is a good read on a very tough topic. The authors made these topics understandable and interesting. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to know more about OSPF, BGP - and internet routing in general.

The toughest challenge today is finding all study materials comprehensively explained in one place ..I was looking for a book that i could use for enhancing my CCIE LAB preparation....THIS IS IT ... Each and every protocol for IP routing very clearly explained ....the authors have done a great job in precisely placing the examples ...I love the section on IS-IS , OSPF and BGP specifically. Worth every penny ..I'd highly recommend this for anyone preparing for the lab.

Handy and practical

This is one of those books you can classify as 'no nonsense'. I was browsing the bookstore to look up an IS-IS problem and just happened to pick up this book and to my astonishment it had 45 pages of IS-IS config and troubleshooting, diagrams, IOS output and what not. I just had to get my hands on this book.

The book starts from the basics of IP routing with cisco IOS in mind, even tell you about 'routed' vs 'routing' protocols! The protocol coverage starts from RIP then moving on to IGRP, EIGRP, OSPF, IS-IS and BGP. It has an entire chapters on Static and default routing, Redistributing routes, DDR. Appendix has a nice brief discussion of access lists, VLANs, NAT and HSSRP.

If you deal with cisco routers, you got to have this book. Specially the beginners can get a lot from the text coz it not only covers the config issues but also the theory behind various routing protocols.

All in all, a pleasant book to own and benefit from. And yes I did find solution to my IS-IS problem in the book.

This should make it easier for you.

In the past year I have reviewed a number of books that cover routing, Cisco, CCNA and TCP/IP. Cisco IP Routing Handbook is the first to bring the topics together and make it easy to understand while at the same time delivering quality information.

In this 500 plus page reference manual you start off with a great breakdown of IP routing and the different types of routing. The author make easy work of how routing functions and what you need in order to make routing occur. Then the book breaks down the RIP protocol very well, however the book should have included RIP2 and what the similarities and differences are and how to use them separately and together.

The section on IGRP and EIRGP is also excellent, taking you from the basic understanding right through troubleshooting. This is the first book I have seen that was able to do this and do it well, although both protocols could have been given separate chapters for more detail.

OSPF is another protocol this book delves deeply into and this is by far the best breakdown of the topic. The configuration section is highly informative and for the most part easy enough to follow without getting lost.

The BGP Protocol section is broken down to explain, in great detail, what is required to make this protocol work both an IBGP and EBGP. The advanced configuration section leaves nothing out and the troubleshooting section give clear, concise explanations of how to make the protocol work and work correctly.

Other section of their book covers topics like static and default routing, redistribution routing and DDR. Each section sheds enormous light on the best methods and ways to make sure your routers are setup and running properly.

Finally the appendicles included cover access list configuration, routing with VLANs, which could have been given a section in the book if the information was expanded. About the only drawback, and a very small one, is there was no real coverage of TCP/IP and subnetting, which if included would add more value to the book.

Overall this book can be used as a handy reference manual and a study guide for Cisco tests. The price is small in comparison to what you get.

Suitable For the Almost Beginner up to Intermediate

After the dot.com bubble burst, a lot of us had serious concerns about Cisco as a company. There was so much used equipment (much of which hadn't even been taken out of the box) that new sales had to fall. But time marches on and Cisco has clearly survived and even thrived. But there have been some changes. New products and even new product directions have come about. Still, however more than half the revenue of the company comes out of ethernet switches.

This book focuses on the concepts, architecture, configuration, and troubleshooting of Cisco Ethernet switches. It is designed to fit the needs of the networking professional from the almost beginner through intermediate level. The book begins, just as it should, with a discussion of the Open System Interconnection (OSI) reference model. From here it goes on for a truly excellent first thirty pages, the thirty pages that most computer books seem to leave out. It goes on to giving some description of the older technologies (that many of use still have to maintain) and finally to the newest, latest and greatest.

This is an in depth coverage that is truly excellent.

I was very impressed with this book. I didn't know what to expect, as the book has only been available for a short time now. However, I was able to read the entire book over the weekend, and found the book to cover all the major LAN Switching topic areas (and with more in-depth coverage than I was expecting).
This is an outstanding intermediate level book which provides thorough topic coverage while also being written in an easy to read format.
As a fellow CCIE and author, it is refreshing to find good, quality reference material being developed in the industry. This book is defintely a keeper :) :) :)

Cisco LAN Switching Fundamentals review

Review Date: 2005-07-11
Cisco LAN Switching Fundamentals is a well-written, easy-to-understand book, even for people whose first language is not English. The book explains the bases of 4 of the most common families of Cisco Switches: 5000/5500, 4000/4500, 6000/6500 and 3750. It goes quite in depth into showing the differences between these families, and showing where they fit best.

Written by two CCIE, David Barnes and Basir Sakandar, this book shows all their expertise in the area managing to clearly explain layer-2 and layer-3 usage. Through several chapters, the authors try to convince the readers to use a different, more modern, approach to networks, like using layer-3 switches at the distribution layer instead of simple routers.

Some drawbacks I found reading include some confusion in the QoS chapter and the need to give more depth to the Multicast chapter. After reading them I got the feeling that I did not manage to get a good understanding of these two areas. Another small issue is about chapter one where the ISO/OSI stack is explained, since this is a so often repeated item in all networking books I would have given less explanations about the basics of it and focused more on layer 2 and 3 related arguments.

On the contrary I found the remaining of the book to be satisfactory. A detailed explanation of the switches families functions, their features and commands has been given in chapter 3. Chapter 5 focuses on the differences between Hybrid versus Native software versions, giving also a useful chart to compare commands between the two modes. I would rate with a 5/5 score the chapter about Multilayer switching, which is very clear and gives more than a basic knowledge about this argument. Appendix A is a useful hands-on description on how to migrate a 6500 switch from native to hybrid and vice-versa modes.

The last two chapters about design and troubleshooting are a good start for those technicians that need to work on switches and do not need too much theory to get their job done. In particular the troubleshooting one shows several modes on how to track the problems both locally and remotely.

Overall this CiscoPress book shows the usual quality of this Editor's products even if I would not put it as outstanding. It is a good reading to get a grasp on the switching architecture, but needs to be completed in some areas with other more specific volumes.

This book is only 375 pages and one can read it during a weekend. But do not underestimate it because of its size as it is filled with information and tips which you wont find anywhere else. Do you know what scp is? Do you know what IGMP fallback is? Do you know how to find out for an IP pair, which link in the etherchannel bundle getting used? The book is filled with these kinds of tips throughout. Its your source of quick lookups at work when you are stressed looking for something. It can help you to recall what certain knob is used for? The book covers all major areas of Lan Switching. It has a detailed chapter on Cisco switches architecture and it is indeed very informative. Chapter 11 goes into Campus design details and some common pitfalls are discussed.

Overall the book has a great flow. It covers LAN switching concepts, architecture, design and troubleshooting. Youll learn about a varietyof topics, including QoS, IGMP, Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP), Multiple Spanning Tree (MST), private virtual LANs (VLANs), and configuration using the native and hybrid software. The book will help new and intermediate professionals and also aspiring CCIEs. This book along with CCNP Practical Studies from Justin Menga can provide everything one needs to know about Lan Switching has to offer these days.

Great effort by Basir and David!

The book to begin learning Metro Optical networking.

Review Date: 2004-02-09
"Cisco Self-Study: Building Cisco Metro Optical Networks (METRO)" by Dave Warren and Dennis Hartmann, ISBN: 1587050706, is an excellent Metro Optical book. This book covers all of the pertinent information on the topic of Metro Optical Networks. I felt this book was well organized to help the reader understand foundational concepts of Metro Area Optical Networking as well as grasping the application of the different technologies. Each section has a solid foundation, followed by detailed implementation examples.

The first three chapters offer excellent information on the core information regarding the applications that a Metro Area Network supports. Chapters 8-12 cover the various technologies used in the Metro space. The review questions after each chapter really help to re-enforce the content of the chapter.

The chapter on SONET is an outstanding overview of the topic, with just enough detail to be a good desktop reference. The authors did a good job of keeping subjects like framing overhead informational, without becoming boring. It does a good job explaining the section, line, and path layers without putting you to sleep. The differences between 1+1 and 1:1 protection are explained quite clearly, and this carries over to helping the reader in understanding UPSR and BLSR. Every major SONET topic is arranged to build the topics from the line up in a clear and concise way. This chapter is an invaluable resource.

This book covers basic setup and configuration on the Cisco ONS 15454 and 15327 devices, as well as hardware installation for the equipment. There are screenshots of the Cisco Transport Controller application used to manage these devices. However, the pictures are somewhat grainy and hard to understand. As the content may change with each new release, these may become outdated quickly. As with all devices, you will want to get the updated manuals off of Cisco's website. Chapter 5 does have an excellent section on SONET timing. This area is often misunderstood, and the authors do a good job of explaining the subject.

One area this book is light on is its coverage of Metro Ethernet and DWDM. Both topics were treated to very little substance. Most information was Cisco specific and not applicable to other platforms. It would be nice to see more vendor neutral information on the use of these technologies. "Metro Ethernet" by Sam Halabi, ISBN: 158705096X will serve the reader better in understanding Metro Ethernet.

The book covered Packet over SONET (POS) and Dynamic Packet Transport (DPT) in enough detail. Both sections have a good informational basis built before exploring the configuration details. Again, these examples are Cisco specific, but contain plenty enough information to get the reader started in working with these technologies. Anyone looking to implement them will find these chapters a good place to start in the book.

Overall, this book is well organized and is easy to read. If you need to get up to speed quickly in the Metro Optical arena, this is the book for you.

A good investment

The book "Cisco Self-Study: Building Cisco Metro Optical Networks (METRO)" by Dave Warren and Dennis Hartmann is worth every penny of the price tag. A recent job change requires me to grasp an in-depth understanding of optical networking fast. I was looking for a book with a good overview of SONET and practical knowledge on the Cisco ONS boxes. In reading this book, I got much more than what I bargained for.

The chapter on SONET alone was worth the bucks. It does a good job explaining the section, line, and path layers without giving you a headache. The breakdown on framing overheads gives you a good start when you need to troubleshoot an issue. The difference between 1+1 and 1:1 protection were often misunderstood, after reading the section the difference should be really clear. Which also helps in understanding UPSR and BLSR. The different types of alarms and the line of alarm indication signal (AIS) is now my desktop reference whenever there is a problem. In fact, I used it the other day to quickly identify an issue and took action accordingly.

The overview and configuration of the ONS 15454 and 15327 product chapters provide a good start when you need to work with those products. I do find the need to read the manuals on Cisco's web site when I was actually trying to implement them on the field. Every network is different and the optical product line is pretty extensive, no one book can cover it all. The screen shots were based on an older version of CTC, but the general layout is the same and you can still get a good feeling of the configuration steps.

I do wish the book covers more ground on Metro Ethernet and DWDM. The chapters briefly explain the concepts behind the two technologies and basic configurations. I think both parts can be dug into a little further without making the head spin. The same can be said about Packet over SONET. Depending on your own experience, the section on configuring PoS interfaces can be a complete waste or very useful. If you have a solid background in Cisco gears and a good understanding on SONET after reading chapter 3 of this book, you can probably configure PoS interfaces using the question mark in Cisco IOS. But there is nothing wrong with reinforce those commands by reading them again. Especially if you are an enterprise network support and only deals with configuring WAN interfaces once in a while.

The book does a good job explaining dynamic packet transport. Even after working with SRP for over 2 years, I still learned a few new things from the chapters on DPT. I wish this book was available a few years ago when I was first introduced to SRP, it could have saved me a lot of headache and a few trips to a remote hub site. If your company is thinking about implementing DPT or SRP, I would jump right to the chapter on DPT after reading their SONET chapter. DPT is a cool technology that addresses some of the deficiencies of a SONET ring topology and the book does a good job explaining the inner workings of DPT.

The book is really an excellent investment if you want to learn more about optical networking. As with any Ciscopress books, you get a Cisco-view on the technology. If you are thinking about pursuing the Cisco certification in optical networking, this book is a must have. As with any book that try to cover a wide-range of topics, it leaves out a thing or a two. But you can always start with the book and choose the topic you want to explore more on the Cisco web site. It is both a good learning tool and a desktop reference. In my opinion, it is the best sixty bucks I have spent on learning optical networking.

Metro Optical Networks Unveiled

Review Date: 2003-11-07
I recently read the book titled "Cisco Self-Study: Building Cisco Metro Optical Networks (METRO)" by Dave Warren and Dennis Hartmann. ISBN: 1587050706. This book has some pretty good information on the topic of Metro Optical Networks. The key word in this title is 'optical'. I think this book is very well organized to help the reader understand foundational concepts of Metro Area Optical Networking as well as grasping the application of the different technologies. The book accomplishes this by first laying down the foundation of a given topic then presenting a practical application of the technology. The application of the technology is geared more for Cisco Equipment, but nonetheless gives the reader a whole view on the topic.

The first three chapters offer superb information on the foundational information regarding the applications that Metro Area Network supports. Being an enterprise type person I was able to grasp the concepts of Metro Optical rather easily. There are review questions at the end of each chapter that really helps to re-enforce the content of the chapter. It also helps to identify whether a particular concept was understood correctly and in the right context.

This book is best suited for Service Provider design and implementation Engineers, but enterprise engineers will find this book equally intriguing, because of how it unlocks the mysteries of Metro Area Optical Networking. Consultant in the Metro Area Networking space will find this book to be worth its weight in gold. Not many folks take the time to understand the often-complex world of MAN and what Service Providers are offering, beyond the marketing pitch.

One thing that would have been useful in this book would have been a glossary of terms. Although the author has done a good job of explaining terms throughout the book, a glossary of terms would have been a handy place to reference in the future. One can still utilize the index and locate a term or topic rather quickly.

Because the title is written to educate the reader on Optical networks, it has an outstanding section covering SONET. Yes, there are other books on the market that cover SONET with more detail and a little fluff, however I'm not one to dedicate my life to the pursuit of learning every detail about SONET, that I will probably never need. After all I'm not in R & D. This title documents SONET really well. Giving good illustrations and is not so lengthy that you have to block out a Saturday just to get through a concept. The authors did a good job of consolidating the information. So the topic in not overwhelming, but gives the reader a solid understanding of the technology.

The title covers basic information about the Cisco ONS 15454 and the Cisco ONS 15327 as well as initial configuration of the equipment. There are figures in the book that are snapshots of the application used to configure the equipment. While this could be very useful, in my opinion, it's a little risky because if the interface should ever change, then the book is now dated. On second thought, what isn't dated these days?

A section I found rather valuable is a section on configuring SONET timing. Network timing in general is often misunderstood at many levels. The authors did a good job of documenting the challenges of network timing.

This title has a fairly short chapter on Metro Ethernet. If you're interested in Metro Ethernet I would recommend the title "Metro Ethernet" by Sam Halabi, ISBN: 158705096X
This book seems like a good place to start when setting out to understand Metro Area Optical Networks, but with the combination of adding implementation detail, it's just enough information to help grasp the concept of the technology. It doesn't seem to be a book that one would go to for actual implementation/configuration details, but rather a place to understand the technology and to get a basic understanding of how a given technology is implemented.

Like Lazarus, two weeks ago, I had no undertsanding of Cisco System 5.5.5. It seemed over-complex to me, and I knew my job was riding on finding the gem of a nugget at the center of Cisco. With mounting debt and money problems, and a looming presentation that would decide my career future, my marriage future, and my procreation future, I had two options: A) prostitution, or B) Dave Warren. I chose Dave. I just hope you'll be as smart as I was... It was the best sixty bucks I ever spent. And now my wife will give it to me any place, any time!

I could go on forever about the beauty and complexities of Blake's poetry, but nothing I could say could communicate the experience of reading Blake, so my advice would be to read through this collection yourself and then read Northrop Frye's analysis of Blake's work. I have yet to do so myself, but I hope to do so eventually. Blake's poetry is not something to be understood by the rational faculties and just needs to be absorbed in all it's beauty by reading and rereading it.

I like this anthology better than any others I have come across (belive me I've seen many) because it arranges all of the poems in chronological order rather than trying to organize them for you. This way you can read them in the order they were developed or choose any other way to read them and still be able to find them by the date. This edition is also more complete and does not contain sections of poems like 'Jerusalem' or 'The Four Zoas', but the works in their entirety. The letters at the end are also an unexpected delight to read.

While Sir Geoffrey Keynes (brother of "that other Keynes") did a much-lauded service with this edition, wary readers should note that the punctuation is deliberately "corrected" by the editor. The Erdman and Ostriker editions at least attempt to give you what Blake wrote. Insofar as, in the illuminated works, the punctuation was Blake's own and not that of a drunken compositor, that seems an important consideration.

(I went with the Erdman; the Penguin's notes are better in many ways, glosses rather than commentary, but Penguin books are so damn shoddy these days, & the Erdman is published as a book that'll bear some reading without falling apart. Look at the old 2dhand Penguins in used-book shops; few of today's Penguins will survive so long, I fear.)

William Blake is one of the most underrated writers of all time. He is also a wonderful visual artist. Unlike his contemporaries, such as Milton, he created his own Mythology. A complex heirarchy of preternatural beings. Many people have spent years trying to piece together the puzzle of his complex philosophy. Any fan of enlish literature, and desire to be challeged by a writer gifted not only in meter, but also in content will be sad that they had not read Blake sooner. He comes very highly recommended. He affects the way you think. I close with his words: "Forth from the dead dust, rattling bones to bones/ Join; shaking convuls'd, the shiv'ring clay breathes,/ And all naked flesh stands: Fathers and Friends,/ Mothers & Infants, Kings & Warriors."

Mr. Keynes' edition of Blake's complete poetry and prose is the one I've used not only at Shimer College, but also in Russia and China when I taught Blake there. Mr. Keynes arranges Blake's writings chronologically. The reader can thus more clearly see how Blake's mythic system evolves. Clarity matters when a reader falls into a universe as visionary and fluid as William Blake's.

Each poem is a like a magical brick in the mystical structure Blake ultimately builds. His work begins in Innocence, a world where science, imagination, love, and wild beasts blithely dance in balance. When the cruelty, greed, and fears of Experience blight the peaceable kingdoms then society and the human soul split into warring factions.

Blake has been called apocalyptic. In his late great prophetic books families, lovers, societies, and the ecosystem fall to bits. But Los, Blake's heroic artist, "keeps the divine vision in times of trouble." Techno-science and institutionalized greed overshadow the earth, but Los keeps on building Golgonooza, the gorgeous city of art which ultimately connects heaven and earth. This can bring Jerusalem (the feminine divine)back into the heart of Albion (the universal humanity). When the feminine divine suffuses masculine power all things coalesce in a cosmic orgasm of art, science, pleasure, and prayer. "There is no body distinct from the soul!" Mr. Blake proclaimed in his Marriage of Heaven & Hell. "Everything that lives is Holy!" cries Oothoon, whose indestructible purity embraces the love that's "free as the mountain wind." She's become a role model for some exuberant Shimer students.

To truly partake of Blake please treat yourself to at least a few of the full-color illustrated editions that are now wonderfully affordable. The Dover editions are a bargain--but I order the Blake Trust (Princeton University Press) editions for my classes as well as Sir Geoffrey Keynes' lovingly edited Complete Writings. Buy this book! It can bring you bliss!

This book includes an extraordinary consolidation of cutting edge information and innovative authors that are truly on the "bleeding edge of technology"! Each chapter covers different topic areas by individuals practicing these design techniques and tools in the real world today. The chapters cover everything from an overview of the various quality thursts, to tolerance allocation techniques, to maximizing GD&T, to Statistical tolerancing, to developing process capability models for DFSS (Designing for Six Sigma), and much more. This text is surely one of the best ever compiled as a consolidation of the contained related subject matter. This is a priceless body of knowledge in a single book!

I looked long and hard for a book this thorough. A buddy of mine had Crevelings tolerancing book and I thought that was excellent. As I finished my masters degree, I needed a thorough desktop reference that I thought represented best in class. That's exactly what this book is. Since each chapter is written by the major players in these areas, this book is much more than one authors views on the topics. Rather, it is a best in class compilation from some of the sharper folks here in the US doing dimensioning and tolerancing. Paul's chapters themselves are excellent and very thorough. His discussion on how to incorporate the geometric controls into stackup analyses is excellent. Overall, this book should be on every mechanical engineers desktop along with the ASME GD&T standard and Montgomery's books on Quality Control and Design of Experiments. Hats off to Paul and all the other authors for their excellent work!

Russell, provides the scholarly back-story to the film's claims that it is not variations in the functioning of market economics that gives Europeans better health care, more time off from work, and greater social equality, but rather the social policies rendered by their governments. Russell covers historical ground from the enlightenment to the present, institutional influences from church to state, and policy outcomes across the life-course from childhood to retirement. The book is well researched and documented, an easily read eye-opener for students and interested adults, and a handbook for the desk of every pundit and policy maker.

Policy differences with a history

James Russell's recent book, Double Standard, explores the many and considerable differences in public policies that one finds when comparing those of the United Sates with those of European countries. Dr. Russell traces the development of social, economic and political thought that brings each side of this comparison to the place where we find them today thereby placing current policy in its proper historic context.

This concise overview of historic thought would provide an undergraduate student the broad understanding required to grasp the full importance of the policy comparison and, therefore, makes the book an excellent choice as a text for studies in sociology, economics and political science.

Double Standard clearly demonstrates that the policy differences found between the U.S. and Europe did not originate with the divergence of foreign policy relating to the Middle East.

James W. Russell's tools are clear writing, tight argumentation, and impecabble logic. He uses them to calmly and surgically dismantle the myth of American superiority as he explains how and why Americans receive far fewer social welfare benefits than their European counterparts. A real eye-opener.

Double Standard-timely treatment of Europe vs. US policies

This is a timely book that compares social policy in European nations with that in the United States. It offers a concise comparison of a number of specific programs, such as health care, education, family support, and income security, showing how citizens of European nations enjoy social support and benefits far beyond those available to many Americans. Double Standard also discusses contrasting historic and philosophical backgrounds to examine why there is a broad consensus across Europe that government has a responsibility to provide extensive economic and social support for all citizens while in the United States the role of government is challenged and curtailed. Double Standard suggests that European social policies provide a higher standard of living than that now maintained by many in the United States. It presents sharp contrasts between Europe and the United States in such indicators of social well being as rates of poverty and incarceration, educational levels, and income distribution.

The author in the end argues that European social policies are based upon a national sense of inclusion and the common good, that they promote such democratic principles as egalitarianism and active participation in civic life, and that they provide a model that the United States would do well to follow. Double Standard provides important information and arguments that should enter into our continuing debate over the role of government and appropriate levels of services that it should provide in the United States

Another hit by Tim. I enjoyed the previous edition of this book. An exellent read to help stay abreast of the changing standards and challenges in the field. While I had no complaint about content - the font size in the in this edition was challenging because of the small type. Otherwise good and reference.

This book take a complete coverage on the EMC subjetc. All topics are well covered as test, regulations, design and troubleshooting. Even if you are not an EMC test enginer I highly recommend to learn something about this task, because some of the non compliance issues, really are setup and test not well done. The EMC test is not as easy to start a program in the PC and create reports, by the contrary there is a lot of science to know what we really are doing, and few EMC test engineers are prepared to do this.
The book is 100 per 100 profitable, it has the honor to be next to my
prefered ones.

The first half of the book is about all of the government EMC regulations. The second half starts with the basics of how interference happens, then shows ways to eliminate it. Following this are several case studies.

If you can only afford 1 book on EMC make it this one. It covers the general field very well and deserves its' standing as the definitive text on EMC. It does not cover some aspects of design as well as specialist texts but gives enough of a background to get a reader moving in the right direction. If you are new to EMC or want a background to what all the fuss is about, this is the best starting point you can have.

One of the best books for learning conversational Japanese!

This book is probably the single best book I have found for teaching yourself real conversational Japanese along with enough grammar neccessary to understand it and use it! It gets a nine because it could be better only with kana and kanji. If you want to learn Japanese, you will save much time with this book

An excellent method to learn the nitty-gritty/structure.

Of all the courses I have purchased, I keep returning to this one. It is thorough in its pedagogy, and provides enough practice material to really drive the grammar into your head.

I would like to see tapes for this book. It would really enhance its overall coursework.

One of the Best Self-Teachers Available

I concur with the other users of this site in my opinion of this book. You really can learn colloquial Japanese from this book. It is a bit dated - it was, I believe, originally written for American GI's and missionaries who found themselves in Japan after World War II and needed a good self teaching book which could be used on the ground, preferably with a native speaker to go through the material with you or at least to provide pointers on pronunciation. However, this doesn't mean that what you're learning is too basic. Virtually every feature of the spoken language is at least touched on, and best of all, there are a lot of illustrative sentences for every item covered. The whole book is split into only ten lessons, and each lesson seems to last forever, but when you actually start working with the book it is much easier than it initially appears.

There is another book by Martin out that includes copies of the dialogues from this book in written Japanese, if you really feel a need for that. While of course it is a nice idea to be able to work with the writing system immediately when learning a new language, with Japanese I don't really really believe that this is a good idea. All told, Japanese is probably the most difficult language in the world to learn to read and write correctly, more so than Chinese, so I would suggest to the would-be learner that she work with this book for a while and then start on the written language with other learning materials.

Very good content, best for intermediate learner

It can be greatly improved by using Hiragana/Katakana/Kanji in the text. All Romaji is the only weakness of this book.

I love this parallel New Testament. It has 3 of my top 5 translation. I love the NKJV, ESV, HCSB. The last two are excellent the ESV being a revision and correction, and the HCSB being a completely fresh translation. It gives you a nice variety. I would also chosen some different translations to include, but I understand that royalities must be paid and that can get expensive. I wish it would have included the NASB and Amplified and dropped "The Message" and either the NIV or TNIV.

I was very pleased by this parallel New Testament. The text is easy to read, which can be a problem with some parallel or interlinear Bibles, and the binding is very sturdy.

As advertised, the NKJV, NIV, TNIV, ESV, HCSB, NLT, NCV and The Message are included. As with most parallel Bibles, my ideal choice would have had a couple different version (NASB instead of The Message, NLT or NCV), but the addition of the HCSB and ESV were very valuable to me since I do not have copies of these highly thought of translations. I am not a fan of paraphrased translations either, but in a large parallel Bible, it is excusable in my opinion.

Also, unlike some other parallel Bibles I have, the verses line up nicely -meaning, you don't have to turn pages to compare verses.

The book is a little bulky for carrying to church on a daily basis considering many would want to have access to the Old Testament as well.

Another superb addition to my study library.

This is a fine parallel NT. It includes the NKJV, ESV,
NIV, TNIV, NLT, NCV, The Message, and the HCSB. One
can do good comparison study using these translations.
A few are fairly new to the church: the ESV, TNIV and HCSB.
While I would have made other choices about which translations
to include this is a good parallel NT.

What makes this parallel NT so good are the two essays in
the introductory material. The first is by Mark Strauss
on the strenghts of functional and formal equivalent translations. This essay by Strauss is worthy
of study by every pastor and student of the Bible. I wish
Oxford would publish it in a booklet so it could receive the
wide readership it deserves.

The second essay is good too. It is about the different
text types of the Greek NT and serves as a nice introduction
to the subject.

Until Oxford finds a way to publish the essay by Strauss
you'll have to buy this parallel NT.

Excellent book on Wireless LANs

This is a unique book on the topic of wireless LANs as this is a very practical book. Almost all other books on Wireless LANs are mere replica of the IEEE 802.11 standard. This book is different as it gives information about MAC-BaseBand-RF interaction, 802.11a/b/g, MAC protocol, various IEEE 802.11 rules, provides technical illustrations and tells about what features are actually implemented in shipping products. This is the only book that I have seen that describes IEEE 802.11g CTS-to-Self and IEEE 802.11i security.

This book is recommended for anyone who wants to know about nuts of bolts of WLAN technology.

This book covers everything on 802.11 from wireless concepts, protocols, design, security, and best practices, to the very technical details of how 802.11 wireless technology works. Being the first 802.11 wireless book I have read, I couldn't say for sure if it is 100% accurate or not, but appears to be so. A detailed understanding of networking concepts, protocols, methods, and standards is required to get the most from this book, but not required if you don't care about how some of the protocols or frequencies actually operate. There were a lot of technical illustrations that were helpful. The only complaint I have about this book, and any technical book for that matter, is that it will be outdated in a few months with the emergence of new standards.

This is an EXCELLENT book for detailed frame analysis, especially if you need the guts of the new security protocols. I read most every wireless LAN book that hits the market, and have written a few of my own. This book is definitely a winner. Thomas does a great job of bringing out hidden and vague areas of the 802.11 standards, and answered several detailed questions that nobody else has been able to answer. Kudos on a job well done.

I am half way through reading this book and I have to say it is a very good book! It is well organized and structured. The author spent the first few chapters giving you an intro to networking, what wireless technology is all about, how it is used, all the wireless standards, etc etc. It gets very technical when the author starts talking about the wireless MAC and PHY, but that is sort of expected. The author has written two books before and his style of explaining complicated topics in a fairly easy to understand way is highly appreciated...

In general, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about wireless technology.
